I just bought a grain mill and love it [2008-08-17]
http://www.crockettscorner.com/mill.html She also sells a DVD that shows other ways to prepare wheat seeds like in the crockpost. It's much cheaper than cereal off the shelf! I don't have an electric mixer but I hear good reviews about the electrolux http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/magic_mill_dlx_mixer.aspx I've heard this bread machine works with whole wheat but do not have one: http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/zojirushi_bread_makers.aspx

Amazing finale tonight [2008-08-08]
IWell I guess now you know what qualifies them to judge. Debbie Allens students were way too cute, and Nigel could sure move those taps. Loved seeing the older dancers. Dimitri is still a dream. I'd take dancing lessons from him any day.

I just bought 2 packs of 10 for $1 each at Walgreens. sm [2008-08-08]
If you have a Walgreens around you, check there. They have stretch book covers for $1 each, the 10 pack of mechanical pencils for $1 each. Rite-Aide has six 1-subject notebooks (70 pages each) for $0.96, that is $0.16 per notebook (copy book).

Who do you want to win? Winner announced tonight!! SM [2008-08-07]
There is no way I could make that decision. This season has just been amazing. I must say that Joshua is outstanding andjumps higher than I can believe. They are all so wonderful.

My daughter and I bought our laptops during the tax-free, sm [2008-07-30]

Anyone here have a hybrid vehicle? [2008-06-30]
Whatdo youthink of it?

We just bought a Prius and I will NEVER own anything but hybrid now! [2008-06-30]
We took our Prius from Philadelphia to Yellowstone Nat'l Park. Two weeks of driving, 5300+ miles on 10 fill ups of about 10 gallons each time. In fact, I filled up in Pittsburgh and am still driving around here at home on that tank of gas. Pretty much all of that trip was on interstate highways across the plains and up into the high mountains, and we still got close to or over 50 mpg. Our town mileage is even higher! It husband and 6 son are very comfortable driving this car. It's quiet, handles very well, and has lots of nifty gadgets for the base model, which is what we bought. The downside is that there is an 8-month wait for one in our area, and they just recently upped the price a few hundred dollars. But we love it, and found it to be great on the highway AND in town.

Just had to tell you that yesterday I bought the apple cider vinegar s/m [2008-06-12]
tablets for severe unrelenting hot flashes. I felt bad all day yesterday and was hoping it was not due to the pills. I only took two because of that. Went to bed early and today I have had a total of 2 hot flashes so far and it is 12 noon. I would have literally had dozens of terrible hot flashes by now. Thanks to all of you who shared your thoughts about ACV and for the dear poster who told me it was available in pill form. I honestly think this may be my answer. I feel like a new person and pray this continues. I can THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Just bought a hybrid tonight [2008-05-09]
Three people I know are in love with their Toyota Prius hybrids, and one of those people is my cousin who is an auto mechanic. One of these people bought a Prius the first year they were available and has put 200,000 miles on it without any major problem ever. With my hubby commuting 50 miles a day, we decided to give it a go and bought one tonight. No deals to be made, because people are waiting for the cars at this time But we thought the price was fair, and hope we can drive this car for a very long time. Ours won't arrive for another 5 weeks or so, but that's ok. I'm looking forward to those 40+ mpgs that my friends and family are getting with their Prius.

"I'm leaving my wife." I bought it once...never again. NM [2008-05-08]

what is something you have bought in the past you will NEVER [2008-05-06]
Mine is Little Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish. Cute concept but the berry, lemon and strawberry flavoried gummies somehow manage to taste like fruity flavored fish When I got them, my kids gagged with the first one and wouldn't even touch the second one for the recommended 2 a day. So guess who is choking down 2 of those suckers every day now?

I bought a new car a week ago... [2008-05-04]
If anyone cares. A brand new Kia Spectra. I got a great deal on it. They gave me a $2000 rebate so that meant no down payment. And they took off an additional $500 for applying for it on the internet. I love the car and it gets around 35 mpg. So that is my good news!

It's Monday...What's for dinner tonight folks? [2008-04-07]

Have some tilapia I bought for dinner - what is the best way to prepare it? (sm) [2008-03-17]
I was simply going to season and bake/broil, but I think husband will be less critical if he at least thinks he is getting some breading or something unhealthy on it.

