Is it just me or does the fuel surcharge for speeders sound like another way to raise taxes? nm [2008-07-13]

are your taxes and insurance in with [2008-07-07]
the house note? By the time you have to pay for these out of pocket, will you realize much difference; I just my thinking. DO NOT TOUCH THE 401K; you will be horribly taxed on it as income. Actually, you guys are not that bad off debt-wise, know it sounds charming, I love rock houses. If you have land, I just keep on keeping on. Good luck.

Me, myself and I and my taxes sm [2008-05-30]
mmm I had only my IC income and only Federal taxes to pay last year. I paid in $7000 and some. I don Raking it in? Hardly! I pay 30% of my taxable income in taxes and I can only take the standard deduction, plus what came out to about $2000 in office expenses last year. You add up $7K x 3, + 2007 standard deduction for a single person + $2000 and you got my income. I don't call that raking it in!

Would filing your taxes late affect your stimulus check? [2008-05-30]
We filed an extension, and then sent our return out about two weeks late. We are getting a refund, so it wasn It was just a complicated return and we were just procrastinators.

At least you own property to pay taxes on - [2008-05-29]
I don't have my own pot to p__s in or window to throw it out of. I was totally depending on that refund to help pay down my gas credit cards.

We got our check last week. We electronically filed our taxes [2008-05-12]
and check was a direct deposit. This will help us with our home improvements.

I did my taxes in February, no reason why $ shouldn't be here today [2008-05-09]

Taxes [2008-04-15]
Honey, I feel your pain. And, if at all possible you do need to get on top of your quarterlies. I failed to do that and now owe about $40,000. My husband and I called the IRS and they generally will work with you on a payment plan that you can afford, but unfortunately, interest and penalties contine to accrue. I think as long as they see you are making an effort they will work with you. I think if you make payments to the IRS you can claim that as a deduction for the next year Best of luck to you!!!

Churches should pay Taxes? [2008-04-03]
My question Do yall think Churches should pay Taxes? I see and hear a lot about some of these well to do Pastors driving MERCEDES and living in fine homes!I personally believe they should why are they exempt?

I would rather pay more in taxes than to have--sm [2008-02-19]
someone garnishee my wages for her insurance program that I may or may not want!! Besides, his idea of changing the way taxes are collected is much more fair than the way it is now. Is that all you have against him?? Gotta do better than that!

Apparently paying my Iowa taxes [2008-01-31]
Man, they've gone up. Dang it all to heck. Otherwise, I'll be using the difference by knocking out my small bills in anticipation of paying off our zillions of dollars worth of student loans in about 800 years.

You talk like the only ones involved with big taxes [2007-12-14]
My father got killed in an accident, left me his property, I sold and for upcoming year MY taxes on that ALONE over $13,000.00. I did not fuss, I did not oh woe me- just put that money in the bank to draw interest until tax time. Know I owe and have that set aside. That does not count all the other taxes DH and I pay for the year and I sound like a grinch? Sure don’t get that remark. I am as much into keeping all that I can but EVERYONE (unless on welfare) has to pay their share, until and if they change the laws. I would be glad for any bonus he or I either one got but not happening here, so where does grinch come in?

I am close to retirement age and got property taxes [2007-10-04]
just a few days ago, about $2,250.00- I called and asked if I got anything off when I reached another age, say 70 or so and was told in 2009 I will have reached the golden age of 65 and my taxes would be only about $800.00 per year! Good Golly Miss Molly, talk about good news! The school tax break comes through then for me. There are some good things that come with aging and this is one!

I agree wth what you said about taxes [2007-09-28]
I loved what that professor said on the show about Hurricaine Katrina. Of course we didn We just needed to help them in a time of natural disaster, and the professor pointed out that if a woman gets breast cancer that IS a natural disaster to her. I don't think she should have a better chance for survival if she is a rich American versus a poor or middle-class American. If we can afford thevery expensive war we have been in for the last 5 years I think we can afford better healthcare for US citizens. I feel like although it is important to be safe from terrorists, the most likely threat in many of our lives isn I think it is a disease that will cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills that we may or may not be able to pay. I think many Americans die each year because they cannot afford the lifesaving treatment they need to save their own lives, and that is tragedy in my book.

