If you can get the materials like the above poster [2008-04-21]
It's easy to do yourself. I did the point system on my own and it worked really well. My daughter was on WW with me so that helped also. I lost 20 pounds, unfortunately put most of it back on and I'm at it again. My daughter on the other hand, became a vegetarian and lost 30 pounds in three months. Wish I could do that, but I like my meat too.

I think I can dig up some WW materials... [2008-04-21]
I have been to WW before, and I still have info about the point system and the brochures.somewhere My house clutter reflects my body clutter, so it may be hard to find them, but I have a couple ideas as to where they are. I I absolutely hate to diet and exercise. This is all very depressing.

I collect scrapbooking materials but haven't made one yet! [2007-10-05]

packing materials [2007-09-15]
Your comment reminded me of my mother telling me that during WWII when she sent packages to our family members she used popcorn for packing material so that everything in the box would be a treat.I always thought it was a great idea.

To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction [2008-11-12]
It won't be making any difference. I tried a couple of techniques for my adults and very soon I came to realize they found the antidotes for them. If there are 10 sites telling how to monitor your kids, there are 1000 more telling how to escape it. Down the road you will be pushing your kids to visit those sites (full of porn banners & adult materials) and nothing else.

My sister's (now ex)husband kicked her - sm [2008-09-29]
pregnant golden retriever in the stomach repeatedly because he'd had an argument with my sister. Then he went off to work, as usual. My sister didn't waste a single minute. As soon as he left, she called in sick to work, drove to the city, hired an attorney, and filed for divorce. She also put a lien on a bunch of building materials he was about to receive, because she knew how much $ all that was worth. Then she went to the hardware store. By the time he came home that evening, the dog was safely inside a house whose locks had all been changed, his other truck in the driveway had been towed away to an undisclosed location, and all of his personal belongings were sitting out at the curb. Oh. And since he had also hit HER, she had filed a restraining order against him. She got half the house, which the judge forced him to sell, even though he built it with his own hands, and was on a PRIME piece of property. She made sure EVERYBODY IN TOWN knew what had happened, and people stopped hiring him to do construction work. He finally had to move out of state. Just goes to show, you shouldn't kick your wife's dog.

This may be to personal for some of you but... [2008-09-25]
How is the economy crisis effecting you? Your budget, your retirement, your family, your FRIENDS families. How is it effecting the circle you run with? Do you discuss this with family or friends? It is effecting my family. The gas thing alone is cutting our budget! My youngest started college and is driving back and forth. I've called my aunt who lives close to the school and asked if he could stay with her a few nights a week to save gas money. The drive for him one way is 1 hour. It has already saved us $$$. The fact that he can't find a job isn't helping either. There are no jobs for young people. Even in fast food! Food prices have effected what we eat! Have you priced CHEESE lately? A 2 cup packages of shredded cheese cost more than a gallon of milk! Food has gotten outrageous. We have our primary home and we have a small cabin that we go to on weekends. Our primary home is paid for and has been but we do have a mortgage on our cabin. LUCKILY and by the grace of God, we are in a fixed rate situation but it's still difficult. Did we spread ourselves to thin? Sometimes it is tough but we budget and try to be careful with what we spend. Our payment is nowhere near the $1500 per month mortgages people are talking about - and at that price point with an adjustable RATE - I don't know how people are living. Also lucky that we do not have credit card debt. I've read where the CC companys are raising limits to increase spending while increasing the payment interest as well? I see more and more credit cards being used at the grocery store. It's all just very scarey for me. We have some friends who are building their dream home. They have worked and saved for 15 years. The economy is blessing them in some ways since there are a lot of people looking for work but hurt them in others as the price of materials skyrockets!

