I pay most through my bank [2008-05-14]
Most banks offer a bill payment option. I get to pick and choose when and what and how much. I love this option as I generally seem to forget to buy stamps! Out of allmy household bills, only one is not paid online and it is simply dropped off.
My bank has free on-line pay so I pay all [2008-05-14]
of them except 1 that I have to send in the paper account info on. I also like on-line paying because I can set up my payments in advance for the due date when the bills come in and don't forget to send something in.
Either online or by phone with bank card. sm [2008-05-14]
I can't even remember the last time I mailed a check to anyone.

Talk to a local bank or credit union. [2007-08-15]
That is a HUGE downpayment and that will more than likely offset any bad juju as far as credit rating. You may be pleasantly surprised...we were and we also had crappy credit but because of the large downpayment, that worked in our favor and were able to get an incredible rate with a local bank. Above anything else, avoid those pieces of crap you see advertised on TV and on the computer. Nothing butpredators that should be smacked upside their heads with a 2x4.
Either the bank or Military Surplus store. [2007-07-26]
There would be only two reasons for me to run away from my home. One reason would be voluntarily, as in winning the lottery--hence the bank. The other would also be voluntary but there would be retribution involved--hence the Military Surplus store.
If you are serious contact the seller/bank- sm [2007-07-14]
and make an offer. How low they will go depends on how long they have been trying to sell, what they have invested in it. IF the previous owners owed a lot on it, the bank will probably still want fair market value. Years ago I thought about buy the house next door to my parents (about 3500 sq ft with a huge 2 car garage and an old pool that either needed to be filled in or total destroyed and redone), I went through it with the relator. The house was about 30 years old then, the previous owners and their 6 kids had basically destroyed it, burned/scratched up hardwood floors, broken doors, windows, etc. the kitchen was original from 1964 as were the bathrooms, etc. It needed lots of work, a new roof, you name it, it needed it. The bank would not take less than $200K-- I was not willing to spend that kind of money on a house that needed at least $100K worth of work on it. They eventually got some sucker to pay it though; and boy did they spend some cash on it. Looks great now and work about $400K at least, but they probably spent that much to fix it and buy it. --- one note of caution when you buy a forecloser though, I believe previous owner has a year to reclaim the property-- if they show up with back payments in hand, etc. they can take the house back from you, improvements and all and you do not get a penny back. So be subtle in your home improvements or wait a year to do anything major.
Also at my bank if you have direct deposit [2007-07-13]
of your paychecks you can get a direct deposit advance on your check and that does get posted to your account immediately. Has saved my butt more than once! LOL
I really do not resemble a bank so therefore [2007-07-11]

You should have just cashed it at their bank - sm [2007-05-30]
I know in the past that a bank had to cash a check drawn on their bank; they may charge you $5 to do this if you do not have an account there (I have had that happen recently. Did that years ago when an ex-boyfriend owed me money, took me 2 months to beat $150 out of him; day I got the check from him I took it to his bank and cashed it to be on the safe side.) I have no idea what they do if the funds are not there, but was under the impression they had to cash it no matter what. But if you deposit it, and it bounces you will not see a dime of it and the bank will charge you a couple bucks for their inconvenience. The store will get slammed with a bounced check charge though. The bank should mail the check back to you if it does bounce though so you can re-deposit it at a later date hopefully when the funds are there; at least that is what mine would do when a former employers checks to me would bounce from time to time (and I would be charged $3 for it bouncing which stunk). If you deposited before 2 (sounds like you did not though) you will have the money tomorrow, if it was after 2 then it wil be there on Friday; check in the morning of whichever day is applicable and you will have your answer. Good luck.
no, nobody knows but the bank, they will cover checks you wrote [2007-04-18]

Used to work in a bank, under some circumstances... [2007-04-18]
they will waive the fees, as another poster said, call them and explain the situation. I would do this occasionally after looking over the person as far as I am concerned, when I only have that much in there I consider it $0. BTW, how can you not know when DH gets paid? Is he on commission or something? Good luck, call the bank, they should be able to help you.
