Is it hard to find considerate people these days? sm [2008-08-18]
seems like no one is considerate of anyone else anymore. I dropped a few friends because of it. A recent friend is being inconsiderate also, husband wonders why I still do things with her. Well, you know, you can People are late, don The way of the world these days I guess.

Ok, for you people talking about linoleum... [2008-07-11]
Let me make this perfectly clear: Linoleum never has and never will look like wood or tile floor. I donhigh end it is, it still looks like linoleum. It amazes me how people put that garbage in and say even my friends think it is real tile! Let me fill you in on something: They don't think that, they are saying that to make you feel better about buying cheap flooring. LOL I know linoleum has its uses and it's the most affordable flooring, but please stop trying to convince yourself and others that it looks great because it doesn't - it looks like LINOLEUM!

Gah...some people... [2008-07-02]
My ex-SIL used to say all the danged time that she was pregnant, once with twins, then a single, oops...twins again, on and on. Inevitably she'd always end up *miscarrying* for one reason or another! For this situation, however, I wouldn't believe it til I see it...some people just really get on my nerves with their attention-seeking behavior...I think they need therapy. Do please let us know when she stars on Jerry Springer, this sounds right up his alley!

That is just wrong. You are assuming these people were going sm [2008-07-02]
to do the right thing - and what makes you think they would? the dog should have been impounded, they should have contacted the hospital for payment information - did they? No. The victim has to pay or her credit is screwed. Her insurance could refuse to pay - they could investigate the dog bite and see who the culprit was - but they choose to pay - so not fraudulent. The people have not done anything it sounds like and now you are very quick to jump on this mom who obviously made a few mistakes and just wants to know what to do next to correct them. Wow.

I'm not kidding you - this happened several months [2008-07-01]
you sent them the bill for $800, but obviously in that timeframe your insurance has paid it. What will you do with the $800? You are benefiting from it, not your daughter. You answer none of my questions, which leads me to think you If I were these people, I would have offered to pay the hospital directly for the bill. I would also want to make sure that your insurance company was aware that the bill was paid out-of-pocket, so as not to have double payment. What you are suggesting is insurance fraud. Your insurance pays the bill and then you ask someone else to pay the bill. If I were these people, I would be quite upset at your shadiness. Just call it for what it is. It's all about the money.

I can't believe you people sm [2008-07-01]
This was a significant bite, and nothing was done about it.

Why do people get attacked on here? [2008-06-10]
You know I was just reading the below thread from the upset stepmom. I think it is so sad how so many people come to this board when they need support and during their time of need, they just end up getting attacked. Do these attackers ever think about their impact on the person who originally posted the thread? That person could be severely depressed and they are making them feel even worse. I just do not understand why these people who do not agree with the original poster just can The person is looking for support, not insults. Just like we are taught in kindergarten...If you do not have anything nice to say, then do not say anything at all. This is the most unfriendly and abusive discussion board I have even seen. There are much nicer MT boards and I am joining those. I am sick of the attacks on this board. These attacking posters have become mean, hurtful, hardhearted and noncaring. Maybe they are miserable in their own lives and want to trashtalk others on here. I personally think they should get a life.

I wonder how many other people this is happening to? -sm [2008-05-30]
It would be QUITE the major news story if it turned out they were doing this to millions of people across the country. (But I sure wouldn't put it past our government to do it, either!) Maybe that was the plan all along.

I still haven Worse, I just got one of those Return Information Noticesin the mail. Well, guess what? The state of Calif. dida little number-rearranging, (or should I maybe call it fuzzy math?), and my state income tax refund has been changed from over $300 down to ZERO. When you call the number on the website, and finally get a live person to help, they very helpfully refer you to someone who can go over it with you, and then the system tells you it And get THIS: The actually had a LOWER taxable income than I had calculated. So how do they figure I am suddenly owed NO refund? It sure sounds like thathow the gov Like I Looks like once again, this Calif.taxpayer has been Californicated.

some advice about animal abuse [2008-08-20]
turn him in as soon as possible. People like that do not deserve animals. Someone ought kick him once in awhile. Call the Animal Protection Society in your area immediately. whether it is your alcohol or food habits, it but maybe that's just me! I am a firm believer in people keeping their noses out of other people's behavior (unless you are falling down drunk or not paying your bills, and thus affecting her). As for alcohol usage - my DH and I drink every night after work, 1-2 glasses of wine or a beer. I believe normal usage is considered 1-2 servings (12 oz beer, 1 mixed drink, etc) daily. I find it relaxing and it is supposed to be good for cardiovascular health.

