Thanks! Do you remember when Nick went away to boarding school at something like 7 and came back 19? It's completely crazy but I know they have to do it to keep the story line going. I can't wait to see what he looks like though...Sharon or Nick. Michael's dad, I thought that was a dead issue. I wonder who decided to go ahead with finding him. Here we go with Gloria again huh. lol I missed today but watched yesterday's online. I'm so glad Victoria got a chance to talk to Sabrina. I'm still hoping Sabrina doesn't kick the bucket but sounds like she will. I wonder how Adam will like step-mommy Niki moving into the ranch...I think that's where things are headed.

This season has been full of twists and turns! sm [2008-05-09]
Boy, what a goon Eric is!!! I think he is such an innocent young man. To trust those women, good grief! I believe he is the only person ever to give up immunity in all the seasons of the show. It was bad enough when James got voted off with two idols in his pocket, but I think last night with Eric handing over his power to those girls was insane. He was dominating the game, yet he allowed himself to be sucked in. Amanda has played a cool game with her manipulation of various players. I can see her winning. I cannot say I care much for the other two girls as winners at this point, but we shall see. I will definitely be watching on Sunday!

My husband has a kennel full of beagles...sm [2008-02-27]
He rabbit hunts with them and loves it. Before rabbit season went out which I think it just did he was hunting rabits with the beagles all the time. I think he enjoys the dogs hunting and watching them more than actually wanting rabbits. My husband has said he will never move to a subdivision either because he wants to be in the country where he can have his privacy and dogs and all but that doesn't bother me. I am fine living in the country. I couldn't take the keeping pigenos in a cage just to kill them. I would not like that. Now my husband if he has been hunting does tick checks on himself before he gets a shower. That is gross to just leave them until you are ready to pluck them off. I couldn't handle the junk either in the yard. My husband would have our yard looking like no telling what if I would allow it but I just stay on his you know what and I keep it looking pretty good. If he leaves a mess and doesn't clean it up in due time I have to do it because I don't want my yard looking like junky. Now when it comes to being mean to the dogs and mistreating them there is no faster way to just make me mad as a firecracker. If someone makes the mistake of mistreating a dog in front of me I will go of. I don't think I would be able to restrain myself. I might have to actually become violent. That is just the way I am. I love animals and especially dogs. My husband doesn't mistreat his dogs. But he knows if he ever did he would pay dearly. I do not tolerate cruelty to animals. Animals many times can't defend themselves but I can.

