I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this. Exercise. sm [2008-01-23]
Okay. I am overweight by about 30 pounds. A week ago I got back on the treadmill and started walking/jogging for about 20-30 minutes - 5 days a week. This is week 2. I Will get on the treadmill in a few minutes. I haha Don I know it I have NO desire to change my eating habits. None. Zilch. In fact, don I don I don I do like an occasional Coke. I like chocolate. I otherwise eat healthy, but until Jan of this year I have done NOTHING in the way of exercise for years. Just kept having kids and sitting on my bum.
When can I start seeing results and do you think that I can see results by working out this much and NOT changing my eating habits. It I can And what makes it worse (the eating part) is when I fail (which is EVERY time) I beat myself up afterwards and feel worse than before. With this jog/walking thing, I feel GREAT. I feel more energy already and I actually am enjoying the time alone doing it.
Anyone have experience with this?
You can but no one else can? Exercise those rights [2008-01-20]

Get some exercise [2008-01-17]
It will help tremendously. I start to get tired if I go more than a day or two without running on my treadmill or hitting the weights at the gym. It will help tremendously. As someone else said, it might not be a bad idea to get your thyroid checked out.
I sit on exercise ball .... sm [2008-01-10]
and I balance just fine with foot pedal. I dont Sometimes I switch out my chair and my ball. Just depends on how my bottom is feeling. I too sometimes sit with my leg folded under my other leg while working, but that I have really bad vericose veins (that's another story!)
good luck!

That looks like an ooooolllld carpet but in extremely good shape. Grew up with one like that many moons ago. Your dog must be kin to my 2 dogs who both sleep on their backs with all 4 paws in the air. They look so cute. Now that tennis ball looks like mine. I think your baby took it from mine as I can't find any of them..... Just joking.

Sorry you are feeling so down (sm) [2008-11-20]
First of all, relax. You need to go to a doctor and get on an antidepressant? No insurance? If you can get the money to go to the doc for one visit, you can get them to prescribe an antidepressant that is on Walmart's $4 list and get it for $4 a month. Call United Way and see if they can direct you where to get help with your rent. Don't worry about whether or not you have cable, you'll be okay without that unless you need it for your job? Don't worry about not being able to give Christmas gifts...just explain that you don't have the money. People will understand and your grandson can have it explained to him. I have the same isolation issues that you do because of the job. Can you go to a temp agency and see about getting a job outside of your house so you can be around people more? There is a website called Exercisefriends.com where you can meet people in your area who want exercise buddies, maybe just someone who is starting out trying to walk every day or something like that (not sure what your fitness level is). Or advertise on Craigslist for a walking buddy (but be careful of course when first meeting the person). I met one of my best friends this way and have known her for 4 years now. If you want an email buddy feel free to email me. I think everyone is struggling right now and it is hard. I would be happy to have you vent to me via email all you want. :-)

I agree with the above poster. Your bank dropped the ball here. Did you write void on the check? Also I wouldnYou need somethingin writing from them and/or Wal-Mart. She IS cute, but mine is even cuter! sm [2008-10-31]
You have to know, I am NOT a dog person, although dogs think I am. We never had them growing up. I have not been around them and when I have, I mostly can't stand them. They are either filthy and stink, have terrible behavior or terrible owner behavior towards them. It is always something. I would have told you I hate dogs, especially little poodles.
THEN, I downsized because the family grew up and moved out (well for now). I had not been here 3 months when I looked at my fenced yard and my loneliness, and started thinking about a dog. I thought I wanted a big dog because I have poor balance and I trip and fall all the time. A friend who used to breed poodles told me I wanted a poodle or a bichon. She said that poodles don't shed and that I probably needed a small dog. They often live longer with fewer problems and make better companions for quiet people who don't (in my case can't) take them out walking. Then, she got a poodle puppy for herself.
OMG I was IN LOVE. I said, find me a poodle! She said it could take a while, but she'd find me a red poodle. She called the next morning, my pup was on her way here. She was sold to me as red, but she is apricot with white trim. Yup, a 2-tone poodle. She was 8 weeks old, tiny and adorable. I was terrified of her, but I was determined I'd learn to love her and I'd take very gentle loving care of her, no matter how scared and stupid I felt. I'd take her out and play with her and hope I could manage to house break her when I had not a clue. We had many issues over finding a food she could tolerate without puking or scours, but we got there.