Believe it or not we live off those tips. [2008-08-19]
DH gets 2 bucks an hour. He gets none of the surcharge, nothing for gas, nothing for delivery fee you all pay. He gets stiffed, he gets 2 bucks an hour. That is our spending money. Since I am an MT and you know these days what that means, and I watch the kids, he works at the post office and with a church, and the only way to make bills stretch is to live off his tips on pizza. So, we eat mostly the discounted (not free) pizza he gets from work (the left overs people don't pay for or are deadbeats). So next time you tip the pizza guy remember these truths. Our 3 kids depend on the tips, and so does this MT, whose 2 jobs typing goes to bills and growing kids clothes.

Lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18 [2008-08-19]
I didn't know this was going on..... The article is long so I didn't copy all of it. See the link below: College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus. The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age. This is a law that is routinely evaded, said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont who started the organization. It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory.

Need some advice about possible animal abuse sm (this is long) [2008-08-19]
my son rode school bus home with afriend to the friendhouse last friday (i had never been to their house, but his friend has been here once and i these people some like really nice people, very religious. i went to pick up my son friday evening and was a little shocked. had a weird vibe about the dad right off the bat. i dontheir house was ok, but i felt dirty when i left. he has a couple of dogs, one he says he doesn seems very lovable) and another dog that has puppies and he bragged listened to him very well. when i was getting ready to leave, this momma dog comes around to the front and seemed extremely scared, especially when he was by her. he was trying to show me how good his dog listened to him. but she was putting her head down, slouching down like he it made me feel so uncomfortable. i so the next day my son goes back for a b-day party. on the way to their house, my son tells me that the dad kicked the momma dog because she was eating the cat (the cat is really skinny too). when i got to the house i was able to get a better look at this dog because it was daylight and the poor thing looks so unhappy and her rear end area looks like her hair is coming off, i don i just felt so helpless for this dog. i called my vet office and asked them who can i call if i suspect animal abuse (we don i but the look on the dog oh, another thing, when i was leaving there friday evening i said something about keeping the kittens (yes, they have kittens too) away so i don so my question is do i get a hold of the police and tell them this???? i just want the dogs taken away. i want to be anonymous. i don the dad told me that this is the third litter of puppies for this momma dog since last november, and if he finds out who the daddy is ........ well i thought to myself, why don i was furious! i thought about writing a letter to the police station. what do you all think? thanks

Credentialing [2008-08-19]
Has anyone really reeped the benefits of being credentialed? I have been fortunate enough to work on site in psychiatry and never NEEDED to be credentialed. I am looking at getting a raise and thought maybe that would help. However; you have to pay money to be a member with the people who require more money to take their test and buy their books. I am not sure it is worth it. Comments...anyone...

Lower it - 21 is too high [2008-08-19]
1. Three years is not a huge difference. 2. Most kids are drinking earlier than 21 anyway and nobody is enforcing the law when they get caught drinking under age. 3. It was 18 when I was 18 and there was not a high incidence of drunk driving or whatever reason they have for a drinking age. 4. Germany there is no drinking age and they do not have a high rate of drunk drivers (they have one of the lowest rates of any country). 5. If they are not going to lower the drinking age they should then raise the age of joining the military. Someone tell me that it makes sense that they can't drink til their 21, but at 18 years old in the military they are given guns and can use them. Some kids will be responsible and some kids won't. I know a lot of people who are in their 20s and 30s and older who are very irresponsible when it comes to drinking - btw, I am 48 years old, not 18, 19, or 20 (and just want the age lowered) :-)