Path of the Moon through Earth's umbral and penumbral shadows during the Total Lunar Eclipse of February 20, 2008. (Eastern Standard Time) Introduction A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the night of Wednesday, February 20/21, 2008. The entire event is visible from South America and most of North America (on Feb. 20) as well as Western Europe, Africa, and western Asia (on Feb. 21). During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray. An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs. For more information on how, what, why, where and when of lunar eclipses, see the special web page lunar eclipses for beginners. Lunar Eclipse Diagrams The following diagrams show the Moon's path through Earth's shadows (higher resolution versions of the above figure). The times of major stages of the eclipse are given for a number of time zones in North America. Please choose the diagram for your own time zone. Each diagram is a GIF file with a size of about 100k. However, the Moon actually moves WEST to EAST (right to left in the Northern Hemisphere) with respect to the Earth's shadow and the stars. Times and Phases of the Total Lunar Eclipse of February 20/21, 2008 From start to finish, February's lunar eclipse lasts about three hours and twenty-six minutes (not including the penumbral phases which are very difficult to see). The partial eclipse begins as the Moon's eastern edge slowly moves into the Earth's umbral shadow. During the partial phases, it takes just over an hour for the Moon's orbital motion to carry it entirely within the Earth's dark umbra. The color and brightness of the totally eclipsed Moon can vary considerably from one eclipse to another. Dark eclipses are caused by volcanic gas and dust which filters and blocks much of the Sun's light from reaching the Moon. But since no major volcanic eruptions have taken place recently, the Moon will probably take on a vivid red or orange color during the total phase. After the total phase ends, it is once again followed by a partial eclipse as the Moon gradually leaves the umbral shadow. The total phase of a lunar eclipse is called totality. At this time, the Moon is completely immersed within the Earth target=new2> August 28, 2007) which lasted 90 minutes. The major phases of the eclipse occur as follows (all times are GMT or Greenwich Mean Time). The partial eclipse commences with first umbral contact at 01:43 GMT. Totality begins at 03:01 GMT and lasts until 03:51 GMT. The partial phases end at 05:09 GMT. Eclipse times for time zones in the United States and Canada are shown in the following table. To determine the Moon target=new2>Javascript Lunar Eclipse Explorer. This web page allows you to calculate the viewing circumstances of all lunar eclipses visible from your city over a five-thosuand year period. Visibility of the Total Lunar Eclipse of February 20, 2008 February's lunar eclipse is well-placed for North and South America as well as Europe and Africa. Observers along North America's west coast miss the early stages of the partial eclipse because it begins before moon rise. Alaskans in Anchorage and Fairbanks experience moonrise during totality but bright evening twilight will make it difficult for sourdoughs to view the event. Western Europe and northwest Africa also see the entire eclipse. Further to the east (east Africa and central Asia), the Moon sets before the eclipse ends. None of the eclipse is visible from eastern Asia or Australia. Preceeding and following the eclipse are hour-long penumbral phases but these are faint and quite difficult to see. The more interesting and photogenic partial and total phases always take center stage to the penumbral phases. Map showing the global visibility of the Total Lunar Eclipse of February 21, 2008. (Click here to see larger version of this map) Key to Eclipse Visibility Map P1 Penumbral eclipse begins (not visible to the eye) U1 Partial eclipse begins U2 Total eclipse begins U3 Total eclipse ends U4 Partial eclipse ends P4 Penumbral eclipse ends (not visible to the eye) The map above shows the geographic regions of visibility for each phase of the eclipse. The entire eclipse is visible from start to finish in the white (unshaded) portion of the map, while none of the eclipse can be seen from the dark gray areas. For anyone located in the blue shaded region labeled Eclipse at Moonset, this means that the Moon will set while some phase of the eclipse is already in progress. The contact curves labeled P1, U1, U2, U3, U4, and P4 represent each phase of the eclipse (see the key above). If you are east (right) of a particular curve, that phase occurs after moonset and you will not see it. However, if you are west (left) of a curve, that phase occurs before moonset and you will see it (weather permitting). For example, on the above map Turkey lies west (left) of the U3 curve (total eclipse end) and east (right) of the curve U4 (partial eclipse ends). This means that from this region, the Moon sets during the partial phases following totality. For observers located within the second blue shaded region labeled Eclipse at Moonrise, the situation is reversed. Here the Moon rises while some phase of the eclipse is already in progress. If you are west (left) of a particular curve (P1, U1, U2, U3, U4, or P4), that phase occurs before moonrise and you will not see it. However, if you are east (right) of a contact curve, that phase occurs after moonrise and you will see it (weather permitting). All total eclipses start with a penumbral followed by a partial eclipse, and end with a partial followed by a penumbral eclipse (the total eclipse is sandwiched in the middle). Since the penumbral phases of the eclipse are so difficult to see, we will ignore them. Wonderful Totality At the instant of mid-totality (03:37 GMT), the Moon will lie in the zenith for observers in French Guiana. At this time, the umbral eclipse magnitude peaks at 1.1062. From the diagram above, it is clear that the northern (top) edge of the Moon will dip much deeper into the Earth target=new2>Danjon Brightness Scale). Note that it may also be necessary to assign different Danjon values to different portions of the Moon at different times. This could be an excellent opportunity for budding astronomers and students to test their observing skills. Try recording your estimates of the Moon target=new2>Danjon Scale. Since the Moon appears quite small in the sky, you target=new2>lunar eclipse photography. