Any advice and/or experience with teeth whitening? [2008-10-11]

Teeth sensitivity [2008-09-17]
My sister used something recommended by her dentist, so I assume it was not damaging. However, this was last winter and it made her teeth so sensitive to cold she had to be sure to keep her mouth closed as she couldn't bear the cold air on her teeth! Just something to be aware of.

Teeth whitening question [2008-09-16]
My daughter got her braces off and now wants to have her teeth whitened. I would have the orthodontist do it but they charge about $400.00. Yikes! Anyone use over-the-counter whiteners? If so, which ones give better results? Thanks

Bath and teeth [2008-06-27]
Maybe it Some of it tastes yucky to a kid or the mint may be too strong orbrushing could be irritating his gums. Let him pick a child As for baths, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to the tub. What mom didnsaid if I told mom she would call the adoption agency and tell them to take me back (I wasnatage 4 I didn Maybe he saw something on TVthat scared him. Some shows are pretty graphic (news too). I recall one show where a lady was brushing her teeth and blood started pouring from the faucet. Try letting him sit in a dry tub with a bucket of water for a sponge bath. Sit down and talk with the kid (not talk to) and assure him/her that if there is something going on you canhelp.

"go brush your teeth" -- kid don't listen [2008-06-26]
You know, truthfully,I have a nearly perfect 7-year-old kid. He Why is it, then, that we have to havethis big fight EVERY night and EVERY morning regardinggo brush your teeth.Ihave to tell him this six to seven times beforeI am heard. Then I My onlythought is totry ignoring him when he requests something, making him ask me six to seven times. That might work. Gotta love him, but this really irks me.... Anyone else with a similar dilemma?

One of those so-called miracle teeth whitener kits on TV. SM [2008-05-06]
This one came with a special light . . . OH, RIGHT! I stood in the bathroom holding this stupid light (which I am sure was not more than a regular flashlight) up to my teeth, running to the kitchen where the light was better and swearing my teeth were getting whiter! Did this for a few days, applying the solution (which had no color, no smell) and NOTHING. After a few days of this exhausting procedure my teeth looked absolutely no better! TOTAL RIP OFF!

It's not the appliance, it's the way and how you brush....sm [2008-02-01]
It's recommended to brush your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice a day. We use an egg timer in our bathrooms to help everyone keep up with how long they've been brushing. I have a Braun professional care spin brush in my closet that I don't use anymore because they went way up on the cost of the replacement heads (even on eBay). During the couple of years that I used that I would end up with not as nice of dental checkups, i.e. the gums weren't always in perfect shape, but when I use just a regular ordinary toothbrush I have perfect checkups. They say that you can tend to get lazier about brushing with one of these fancier brushes and I believe that.

It's all a scam. All you need is a good, firm toothbrush - brush at least sm [2008-01-31]
for 2 minutes AND you have to floss every day if not almost every single day. Also, what keeps your mouth very clean are those whitening strips! Because it is loaded with peroxide, it actually keeps your gums and gumlines from developing bacteria that causes gingivitis. I used to get canker sores and sores in my mouth ALL THE TIME. After I started whitening my teeth regularly I haven't had a sore since. I bit the side of my cheek the other week and NOTHING surfaced from it. For years and years every time I would bite my lip or cheek it would develop into a nasty sore. I thank those Crest White Strips for keeping my mouth clean!

you need to buy the brush to put it on, total price for the first time is $28 [2007-12-12]
you can apply it in two different ways, one way in which you let your moisturizer dry and the put it on and another is use a bit of moisturizer to get that dewy look. Also you should always start off with less (at least with our brand) because it is layerable for a fuller-coverage. Also there are 6 different shades to choose from so you should be able to find a perfect match.

