I was on a high protein, low carb diet some years ago and [2008-08-18]
actually felt great. I lost 27 pounds and looked better than I had in many years. I keep wanting to discipline myself enough to do that again. As far as low carb, I cut out almostall breads, cereal, pasta, etc., but ate fruit (which I think is high in carbs) and ate a lot of nuts. I really felt very good and my self esteem was so much better than now. Good luck to you!

I was on this several years ago, had no [2008-08-18]

Of course it will come back if... [2008-08-18]
you go back to eating lots of bread, potatoes, and other high-carb foods. It is a way of living, not just a diet. I have been on it for over a year now and have lost over 20 pounds. I was not overweight, just needed to lose those last few pounds. I have my cheat days where I will eat whatever I want, maybe once or twice a week. If you love steaks and can stay away from the french fries, then it is a fairly easy diet. I don't count my carbs anymore, I just stay away from those high-carb foods and if I notice my weight going up, I will go back on induction for a few days and it comes right off. To the original poster, the ketosis will pass. I had dizziness and shortness of breath but it passed. If you are concerned, I would consult a doctor though. If you have certain medical problems it might end up hurting you.

I strictly followed this plan for a few years - [2008-08-18]
I alsohad some of the issues you are having. Make sure you are drinking LOTS (and then some more) of water (not soda, tea, etc., and counting that as water). You may also want to begin watching your fat content if you are not already. I am now where I follow a mostly chicken for protein eating plan, no refined foods or sugar, and tons of veggies. I only had 20 pounds to lose originally and did it more because I was literally addicted to carbs and knew I could feel better, which I do now. Best wishes for your continued success!

I made my own bread for years sm [2008-08-17]
I have celiac disease, so no more, but the kids loved it. I have had a bread machine, but they are not friendly in higher altitudes, so I gave it away. I baked by hand and yes, I was an MT at the time. I used to make 6 to 10 loaves at a time, which is a lot of kneading. I found that kneading it as I did clay when I was throwing on a pottery wheel worked best for my hands. It is a spiral kneading technique, hard to explain. I sit on the floor and knead in a very large steel bowl. The angle of my wrists and hands is much better that way. Anyway, my favorite bread recipes come out of the original Laurel's Kitchen. I don't like the new anniversary edition and I don't like their bread book. You'd need to look in the library for this, but it is worth it. While I don't own one (have not found one) I understand that the best and easiest way to knead bread is a bread bucket. You can buy them from a couple of places on line that cater to Amish people. It looks sorta like an old-fashioned ice cream bucket, but you put bread in the bucket and crank. I stand by something called Hungarian High-Altitude flour. I have used it at high altitude and low altitude, it is equally good. If you can, get bulk yeast from a health food store because those packets are pricey and not as fresh as you need for premium bread. Made by hand, the best bread comes from the best sponge beforehand. Feel free to email me about anything I have said.

He was in a lot of pain. Had to keep them covered at all times because we have small children who have not chickenpox yet. He took Vicodin like they were candy. He couldn He has them front and back on the same side. They usually do not cross over. If you work with food, make sure you wear gloves to avoid contamination, especially if you are cooking for more than yourself. Good luck. I hope they heal quickly and that you have minimal pain. I will keep you in my prayers.

My vet said that parvo can live in your soil for up to 7 years. [2008-08-01]
Also that puppies have a lot of the antibodies in their system from their mothers for a couple of months after birth and that if the parvo immunization is given to early, it can be ineffective because of that. Also, fleas can spread parvo as well, which my new puppy did get fleas right before she got sick. I try to treat fleas quickly, but I guess I may not have caught them quick enough.

I love to read, too, and just started back reading. [2008-07-31]
I've read Savannah Breeze by Mary Kay Andrews. This was given to me by my daughter. I could not put it down. Her other books are Blue Christmas, Hissy Fit, Little Bitty Lies, and Savannah Blues. I plan to read Savannah Blues next.