You know, she was house broken in under 3 weeks. I worked at teaching her to fetch a little ball and bring it back and she does it beautifully now (she is almost 2). She knows that I require she beg for a treat properly, so that I know what she is asking for and she knows she will get it. She knows how to tell me she needs to go out. When I got her, I said, that dog will N-E-V-E-R sleep in my bed. That lasted until she could jump up on my bed with me and I could not keep her off. She can sleep without me some, but I can't sleep without her at all. She has never chewed a shoe, never peed in something she should not, never chewed furniture or anything like that.
My daughter says she is spoiled. She has a basket of toys and she really does play with them. When she was in that chewy stage, I gave her tiny rawhide bones, which is why I have all my shoes intact. When I go out shopping, which is not often, I buy her a toy or a treat. She is so smart. I bring in the bags and she will go through each one to find what I got her, and never ever takes something that isn't hers.
Last year when my DD came home from college for a weekend and I had not had the dog too long, she kept telling me that my dog would love her better. Nuh uh! The dog loved on her only if I was not there to do it and then ignored my DD when I was!
We have the sort of relationship that every pet and every owner deserves to have. She is like an extra arm or leg, an extra heart with extra love. She is so much a part of me, and I know I am a big part of her too. I love this!!!! I still don't like other people's dogs for the most part, but I love this one to bits.
berry or fruit juice for diets sm [2008-10-29]
Heard the free trial offer for the acai berry (sp) on line is a farce because once you give all the info and agree to the low shipping charge, you are locked into an automatic charge to your credit card of 80 plus dollars. If you try to contact them, the phone number provided is non-operational and you are stuck. Is this berry product available in retail stores? Also, anyone find any pomegrant (sp) juice helpful and who has the best price on it? Need to lose some winter weight and it's not even winter yet. Kind of hard when you sit all day - I know, I know - diet and exercise! Told by my cardiologist to walk but recuperating from surgery, so not that active. TIA

who also has lost their life. Been at home home now for many years and the same thing has happened to me. Husband works late four nights a week. Love my children more than life and the thought of disrupting their lives makes me go into a panic attack. I used to have friends, wonderful friends of 30 years, but don't anymore. One went off the deep end after a divorce from an absolutely horrible man and hasn't spoken to me since and the other divorced a horrible nasty 500 pound slug and has since remarried and now has a new life and doesn't want to hear it with me anymore (even though I was there for the both of them during their horrible marriages divorces.) I have a large family with many sisters but they are so utterly cruel and narcissistic, the only way you can stand to be around them is you either have to be just like them or if you don't mind being destroyed because that is what they do. They destroy people including their family members. I, too, used to exercise every day walking four miles a day and exercising at the gym for about 1 1/2 hours a day. Lost 75 pounds and felt FABULOUS and had incredible stamina, but that has since all gone away and now I am right back to where I was. I have no money. My husband doesn't necessarily spend money entertaining himself but we are not financially together (and not because I am financially irresponsible but mostly because he is controlling and a wife with no money is not powerful). I have been applying for jobs outside of my house but haven't gotten one yet and unemployment in my state is through the roof. I feel as though I have lost my life. My children are getting older but my oldest who is in the 9th grade has ADHD and is very immature so to leave him for long periods of time during school vacation could be disastrous especially since he will be home with his two younger siblings who are 13 and 11. They fight unlike any other children you have ever seen. At the same time, I have an extremely difficult husband to live with who, most of the time, only sees his own wants. I sit here in my house (that we rent) every single day and try to figure out how to get my life back without endangering my children. My youngest also has severe ulcerative colitis and is probably looking at surgery in the next year to have his colon removed, which that in and of itself presents its own challenges to say the least. I don't know how I am going to get him or me through that one. I feel as though I have stress oozing from every pore in my body. I have nightmares when I sleep of becoming sick with cancer or my kids becoming sick with cancer. I have nightmares of being murdered or of someone else being murdered. I have nightmares of my sisters doing their terrible deeds to me. I, too, already take an anti-anxiolytic/ anti-depressant which does help but when you live like this, drastic measures need to be taken to get this straightened out and not just medication. I apologize for not being much help to you but I thought you needed to know that you are not alone and that there are others out there who are having the same problem. Just remember, this is a temporary situation and someday it will get better. That is what I keep hoping for anyway. Good luck to you.
Thanks for your suggestions....I do need to get some (sm) [2008-10-24]
good info and some exercise. Also I know you are right that getting up and getting a shower first thing would help me tremendously. I always fit my shower in sometime during the day but when I worked outside my home and took one first thing it always made me feel better.