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch. Protective filters are not necessary and neither is a telescope. A lunar eclipse can be observed with nothing more than the naked eye. However, a pair of binoculars will magnify the view and make the red coloration brighter and easier to see. A standard pair of 7x35 or 7x50 binoculars is sufficient. During the eclipse, the Moon will be in Leo. Saturn and bright star Regulus are only 3 degrees east and west, respectively, of the Moon. Geminii, Orion, Taurus and other winter constellations will occupy the south and western sky for North American eclipse watchers. viewers. Although total eclipses of the Moon are of limited scientific value, they are remarkably beautiful events which do not require expensive equipment. They help to cultivate interest in science and astronomy in children and to provide a unique learning opportunity for families, students and teachers. To the nature lover and naturalist, the lunar eclipse can be appreciated and celebrated as an event which vividly illustrates our place among the planets in the solar system. The three dimensional reality of our universe comes alive in a graceful celestial ballet as the Moon swings through the Earth's shadow. Hope for clear skies, dress warmly and enjoy the show! Eclipse Frequency and Future Eclipses During the five millennium period from 2000 BC through AD 3000, there are 7,718 eclipses[1] of the Moon (including both partial and total eclipses). From 0 to 3 lunar eclipses (partial or total) occur each year. The last time three total lunar eclipses occurred in one calendar year was in 1982. On average, partial eclipses slightly outnumber total eclipses by 7 to 6[2]. [1] Only eclipses where the Moon passes through Earth's umbral shadow are included in these values. A minor type of eclipse is the penumbral eclipse which occurs when the Moon passes through the Earth's faint penumbral shadow. Penumbral eclipses are rarely discernible to the naked eye and are of lesser importance than umbral eclipses. [2] Penumbral eclipses are excluded from these statistics. The last total lunar eclipse visible from the entire continental United States occurred on August 28, 2007. North Americans will have their next opportunity to see a total lunar eclipse on 2010 Dec 21. The table below lists every lunar eclipse from 2007 through 2012. Click on the eclipse Date to see a map and diagram of an eclipse. Although penumbral lunar eclipses are included in this list, they are usually quite difficult to observe because of their subtlety. The penumbra is a partial shadow which still permits some direct sunlight to reach the Moon. The Umbral Eclipse Magnitude is the fraction on the Moon's diameter immersed in the umbra at maximum eclipse. For values of 1.0 or greater, the eclipse is total. For negative values, the eclipse is penumbral. The Total Duration is the duration of the total phase (total eclipses only). Full blown celiac here sm [2008-02-16]
If I eat wheat or oatmeal (I can It is TMI, but celiac stools are yellow to chalky gray, even white, NOT normal and are extremely foul as well. What this can do to you is make you anemic. You can have malnutrition from never being able to absorb the good stuff in your food. You might be either very thin or rather overweight, but you always feel horrible, no energy, tired. Food never makes you feel better, no matter how hungry you are and how much/little you eat. Celiac sprue is considered an autoimmune at this point. The body can Oatmeal has gluten, but it is chemically different from the others mentioned here. Some celiacs can eat it, some cannot; I cannot. You can What happens when you eat gluten all the time, is that the villi in the intestines flatten and/or fall off. Their surfaces exchange nutrients from the gut into the body. If they are not present or not functional, it dimishes absorption by 80%. On the other hand, celiacs who go on a gut healing diet will have their villi return to a healthy state (about 90% of celiacs recover the lining of the gut). If you have another AI, you have to know that celiac likes to piggyback with other AI disorders, particularly SLE and Sjorgen Also, it is believed that 2/3 of celiacs are concurrently lactose intolerant and/or allergic to dairy. It is estimated that in the US about 1:150 people is a celiac, whereas 1:4500 will be diagnosed during their lifetime. Never fear, however...gone are the days of rice cakes and hard rice bread! There are many many books on making gluten free bread with bean and alternative grain flours. There is plenty on the internet too. The best book I can recommend is The Allergy Survival Guide by Melina, Stepaniak and Aronson. It is everything free...no animal products, eggs, dairy, nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, yeast, soy...and the recipes are DIVINE. The best part is that since going on a GF diet last summer I rarely have a day when I am tired and feel crappy, as long as I behave. I have lost about 40lbs with no effort, unless you call eating fruit, veggies, soy and beans constantly in as large a quantity as I like, an effort.I have been able to add some GF desserts back into my diet and not gain weight. I also have SLE and I am on 7.5 mg of prednisone every day (weaning to 5 mg). Despite doing a 2-month loading dose of prednisone to get the SLE under control last summer, I dropped 18 lbs the first month on it and another 10 the next month and we all know what pred can do to your waistline. I'll go and make my polenta crust pizza for supper and enjoy the fact that I won't feel sick after I eat and it will taste wonderful.