I've seen videos where some people cut a side-entry hole in a big storage bin like you get at Walmart, and fill it with litter. (Can be covered, or not, though many cats don't like covered boxes because it intensifies the odor for them.) The high walls, with the only low spot being the entry, keep most of the litter in if they're real diggers & flingers!

I have had my phone number for 6+ years. [2008-07-21]
When I first received it I kept receiving calls from agencies for a specific person. I told them this was not their number, etc., and had no idea who this person was. After a while, they stopped calling; but now after 6 years I am getting them again for new debts, so this person is using my number (which may have been their old one) still. I just tell them I have had this number xxx years and this person repeatedly uses it for their info and eventually they quit calling. I did have to speak with a manager once, and after that they stopped.

Your daughter was me 4 years ago... [2008-07-17]
I am only 20 years ago and your daughter sounds exactly like me 4 years ago... I agree with the above-mentioned posters that you need to get dad involved. I too knew that I could manipulate my mom but was very afraid of what my father would do. It She's just saying that to manipulate you. AS FOR THE DRINKING: Do not allow this to be acceptable behavior. I drank as a 16-year-old and my parents tried to ground me, keep me home, etc. and I still went out and did it... guess what, I got a DUI because kids do not use smart judgement when drunk. I guarantee there is no safe ride because she is with other kids who are drinking, and she will never call you for a ride. My parents were very against teenage drinking and I got into big trouble, I can JMO The best thing that happened to me was the DUI because I stayed home for 3 months (had no license) and I learned that I did not have to go out every night, that I really wasn After that, I didn Maybe the best thing to do is have her stay home for month, only let her go out during day or for a short amount of time and then after that month allow her to go out once a week until she comes home drunk, past curfew or you found out that she was somewhere she was not suppose to be and then have her stay home for two months, then let her go out again until she abuses it, etc. Eventually, she will either get into trouble and she'll learn that way or she'll learn that she does not need to be out all the time. Oh, as for her swearing she isn My friend in high school was valedictorian, honor student, everyone thought she was so perfect and even she had sex in high school. My sister is younger than I am, her friends are your daughter's age, and they were almost all sexually active by 15, sad huh :( Good luck to you. I promise it will get better. My father and I had the worst relationship when I was 16 and now we get along great… there is hope for you and your daughter!

the scar. I was making iced tea the old fashioned way where you boil4 quartsof water on the stove, add tea bags, and let sit for a couple hours. Well, I went to turn off the boiling water, tripped over my 20-pound cat, hit the handle of the pan and the 4 quarts of boiling water went all over my leg (missing the cat of course)...thankfully it was just water so it didn We lived in a 2 story house, and the ask a nurse person told me to get in the tub with cool water to stop the burning...ever try to hop up stairs on 1 leg?!! Ended up with 2nd degree burns on thigh. OUCH. Needless to say, I have one of those new iced tea makers that uses cold water to make the tea!!!

No, I'm totally thinking getting back into exercising - sm [2008-07-07]
- Mountain bikes are easier to ride and more balanced than other bikes. Wider tires, wider handlebars, more upright position. - It's not like shifting gears in a car. Nowadays they have smooth-shifting index shifters and just pedal, and push the button to whichever one you want. - Unless you live where it's absolutely, perfectly level, you will encounter at least SOME kind of a slope. To an unfit person, or anyone on a bike with not much gearing, even the slighest slope (or even riding upwind on level ground) can be daunting. More gears equals easier ride. - If a person REALLY doesnEasy Rider or (?), that do the shifting for you. All you do is pedal and steer. Still, I can think of nothing that will turn a person off to exercising and bike riding in the beginning like a heavy, clunky, one-speed bike. - Regarding trails, IRails-To-Trails paths which follow old railroad beds. Most are linear, level, and great places for beginners to ride. Quit being so judgemental about what was 100% meant as a helpful post. You might go out an learn something about bikes, too, before you go calling people nuts for trying to help.