Thanks for recipe. Will try it out tonight. nm [2008-03-17]

Be careful using it with a frozen casserole. I bought [2008-03-17]
the casserole. It said to bake it on a cookie sheet, so I pulled out my stone. The stone broke into 3 pieces during cooking, so I learned never to do that again. I have 2, one is black because it has been used so much, but I love them. I just don't put anything frozen solid on them anymore, including biscuits. I am probably paranoid, but after the first one I have broke like that, I feel it is just better safe than sorry.

from their web site. It is the best thing ever! It does a great job on the carpets and furniture. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can try it in my minivan. We have owned the store brand ones like Bissel and Dirt Devel, but they just don't do nearly as good of a job as the Rug Doctor. Ours came with huge supply of different cleaning fluids too. I love the thing!

I bought a flank steak and teriyakee marinate for the grill tonight. First time ever to do this. How long would you marinade the steak for?

homemade bread [2008-08-17]
Thanks for sharing your recipe. I lost my bread book in a flood here in Florida when there was 8 inches of water in my house and my recipes were on the bottom shelf of my cabinet (among other recipes) and have not made any bread since. My mother bought me an earthenware bowl that she paid a lot for to rise the dough which retains the temperature. I only have 3 loaf pans but will buy another. I bought a breadmaker machine but did not use it much. I used it for rye bread which is hard to knead because it is more coarse. My family loved my bread and I pretty much loved to have my hands in that dough. I know it is somewhat exhausting, but I find it almost therapeutic and stress reducing. I am going to try your recipe.

Homemade Bread [2008-08-16]
I'd like to start making my own bread. I can only tolerate easy recipes and not too time consuming. Is making your own bread easy, moderate or difficult? if it's easy, do you have any tried and true recipes? Should I buy a bread machine? What can you tell me about bread machines and their ability to pop out good tasting bread, also, with bread machines, do you have to use a pre bought packet or can you stick your own ingredients in there and bake?

deliveries [2008-08-16]
just for grins, I am reminded of 1995 when I bought a new truck (I had horses then and 4 kids in older junkers who always needed towing). One kid was in high school delivering pizzas and had taken my truck because his was on the blink. He heard one patron telling the wife as he left, no, I didn. And yes, they do pay for their own gas, I would think 3 or 4dollars would be fine.

Homemade bread [2008-08-16]
Well, I'm old-fashioned. I've never used a bread machine in my life. But I do make four loaves of bread at least every week and my family can't live without it (I say in all modesty). I've won blue ribbons at the County Fair for it. This is how I do it - This may seem very long and involved, but it's because I'm trying to describe it really thoroughly. Don't let the length of the instructions put you off. Do try it! The initial makinag and kneading of the dough only takes about twenty minutes - the rest is waiting time, mostly. I start with dry yeast, one package in a half a cup of hot tap water, stir it up and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. While it's sitting, I put three cups of hot water in a big mixing bowl with two teaspoons of salt, two tablespoons of sugar, and a quarter stick of margarine (or butter if you prefer). I heat that in the microwave for three minutes. Then I add two cups of flour to the ater/salt/sugar/ butter and stir it up. Youas a baby was how I was taught. Then I wash out the bowl and dry it with a clean dish towel, spray the inside with cooking spray, put the dough in, then thoroughly wet the towel (not dripping, but don't wring it out all the way either), and cover the bowel. That'll keep the dough from drying out while it's rising. Set in in a warm place to rise. In the summer I set it on my stove with the light on over it. In the winter, I'll put a pan of warm water in the oven on the bottom shelf and put the bowl on the top shelf. Let it rise to double its original size, about an hour. Can be more. Dough is very forgiving if you let it rise too much. Then fold it in on itself, recover it and let it rise again. I usually let it rise at least two or three times. The more often you let it rise, the lighter it will be. After the last rising, I spray my four loaf pans with cooking spray, then take the dough out, put in on the table and divide it into four parts with a large knife. Then, fold it in and under to form a loaf and put it in the loaf pan. Set that to rise to double. At about 45 minutes, start preheating the oven to 375 degrees. When the dough is the height you want (it will rise a little more in the oven), stick it in the oven for 30 minutes. It should be golden brown on top when it's done. Take the loaves out of the pans immediately and put them on a cooling rack so moisture doesn't accumulate under them. The family will attack the first loaf of bread immediately, be forewarned! The other three, when they are almost cool, put them in regular bread bags you have saved from store-bought bread. I freeze mine, because this has no preservatives and does get stale quickly. It's best eaten within a day or two of making it or thawing it. That's never a problem in my house. I hope you try it. It's a great feeling, getting all the accolades from your family and friends. PS - if you're lactose intolerant, like me, there are no milk products in it. I never eat store-bought bread anymore. It also makes the best toast in the world, and French toast?!? Wonderful!