Tolerance [2008-10-16]
This is my personal stance, my personal opinion and I am allowed to have it as much as anyone else is allowed to have theirs:
I do not have to, nor will I, be tolerant toward behavior that I believe to be fundamentally wrong, anti-God, anti-Christian and morally corrupt. It is MY RIGHT notto like it, not to tolerate it, and not to put up with it.
I do not punish or shun those who practice lifestyles that I am morally opposed to; however, I will not ever say that I agree with such.
Thank goodness my children are grown now but it is still the right of every parent to teach their child the moral principles they wish to instill. It is not the school's right, not the government's nor any self-proclaimed group's authority to act on to ensure they are accepted equally.
I don If we are going to pressure-cook the minds and morals of everyone regarding alternative lifestyle tolerance, we might as well exercise the same toward other groups with somewhat alternative lifestyles such as criminal behavior, etc.
How and what we think as individuals are our God-given and government-protected right.
Here's one idea SM [2008-10-12]
We always chipped in (each family) a few bucks toward a gift certificate at his favorite restaurant, or if you don't know his favorite place, pick a really nice place. If he's married then he and his wife can enjoy a night out. Of course there's always the idea of having all the kids sign a T-shirt or a soccer ball and presenting it to him as well.
Wait a minute... [2008-10-01]
Excuse me, but my son just turned 8 and this girl is almost 8. I have since found out that she did this to another boy last year (not as hard) and my son also said she will walk up to him and hyperextend his finger back and twist them, as well as flicking him with her pencil when she gets mad. I know of yet another student that had problems with her last year (an older boy) who felt bullied by her.
To me it just seems there is a pattern here that is only getting worse. It could have been his eye. Would you say it was no big deal then?? Where is she getting this behavior from? And yes, I think she needs special help in the classroom if she has behavioral issues. This is way different than kids fighting over a ball on the playground. This is a private Catholic school and they don In addition, their code of conduct that they recite everyday after prayer and the pledge of allegiance is that they will uphold the sanctuary for themselves and others.
definitely Australian Shepherd [2008-09-27]
they are intelligent, sensitive, kind yet capable of protecting well, very responsive...but they are not for everyone (for their need to be with you a lot, need for exercise, etc)
Feeling neglected [2008-09-21]
I'm guessing these children are feeling neglected and frustrated. The older one has more power to act out (and maybe more the personality for it), but something needs to be done to make them both feel more secure.
It would be nice if they both get involved in a learning/exercise activity (such as martial arts) to build their self-esteem.
Since you are a grandmother, you need to have a serious talk with your child about their parenting and the needs and safety of those children.
My 50 year-old DH is a grumpy old man! [2008-09-17]
If there is a male menopause, I'd say it's manifesting in general grumpiness in my hubby. Ugh! Everything seems to be the focus of some complaint from him. A pen runs out of ink, he grumbles and curses. Can't find his keys? Of course someone else took them and he grumbles and complains. Forget things like bills, or home repairs, or anything that really truly is irritating. His head might explode. When I ask him why he's so grumpy, he gets grumpier and grumps about my saying he's grumpy! Can't win! Sometimes I can coax him into a smile by imitating his grumpiness. He knows he's a complaining old coot these days. He gets regular exercise (runs 5-10 miles a night), eats well, balances work with rest. The kids are grown and we have our freedom. I can't figure it out. He should be happy and relieved. Instead, he's doing his very best imitation of Walter Matthau.
My 2 cents......... [2008-09-08]
Money is not the only thing he is lying to you about and you probably know it. Just what those things are, I don't know, but when a spouse lies and hides money, it is only a symptom of a lot of other things he/she is doing behind your back. That is why they become so defensive and try to turn the tables as if you are being ridiculous and just making up stuff. You know you're not going crazy.....you're a very angry fed up lady and for good reason. You know in your heart you have let this man belittle your feelings and make you feel less than a person. That's what they do to make themselves feel better about what they're doing.
My husband made very good money and for years, he always dropped off his check (when there wasnhis money and what he did with his money. Told me his boss keeps hundreds of dollars at a time in his wallet and he didn't trust his wife with keeping the checkbook.... she always overdrafted, messed up stuff, etc. Well, since I had been doing all that stuff for years with never a problem, I knew it wasn't because I was doing a poor job. He always insisted I do it because he just didn't have the time. His job was high profile and many hours, so I just didn't mind. I asked him did he want to keep hundreds of dollars in his wallet, did that make him feel like a man? I didn't understand his point. He just said if he wanted to, he should be able to. I never EVER told him what to do with money. We always kept everything in the open, joint accounts, etc. So, as time went by and he became angrier when I asked why he wouldn't bring his check stubs home, I loaded up the children and left. He was the type who thought I would do nothing and he was shocked as h*ll when I did.