Anybody use teeth whiteners ? ...sm [2007-11-30]
If so which do you prefer the toothpaste or the whitening strips?. I would like to try one of these products but unsure if one is better than the other. Thanks

Whatever you do, DON'T get them in right after the teeth are pulled [2007-11-06]
Wait at least a year to get fitted. I was a receptionist and had to either quit my job or get my dentures immediately. Mine fit great at first and was told never to take them out (I didn't) ...then one day when answering the phone at work, my bottoms fell out. Thank heavens no one was in the waiting room. How embarrassing! I don't think I was fitted correctly as they hurt like heck where the bottom jaw met the top of the mouth. I cannot wear the tops now either. They are too loose. I had them religned after a year but it didn't help. Always had trouble eating and drinking anything. Gagged and choked all the time. I can As for your question, it cost me $700, 12 years ago and another $300 to get then relined. What a waste of $$ Think I'll change my name to Gums.

Rub some baking soda or corn starch into him well and brush out? nm [2007-09-25]

well, i dont have any teeth there. sorry to say. [2007-09-18]
i have all fake bridges and partials on the top of my mouth. i only have 1 jaw tooth left on the top that is my tooth, and its fine. i have had this knot for probably 6 or 8 years. but its usually about pea-sized. everytime i am diagnosed with a sinus infection it flares, but never this bad.

dog teeth [2007-08-31]
Like the posters below, I've never had my dogs' teeth brushed or cleaned. They eat dry dog foot and lots of generic milk bones and real bones (beef soup bones). They are both over 11 and when I took them to a new vet recently, she didn't believe me when I told her their ages because their teeth were in such good shape. I should be so lucky with my own teeth LOL!

Dog's teeth [2007-08-31]
My chow/mix lived to be 16 1/2, had only one tooth pulled, no broken teeth, had her teeth cleaned once or twice in her lifetime and I never brushed her teeth. Vets were all amazed at her age and her state of health. The week before she passed away, at her check-up the vet said that her teeth were in good condition and some of the best he had ever seen for a dog over the age of 10 much less her age. I fedher a gooddry dog food, walked her a lot, loved her more and never gave her any kinds of meat bones to chew on. She did have rawhide, pigs ears andthose stinky calf hoofs. I am not saying it is a bad idea to brush them but if it is a fight, why go through it. For so many years we did not do it for our pets and they lived long years. Feed him/her a good dry crunchy food and like suggested above get them some of the dental bones above. Keep them away from the steak/pork or chicken bones though. Have worked for a vet and too many surgeries for bone splinters in the stomach/bowel lining perforating it. Good luck

Any suggestions on a MILD toothpaste for sensitive teeth? [2007-08-31]
Seems like every toothpaste on the shelf any more has MAXIMUM strength this, that, and the other thing. Well, some of that stuff irritates the heck out of my mouth and gums. I'm currently using Sensodyne but it a) tastes nasty and b) irritates my mouth. Any suggestions? TIA.

Is there a baking soda toothpaste out there that might work? Is baking soda mild on your teeth?

My dad's false teeth! [2007-08-31]
OK, I admit it's weird. My dad had false teeth made for him courtesy of the Veteran's Administration. (Had all of his teeth pulled courtesy of the Army in WWII.) But dad would never wear his teeth. He hated them, and being toothless never seemed to slow him down. It was a real sight to see him eat corn on the cob, but he did it! His government issue teeth were always in our medicine cabinet in the bathroom, and he changed the water everyday and dropped in a fresh Efferdent tab. I only remember him wearing his teeth two days, for my h.s. graduation and on my 21st birthday. My dad was a quirky guy, but he was tremendously generous and a wonderful father. He died shortly after my 21st birthday. I have a sentimental attachment to his false teeth, and I should probably see a psychiatrist about that, but for now, I keep his false teeth in their container in my medicine cabinet, and theyEwwwwwww.)

Have you tried Crest for sensitive teeth? [2007-08-31]
I used it and it tastes just like regular toothpaste. May want to give it a try.

Weird too.. I have denture sample teeth. [2007-08-31]
My son's friend found a cute little box with about 8 drawers and they were stuck closed in his damp basement of his new-old house and he gave it to me, since I always like old collectibles, etc. Did not know what was inside so we dried out the box and got the drawers open and it is full of what appears to be samples for dentures or crowns.. I guess the man who previously owned the house was a dentist.. I was going to see about selling them on e-bay but never got around to it so they just sit in a closet. I did find a tooth with a gold filling in it though and that one is safely put away in my jewerly box along with the other gold stuff I never wear.. who knows with MT I may need to cash it in for some $$$ someday.