I feel the same way about the dust bunnies. [2008-07-10]
They are easy to see and clean up with a quick vacuum or pass of a swiffer. I've heard that a carpet that has been in place for 15 years can weigh nearly twice it's original weight because of accumulated dirt that doesn't come up with vacuuming. Our 100-year-old house has original pine flooring. Pine is soft, and we've refinished it once in the 25 years we've been here. It's a more rustic look, and I've raised 3 boys in the house, not minding any little nicks and scratches along the way. Now that they are grown, we'll refinish again. Plus, I like the option of changing the look of the room with a throw or area rug, if I like. Our addition has a subfloor which we covered with carpet. It's our family room, and the carpet is always dirty. The other end of the addition has a wood laminate floor, which has been the best flooring we've had by far. It doesn't scratch, it's easy to clean, and it looks and feels just like wood. Some laminates are cheap looking, as though they were Xerox copies of real wood. We spent more money and got a nicer looking product. When it's time to replace the kitchen flooring, we're thinking of doing a semi-remodel to remove the old vinyl flooring (which is cracking and tearing after 22 years), installing in-floor radiant heat, and then wood laminate flooring. I think that will look great, plus we can find some greener or enviro-friendly recycled products, as well. Newer green construction is doing less and less carpet, because durable flooring can be made of recycled materials, is cleaner, and lasts longer. Oh, and a friend of mine just had a cork floor installed in her kitchen. It looks amazing! I thought it would like like a bulletin board, but it's actually really nice. Since it's brand new, I can't comment on the durability. But it is eco-friendly, wasn't terribly expensive, and it really looks great. You might want to investigate that.

I did WW, a little differently though (sm) [2008-04-21]
I joined WW and got materials and first weigh-in but did not have time or money to go to weekly meetings. There is a website called 3FatChicks that is very good!! I lost about 40 pounds using them as my support group. I haven't been on there in about a year but I looked at it again the other day and they are still going strong. It is free and you can join groups of people doing any diet you choose and there is a big WW group on there. I have to get on track again too - I have gained so much lately! Good luck!

There is modular and there is modular - sm [2008-02-19]
There are 2 types of modular homes, the type that is like the manufactured home but of better quality, and the modular that is basically a stick built house, but it is built inside in a warehouse piece by piece, then trucked to your lot and put together. My neighbors have a modular home.....$225,000---so obviously it is not a plain old rectangular ranch house. This is a very nice home. So there are different levels of modular to be aware of. The cheaper version is undoubtly not built inside protected from the elements and probably uses basic materials. Research it out, the more expensive modular is actually better than a house stick built on your lot. Talk to builders, talk to other you see building their own home etc.

featherbed...long article [2008-01-21]
Ms. Evelyn is an extraordinarylybright little young ladywithreal sharp wit andhumor. HereCat ************************************************* Here and There: New mattresses can't beat good featherbedBy Evelyn Richardson Featherbeds were once a luxury when compared to a hard felt mattress or a pallet on the floor. They were a definite step up from a straw tick whose stuffing became pulverized by the time the next threshing season came around to provide fresh straw. We never raised geese, so when we dressed chickens, we gathered their soft breast and underside feathers to fill our featherbed. There was no concern about dander and feather allergies because we had not heard of such. Not only was the featherbed luxuriously soft but also it was warm. As we lay on it, the fluff came up around us to give us a snugly feeling.Of course, when the season changed to summer, we didn't want to sink into the featherbed. It was put underneath the mattress next to the open coil springs for storage until the hot weather was gone. When this switch was made, we took all of the bed equipment outside for cleaning. The sunshine revitalized the featherbed and made the mattress smell sweet.Dust and lint were thick on the springs and it fell my lot to deal with each coil individually and get them clean. My mother bought a cleaning tool from the Stanley salesman that was especially designed to fit the conical shape of the coils and I welcomed it as a godsend. These were the days before the miracle of running water and the availability of a spray hose to wash away the dust and lint. We propped the springs against a tree trunk and I began the painstaking task. There was a knack for making up the bed when the featherbed was on top. We lifted, patted and punched the higher spots to redistribute the feathers evenly. When linens were changed each week, we flipped and rotated the featherbed before tucking the clean sheet tightly around the sides.Blankets and quilts were added and a counterpane was the top decorative cover. Then to make the bed appear perfectly level, we took a broom handle and smoothed the surface, much the same as we would level a measuring spoon of salt with a spatula. We were not allowed to play on the bed when it was made up or to sit on the edge because there was no way to repair the dents without starting from scratch.Today we have scientifically engineered sleeping foundations, some with pushbutton controls, to give our body the support it needs when we are at rest. Once my father had a severe back problem during the days when doctors made house calls. A new doctor in town visited him and declared that the first thing he should do was to get rid of the featherbed. My father was both angered and insulted by that young whippersnapper. I suppose he took the pills prescribed, but he kept right on sleeping on the featherbed and eventually got better.Water, foam, air and all sorts of materials fill our mattresses here in the twenty-first century to give us a wide choice. And they cost considerably more than striped ticking that we sewed to make our own featherbed.