Property taxes...oh my goodnes!! [2007-08-16]
Our area and I think much of the state were being reassessed this year. The first tip was when my husband read in the paper that our particular county did an outstanding job with their assessment and should be an example for the rest of the state. My husband called today to see when we would could be expecting our tax bill and was told they could give us the amount, did he want them too. He told them he really wasn OK - this marvelous job that our county did was -------- a 60% increase. Can you believe it????? And we do not live in an extravagent area at all! We have to come up with an extra $1900 in three months! Piece of cake! I fear America is in for tough days ahead. Our society in general cannot keep up with the increases that we see on every hand. Milk - Close to $4 a gallon here. Gas price increases - and we live 30 miles away from anything, work, church, shopping. Cheese - $7 for a pound of cheese! How can we continue on this pathway when our incomes do not increase at the same rate? Can Another issue along the same line - I If I was on Welfare, I would have no problem running to the eye doctor because I desparately need my lenses changed in my glasses which are at least three years old. My son needs to go to the doctor for an infected, ingrown toenail - no money so he endures it. My daughter needs a graft on the gum line of her teeth where here gumline is beginning to expose the root of the tooth - again no money for that so it won I could go on and on - but I Yes - I have insurance that we would be covered for a major medical expense, cancer, etc - but there is$3000 deductible so none of these smaller things are covered. OK - I Thanks for the listening ear and the wonderful sounding board that you all are!!! When you are sinking in this deep pit - it hard to remember and to comprehend that MY GOD SHALL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEEDS ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES IN GLORY. I I'm anxious to see how he supplies that need.

With the prices of homes and property taxes today, just about everyone is house poor. [2007-06-16]
It's so sad when you can't go out to dinner often, buy nice expensive things for yourself *just because*, go on lots of trips, go to sports things, see shows/concerts, etc., all because you own a house. I'd truly rather rent and ENJOY my life! :)

I do our taxes myself [2007-06-16]

Also, I really donhuge pot heads out there robbing banks for their next J to roll. I Why not? Booze is allowed and drunk drivers kill innocent people every day. There are crosses along the road in my state to prove it. I say legalize it and save the jail for the real criminals. I But definitely decriminilizing is better than jamming the jails up and using our taxes to pay for 3 hots and a cot for a pothead...

Anyone ever use a debt settlement company - sm [2008-11-03]
like DebtAmerica or something like that, one that eliminates 30% or more of your balance owed, consolidates it and gets each cc to settle on an agreed amount, etc. I am thinking of going that route instead of CCCS company which is just a DMP (consolidates it but you still pay back every penny and interest). Either way you have a big black mark on your credit. I owe a substantial amount and this way I can probably be debt-free in 3-4 years instead of 8 years.I know they charge a fee, and you have to pay taxes on the settled amount but it will be a lot cheaper for me in the long run and I can afford it a lot better. So if anyone has gone this route, please give me your input and who you used and if you were happy with their service, etc. TIA!

I claim all. [2008-10-21]
I have 2 large bags to take in right now but haven't because I need to itemize a list first. It really helps during tax time. A donation is a donation whether you claim it on your taxes or not.

Gays have been trying to get rights [2008-10-16]
since the 1950's. Gays only want to be treated and have the same rights as heterosexuals. You have such hatred for gays that I feel sorry for you but then again, it is fear and ignorance that people such as yourself feel this way. There is a high suicide rate of gay children because of the bullying. We are no different than you and I can assure you we do not shove any type of agenda down your throats. I am sure you are the type that if your son or daughter came out to you, you would disown them. Now you tell me what kind of a parent is that? We pay our bills, taxes, own houses, etc., so what is so different from you and from me in daily living? So sad there are still homophobes this day and age.

what is CCCS [2008-10-15]
Hi, I am always afraid of those ads I always hear on the radio about lowering your debt by 70%. never believable. Will you tell me how it goes with them? I am about 12K in debt, and about 9K of it is from back taxes owed which was devastating when I learned that... but thanks to being a self employed transcriptionist... I know take 30% of EVERY paycheck out to taxes. and WOW, my world came crashing down this year when i saw how much i really made... it's pathetic for the hard work i put in and now im drowning in debt at the age of 27 and very very upset about it. I can't even pay down the cards because i can barely pay my bills on this measly salary!

Wait it out.. [2008-10-01]
Not only that, but to cash it out you have a penalty...so say you cash out $5,000...after penalties and all that, you will get a bit over $3,000 I believe. Just know if you cash it out, you will have to claim it as income on your taxes and pay a really high tax amount on it.....

hold on tight - sm [2008-10-01]
You need not to panic. The stock market is going to have highs and lows of varying degrees. If you bail out now you will have lost money, plus all the taxes you will pay. Hang on!!