Before this turns into a full blown....sm [2008-02-05]
back and forth free for all, you also don't know me personally to make assumptions about my personality. This has gotten old quickly, so I'll leave with these thoughts. You expressed an opinion saying you were ill about her treatment which you thought was above and beyond. I expressed an opinion, in turn, basically saying if you were in her situation you would want that same protection, considering it's very plausible that it's the obsessive fans and need to know that probably put her in this situation. Opinions are opinions, facts are facts, and considering all the information any of us knows come from cutthroat reporters who are looking to make that big story, it would be rare if anyone knew any true story about a celeb. I know if I were famous and hounded by people 24/7, and having a mental breakdown to boot, you can bet your bippy I'd do whatever in my power to make sure I had nobody around who could violate my privacy any more than it had already been violated. As for the doctors getting suspended, if they weren't on her case, and it's not a teaching hospital, and if she has security, then it's for a reason, and they should have known better than to violate her privacy. Doctors can violate HIPAA just as easily as anyone else, and that's what they were doing, because it's also very possible that those same docs who just wanted a quick peek, probably couldn't keep it to themselves, or they wouldn't have been nosing in her business in the first place. They got less than they deserved. Walk a mile in her shoes. Have sympathy and compassion in your heart for those who need it, which she obviously does!

room and board and books paid to Stanford University. She had very good grades and we filled out the FAFSA. They gave a huge financial package to her becuase of our income, which is middle class, but so many people who go there have higher incomes that we qualified for quite a bit of aid. You should apply to whatever school you want to go to because you never know how much they will offer. She also has taken out the PLUS loan for the last 3 years, but the total will be less than half a year of tuition. She is a junior this year and we are so glad she didn't let financial worry keep her from applying to the university she dreamed about. Good luck.

I bought a couple of them when they were on sale because they were really cute (black with pink ribbon trim and leopard print demi-cup with pink ribbon trim), but didn't really expect much from them and figured they'd just look nice. Imagine my surprise when not only did they look great, they actually provided support, lol!!! I found that the demi-cup is actually even MORE supportive than the full cup style, which I hadn't expected. Have fun and show those girls off to full advantage :-)

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation 1863 [2008-11-19]
Abraham Lincoln while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.By The President: Abraham LincolnWilliam H. Seward, Secretary of State

Here is how to measure yourself sm [2008-11-19]
Measure under your bust, around your rib cage where your bra band goes. Take that number and add 5 inches. That is your band size (i.e. 35 inches +5 you are a 40). Then, measure around the fullest part of your bust. This will determine your cup size. Using the BAND SIZE (adjusted measurement above)... 1 inch bigger = A cup 2 inches bigger = B cup 3 inches bigger = C cup 4 inches bigger = D cup 5 inches bigger = DD cup etc. By this method, I am supposed to be a 36C, but I know that Hanes Her Way and some Bali's I need a 36D. You still have to try stuff on, obviously (it should be obvious but I have bought thinking I knew and could not return them!) because styles and brands vary a bit. I will say this about Wonder Bras and others with removable padding in them...they just are not as nice and smooth as one that is molded foam for pushing up. I think it is either Vasserette or Bali that makes several styles with foam cups with the pad molded in. And...your bra should fit on the very last hook always and be parallel to the floor, not riding up in back or front. You should not look like your breastages are pushed squished up towards middle. That is not like pushing up, that is from cups that are too close together to start with, the wrong size bra! I used to wear a 38, but I didneven and only one cup would be full at a time. Umm they were too close together? I got a 38 and discovered I had more chest than I had thought. Now, I have dropped 55 lbs and I am back to a 36. So, if you shift weight, remeasure.