The emotional turmoil that puts in your mind is simply not worth it. No answers from him, being told we don't have the money, when I knew full well we did and I would do without while he was out there blowing it on just stupid stuff. One day I had to use his car to take our child to school, let down the visor, and there was around 1600 dollars. That's all she wrote. I didn't believe for a minute he was having an affair. I just realized I was living with a very hateful man who didn't give a rat's butt about my feelings.
It's a simple as this, it really is. When a spouse starts lying about money in your household, there is a problem. In this case, you said your husband has been lying and doing this all along. I can't imagine how you must feel from day to day. Quite frankly, I just realized my husband just was screwed up and I sure was not going to go down with him and told him if he suddenly felt the need to hide his money to make him feel like a big shot, he could explain to the judge where he hid it when child support and alimony time came around.
Please give yourself some peace of mind. I know you are concerned about your children, but believe me, if they don't sense it right now, they will know daddy is doing something wrong towards mom sooner or later. It will affect them down the road one way or another.
I have to tell you counseling just does not work for that kind of man. You will have to play hard ball. He will never open his eyes otherwise and be prepared that he may himself live in denial about his problem forever.....do you really want to go down that path with him? When the kids are gone, you're still stuck with those feelings or lack thereof.
Is College Worth It? [2008-09-08]
As parents pack their youngsters off to college, they might ask themselves whether itAmerica
The U.S. Department of Education statistics show that 76 out of 100 students who graduate in the bottom 40 percent of their high school class do not graduate from college, even if they spend eight and a half years in college. That's even with colleges having dumbed down classes to accommodate such students. Only 23 percent of the 1.3 million students who took the ACT college entrance examinations in 2007 were prepared to do college-level study in math, English and science. Even though a majority of students are grossly under-prepared to do college-level work, each year colleges admit hundreds of thousands of such students.
While colleges have strong financial motives to admit unsuccessful students, for failing students the experience can be devastating. They often leave with their families, or themselves, having piled up thousands of dollars in debt. There is possibly trauma and poor self-esteem for having failed, and perhaps embarrassment for their families. Dr. Nemko says that worst of all is that few of these former college students, having spent thousands of dollars, wind up in a job that required a college education. It's not uncommon to find them driving a taxi, working at a restaurant or department store, performing some other job that they could have had as a high school graduate or dropout.
What about students who are prepared for college? First, only 40 percent of each year 45 percent never graduate at all. Often, having a college degree does not mean much. According to a 2006 Pew Charitable Trusts study, 50 percent of college seniors failed a test that required them to interpret a table about exercise and blood pressure, understand the arguments of newspaper editorials, and compare credit card offers. About 20 percent of college seniors did not have the quantitative skills to estimate if their car had enough gas to get to the gas station. According a recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy, the percentage of college graduates proficient in prose literacy has declined from 40 percent to 31 percent within the past decade. Employers report that many college graduates lack the basic skills of critical thinking, writing and problem-solving.
Colleges are in business. Students are a cost. Research is a profit center. When colleges boast about having this professor who has won a science award or that professor who has won the Nobel Prize, very often an undergraduate student will never be taught by that professor. It is a bait and switch tactic and very often your youngster will take classes not taught by a professor but taught in large classes by a graduate student. Faculty who bring in large grants are more highly valued than faculty who teach well. Teaching excellence is so often undervalued that the late Ernest Boyer, vice president for Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, quipped that, Winning the campus teaching award is the kiss of death when it comes to tenure.
Parents and taxpayers cough up billions upon billions of dollars to the nationbait and switch, confer fraudulent degrees and engage in other practices that would bring legal sanctions if done by any other business. There is little or no oversight of the nationChoosing the Right College (http://isi.org/college_guide/choosing_right_college.html).
I'm not really wasting time during the hours [2008-09-05]
that I am awake - it If I could sleep 4 hours a night, I could:
- always have the laundry caught up.
- always have my house clean.
- cook supper each and every night.
- keep my flowers weeded and watered.
- read at least a half an hour a day.
- spend time in devotions and meditation and prayer.
- exercise.
If I could accomplish these things throughout the week, then I could have each and every weekend FREE!I feel like I could gain my life back if I could somehow figure out this sleep thing.
Thanks everybody for your input.
Wow -these are excellent suggestions [2008-09-05]
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am 49 years old (feel 69 right now). I'm 189 pounds and lead very very sedentery life. No kids, no activity. I know I need to do some activity but I just can't get motivated. However, I do have an exercise video called Callanetics...very low impact aerobics (slow movements with very relaxing music), so tonight I pulled it out and starting tomorrow going to do that at the end of the work day.