Always negotiate and do your homework before hand! [2008-08-31]
If you do some good internet research you can find out what the dealer actually pays for the car before their mark ups. I bought a new car several years ago and took this information with me. It was about $3000 less than sticker price and I only paid a couple hundred over this base price AND they went to another state to get the car that I wanted because I didn't want to wait for one from the factory. They will push you hard so be ready to stand your ground. Also, ask them to throw in license fees, plates, taxes, etc. in the price. Many places will do this if you finance through them and some will give you a gas card for $50, free oil changes, and what not if you ask at the end. Just remember, the worst they can say is no. You will likely never see this person again. I would recommend using your own bank for financing. If you use theirs I feel they use that to their advantage and finance you the sticker price and make it more difficult to bargain.

it's about 2 miles from the beach [2008-08-29]
here on the West Coast of Michigan in Muskegon. Bought the house from a man who was a nut and who had bought it in foreclosure for 17K. Huge yard, 100 x 100 feet, all fenced. Two bedrooms, one bath, just over 800 square feet (pretty small). All new siding, all new triple-pane windows, new furnace, new fridge, new hot water heater, new stove (found the receipt, $1700 for the set), and a totally re-done kitchen. Itlittle house in the hood. Taxes are about $900 a year. The only repairs we needed to make were to the plumbing, of which there was none, and I mean none. So, my nephew and I spent just over $200 and learned how to plumb -- all connected and flowing, PVC is my new best friend. There I take my child to school of choice out of district, cuz I wanted him to go to school where I went; it Gotta love it, good enough for now.

Carbon Credits [2008-08-28]
Mark this down somewhere for an I told ya so later. Carbon credits = a new/another way to tax us. Trust me. Think about it! I like Glenn Beck Carbon ONsets! I like to recycle and respect the the air, etc, but no politician will ever force this crap down my throat. It I don I also think cig taxes are way too high. They keep raising those, and where did it get education? Why is it they still run out of $ all the time? Picture an empty sive!

Funny, the majority of reports I type [2008-08-01]
Sure are a bunch of them being born with congenital abnormalities that require a lot of surgery and long stays in intensive care! But of course, letbirth! Glad to knowMY smoking and eating iscausing the crisis(although I pay MY taxes and health care premiums), not free health care to thousands of new illegal aliens every day!

NO WAY do I want universal healthcare!! [2008-07-30]
My boyfriend is Canadian and the taxes to pay for their healthcare are REALLY high!! I just got back from a 2 week trip up there and just eating out the tax rate was 15%!! Their income tax rate is even higher! I have an individual health plan that is as good as the one I had through my former employer and pay $109/month, which costs me a lot less than it would if I had to pay the extra taxes to help fund this retarded universal healthcare!!

ABSOLUTELY!! [2008-07-30]
I posted above about my Canadian boyfriend. The taxes to pay for their universal/provincial healthcare are outrageous!!

Agree with poster above. DO NOT take $ out of 401K...sm [2008-07-07]
>> My H wants to take 15k out of his 401k and be done with it. He says we are still young and we can still make it up. >> I was watching Suze Orman's show recently, and she had someone who wanted to do this. The woman was in her early 30s and wanted to take money out of her 401K to pay off $22,000 in cc debt, just to be rid of it. Suze said NO, and here's why - taking money out of a 401K now, instead of at retirement, means you'll have to pay penalties (state and federal) plus taxes which will equal about 35%. So in order to end up with $22,000 (to pay off her cc debt), she would actually need to take out about $35,000 from the 401K! So it would cost her $13,000 to pay off that $22,000. Not worth it. And if that isno) Suze said we need to stop looking at our 401Ks like their our piggy banks/savings accounts. They're for us to live on in *retirement.*

You have several issues here sm [2008-07-04]
First, mortgages are no longer a wise investment. The general trend is towards home values going down, not up. You could well end up 10 years from now owing more than you can sell the house for. I have had this happen to me. You have GOT to live within your means. If your wife is overspending, she needs help. Yes, overspending is a pathology! Downsizing even further is probably your best solution, after your wife has addressed her issues with spending more than you have. Being house poor is a fool's journey into madness, especially because with gas prices continuing to rise, as food may be a real luxury soon. I have downsized twice in the last 5 years, in part because my family grew up and left home, and the last time because it made economic sense. I live in an older trailer house, but it is lovely inside...warm and comfortable. Ashamed of it? NO WAY it is paid for IN FULL and MINE. It was a wise move. I am now able (and motivated) to save about 25% of my income after taxes, sometimes more and I am looking at ways to cut corners so I can save even more. I am worried about a second Great Depression in this country, and I am not alone in my thinking. LIVE SMALL and get your wife on the same page.

need some advice [2008-07-03]
Okay, what would you do? I have a wife who is on disability and will not be going back to work. At the time she was seriously injured I had a very good job and we were living the good life. At the same time she got hurt, I lost my very good job and ended up taking a huge paycut when I finally found a job. I am now back at a decent salary but of course, she is not. Anyway, fast forward to the now - we filed bankruptcy, sold our home and bought a smaller house so that we could have a manageable debt load, start saving money for our future , and still enjoy life in the here and now. However, none of that has happened. If we have $10 left after paying the bills, then that $10 is going to be spent. No savings yet, nothing paid off in advance because we (meaning she) are still blowing the money on unnecessary items. So here is my dilemma - we have the opportunity to take our smaller home and trade it in on a bigger home (along with the bigger mortgage, higher taxes, higher insurance premiums, etc.) and I cannot decide what to do. I really do not want to face that large house payment once again, but at the same time, I figure since we are not saving it anyway, it might as well go into something that might benefit us some day instead of all the unnecessary stuff we are spending it on now. Can I get some advice (and not get rid of her, that is not an option!)?