I'm in Florida and spend about $175/wk for 5 sm [2008-11-18]
I5 and 158 lbs, eats more than my husband, who is 6 and 345 lbs. FIL had to have a feeding tube put in last July, and I had to cut down meals by half because we were having so many leftovers and wasting money. Just when I thought I had it figured out, he was able to get the tube removed, so II donwe (FIL and I) will just eat a sandwich or leftovers from the fridge As far as special foods, we dona recipe, and for a while we were buying meat ata butcher shop but have had to cut that out for now. It was really good but was close to DH's work, and if he couldn't pick it up while he was in the area, it was a 45-minute drive. I cook most things from scratch, except lasagna because I hate making it. Once a month, we have a luncheon at church that I bring a dish and a dessert, and I cook Wednesday night dinner there one night per month, but I get reimbursed for the Wednesday night dinner. I do include paper products and toiletries in with my grocery budget but that's it, and I usually go to Sam's once a month for those. I have it easy compared to my parents though. My dad got paid once a month, and there were 4 kids at home all the time, 5 when my sister came up during the summer. They used to have 3 grocery carts slap full of food, and my mom figured out that it took something like 18 boxes of cereal to last a month, each one with a date marked on it so we didnWe also hada freezer to keep extra bread and other things, and my mom also used to mix in powdered milk when the gallon was half-way gone. I never knew until I was grown, so she definitely blended it well.

I think I spend less at the store when [2008-11-18]
we eat out/order in. Of course, then our entertaining budget increases. But some things are cheaper to just order in. For example, pizzas -- I can get 2 large pepperoni pizzas from the local pizzeria for under $20. If I buy them in the store, I spend about $15 and then have to cook them and my kids don The frozen kind are also smaller. I just got groceries this past Friday and spent $200. I had an entire cart full. In addition to the coupons I had, I also had a 20% discount on everything (one of those reward plans for spending so much the previous 2 months). I got value packs of skinless/boneless chicken breasts - buy 1 get 1 free -- $15 packs of chicken, breakfast sausage on sale, ham steaks on sale, plus my 20% off all that. Overall, I think I spend somewhere around $150 a week on groceries. There are 5 of us -- me, my hubs, and 3 boys -- ages 6 to 11. What I notice that I spend more on are school lunches. It costs $2.00 a day per child and I don I $2/day x 3 kids = $6/day x 5 days/week = $30/week x 4 weeks/month = $120 for lunch. YIKES!!! I think I can do better than that if I pack them.

Bakes potato soup [2008-11-17]
I like to make baked potato soup. Bake 3 large potatoes or 4-5 small ones. Cut them in half, cool slightly, then scoop out the middle. While they are baking I takes some time to heat up some chicken stock with a bay leaf, garlic, black pepper, a little time. Sometimes I use boulion (sp?) if I donbake the potatoes in the microwave if you want). I find that kids love it if you call it cheese and bacon soup. lol Usually for the bacon, I don't cook a new package but instead when I cook bacon for breakfast, etc. I save 2 or 3 pieces in the freezer each time. Then when I want some for soup, green beans, or salads it is available.

Well it is best I think if you don't say...sm [2008-11-16]
anything to them since you are friends. The company needs to step in and tell them if you are an on-call employee you are not to work if the work is low. The company needs to reinforce this. I understand they want to make Christmas money, but the company needs to tell them full time and part timers come first.

Eeew. This just popped into my head [2008-11-15]
If this she/he can claim to be a man, then when are they going to do the first female organ transplant into a man who wishes to experience the pain of pregnancy without becoming a full blown woman? Just the reverse of what this she/hedid. It would probably take as long to change, but how many real men would think about it if they could make all this money? Can you imagine the confusion? I thinkcloning is just as bad. Weoriginal not a manufactured person.