I too have to have my caffeine and one day without it I sure can tell. Isemi-organic (at least that's what I call it). I refuse to take any medication (not even aspirin when I have a headache). I'm trying to go vegetarian (or more vegetarin) but I do like meat. Just got to lose weight and a bit more exercise.
Imy friend and I canbaby producing machine, yet I'm cursed with these blasted periods. Okay - sorry, that's more of my own emotional problem I have to deal with. I just want the periods to end. Your suggestions of herbal supplements are most interesting and I will be looking into them. Thank you again for your post.
How do you psych yourself [2008-09-04]
I I find myself constantly coming to this board. Sometimes I just feel I can I just got my first cup of coffee so that will help, but how do you psyche yourselves out to begin working a full day of typing, typing, typing, and more typing, and if you don I So I have to work. I have no choice. But I am so so tired. I I do like my job compared to others I have had, but I think I just feel so burnt out and wonder how other MTs begin their days. PS - I am not a morning person at all. I have tried, tried, tried to get up at 6 am to begin with a walk or some type of exercise but I can Is there a vitamin or something that would perk me up maybe?
More you can do to get the word out [2008-08-30]
Please pass the word along .... This toy, the Pimple Ball, has a single hole and a bell inside. It is made in 3 sizes. The dog gets the toy in the mouth, a vacuum effect is created because there is only 1 hole. If the vacuum is not broken immediately, vascular flow to the tongue starts to be impacted. The more force applied to remove the ball, the more stuck it becomes. If unsupervised while playing, the dog can reach a major state of distress before anyone realizes what has happened. The dog featured in this heartbreaking story is not the only animal that has been injured bythis toy.
If you have a vet that you frequent, make his office aware (I emailed the info to mine). I also called our largest doy supply distributor locally, and he pulled the toy off the racks as we spoke.
I know as of 2 weeks ago there was a petition started on the web asking Four Paws Inc to recall this toy until they correct the single hole issue.
Severe warning about dangerous dog-toys!! [2008-08-29]
I came across this blog today on Craigslist: http://www.thechaistory.blogspot.com/
And if you have a dog, it It details what happened to a dog that was severely injured by a dog toy called a Pimple Ball made by Four Paws, Inc. The dog ended up losing his tongue, and the pain he had to endure was excruciating.
The dog After watchinghis video linksof his poor dog's suffering, even though I have cats, I plan to be sure I don't purchase ANYTHING from this company, andhopefully you won't either.
Canning [2008-08-27]
I canned some tomatoes in their own juicetoday for the first time. I used the Ball Canning recipe and guide. There is about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of water at the bottom of the jars. I Maybe I crushed too many of the tomatoes for juice? Anyone done this before?
But obesity IS life-threatening. I type lots of that stuff - [2008-08-23]
and for the most part the psych. evaluation is more to be sure the person has not only the desire for the operation, but the support in place to help them through the difficult time afterward. It's not a walk in the park, not only is it major surgery, but there are lots of eating problems afterward. Too much food, or too much fatty or other hard-to-digest food, and they can become quite ill. They also have to begin a diet and lose a certain percentage of their weight before they get okayed for surgery. I think in part to make them safer to operate on, but also to begin to change their eating habits. After the gastric bypass, one still has to watch what they eat so as not to regain weight. But of course the bypass helps with how much they eat - because the stomach is a lot smaller. Still, if all the requirements are in place, I think for many people GP is much preferable to dying of other diseases caused by obesity. It also can make it possible for them to exercise and build up their cardiovascular system, further improving their health.

(i knew the boy played ball, that so i told my son that we so i that he had already had two broken bones. she said that her husband (the dad that kicked the dog), has had several broken bones, from wrecks and she said when he was younger, he used to fight (like street fighting type stuff, not boxing). but she said that he doesn i thought to myself, i guess he just beats up dogs now. i it even if there is no child abuse going on, the kids are going to think it's ok to hurt animals.
thanks for your opinions
i would recommend something different, [2008-08-19]
like calorieking.com It focuses on the nutrition as well as weight loss. but you don if you like it, subscription is $55/yr. and their site has LOTS of info, recipes, forums, etc. i did that the first year and learned alot; didn't work at it consistently and lost 15 lbs still. now i am just doing the food/exercise journal with their best little calorie book, for way less $ and that is working for me. but rather than 'diet' (i hate that word!)you want to make changes that are something you can live with, permanently.