Your daughter is headed down the wrong path. If she Apparently, both of these new habits fit and she The fact that she says she feels relieved not having to hide it anymore is a sure sign she has no intention of quitting. I strongly urge you to discipline her. Children need discipline. She may hate you for it now, but your job is to be her mother, not her friend. Both of these habits carry dire consequence over the long-term (which I Yes, I tried alcohol and cigarettes when I was 16 (no drugs) but only a couple of times. To this day, I still don When my mom/dad found out what I was doing, I was severely disciplined - grounded, spanked (yes I said spanked at 16), and was stripped of any privileges. This definitely deterred me from participating in these things after I was allowed to resume a normal life. This may sound harsh, but I I intend to do the same with my children. I think that's the problem with a lot of today's youth -- they're parents are too worried about being their friend, instead of doing their job as a parent.

Alcohol...... [2008-08-20]
I personally don't drink with every meal but I do have wine now and then. A girlfriend of mine and her husband have a glass or two of wine just about every night with dinner and have for years, but I wouldn't say they have a problem. I suppose you need to ask yourself if you didn't have it, would it stay on your mind until you had it.??

alcohol [2008-08-20]
I think 1-2 drinks a day is absolutely fine. It is relaxing, and I usually do the same. My mom has done it for years, has a glass of wine at lunch and 1 or 2 in the evening and she is well into her 80s and in perfect health! Enjoy yourself and ignore your roommate.

like calorieking.com It focuses on the nutrition as well as weight loss. but you don if you like it, subscription is $55/yr. and their site has LOTS of info, recipes, forums, etc. i did that the first year and learned alot; didn't work at it consistently and lost 15 lbs still. now i am just doing the food/exercise journal with their best little calorie book, for way less $ and that is working for me. but rather than 'diet' (i hate that word!)you want to make changes that are something you can live with, permanently.

Low carb is not a "fad diet," but sm [2008-08-19]
rather a way of life. Once you try it, you The energy that comes from eliminating the processed carbs is amazing. You sleep better, feel better, look better. It The weight gain comes if you start adding in all the processed carbs again, which shows you exactly how bad they really are for you. One can say the same thing about your diet suggestion. If one stops counting the calories and goes back to eating as they did prior, the weight will come back. Low carb teaches you to eat to fuel your body. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Need some advice about possible animal abuse sm (this is long) [2008-08-19]
my son rode school bus home with afriend to the friendhouse last friday (i had never been to their house, but his friend has been here once and i these people some like really nice people, very religious. i went to pick up my son friday evening and was a little shocked. had a weird vibe about the dad right off the bat. i dontheir house was ok, but i felt dirty when i left. he has a couple of dogs, one he says he doesn seems very lovable) and another dog that has puppies and he bragged listened to him very well. when i was getting ready to leave, this momma dog comes around to the front and seemed extremely scared, especially when he was by her. he was trying to show me how good his dog listened to him. but she was putting her head down, slouching down like he it made me feel so uncomfortable. i so the next day my son goes back for a b-day party. on the way to their house, my son tells me that the dad kicked the momma dog because she was eating the cat (the cat is really skinny too). when i got to the house i was able to get a better look at this dog because it was daylight and the poor thing looks so unhappy and her rear end area looks like her hair is coming off, i don i just felt so helpless for this dog. i called my vet office and asked them who can i call if i suspect animal abuse (we don i but the look on the dog oh, another thing, when i was leaving there friday evening i said something about keeping the kittens (yes, they have kittens too) away so i don so my question is do i get a hold of the police and tell them this???? i just want the dogs taken away. i want to be anonymous. i don the dad told me that this is the third litter of puppies for this momma dog since last november, and if he finds out who the daddy is ........ well i thought to myself, why don i was furious! i thought about writing a letter to the police station. what do you all think? thanks

Yes AND no. [2008-08-19]
I really don't believe the legal drinking age to go back to 18, however, if the legal drinking age is 21 then that should be the minimum age for joining our military. If an 18 year old is not mature enough to handle some beer, then they aren't mature enough to go to war. If they are old enough for war, then they're old enough for a beer too.