If it is like my bank they will cover you up to $500 -sm [2007-04-18]
and you have 3 days to payback the bank, which you already did. You did not have anything bounce, so no one will have notices saying not to accept your checks. The bank will be charging you though for their service of covering for you, so you may need to put in another $100 or so to cover that before Friday, check with the bank. You can probably manage your account on-line, check into it, great way to make sure you don't over draw yourself. I try to keep $1000 in the savings account for such emergencies, also with my bank they will automatically transfer the money in from savings to checking if I do overdraft for no charge since I have the money there.
Lawsuit! How to find a company's bank? [2007-03-01]
Ok, this is it and hope you can help me. I purchased a dinette suit 04/01/2006. The company said 4-6 weeks before delivery. Paid $640.93. I never got my furniture. I called, got very few calls back from them and finally decided last July after asking for my money back to file a lawsuit. The company did not answer the first filing in 45 days and then had to put in for a default. Just went to court today finally and got a default. By the way, the company did not appear in court!! Now I can go for a garnishment of the company with this documentation but do not have a clue as to where I would find out which bank this company does business with. If anyone able to give me any insight on this, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Anyone who has banking with Bank of America [2007-02-22]
you might want to know that the CEO of this bank has decided to let illegals have accounts here in the United States. No matter they are here illegally. I am in the process of changing banks.

of money, and the all time scam of the century. The couple times I was d*u*m*b enough to buy one they never, never paid for themselves. I never buy them now, haven't for years and have never had a problem with any of the products I bought that offered them. Believe me the companies that offer them (just about everyone) are laughing all the way to the bank....they take in way more then they ever have to pay out for repair work/replacments, etc.
Before you push the panic button sm [2008-11-14]
This is a recession, quite possibly the mother of all recessions. It may turn into a depression, but it will run a very distant second to the Great Depression, IF it does.
Pre the GP (Great Depression) you several things going on that are NOT true today. We had come out of WWI not that long before. It had been a very bloody war, the first war with mechanized destruction. What the Doughboys witnessed was for them what we saw on 09/11...unimaginable death and destruction. It changed how they viewed America.
When these boys came home from the war, they came back to the farm, by and large. We were an agrarian country and with the exception of east coast, there were hardly any factory jobs and most people worked the land. Plenty of places all over the country people worked on shares and they were not all in the deep south and they were not all black. There was not nearly the land/home ownership that there is today. Most of these dirt farmers lived in poverty and barely scraped by enough to eat twice a day. When the great Dust Bowl came through Oklahoma, it took the enormous clouds of dust eastward and dumped it into the Atlantic Ocean. This was a man-made disaster and the story of the Joads in the Grapes of Wrath centers on the Dust Bowl and the farming habits of families, like the Joads caused them problems. It was their fault that the top soil blew across FDR's desk in the Oval Office.
There was no infrastructure to speak of, in those days. There were roadways, but not the spider web of paved roads there are today. Goods were carried on the rails, not over the roads. You didnin town and the Sears-Roebuck catalog. If you couldn't find it there or could not afford it you either cobbled something together or did without. You can look the Coal Miner's Daughter about being so low-down dirt poor it is unbelievable. That movie is quite cleaned up and Hollywood presentable. You could look at the sparse surroundings of the ranch house in Broke Back Mountain where Ennis goes after Jack dies, and while the time frame is more modern, the very plain, only the very basics of life appear in that ranch house. They are both a bit sanitized, but reasonably realistic.
Today, Americans live extraordinarily different lives than we did 80 years ago. Most people have a vehicle. Most people have more than a dirt floor shack to live in. We, have thanks to the Great Depression and FDR's recovery plan, electricity, roads, water, sewage and other sanitation. We take these things for granted, but we should not. The GP did bring some food shortages, not because of the depression, but because of the lack of infrastructure combined with people on the move to find work to subsist. The food shortages you are thinking of came with WWII and rationing...another problem secondary to lack of infrastructure and subsistence farming where there was not enough food produced to meet the need.