Keep your hands off your face [2008-08-19]
and be very gentle with the skin around your eyes and face. I see other people rub their eyes and faces vigorously when they're tired, and when the hands come down, I see wrinkles around the eyes. I'm 45 and people think I'm as young as 26. I do have the dark circles, which I have to cover with 16-hour foundation in a shade lighter than my regular foundation. Then I set with powder. I sometimes apply a dab of pink powder to the darkest areas or the inside corner area. This is what the makeup artist from What Not To Wear does to counter darkness. Preparation H is supposed to shrink bags.

I started getting bags under my eyes in my 20's. SM [2008-08-19]
It kept getting worse. People would ask me what's wrong with my eyes. I finally had plastic surgery and it was the best thing I ever did. It was the only thing that worked. This is only to be used as a last resort, but the results were amazing.

that is a lot! [2008-08-19]

Throwing a party - can anyone steer me to a website than will give (sm) [2008-08-19]
how-tos on planning a party for about 40 people? Very, very new at this. It is combining an18-year-old BDay and going-away for 2 daughters who are getting deployed to Iraq again. Planning for outside (have a large tent). Needs tips on best (reasonably priced) food and decorations. Thank You.

Go underground [2008-08-19]
My response may raise a few hackles... please don Based on your observations and what you Automatic concern must be raised for any child in this household as well. If the dog is repeatedly having litters, it is being left outside, unattended or running loose. Someone needs to carefully plan an exit for this dog to safer pastures (during a no puppy time, of course). This may require carefully playing detective, figuringout patterns at the household for dog and humans. Find out if there are any local rescues or rescue groups in your area. Take your problem to them but present it as a hypothetical question.... Guard the details until you know who you are talking to really. Get insight into your local humane society and/or animal control and exactly how they work. In most cases, you can make a complaint anon but a signed complaint may be needed for the authorities to move forward. Without physical signs of abuse and/or neglect (cowering doesn It sounds like there may be some skin issues but, again, this is not always a sign of a bad owner. A strong word of caution: Abusers outted in a public way sometimes take their new found fame out by raging against their victims even more before help can get there. I understand you are sickened by this situation, but acting without carefully thinking things out might do more harm to all involved than good. You really need to talk to local animal people but go carefully and don There are some extremely radical people out there who mean well but have no common sense switch anymore. Finally, bless you for caring and taking this to heart.

Low-carb diet problems - sm [2008-08-18]
Have been on a very low-carb but high protein diet for 3 months now. Havebeen experiencing a bit of shortness of breath and a catch in my throat as well as being more thirsty than usual. I have checked out ketosis and wonder if that is where I am. Has anyone been on a low-carb diet with similar symptoms? p.s. Have lost aproximately 25 pounds Thank you.

you are a sweethart.......I don't use the tip jar- sm [2008-08-18]
and I don't always tip when I pickup, but someone had to prepare the food didn't they, and get it ready, etc. As I said I don't go whole hog when I tip when I pick up, but I do find that we get better service and more of everything we ask for because we do tip on pickup. The people know us and treat us well, granted they could do that with everybody but I would be surprised.

McDonalds charges a $1 dine-in fee if you eat inside. [2008-08-18]
I don't tip those who bus the tables. I don't tip the person taking my order. I don't feel the need to tip those people - they are making an hourly rate for the job they do and it does not require hardly any skill at all.

we generally give $4, my DH usually tips 20% - sm [2008-08-17]

Gas surcharge, that stinks, here the drivers - sm [2008-08-17]
have to pay for their own gas, etc. So whatever tips they get helps pay for their gas, and doubt they make more than $6 an hour here but have to drive long distances (boonies). I don't know what their deliver area is but it is a minimum of 5 miles out from the store, and those short trips eat up the gas. They have about 5 people delivering on the weekends as they are kept busy (only delivery service in the area--Domino's)