Lower it - 21 is too high [2008-08-19]
1. Three years is not a huge difference. 2. Most kids are drinking earlier than 21 anyway and nobody is enforcing the law when they get caught drinking under age. 3. It was 18 when I was 18 and there was not a high incidence of drunk driving or whatever reason they have for a drinking age. 4. Germany there is no drinking age and they do not have a high rate of drunk drivers (they have one of the lowest rates of any country). 5. If they are not going to lower the drinking age they should then raise the age of joining the military. Someone tell me that it makes sense that they can't drink til their 21, but at 18 years old in the military they are given guns and can use them. Some kids will be responsible and some kids won't. I know a lot of people who are in their 20s and 30s and older who are very irresponsible when it comes to drinking - btw, I am 48 years old, not 18, 19, or 20 (and just want the age lowered) :-)

Life was fun up until about age 8, [2008-08-17]
and then it started getting more complicated. From those early years I remember wonderful summer nights in Wisconsin with the windows open and cool breezes coming in, the June bugs hitting the screens, summer pajamas. I remember riding bikes and pretending they were horses. I remember shopping for fall clothes when we were lucky enough to get some instead of having them all hand-made from ugly Jiffy patterns. I remember the WI State Fair and winning 3rd and then 2nd prize in the twin contest there. I remember vacationing in cottages in Vermont when I was 4. I remember climbing our maple trees and being about 50 feet high and that was a normal thing to do. I remember my first kiss from a boy when I was 3 and he was 2. He tried to talk me into walking down the sidewalk to watch a store being constructed and I had to explain my mom wouldn't let me do that. From later years I remember good times camping with the girlscouts and the time we found a secret place to go near our house where there was a grove of sumacs you could sit under to get away from the world.

who make these places put out tip jars on the counter when you go and pick up your food. I was a waitress for 13 years, so I know what it is like to live on tips, but why would you tip someone who is already being paid to do their job and you had to pick it up, unbelievable. Andy Rooney did a segment on these so called tip jars, and basically said they were made for suckas.

A couple ideas. [2008-08-16]
Here's a couple ideas... First, if you have a hobby where you make things that can be fun. Imoney making part. I've made lots of table runners, bags, lap quilts, and other little things here and there for family and freinds. They all say I should go into business but I don't feel I'm that good yet, plus the expense to buy the supplies to make the projects would cut into any profit made. Another way to go which my mom (she got me into quilting) told me about is to purchase a quilting machine. They cost about $6K, but people charge $25/hour to have the quilts quilted (this is for large quilts like queen and king size and anything too big for your sewing machine). One of my freinds did a king size quilt for me and it took her 4 hours. Second idea and this could really pay off is this. If you have a digital camera or scanner there are tons of ideas, most of which I have entertained and am still looking at this (just get caught up MTget into it). Anyway...with the digital camera you can take photos of people possesions for insurance purposes. I read on a website quite awhile ago that some people were looking for someone to take pics of their possesions so they would have a record of them for insurance purposes. Or another idea is if you love to take pics of anything and everything we have been looking at stock photography. If people like the pic and want to buy it you would get royalties. Another idea which I have started doing (not to make money though), but if people have slides or photos they want scanned in for whatever reason. I also have photoshop and have been restoring old worn out photos. I've also been scanning in slides that my DH's grandfather took of my DH and his siblings when they were growing up, and then more slides when they came to Germany to visit us. There are literally over 1000 slides for me to scan. Also they didn't take real good care so am using photoshop to get rid of a lot of spots, lighten/darken, fix colors and the results are fantastic. My husband says I really have a nack for this and has been encouraging me to take some more advanced photoshop classes to look for work using photoshop. I understand they pay quite well depending on the job. It's been a blast seeing my DH's childhood and I'm having a lot of fun organizing the pics. Once they are all scanned in, then I will be creating CD's to give to his siblings (he has 3 siblings), plus his mother. Another idea I was thinking about, which my DH told me I should do is offer services to people to help put their photos and family history into albums for them to pass on to their children. There are lots of grandparents out there who have tons of intersting stories to tell, and am sure lots of wonderful photographs. I thought about putting together some kind of busness where I could record their stories and type it up and somehow match photos with stories. I'm doing that myself. I've been doing genealogy research now for the past 20+ years and am having a blast creating a family history album with stories and photos for myself (even though I don't have any children to pass it on to), but I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who just don't know where to begin. I don't know how much time that would take or what anyone would charge for it, but I think it would be fun. Hope that helps a bit. Sometimes all one needs is a fresh idea (or two). MTing can get tiring. Especially when the hands start cramping up. Everyone keeps saying you have to take frequent breaks, but if I take frequent breaks I don't get my work done and I don't get paid.