My thirst is Sjogren's disease! sm [2008-11-15]
I am always, always and forever chronically thirsty, but I don't have the polyuria to go with it. I have dry eyes, dry nose (to a point where it is usually pretty full of scabs), dry mouth with caries at the gumline. I have gastroparesis and proctalgia fugax which often go with Sjogren's just like the rest of it. Dry skin and feeling like you are drying out from the inside out is part of it. I even get a nasty, clay-like sludgy feeling in my mouth and throat from my stomach being too dry to digest. It is misery and even better than a gallon of water a day doesn't fix the dry feeling, but it keeps my kidneys from shutting down from being dry. Lovely huh?

very displeased with 2 of my friends right now [2008-11-15]
We all work for the same company. Our employer offers three types of employment: Full-time, part-time and on-call. Well, work has been low and the on-call gals have been asked to halt production and allow those of us full and part-timers to meet our quota. They know I work full time, as I must, being the sole-provider for my family. They both have husbands and only work on-call for spending money. So, of course, I ran out of work today. Friend number one calls and tells me she I don I asked her why she was working, knowing work was low, and she stated to me that with the holidays coming up she needs a much larger paycheck this next time around. ARRGHH! I already talked to our supervisor about the two of them. I feel that since we are friends, I should not have to be the one to tell them that they are taking food off my plate. I I know there Thanks.

Blondie, have read your posts before sm.. [2008-11-15]
You sound like a very good person, very caring. I was in the same situation once with a neighbor's dog. He would go to Canada hunting and just leave his dog tied to a dog house in mid-winter in New England and I would take her into my home, feed her, keep her warm and all. This neighbor today I can say with full confidence was borderline-retarded without a doubt. I am so glad I did this. I even at one time went to the dog pound and claimed this dog who had gotten loose and said it was my own. I could not let this poor dog suffer because of its owner. All I can say is do what is in your heart, it may cost you a few dollars more but think of it is abandoned children and you are there for them. Take a good look at this guy and truly ask yourself is he is capable of the love and caring you have in your heart. I know times are tough, but perhaps you are the one who is meant to save these poor animals. Sounds like this guy is either not the sharpest tool in the shed or something else wrong with him. Does he have enough money for beer or etc., and not his dogs? Then he doesn't deserve them! Think hard about the dogs and what would happen to them if it were not for you. You are a very nice person. I hope you find an answer. As for your husband, only you can answer that question. I think he should at least stick up for you and address his dumb friend as to what his responsibility is in the situation. Good luck, Blondie, you are a sweetheart to put up with all this, and I am sure the dogs are in a better place with you. Do you have an SPCA or someone who could help with the food? Perhaps online you can find a way to make your own food suitable for dogs at a reasonable price. May God be with you. Perhaps you are meant to care for dogs in some way that would be beneficial to you in other ways. God bless you for caring.

Been there done that [2008-11-13]
If you haven't already, read books about Adult Children of Alcoholics. My dad was a serious alcoholic who managed to hold down 2 full time jobs. He was either coming home drunk in the middle of the night and waking up everyone fighting with my mother, or when he would have a day off, he was an awesome fun Dad. He never drank at home or in front of us. So it was very confusing. Fast forward many years, at 63 he was diagnosed with cirrhosis and bleeding ulcers and had an emergency subtotal gastrectomy because he almost died. From there on, he stopped drinking because he had to, not because he wanted too. He died less than 3 years later. He lived with me for the last 2 years and I took care of him, and we became very close. It didn't erase all the bad stuff, but I was at peace when he died. I would try to make amends with your Dad now and let go of the past, because to put it bluntly you are a big girl now and you can't be angry about your childhood forever. It is not healthy.