I made my own bread for years sm [2008-08-17]
I have celiac disease, so no more, but the kids loved it. I have had a bread machine, but they are not friendly in higher altitudes, so I gave it away. I baked by hand and yes, I was an MT at the time. I used to make 6 to 10 loaves at a time, which is a lot of kneading. I found that kneading it as I did clay when I was throwing on a pottery wheel worked best for my hands. It is a spiral kneading technique, hard to explain. I sit on the floor and knead in a very large steel bowl. The angle of my wrists and hands is much better that way. Anyway, my favorite bread recipes come out of the original Laurel's Kitchen. I don't like the new anniversary edition and I don't like their bread book. You'd need to look in the library for this, but it is worth it. While I don't own one (have not found one) I understand that the best and easiest way to knead bread is a bread bucket. You can buy them from a couple of places on line that cater to Amish people. It looks sorta like an old-fashioned ice cream bucket, but you put bread in the bucket and crank. I stand by something called Hungarian High-Altitude flour. I have used it at high altitude and low altitude, it is equally good. If you can, get bulk yeast from a health food store because those packets are pricey and not as fresh as you need for premium bread. Made by hand, the best bread comes from the best sponge beforehand. Feel free to email me about anything I have said.

A couple ideas. [2008-08-16]
Here's a couple ideas... First, if you have a hobby where you make things that can be fun. Imoney making part. I've made lots of table runners, bags, lap quilts, and other little things here and there for family and freinds. They all say I should go into business but I don't feel I'm that good yet, plus the expense to buy the supplies to make the projects would cut into any profit made. Another way to go which my mom (she got me into quilting) told me about is to purchase a quilting machine. They cost about $6K, but people charge $25/hour to have the quilts quilted (this is for large quilts like queen and king size and anything too big for your sewing machine). One of my freinds did a king size quilt for me and it took her 4 hours. Second idea and this could really pay off is this. If you have a digital camera or scanner there are tons of ideas, most of which I have entertained and am still looking at this (just get caught up MTget into it). Anyway...with the digital camera you can take photos of people possesions for insurance purposes. I read on a website quite awhile ago that some people were looking for someone to take pics of their possesions so they would have a record of them for insurance purposes. Or another idea is if you love to take pics of anything and everything we have been looking at stock photography. If people like the pic and want to buy it you would get royalties. Another idea which I have started doing (not to make money though), but if people have slides or photos they want scanned in for whatever reason. I also have photoshop and have been restoring old worn out photos. I've also been scanning in slides that my DH's grandfather took of my DH and his siblings when they were growing up, and then more slides when they came to Germany to visit us. There are literally over 1000 slides for me to scan. Also they didn't take real good care so am using photoshop to get rid of a lot of spots, lighten/darken, fix colors and the results are fantastic. My husband says I really have a nack for this and has been encouraging me to take some more advanced photoshop classes to look for work using photoshop. I understand they pay quite well depending on the job. It's been a blast seeing my DH's childhood and I'm having a lot of fun organizing the pics. Once they are all scanned in, then I will be creating CD's to give to his siblings (he has 3 siblings), plus his mother. Another idea I was thinking about, which my DH told me I should do is offer services to people to help put their photos and family history into albums for them to pass on to their children. There are lots of grandparents out there who have tons of intersting stories to tell, and am sure lots of wonderful photographs. I thought about putting together some kind of busness where I could record their stories and type it up and somehow match photos with stories. I'm doing that myself. I've been doing genealogy research now for the past 20+ years and am having a blast creating a family history album with stories and photos for myself (even though I don't have any children to pass it on to), but I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who just don't know where to begin. I don't know how much time that would take or what anyone would charge for it, but I think it would be fun. Hope that helps a bit. Sometimes all one needs is a fresh idea (or two). MTing can get tiring. Especially when the hands start cramping up. Everyone keeps saying you have to take frequent breaks, but if I take frequent breaks I don't get my work done and I don't get paid.

Rotel [2008-08-16]
Combination of diced tomatoes and chilli peppers. Some people use it in everything they cook. Frankly, I can live without it.