Digital Camera [2008-08-12]
I have a digital camera that is only about 2 years old. I used it one day and it was fine. My husband used it the next day and the display does not show the picture or any information. I have not taken it into a camera shop yet but plan to as soon as I can get there. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before? Can it be fixed? Is it expensive? I hope I don It still works, I just cannot preview the pictures, take videos, see the battery life orhow many pictures I have taken, change settingsor anything because I can't see the display. Second to this note, if I do have to get a new one I am looking for suggestions. I currently have a Sony, so I would like to use the same memory cards (very expensive and I have 3). BUT, I do not like the delay on my current camera and would likea digitalwithout delay but had a hard time finding one when I bought this camera. Of course, small and compact size is also a feature that I like.

Well, [2008-08-11]
Right now I babysit a little girl about 3 days a week until her mother gets off work. I have held garage sales. I also recycle aluminum cans.My mom and her neighbor save them for me. I sell pecansfrom my pecan tree. There is notmuch income in those things but a little bit helps. H bought some steers with our tax returnand put them on his mother We might make a profit there. He inherited some farm equipment and he custom farms. In fact, last weekend he baled hay and earned $1000. It was a big patch though but not bad for 1 weekend. If you have hobbies you can profit off of that. I just recently picked up sewing. I am notvery good at it yet but I have made myself some clothes that I just love. They fit me much better than anything I found in the store. My aunt was a good seamstress and she used to make cheerleader outfits for the HS cheer squadfor extra money. I also know several people that make earnextra moneymaking bridesmaid dresses or Quinceañeras (sweet 15)which are popular around here. SIL is a photographer and she has made a profit photographing others. I also know people who have bought old furniture from garage sales and fixed them up and made a profit. There are a lot of people that claim mystery shopping earns them extra money. Also, some websites allow you to write articles online for extra income but I don

There is an honest way of doing it as well. [2008-08-11]
H went to a farm sale and they were practically giving away scrap iron. He bought me an exercise bike for $2 and they threw in a bunch of it in with that exercise bike. Someone came by and asked if they can have it for scrap and H gave it to them.A personcan find stuff on the side of the road like hub caps, car batteries, copper wire. Isaw a mattress laying out on the sideto the road as well. H has a lot of scrap in the backyard he needs to take down. Unfortunately, there are some that make this a dishonest business. It has been rumored that the city has had missing sewer caps. Someone took that down to the scrap yard. Gosh, what people won

We just got WII fit this past week [2008-08-11]
I) We bought this WII for my son last Christmas and I can honestly say it was money well spent. They have a blast with it and they aren't constantly sitting. We don't have the Guitar Hero but maybe that will be next on the list.

I posted this around the 4th of July...sm [2008-08-06]
I wrote this: >>> One of my dogs has a little bit of a problem with loud noises such as fireworks and thunderstorms. He doesn't get too terribly upset (likes to hide, refuses to go outside for awhile even after it's quieted down), but I happened to read an article about how using peppermint oil on the dog's paw pads helps to really calm them, so I'm going to give it a try this year. It has to be real peppermint oil (not the kind found in the grocery store in the baking section), so I went to a local health food store and bought a bottle. You put the oil on a cotton pad, then put some on each of the dog's paws. I did a Google search and found a lot of comments from people saying it worked for their dog. (Just type in 'thunderstorms peppermint oil.') >>> I can tell you, it worked! It lasted for about 3-4 hours. You might want to give it a try. You don't say how young your puppy is, but if he's really young, you might want to check w/your vet just to make sure it's safe to use on a puppy. There is also some sort of vest that is sold that wraps around the dog and makes them feel secure. I haven't tried that though. You also want to avoid unintentionally reinforcing the dog's fearful behavior by comforting/petting the dog too much when it's afraid. Just act like it's no big deal, and say positive things like 'You're okay, buddy!' and go on about your business. Also, I haven't looked at the links that the other poster gave you, but there is probably a lot of great info. there on Cesar Millan's (the Dog Whisperer) website. I love him!