I never brush my dog's teeth [2007-08-30]
I have an 8-year-old German Shepherd, and I have never brushed her teeth, and I have had her since she was a little puppy. She was at the vets a few weeks ago for an update on her shots and an exam, and the vet said that her teeth were perfectly fine and that there was really no need to brush them. I give her tennis balls to chew on because she does not like bones, but that is about it. The vet said that the tennis balls should do a good enough job cleaning them.

You only wear them for 1 year unless your teeth are in really bad shape. nm [2007-05-14]

(Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson) PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her guardian angel. The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as Angela, was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements. Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled. I don Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse. I don The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend. You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid, Jones said. He was like her guardian angel. After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene. The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners donAngel. Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament. It Jones said of Angel's possible owners. For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most. I don Angela told NBC2 News. For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot. The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake. It he said of the Gulf Coast town. And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired. I wash every day but [2008-11-13]
rotate between 2 or 3 different shampoos. I find that my hair does better if I change the shampoo every few days. No conditioner when I have short hair. If its longer then I need it to get a brush through it easier after. I also don't style it much at all. I think the hair dryers, curling irons, etc. really do a number on hair. If I am going somewhere or if it is cold outside I will blow dry and style it but I try to do as little as possible in the way of heat. I use hairspray every day though to help give it a little body and not end up static-y in winter.

Pet Insurance [2008-11-09]
I have some pet insurance. It is $17 a month for each dog. I figure, for $200 a year, if the dog lives to be 15 that would be a total of $3000 over the life of the dog. Which can be less than the cost of a single operation. So I got the insurance. Andy had a minor surgery (removal of keratocanthoma) that came to $600, including $200 to have his teeth cleaned (not covered). After the deductible I got a check from the company for $300. I was pretty happy with that.

you'll have a retainer for life to wear while sleeping. sm [2008-11-08]
and please do. a family member had braces in elementary school and they came out beautiful. somewhere after marriage, kids, she stopped wearing the retainer. she is not in her 40's and her teeth shifted back to almost day one. wear the retainer while sleeping - it's no biggie compared to the waste of time and money and beautiful smiles.

Fluoride [2008-11-08]
use extra fluoride! in some states you can find a fluoride paste at the small, independently owned pharmacies. i can find it in the state where i am originally from but not where i live now. my ortho had mentioned it and all while using that i never had a cavity. this from a kid who had numerous cavities, not from lack of brushing or care. if you can't find that, ACT mouthwash has added fluoride too. you just want to make sure it is the last thing you use before bed so that it has a chance to sit on your teeth/in your mouth and be absorbed. my son uses the ACT and hasn't had a cavity since braces and starting this daily use. there is also special threading floss available for braces. my son's ortho didn't tell us about it but i knew from my past. its thin on one and and fluffy through the middle. when you pull it the fluffy part becomes tight like regular floss. its much easier to fee through the wires and the fluffy part can double as a small toothbrush in the tight areas around the brackets and such.

Also about the teeth being sore... [2008-11-08]
Our orthodontists both told us that if OTC meds do not help your pain, they are too tight and you should call for a 2nd adjustment. Your teeth should not be so sore that you can't eat a regular diet. Who knows, yours might have a different policy or idea, but don't suffer through the pain without asking. I did and they finally told me that I shouldn't be and they don't know that unless the patient tells them.

I have no experience but my DH has. He is 50 and [2008-11-07]
and just got out of them about 2 years ago. He looks fabulous! The only trouble he had was at first, his mouth was sore for several days, liquid/smooth diet, but after that everything went great. His were on for about 2.5 years and we could see the change after only 3 or 4 months. He is fastidious about his teeth (really always has been) always wears his retainer at night (a very small one inside the mouth at night only). Make sure you wear the retainer after they are off (assuming they give you one). You will be so happy with your results and the time will fly by. My DH was the ortho's oldest patient he had ever had!