If you are going to stock up on food, let be for more common sense reasons. If you put your money in the bank, you will make 2% or 3% return on $500. If you put that same amount into nonperishable food (think canned goods), you make a better return on an investment. You don't earn 2% or 3%, but you can end up leveraging against future price increases that will meet and exceed what interest you make from a bank, which is nothing right now. You will need food whether you buy it now or buy it later. Squirreling away extra under the bed or whatever place you can find room, is a wise investment...financially and in peace of mind.
I do pity you...sm [2008-11-13]
It sucks when you have a parent who has chosen to put other things/people before their children.
I donjob and not coming home to see his family for long periods of time. So you kind of feel like why should I feel guilty when he didn't? It is up to you if you want to see him more than the holidays and b-days.
My dad has chosen another family over his family. I am 31 years old and my parents divorced this year because my dad was running around. Well according to bank statements he is paying not only the woman's bills but is paying her daughter's car note and her son's electric bill, etc. Anything they want they got it. This woman's kids are in their 20s. I have to work to pay my car note and I am his own daughter. Which I realize it isn't his place anyways. But it is the principal. He has NEVER payed anything for me and I mean NOTHING. He has never given me money at all. My mom has helped me when I needed it but not him. But yet he can give them anything. He doesn't know I have seen those bank statements so he doesn't know what I know. It kind of makes it hard to want to be around him when I know what he does for them and has never done for me or my sister.
I kind of know where you are coming from in that I don't specifically care to be around my dad either and sometimes I feel guilty about it. But then again does he feel guilty for what he is doing? Apparently not.
Hoard food [2008-11-13]
Stored food is like money in the bank. And not having to go to the store for long periods of time can really help.
Nido whole milk (Nestle makes it and they sell it in the Hispanic food isle at Wal-Mart.) It costs just as much as whole milk, but of course you cannot store fresh milk and nonfat dry milk tastes bad. My kids really love this cold from the fridge. In my house, if you are out of milk everyone gets depressed. Also, cake mixes for cupcakes and candy for treats makes everyone in the house feel happier. Hoarding green beans does not really cheer anyone up.
Probably borrow from his parents - sm [2008-11-13]
they are loaded, though act poor (have a couple mil in the bank). Borrow enough to a pay off the house $40K if they would go for it, and I think they would, or sell the house (borrow from them until house is sold) and either rent for a while (we'd have about $140K after the sale of the house and mortgage paid off) or buy a much smaller house. We have land we can sell too so we would not be destitute though it would cause some problems.
nursing home - hardest decision ever sm [2008-11-09]
I had also made those promises to my folks, Dad was kept home on hospice 14 months, he had suffered brain damage from not being found for hours and was awful to all of us but we managed with a hospital bed, hospice and nurses, however, my whole family fell apart, fighting, etc., until he fell so many times and was so sick, we called 911 one night for help and hospice literally threw us out of the program. You are supposed to call them (in my state anyway) and they will sit with you while you watch them take their last breaths. Could not go through with that. Then we had no choice but nursing home, they took every cent they could get their hands on without touching my momshow up to check on them. Sometimes theyassisted living scenario, and after they clean out the bank book, they put them in a nursing home anyway, so thatsandwich generation between what to do with the parent and if you have kids, what is best for them. Itshow up and if you don it's tough to walk that walk. Take care, hopefully you will make the right decision. In some states you can have her in a nursing home and if she qualifies, you can also have hospice go in there for special care such as you desire for her comfort. Good luck, know we are all thinking of you.

Banks sm [2008-11-07]
I agree with the above poster. Your bank dropped the ball here. Did you write void on the check? Also I wouldnYou need somethingin writing from them and/or Wal-Mart. I hate the way Wal-Mart does their checks now. How do they know it is you that is cashing that check? A person could find or steal a checkbook and start signing andcashing checks at Wal-Mart. They don One more reason I don
Sounds like [2008-11-06]
you are saying a company Wal-Mart uses is charging the fee. Find out the name and contact them. If you don't get anywhere with them, ask your bank to straighten it out with them.
It should be obvious it was a mistake, and you should have been contacted.
Things are getting ridiculous these days!