Between a rock and a hard place - HELP! [2008-08-06]
Okay, back towards the end of last school year some mothers decided to have a coo at the elementary school and take over the PTO for this coming year from the ones that had been running it. Shortly after that, the now ex-pres moved in next to us. The neighbor across the street is now on the new PTO. Somehow, they didnoh you. Well, I let the principal know that I would and now am regretting it. I have a full-time job plus type part-time at night (switching to just weekends when school starts). My husband is gone during the week so that leaves me to take care of kids, homework, games and practices, etc. I get calls and emails all day long regarding PTO. I thought about just sticking it out for the school year (I do have the flexibility to be off or leave early, come in late from my full time job) because I really want to be more involved in the school since my child is going into the second grade. Well, the final straw was a few nights ago when a bunch of us parents were sitting in our driveways watching the kids playing. It wasn My husband went ballistic! We came in the house and he said that was uncalled for, we need to move, and that he SO, what do I do now? How doI gracefully back out but not get shunned from being up at the school and helping out with some activities? The other story with that neighbor across the street that has bugged me this week - everything my child gets (we are not frivilous by any means), she makes sure her kids get the same things, even down to the exact same pair and color or tennis shoes for school, clothes, bicycles and now, the yard ornaments that we have had in our yard, i see she has bought some and are now in her yard also. I cringe now when I see her but I hate to keep my child from playing in the front yard just because her kids are out there (same age). Any ideas on this too??? What a crappy week!!!

Kids and ghosts [2008-08-05]
My son was two when I divorced. At first we had to sleep together due to our living arrangements. When we got our own place it was his habit to sleep with me. He'd go to sleep in his own room and bed but when I'd wake up in the morning he'd be in my bed. This went on for a few years and then all of a sudden it stopped. He's now 23 and a wonderful adult. In regards to spirits, I have seen my grandfather (he's been gone 10 years). I was comforted by his presence. I literally felt his touch on my shoulder and I feel I caught sight of him as he faded away. On the other side of my family, my grandmother died in 1986. My cousin and her husband married shortly thereafter and bought her house from the estate. They had their first daughter a couple of years later. When she was old enough to talk she asked my cousin who the lady was in the rocking chair clicking. My grandmother had a rocking chair in the corner of the living room that she sat in nightly knitting and watching TV. It must have been her needles she heard clicking. There is absolutely no way my cousin's daughter could have known this.

I understand some parents don't supply stuff- sm [2008-08-03]
but what is wrong with regular pencils, a whole lot cheaper than mechanical. I would buy some extra of those no problem, but $21 for pencils is a bit too much. In theory the teacher keeps each kids supplies in their own box at our school, so the supplies really are for my kid and not others, they supply their own note paper, markers, pencils, folders, notebooks, crayons, etc. I am sure some things end up in a general grab box for everyone, like the pencils and construction paper. I just remember when I went to school, all we needed was a few pencils in grade school.....as we got older, folders and a notebook, pens and pencils. Now you need ever little thing. The big thing was back to school clothes not supplies. I cannot even buy my kids any new clothes as I am spending it all on supplies, so far $140 and I am not done, plus it would be $11 more if I bought all the required pencils.

Everyone should read his book, it's wonderful. sm [2008-07-26]

Collection Agency Tactics?? [2008-07-19]
Does anyone know who I should contact, or if I have anything to complain about regarding a collection agency out of Texas. I used to actually work for a collection agency 20+ years ago out of Florida, and we would NEVER have been able to say what these people have said to me via phone, let alone in a letter I just opened. Long story short, yes, I owe HSN $200+ for a computer I bought on a payment plan of $135 a month. Before I was done with payment #2, it broke, and thus began months and months of me sending this junk back and forth with Gateway. It was a lemon model, thus why it was offered for 5 payments on HSN. After I made payment #2 and Gateway had the computer for repairs more than we had it to use, I called HSN. In no uncertain words, the sales rep told me you bought it, you deal with it. There were lots of reviews at this point on HSN and all buyers were furious, as it was junk. HSN quickly removed the computer and reviews. So, yes, I have been lax in paying it, but it didnASSEMBLE AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORT WHICY WILL OR MAY INCLUDE...INFORMATION AS TO MY CHARACTER AND GENERAL REPUTATION... the caps and bold are their writing. It then goes on to say that I should send $$ immediately as they have NO DESIRE TO CAUSE ME EMBARASSMENT... Can they word things this way? I have never in all my life seen anything worded to this effect, as obviously, even though they use the word may, it is a direct insinuation to scare me that they are going to ruin my reputation and are questioning my character, and threatening embarassment. Seriously, has anyone ever seen this before? I don I wonder if HSN knows this agency is saying personal stuff like this? I know companies just farm out their old debts to agencies. Again, its a tough one for me to swallow, as the computer never lasted even halfway thru their 5 easy payment plan, but I have recognized the debt and am paying, albeit at $50 every 2 weeks. But this insulting letter was just the icing on the cake for me. Do you think its legal?