The only back-up plan is for us both to get an additional job each. [2008-11-13]
DH already has 3 jobs. I have 1 IC, and looking for more accounts. The only thing is that my job has to be at home because we cannot afford and do not want to put kids in daycare. So, it would mean my working 2 full time jobs, I suppose. I am up to it if I have to. THing is, there are jobs out there but that does not mean the work is there. So, if needed I will take third shift and sleep the 4 hours husband is home from his jobs. That way between us we'd have 6 jobs instead of the 4 we have now.

There are no jobs where I am sm [2008-11-13]
I had thought of working part-time in a mall to get the discount, do some Christmas shopping, get out to see people, only a few days here and there. Our newspaper used to have at least 3-4 full pages, 7-8 on the week-end, down to 1 column on weekdays, 2 on weekends. Most are heavy lifting jobs for men and/or must speak Spanish, especially if medical. So I buy extra at every sale, extra everything, use coupons, got 30% off from Kohlnice dress with atoy inside. The only thing is I am getting depressed from clutter, too much stuff all over but have to remind myself some have nothing. We do not go out to eat except perhaps soup in a sour bread bowl on special just every other week or at a Panera Bread just to say we went out, bought video movies for a dollar at church bazaars (all Disney) for grandkids, using our VCR which will be obsolete soon but can still watch movies on old TVCutting back in general, baking bread, baking cookies, really clipping and saving everything I can get my hands on. Walmart does not accept internet coupons, so check the newspaper. I do read labels on food from Walmart as some is from China.Joined a wholesale club but found it more expensive than most stores, so we can get our money back, refundin 3 months so they tell us. I really wish I had been more frugal when I made decent money at MT, I can now see I was wasteful and shame on me! I should know better, have been through recessions before. They do turn around and the only good thing is they give us a swift kick in the rear! Feel sorry for those who can barely make it, work is hard to come by in New England and a lot are losing their jobs, even teachers with over 20 years. No one knows when the next shoe will fall, even malls are failing. I am leaving all tags on gifts this year, usually cut them off, but with so many people returning things for the money, they said itand even though I get gift receipts, I want them to see where it came from so the store won't give them grief. Target is the worst for returns. So that's my story here in cold, sleeting today, NE.

But if I go shopping after eating, [2008-11-13]
I'm full, nothing sounds good, and I end up with no food!

To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction [2008-11-12]
It won't be making any difference. I tried a couple of techniques for my adults and very soon I came to realize they found the antidotes for them. If there are 10 sites telling how to monitor your kids, there are 1000 more telling how to escape it. Down the road you will be pushing your kids to visit those sites (full of porn banners & adult materials) and nothing else.

okay, I was looking for a certain cook [2008-11-12]
on PBS who was making an apple dessert in a cast iron skillet about a year or so ago, but I guess they are no longer showing him; an older white haired man with a full white mustache. Anyway, I remember him saying don and he likes granny smith, too. samcooks.com/relish/apples.htm

Holiday memories.... [2008-11-12]
My dad saying (when I was age 4 to 6) that there was an elf that would hop on his shoulder every morning when he got in the car to go to work and ask if I had been good the day before. I can remember waiting for him to get home and then excitedly asking him if he talked to the elf...ok, now I'm misty eyed! Waiting in the longest line to get Cabbage Patch Kids for my daughters when they first came out....lucky enough to get ones with decent enough names and birthdates close to my girls' birthdays. Making the dreaded yam/sweet potato casserole at Thanksgving and ALWAYS setting the marshmallow bag on the hot oven door, thus melting the plastic, nice touch. Realizing that I don't care if I have to pay full price, I do not shop the day after Thanksgiving any more!

Not an elf, but Rudolph [2008-11-12]
My mom would tell us that Rudolph peeked in the windows of the house to see how we were behaving. So I in turn told this to my kids. One time we were heading out in the early evening and my boys, about age 3 and 6 at the time, were duking it out in the back seat. I rounded a turn to see a huge buck with a full rack standing in the middle of the road. I stopped and said, Look, there's Rudolph and he saw you fighting! With that, the buck slowly walked off the road. You should have seen their faces.....