I usually give $5, or 20% depending on how much I order. [2008-08-16]
I know they work hard for their money, and believe it or not, there are still a lot of people out there that NEVER tip so I try to make a small difference. I know people in my family who have NEVER tipped and do not feel like they have to. I think it's rude consider wait staff usually never makes minimum wage and something like $3.35 plus tips, so, they are very dependent on tips to make a liveable wage.

memories of [2008-08-16]
sitting at grandparents on the back steps (very wide to fit the porch) and eating watermelon, or watching my dad and brothers taking turns cranking the ice cream machine and all making fun of each other for being too weak. It was so quiet you could hear the windmill squeak, very restful. Hearing stories of when Daddy and his three brothers were young and took turns jumping out of the barn hayloft with a parachute made from one of grandma's good white sheets which ripped. Daddy said he hugged that limp sheet all the way to the ground. Uncle Joe said they let him go first because it was his idea, but they all got a whipping for it. At my other grandparents, Mother and her sister talked about skating all over Austin jumping the cracks in the sidewalks. I had to be quiet when John Cameron Swazy was on (Timex keeps on ticking) or Billy Graham. Going to the barbershop (Papa was a barber) for haircuts. sitting on the porch snapping beans or peas. Aunt Nell and Uncle Frank lived in the country, feather tick mattresses and bolsters, chamber pots and outhouses, mean chickens. Aunt Nell's hair was let down at night and hung below her hips. She had a built-in ice box (not fridge) and a water pump in the kitchen and thought she was in high cotton. They lived in the house she had been born in. She had sunbonnets by the back door. Never went out of the house without one and at 86 still had beautiful skin you would not believe. Kept their money in a bible. They had a 17 year old hound under the front porch with no teeth who acted like he would tear you up. They called him didhebitecha. She made the best biscuits in the world until canned came out! Daddy loved woodworking, helping him hold large piece of wood in the shop or handing him tools. I was anxious to learn to cook (I never said I was smart!), made cookies and such at 12, cooking whole dinners by 16. Being the oldest was not all you would think it could be. I was a miniparent. I remember my baby brother being droopy drawers, would step out of his diaper and keep going. Love to remind him of that now when he is 52 and 6. Then came two more sisters, the last when I was 17, Mother had it made for that one! I remember my border collie, Lady. We got her when I was 9 and she was 2. Had her until I was 21. One of those dogs who knew who could come in the yard and knock on the door and who to run entirely out of the neighborhood. She was my best friend. She had trouble delivering her last litter and my grandmother helped her. I remember the attic fan, and wish I had one now. My son does and it saves him AC bills about 2 to 3 months of the year. I remember being around my great-grandparents. In fact, one grandmother was 90 when she died in 2000. I was 54. How many can say that? I also remember seeing a civil war veteran in the 1950's. This feels like such a time warp as the memories go flashing by. I remember when most moms stayed home. The fuller brush man went door to door. There was a man who traveled around sharpening knives and scissors. Milk was delivered to your door. Remember keeping wet clothes in a bread bag in the fridge? You put a tin sprinkler with a piece of cork around the base on a 10 cent coke bottle to sprinkle while you ironed. Do they still make those? and I remember when keyboards had a cent sign on the number 6 key! Just for the groan effect, here's one for you - gas was 18 cents a gallon and there was a gas war between competing stations!

Bleeding dog (sm) [2008-08-16]
We just had the same thing happen to our Beagle 2 months ago. The little nail on his back claw was ripped out by the root when he was jumping down off the kitchen counter. There was blood everywhere! We rushed him to the vet, and the vet cleaned the area with peroxide and wrapped it with gauze and then Kling wrap. He gave our dog a shot of antibiotics and then oral antibiotics for the next 10 days. We had to keep him in an E-collar to prevent him from chewing it and bring him back for dressing changes. After he finished the antibiotics and had a couple of dressing changes, we kept a small sweat sock over his paw to keep the area clean. You can probably clean it and dress it yourself. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. You might want to put some antibiotic ointment over the area before putting the dressing on. Good luck!