Speaking of banks... [2008-11-06]
My DD opened her first checking acct a few weeks ago. She received her ATM card in the mail and, being a young woman, didn So she took the card to the bank and had it activated. After this, the PIN she selected at the bank would not work, so she took it back to have it changed. She walks into the bank, tells the woman she needs to change her PIN cause the original one doesn The kicker is...the woman at the bank DIDN'T EVEN CHECK HER ID!!! For all she knew, my DD coulda found that card and brought it in to change the PIN so she could use it!
I wrote a $10 check to Wal-Mart and turned in to a $40 mistake so far. [2008-11-05]
Here is what happened. When you write a check at this Wal-Mart here, they have you sign something and give the check back. I stuck it back in my purse. They are supposed to void. I was cleaning at my purse that day and paying bills at the same time. I wrote a $250 to pay a loan. I really don A week later, i was looking at my acct online. I notice that that $10 I had written to Wal-Mart went through twice. I called the bank and asked why. They said, oh, it looks like Wal-Mart double dipped. so I was refunded the money. I don Anyway, I became concerned about why that 250 check didn They said $10 was credit to my acct. I did not connect the 2 at the time. I thought, 10, I don The man told me he would look into it incase there was a mistake. He called back the day later and said that was a $10 originally written to Wal-Mart and we cashed it. So I called the bank and told them. They then had me go to wal-mart because they said I owed them $10 back. I go to wal-mart and they say no it is the Telecheck, company they use for this service andthey thanked me for trying to clear it up and said Telecheck will be contacting me. So I get a letter in the mail saying I owe $40 plus I am not allowed to write checks anywhere that uses their service until I pay that $40 back.
Whatscares me is that that check said VOID on it and that other bunch wasstill able to cash it and get their money, which I think was dishonest of them...also my bank let it go through. Now what if I were to loosea bunch of those type checks and someone cashes itAGAIN. Man I would be out a lot.Do you think any of this is right? TIA.
That's crazy! [2008-11-05]
I would write a letter to the bank and cancel my account with them. That is wrong that they cashed a voided check. Can't fault Wal-Mart for wanting their money, but the bank should be paying that $40, not you! Not saying its right, but the other place probably doesn't look at the mail-in checks very closely but just send them through to the bank. Bottom line, the bank should have caught that.
Sorry, I was upset at the time I wrote the original post [2008-11-05]
Basically, I sent a voided Wal-Mart check to a creditor by mistake and they cashed it and the bank let it go through both times. I called them on it. I was thinking that someone must have found that check and cashed it again. At the time, I did not realize my mistake. They then cancelled the payment to Wal-Mart, don They added $30 to the original amount.

Is there a way to obtain your credit report for free? I have never checked it. I have always been afraid to, but now I would like to check it now matter how bad and figure on a way to make it better. I have looked on line and found several sites offering free credit checks, but then pay a monthly fee for something. I don I have too many straws in my bank account. I was wondering if my bank would do it or maybe an 800. If I ask, wouldI get laughed out of the building imaging something for free?TIA.
Transfer your banking business to a free checking account [2008-10-22]
Washington Mutual Compass Bank, and many others offer completely free checking accounts. There’s no reason you should be paying maintenance and annual fees for a checking account.
That is my mom, she just doesn't get [2008-10-21]
it. She also thinks it is because of my husband. Nobody is good enough for me. Doesn She has been telling everyone it is because she will not lend us money. My husband and I both work our butts off and have never borrowed money from anyone but the bank.
My brother and I have not been the closest and about two weeks ago, I called him. I now believe that a lot of reason why we arenot close is due to my mother. He is four years younger and I was out of the house by the time he was 13. I always got my mother She told me he doesn He and I thought we didna lot in common, so most of the communication was between him and my mom, then mom would tell me. He doesn He said that she was always intervening in his life, no matter what it was. She kicked him out of her home when he was 15 and he has never looked back. He now has his PhD as a recent graduate and is very successful. We both believe it is a control issue with her.
That leads to this, I have researched grandparents rights as well. In Michigan, as long as the parents are married and fit parents, grandparents have no rights. If you were never married, separated or divorced or worse yet, proved to be unfit, then they have rights to see the children. Something to think about.