Children in Texas finally reunited [2008-06-03]
I waspleased to hear the children from the Texas ranch reuinited with their parents. I could not figure out how the state could come in and remove the children without solid evidence of abuse. They said they received an anonymous call from some girl who claimed she was an under aged bride? However through the whole episode never once did this so called girl come forward. I believe this was all a smoke screen so they could go in and disrupt this religious group. They were not doing anything wrong. They were living in the ways they believe is correct, just like any other baptist, catholic, or any other religion lives. If it has to do with taxes, health care or whatever that should be settled in court, not yank their children away from them. I have no doubts that if it was a baptist or one of their religious groups that they belong to none of this would have happened. I am just pleased the children are finally reunited with their parents and it sounds like they are reaching some agreements to make sure the children will be safe if there is anything harmful going on. Makes me even more glad I donripped away from me without a legalreason, but that's just me.

Do a little research on the income levels where you get double screwed on taxes - it You lose your deductions (I donstimulus checks they send out. Our income may be higher than some, but we end up losing a whole lot because of that difference in income. And I was not kicking her when she was down I was just saying I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who gets 0 refund when we have to pay out the wazoo.

Could be worse... [2008-05-29]
We had to pay over 3k in taxes between fed and state this year, over 3k in property taxes, and we don't get the stimulus check. I'm trying to feel sorry for you, really I am...

in taxes and didn't qualify for stimulus check (because you make too much?), ya'll must be rakin' it in!! Don't think you deserve much sympathy either, right? I know you we're asking for it, but seems a little harsh to kick someone when they're down...

I have economized and it has paid off sm [2008-05-13]
I live in a mobile home I bought excessively used. It is fully paid for. My car is 1996 and while it has 123K for mileage, it is still running just fine and I am told will go to 200K. It is paid for. I own a lovely piano, paid for. Clothing I either make or buy on the sale tables from Walmart. I especially like that most of my tops only cost me $3 or $5. I take good care of my clothing and much of it I have had for several years. Since I have chosen carefully I like what I have. Same for shoes. Same for what little costume jewelry I have. Same for my budget bedding. I buy household stuff second hand because I like certain tacky nick nacks from the 1950s. I even shop for the lowest prices at second hand shops. Now, I have not had a vacation in 13 years, it is true. I am just now getting used to having to take 2 full days off every week and managing those 2 days without sitting down to work is hard. I do, however, have a lovely home and no debt. I only work one job and I do pretty well ($40K a year). I am able to have enough taxes withheld not to worry about it. I have insurance too. After that, I can pay my bills and I manage to put back about $500 to $700 a month, depending on my line counts. I have no idea what I am saving for right now, but it feels good to watch the numbers climb. I literally put every fourth paycheck in the savings account. I DO eat what I want when I want. I have also stock piled canned foods because of food prices. I buy lost leaders at the grocery store for the most part. If it has a store special tag on it, I am going to choose it over something else. I am at a point where I don There is no place close I I am an avid sale and clearance shopper, and while I am not longer at the point in my life where this is a necessity, it is so ingrained (did I spell that right?) that I can Some people may get off on buying an expensive item, but I get my thrills out of seeing how little I can spend to get what I want. Example is a flat pack entertainment center I wanted. Original price was $120 and I got it for $32. Nothing wrong with it and it was easy to put together, just clearing out for new styles. I had wanted one for a year before I bought this one, but found that price and jumped on it with great joy. Since I know perfectly well that working harder and longer is not really an option, I chose to cut my spending and now I am really happy.

more stimulus news . . . [2008-05-12]
I just found out that if you had you taxes done by a financial institution like HR Block and you chose to have their fee taken from your refund then you receive your stimulus by mailed check, so you should check the mailing schedule, not direct deposit

Info on stimulus payment... [2008-05-09]
I looked on irs.gov and looked under where is my stimulus payment. It said if you did not send you taxes off until April 15 or close to April 15 you taxes weren't late but the taxes weren't processed by April 15. So you will not get your payment on that date on the schedule. It can be up to 6 weeks later. I mailed mine on April 15 so that is why I didn't get it today.

How many times does this have [2008-05-08]
First, you have to find out if you qualify. Then, look online on the IRS website to find the schedule according to your SS#. Of course, if you didn't use direct deposit for your taxes to begin with, they will send you out a check and those won't be sent out until later. It is not a crock - we got ours on time, according to the schedule!