Yes, I got them when I was 27 or 28 (sm) [2008-11-07]
The first thing is your teeth/gums (feels like your teeth!) are going to be really sore. Really, really, really sore. You will need some kind of anti-inflammatory if you can take them, and very soft foot. I mean you will not even be able to bite through a peanutbutter sandwich at first without pain. That lasts several days. After that they get pretty sore for a day or so after you have them adjusted (once or twice a month). Just brush really well (at an angle, all angles of the braces) and use mouth rinses because it is very hard to floss and you probably won't do it very often. A WaterPik (or whatever the newer version is) is also very good to have. Get wax for your braces and use it wherever they rub against your mouth so you won't get ulcers. I guess that's about it, other than that they are really worth it once you get them off! Good luck

Root planing [2008-11-06]
I had that done last year. It was not bad and I am a chicken when it comes to the dentist. Dentist numbed the side the hygenist worked on and it is a diff kind of high-speed instrument especially for plaque removal. It isan ultrasonic tool for teeth.I do not remember seeing any blood, but of course they suction all of the time. This instrument uses water and it is like a mist. My plaque was not that bad. In fact they could have done all four quadrants at one time instead of staging it. They just numbedwhat certain quadrant in case your teeth are sensitive. It was worth it too. I go every 3 months to get cleaning and checkup and do the flossing thing and have a WaterPik to boot. That price is just about what I paid too, but my dental insurance covered most of it. Hope this helps out. It sounds worse than it actually is.You should be able to see a diff in the gums too. I know I have. I have a great dentist too. I dreaded it, but after it overI felt like I really worried too much about it. I do not think anyone likes the dentist. I do not think that you would regret it. Good Luck.

I had a scalene planing (I think that is [2008-11-06]
what they called it). It is not pleasant. They go beneath the gums basicaly and scrape the roots of your teeth.

I made baked sweet potatoes for dinner last night [2008-10-21]
You cook them just like a baked potato. My 10 y/o daughter and I just like butter on ours. I love sweet potatoes though! I also have a really good recipe with apples and sweet potatoes in a casserole (see below). I brought it for Thanksgiving dinner last year and it was a hit! It's more tart than sweet and really delicious! Apple-Sweet Potato Bake 3 pounds sweet potatoes 4 medium tart apples, peeled 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1/2 cup butter, cubed 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup honey 2 tablespoons orange juice 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1. Scrub sweet potatoes with a veggie brush under cold water. Pierce skin in several places; place on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 35-45 minutes or until almost tender (I bake them a little longer cuz I like them pretty mushy). Cool slightly; peel potatoes and cut into 1/4 inch slices. 2. Cut the apples into 1/4 inch slices; toss with lemon juice. In a greased 11-in. x 7-in. x 2-in. baking dish, alternately arrang sweet potato and apple slices. Sprinkle with pecans. 3. In a small saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, honey, orange juice, cinnamon and ginger. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; pour over potatoes and apples. Bake, uncovered, at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until tender. HereHeavenly Sweet Potatoes by Campbell's Soup. Vegetable cooking spray 1 can (40 oz) cut sweet potato, drained 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 1/8 ground ginger 3/4 cup Swanson Chicken Broth 2 cups miniature marshmallows Spray a 1-1/2 quart casserole with cooking spray. Set the dish aside. Place the potatoes, cinnamon and ginger in a 3-quart bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until the potatoes are fluffy and almost smooth. Add the broth and beat until the ingredients are mixed. Spoon the potato mixture into the prepared dish. Top with the marshmallows. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until hot and marshmallows are golden brown.

I put on moisturizer first [2008-10-15]
I have been wearing Bare Essentials for over 2 years now, and I put a very thin layer of what I call a primer on my face and then let it sit for a few minutes and they apply makeup. Makes the makeup go on better. I have a question though. Do you ever have trouble with the powder from the makeup getting all over everything? Even though I use a minimal amount and tap the brush before applying, it seems to fall on everything else.