It was not me who defined these 3 points of intelligence, this is taken out of a study. I have no attitude. Why is is that one gets immediately insulted if one says something that is not readily accepted by the posters? We were talking about IQ scores and not about the complications that hinder people to take full advantage of their intelligence. There are so many excuses brought up if somebody is not able to take full advantage of one's intelligence. This is either a sickness of some sort or also a kind of stupidity. I disagree with the suggestion that the smarter people are the less happy they are. Why should intelligence make us unhappy? This borders on sickness. This should not be, then they should consult a psychologist or psychiatrist. I do not want to go into a deep discussion about this issue because I do not want to make myself the target of insults which is so common on this board in case people disagree with one's opinion. Why should I do that?

Also at your mom's age - is she taking a beta-blocker? sm [2008-11-11]
People with potential asthma can be triggered into full-blown asthma after URI, if they are being treated with a beta-blocker (for HTN, anxiety, whatever other condition). No comments regarding your kids but just wanted to remark about your mom.

forward to the holidays. I'm the one with the mega debt who confessed to her DH a month ago, etc. We will have his debts paid off in full in about 10 days. I still have quite a mess though. We sold back 2 weeks of his vacation time (lucky for us his work allows you to do this) and half of that is paying for Christmas, the rest is being banked in our savings account which needs restoking (used to have $5K in it but only $200 now). We are taking a night and going to the beach to see the lights (free hotel stay due to his travel points) and a nice dinner-- all of this is his idea too--, and he suggested I go up (with the kids of course) and spend New Years with my friends/family up in PA so I am surprised about that. He is going to try to come too for a day or two to have a late Christmas with my family as well. Things are all roses, but considering everything I am looking forward to seeing my dad and one of my brothers, the other is in England and his family is going there to spend Christmas with him in Ireland with his wife's family there. But DH is trying really hard, he even bought me a dozen roses on my birthday a couple days ago and a really nice card, I couldn't have been more surprised....normally I get nada, not even a card. Granted my daughter told him to get me flowers, but still, he went over the top. But I digress as usual....everyone just needs to stay within what they can afford, we are cutting back some of course, but I have a bit more wiggle room now that I have that vacation money coming. Do it every year and it is a lifesaver.

Genetic Disposition [2008-11-09]
I am sad that the attack happened regardless of the breed of dog, but I am not going to be narrow-mined at the same time & put all of the blame on the dogs. As far as genetic disposition, that goes back to researching the breeder where you buy your pitbull from. If you buy from a good reputable owner that has bred them from family pets then that is what you will get. I have owned PLENTY of dogs & the only one we had a problem with that tried to bite us was a Samoyed/Husky mix, explain that. We even rescued a full grown pitbull off of the side of the road that didn't know us at all. We knew we would be taking a chance that he may bite us not knowing us, but we have had him a year now & he is great. If they were all mean and vicious how were we able to get him and give him a home, explain that.

pitbull statistics [2008-11-09]
The statistics which appear to show a high rate of attacks due to alleged “pit bull-type dogs” are full of inaccuracy simply because any dog that can pass for a “pit bull” will be called a “pit bull” by the media. And yes, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are often referred to by the slang term “pit bull,” but were these the actual breeds responsible for the attacks? Probably not since a slew of other breeds of dog — like Presa Canarios, Cane Corsos, Spanish Alanos, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Bandogs, Dogues Brasileiros, Dogo Argentino, Guatemalan Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Boxers, Bull Mastiffs, Bull Terriers, English Bulldogs, and even Labradors, Rottweilers, Akitas, and Chow Chows — have also been labeled “pit bulls.” Statistics are inaccurate because they are not based on “reliable breed-specific population data” Still, it is a testament to the quality of the breed that even though many are unsocialized, tortured, and otherwise ill-used, very few are human-aggressive. I hesitate even to include abuse as a factor since even when they are abused most bullies are incredibly friendly and loving towards humans. You can thank over a hundred years of proper breeding for this trait. There is no scientific evidence that one breed of dog is more vicious than another.