Yup! I have finally realized it! SM [2007-12-30]
It's funny because she will always call or instant message my husband or I whenever she needs something! Just a few weeks ago, out of the blue she called and asked if my husband could take her to Home Depot to get some materials because they wouldn't fit in her car and we have a big mini van with a roof rack. I told him not to do it because she is just using us! It's so annoying! The same thing happened to us when we got our new plasma TV last year! She came over and saw it and said, Oh I heard those things don She always has some sort of rude comment whenever she is jealous! I'm so done with her! Also, she wanted me to try to get her sontype really fast. I told her that there was no way she would be able to do it if she doesnOh, she doesn I guess she really is just a jealous, disrespectful person! The sad thing is, she is much older than me! I'm 26 and she is in her 40s! Amazing!

A couple inside [2007-12-13]
If you want to put together your own curriculum, sort of in the Charlotte Mason, classical style of education, there is nothing better than http://amblesideonline.org/. They kind of lay out a plan of study for you for each level, and most of the materials can be found online or free at the library. My sister is using it for her 2nd and 4th graders. Another one that I use for lots of extra printouts is enchantedlearning.com In fact, I was just printing out some of the Christmas worksheets for my 2nd grader to work on.

My daughter has ADD [2007-11-16]
She is not hyperactive, but has an extremely hard time staying on task. She will daydream, watch the butterflies out the window, count the number of times the girl sitting across from her breathes a minute, etc. She is in third grade and has been on medication for 2 years now. She struggled all through first and second grade and at the end of second grade we had her evaluated. she has a cognitive processing disorder and ADD. Basically, she can see it in her head but it is hard to get on paper. If she can hold it or actually do it, then she can learn it. It is hard for her to read a story and take a test on it, because she has not actually done what the story says, therefore she has not learned it. We noticed a huge difference once going on the medication, but the school also made some accommodations in the classroom. She gets some extra time to take a test if she needs it, she can take her test away from the rest of the class if she needs to, her teachers have been wonderful about giving her extra one-on-one support and giving us materials to study at home. I certainly do not endorse medicating every child who is just very active and talkative, and this was a huge struggle for my husband and I to commit to putting our daughter on medications. We said we would try it for a few months and if it worked, great. if it didn't, then we would take her off the medication. It was literally like night and day. She can sit still longer, she is able to finish a problem without getting distracted, she can think clearer, etc. She calls them her magic pills. She tells us they have helped her to think better and it is easier to listen. You didn't say how old your son was. Is he in elementary school?