Soooo cute! I have a lab/great dane mix... scary to some 'cause he is so big. But he is a big wus [2008-10-14]
Are those mini-pins! A while ago I was running with Walter (my dog) and we came across a lady with 2 mini-pins. Walter wants to meet everyone and the lady said they were friendly so we let them sniff, but all of a sudden they were all over Walter with little tiny flashing teeth. Walter yiped like a little baby and skulked away and the lady said oh my they never do that. Why do they always say that, like it is my big dog Well anyway, just this weekend I saw the mini pins in her car at the market when by coincidence I parked next to it. When I opened my door they were up on the dash and leaping at the crack in the window and snarling and barking at me. I know they could not get to me but I cringed and hustled away. They looked really scary! I swear I felt like they could jump up on me and grab on something like my ears or something and not let go. But I am sure they are sweet... NOT! But it goes to show you never know... they are all animals, after all. And like people all have very distinct personalities, very much formed by their family (the people family, I mean). I could tell the owner of the mini pins was kind of a ---- well you know, not that nice... she left them in the hot car, after all... and they were pretty much a product of their upbringing. I too actually think pits have some of the sweetest dispositions I have ever met in a dog.

people chew their gum like a cow chewing cud or suck on their teeth after they eat. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

I agree with you [2008-10-03]
I do believe how a person raises a pet is the number one factor of how an animal behaves. Not all dogs are cujo dogs. One time my DH and I were taking a walk and some guy was out walking his pit bull. I didn't think anything of it, went over and bent down to pet it just like I would have any other dog, and he was so adorable and loveble, licking my hand and loving the attention he received. I never even once gave a thought that the dog would have attacked me for no reason. I didnyeah, go ahead and try it, your fingers look tasty, you don. HA HA, but to everyone else in the family he was adorable and wanted to be pet and held. I had an aunt who had a poodle that was mean as anything. So all dogs are different. I think its horrible that bad people have trained dogs to do bad things, but nobody should judge a dog by its cover. Me particularly, I am a cat person, but everyone in my family has a dog or two. I too would find it upsetting for people to judge one breed of dog who you find loveable and adorable just because of somethings that have happened with other owners. I remember awhile back Rottweilers were getting a bad name. I'm glad there are people like you out there who will give a pet the love and attention they need. Thank you.

I like Aveda and I have naturally curly hair. [2008-10-01]
It But it seems to make my hair so smooth and silky and manageable even when I decide to straighten it with a hot brush. Actually I like all the Aveda hair care products. I I especially like the cream to powder foundation. Easy to apply and then easy to take off at night, but I still use noxzema for make-up removal since I was a teenager. I don Not too found ofthe nail polish, but I like the eyeliners and lipsticks.OPI is the best for nail polish as far as I can tell.

I just watched the interview on the Today Show SM [2008-09-29]
where the a hung jury concerning the boyfriend of a woman after he kicked her seven pouond cat, Norman to death. No penalty at all. He says the cat bit him and he just reacted. He kicked it repeatedly until he broke severa bones, broke his teeth and injured his lungs and left it to die. This happened after a heated argument between the this man and his girlfriend. Can you imagine showing your face on national television saying you were pleased with the outcome in this brutal outright case of animal abuse? Over 200 pound man kicks a cat to death and he and his attorney are trying to justify this. What a poor excuse for a human being. He claims it was not done out of spiteto punish his girlfriend. You decide.

Why it costs 400 bucks [2008-09-19]
They make custom trays for you, which last pretty much forever or until your teeth move significantly, whichever comes first. Then you just buy the tubes of bleaching gel, which is not that expensive. The custom trays are wonderful. They are held on tightly by the gel. My dentist charged $300 and the gel was $35 a box, which is 4 tubes, which is a LOT of gel. I would not have the trays made right away if she has just gotten her braces off, as from what I hear her teeth are likely to shift somewhat.

The last time I had him get his hair just trimmed a little he cried beforehand and said I He is barely chubby, not fat at all, and brushing his hair in his face doesn I am all for kids having cool hairstyles and I buy him the type of clothing he wants, but he decides a week later that he no longer likes the shirt or shoes I just bought a week before when he really liked it.