Anyone out there own a HAIER portable washer? - see questions [2008-07-16]
I just bought a Haier portable clothes washer (8.8 pound, top-load model), and a portable dryer too, with my economic stimulus check. Since I've always used laundrymat machines, I'm a little confused about a couple of things not mentioned in the owner's manual. 1 - Dumb question #1: Are you supposed to turn on the water supply at the sink first, and then the poweron button to start the machine, or do you first start the power, and then start the machine? 2 - Okay, here Where do you put the liquid laundry detergent? Theredetergent, but I Also, there is a little thing above that that says detergent dispenser on it. This is confusing, detergent on it, so I don (And although not a domestic goddess, I am quite mechanically-minded and had no trouble assembling the parts and hooking it up.) I also don or if you first add the detergent, then power it up. I REALLY don I donkill the poor thing its first day on the job!

I must be doing something right!! [2008-07-15]
My husband informed me tonight when he came home from work that we had run out of toilet paper upstairs and he went all the way downstairs, brought one roll upstairs and replaced it. What a lucky woman I am!! Only married eight years. Just think of what I have to look forward to!!

I second that. I love my hardwood floors (sm) [2008-07-10]
It just makes your house look spacious and clean.I live in Florida and all of my friends have the hardwood floors throughout their house. We have had to slowly replace the tile, so at times we had tile and hardwood and it did not look bad, but looks so much better with the same flooring throughout the house. Good luck with your decision. I just went out and bought the Shark Steamer, only used it once, but so far I like how well it keeps the floors clean.

Anyone do anything really "dumb" before [2008-07-10]
Am I the only one out there??? Have you ever seen the commercial for the paper towel where the kid turns on a blender and all the liquid inside goes all over the kitchen. - Yeppers, that was me today. I just bought a new blender and I was making a bluberry/strawberry smoothie (yes, that I took the cover off, thought I was lifting it off the base and my finger hit the frappe button. All over the place (white walls, white fridge, white counter tops, etc). Luckily it cleaned up with the help of Comet (minus my shirt I was wearing but no big deal on that (was old). Talk about feeling like a real dum-dum. Anyone else ever done anything so dumb so that I will not feel alone.

No, I'm totally thinking getting back into exercising - sm [2008-07-07]
- Mountain bikes are easier to ride and more balanced than other bikes. Wider tires, wider handlebars, more upright position. - It's not like shifting gears in a car. Nowadays they have smooth-shifting index shifters and just pedal, and push the button to whichever one you want. - Unless you live where it's absolutely, perfectly level, you will encounter at least SOME kind of a slope. To an unfit person, or anyone on a bike with not much gearing, even the slighest slope (or even riding upwind on level ground) can be daunting. More gears equals easier ride. - If a person REALLY doesnEasy Rider or (?), that do the shifting for you. All you do is pedal and steer. Still, I can think of nothing that will turn a person off to exercising and bike riding in the beginning like a heavy, clunky, one-speed bike. - Regarding trails, IRails-To-Trails paths which follow old railroad beds. Most are linear, level, and great places for beginners to ride. Quit being so judgemental about what was 100% meant as a helpful post. You might go out an learn something about bikes, too, before you go calling people nuts for trying to help.

Just lotion or cold cream or something like that (sm) [2008-07-06]
I would be afraid the baking soda would be too abrasive and he'd have mark from that. If you get most of it off tonight and the rest in the morning it shouldn't be that hard to get off.