addendum...Cornell [2007-10-06]
Joseph Cornell - Assemblage Art Joseph Cornell (1903-73) was an American artist; born in Nyack, N.Y. He is best known for his shadow boxes made of found objects, maps, photographs, engravings, and other materials. Influenced by SURREALISM, these constructions are personally symbolic and evocative. (Biographical information copied from Ask Jeeves Encyclopedia 2001 - no longer online) He had no formal training in art and his most characteristic works are his highly distinctive `boxes'. These are simple boxes, usually glass-fronted, in which he arranged surprising collections of photographs or Victorian bric-à-brac in a way that has been said to combine the formal austerity of Constructivism with the lively fantasy of Surrealism. Like Kurt Schwitters he could create poetry from the commonplace. Unlike Schwitters, however, he was fascinated not by refuse, garbage, and the discarded, but by fragments of once beautiful and precious objects, relying on the Surrealist technique of irrational juxtaposition and on the evocation of nostalgia for his appeal (he befriended several members of the Surrealist movement who settled in the USA during the Second World War). Cornell also painted and made Surrealist films. (This information copied from WebMuseum) Preserved in Cornell a clay pipe and a diagram of the orbits of earth and the moon; images of a Medici Princess, each accompanied by a wooden sphere; and a translucent marble in a cascade of blue sand. Cornell fuses his work with poetic intensity, and a private and enigmatic sentiment, which together affect the viewer as if these very objects formed a recording of a burst of Cornell's sense of joy, or wonder, or love, or sadness. Though now highly sought after by Museums and private collections, Cornellboxes, which he began to make in the 1930s were not originally conceived as being for such a wide audience. Rather, they were made as gifts for individuals sometimes living, sometimes dead, often people the artist had never met, but who in some way had touched his life. Woohooo! Congratulations! [2007-07-14]
For odds and ends, don I mentioned it to my daughter, and I Shegotten new bathroom sinks for her house complete with faucetsfor $10 eachfrom somebodyon the list that just moved into a (new) house and decided to have the sinks upgraded. I like to visit Home Depot, Lowe and rolls of wallpaper for @ $1.00 each. If you know the square footage you need to cover, you may be able to doa roomfor as little as $5.00 instead of $250. Of course whenever my kids are redecorating, they go to my storage cabinets, find something that suits them, and take my finds home for free. I do the same thing in the paint departments there and at Benjamin Moore. I I do decorative and faux finish effects and always like to have a variety of colors in stock at my house for raw materials and am not afraid to mix paint colors to achieve the exact color I want. As for the house, congratulations! I'm a huge believer in sweat equity.

Out of curiosity, [2007-06-08]
how is the on-line WW? I went to one meeting and bought all the books/materials and have just been trying to do it on my own. Does the on-line version offer a lot of benefit? Does it help with following the plan or is it more for support?

Thank you for those of you who gave valuable info! [2007-04-07]
I've lived in an apartment my entire adult life and had no idea that a fence would cost that much and all the tools/materials that are involved in building a fence! I got some great info from the majority of the people that responded and truly thank those people :)

3 years is a long time. Don't you think [2007-02-01]
What if the carpet store does not have the same carpet after 3 years. Also, carpet repairs are not cheap. You have to pay labor and the cost of materials. It would probably be easier just to get the whole room replaced or simple as it sounds, put a throw rug over it and call it a day.

Where do I enroll in that program? [2007-01-09]
Do they provide the class materials?????

I know exactly what you are going thru!! sm [2006-11-30]
My middle daughter was fine with kindergarten and about 1/2 of first grade. When she got to second grade she was a littel behind, but as the year went on she got more and more behind. We had a horrible teacher for second grade and would offer no help to the kids who were behind and she refused to give instructions more than once because she believed they should be old enough to get it with only one time of instructions!! I got materials from on line tutoring sites and printed out second grade work for her to work on at home. Over the summer I hired a tutor to catch her up. She is in third grade and is an A-B student. Sometimes you have to take over your childs education and make sure they get what they need. My daughter still gets behind, but I am quick to get back on line and get her materials to help her study and get what she needs. We also have a much, much better teacher this year! We looked into private schools at one time, but with my older daughter already in junior high and another one ready for kindergarten I didnt want to get into multiple schools. I didnt look into home-schooling, for a variety of reasons. Hope things work out for you. Try going online and getting some ideas and papers to work on with her in your spare time and on weekends. I found a lot of really great materials and some were actually fun for her to do.

16th [2006-10-31]
How about putting together a scrapbook all about her life? I know you don't have much time but they have some wonderful scrapbook materials out now to make it easy and beautiful. If she's like my daughter, they love having pictures of their friends/activities/life/families, etc. in a book that is all about them that she can look back on in years to come.

Don't do it if you are meticulous about your teeth. [2006-10-19]
I went to a dental clinic like that years ago. I had to replace the cap work shortly after and they did some other procedures not so well, a root canal that didn't take or was incomplete, etc. The next dentist I saw said it was some of the worst work he had ever seen and he was surprised with the quality of the materials (very cheap) they were using. So it only wound up costing me more in the long run. Just thought I'd mention.