Never buy infant, toddler, preschool kids clothes brand new. Buy at thrift, second hand stores or garage sales. They outgrow them faster than the bank statement arrives. They also tend to stain and ruin clothes pretty darn easily and quickly.
Help! I live next to parents and they ...sm [2008-10-15]
are driving me mad, well my dad is anyways. I have always lived on my parents land next door to them. I live in a mobile home. Well my mom and dad divorced this year because my dad was cheating. He was calling another woman up to 10 times a day, going to her house, has give her everything he has. He owned cattle and sold them and got $32,000 for them. Well the money disappeared and he was broke before long. This woman he is cheating with is on disability and lives in a house and has a SUV. Her daughter has a car and son a truck and none of them work. Mama has looked on his bank statements and seen where he is making their payments. Well of course mom put him out. Like to never got him out. He got a mobile home and parked it on the land. She got 3 acres and the house in divorce. He has the remaining 7 acres. Well he puts his mobile home on his part and refuses to hook it up. He is staying in this trailer with no power, no sewage, nothing. There is only a bed. He has had the money to hook it up right. My mother has offered him part of the furniture and a TV. He doesn He refuses to live like a normal human being. Then he comes to my moms house every day when she gets off of work and wants to come in and take a shower. She is like no we aren You have a trailer and you go hook it up and take a shower over there. Well it has water to it he just doesn Well that is his own problem. He chooses not to have it hooked up because I guess he wants an excuse to come over to moms. Well she tells him no. Then he comes to my house and sits and sits. He comes over because he has no furniture and no TV or nothing. He comes and rumages through my cabinets and bums food. If me and my mom are at my house and decide to cook something he invites himself over there and helps himself. I have never seen anyone who was so annoying. I can He refuses to get a washer or dryer which without electricity it wouldn So he comes to my house and says can I wash my laundry? Well gues what? I end up doing it cause he doesn Then he leaves it there and expects me to finish it. I can not hardly do my work because he comes over and says are you busy? I just wanted to talk. I won Then he just sits there. I am at my wits end. I just want to move. He came over and said can I borrow a duffle bag? I said ok. I give it to him. He says I am gonna go buy one and I will bring it back. I never have got it back. Then he comes over and says can I borrow an ice chest. I let him borrow it and never get it back. He bums off of everyone here but this other woman and her children he gives whatever they want. He has taken money from me and my sister. He has borrowed money against my sisters extra vehicle she had paid for. He asked and she let him. he didn THis is his own daughter he did this to now. My husband had a pickup in my dads name because his credit wasn Big mistake. When the truck was almost paid formy dadborrowed money against the truck behind our backs. THen the truck is stolen and insurance has to pay it off. Well it was worth more than what was owing so we got the differnece. Well he had borrowed $1600 against it and said he didn So it came out of our insurance money from the truck. Finally when we knew he had some money we had to bug him and bug him for the money and he said $1000 is all he owed. He borrowed $1600 and paid one note on it before the truck was stolen. So we were out about $500. He takes from his children. I am at wits end. I want to get far far away from him. My sister lives an hour an a half away and she seems pretty lucky right now. What the heck to do?
Try community college first sm [2008-10-07]
It was not cool for my kids to go to college locally, so we literally wasted good money on out-of-state high brow -- only to find unhappiness at missing the friends, girlfriends, etc. One ended up back in state at a good university at a much less drain on our budget and he is now a professor there. Canreal stuff such as grad school, etc., which is almost imperative today to compete. Good luck!!!

I do agree with you, but I think some [2008-09-27]
could be people who have lost jobs. I live in a state where Bank of America took over MBNA and many many good paying jobs were lost with not much severence. So, in essence those people were making enough money and now they are not and with everyone else job searching, it is tough. The funny thing is that most of them decided to try IGA, which has now failed as well and are not in good shape.
Although I do strongly agree about the ARM loans, I think the trouble is coming from people who have lost good-paying jobs and have had to accept lesser pay but then the house won
It's sad really on both sides of that coin.