memories of [2008-08-16]
sitting at grandparents on the back steps (very wide to fit the porch) and eating watermelon, or watching my dad and brothers taking turns cranking the ice cream machine and all making fun of each other for being too weak. It was so quiet you could hear the windmill squeak, very restful. Hearing stories of when Daddy and his three brothers were young and took turns jumping out of the barn hayloft with a parachute made from one of grandma's good white sheets which ripped. Daddy said he hugged that limp sheet all the way to the ground. Uncle Joe said they let him go first because it was his idea, but they all got a whipping for it. At my other grandparents, Mother and her sister talked about skating all over Austin jumping the cracks in the sidewalks. I had to be quiet when John Cameron Swazy was on (Timex keeps on ticking) or Billy Graham. Going to the barbershop (Papa was a barber) for haircuts. sitting on the porch snapping beans or peas. Aunt Nell and Uncle Frank lived in the country, feather tick mattresses and bolsters, chamber pots and outhouses, mean chickens. Aunt Nell's hair was let down at night and hung below her hips. She had a built-in ice box (not fridge) and a water pump in the kitchen and thought she was in high cotton. They lived in the house she had been born in. She had sunbonnets by the back door. Never went out of the house without one and at 86 still had beautiful skin you would not believe. Kept their money in a bible. They had a 17 year old hound under the front porch with no teeth who acted like he would tear you up. They called him didhebitecha. She made the best biscuits in the world until canned came out! Daddy loved woodworking, helping him hold large piece of wood in the shop or handing him tools. I was anxious to learn to cook (I never said I was smart!), made cookies and such at 12, cooking whole dinners by 16. Being the oldest was not all you would think it could be. I was a miniparent. I remember my baby brother being droopy drawers, would step out of his diaper and keep going. Love to remind him of that now when he is 52 and 6. Then came two more sisters, the last when I was 17, Mother had it made for that one! I remember my border collie, Lady. We got her when I was 9 and she was 2. Had her until I was 21. One of those dogs who knew who could come in the yard and knock on the door and who to run entirely out of the neighborhood. She was my best friend. She had trouble delivering her last litter and my grandmother helped her. I remember the attic fan, and wish I had one now. My son does and it saves him AC bills about 2 to 3 months of the year. I remember being around my great-grandparents. In fact, one grandmother was 90 when she died in 2000. I was 54. How many can say that? I also remember seeing a civil war veteran in the 1950's. This feels like such a time warp as the memories go flashing by. I remember when most moms stayed home. The fuller brush man went door to door. There was a man who traveled around sharpening knives and scissors. Milk was delivered to your door. Remember keeping wet clothes in a bread bag in the fridge? You put a tin sprinkler with a piece of cork around the base on a 10 cent coke bottle to sprinkle while you ironed. Do they still make those? and I remember when keyboards had a cent sign on the number 6 key! Just for the groan effect, here's one for you - gas was 18 cents a gallon and there was a gas war between competing stations!

bleeding dog: tore off toenail, what to do? [2008-08-16]

Bleeding dog (sm) [2008-08-16]
We just had the same thing happen to our Beagle 2 months ago. The little nail on his back claw was ripped out by the root when he was jumping down off the kitchen counter. There was blood everywhere! We rushed him to the vet, and the vet cleaned the area with peroxide and wrapped it with gauze and then Kling wrap. He gave our dog a shot of antibiotics and then oral antibiotics for the next 10 days. We had to keep him in an E-collar to prevent him from chewing it and bring him back for dressing changes. After he finished the antibiotics and had a couple of dressing changes, we kept a small sweat sock over his paw to keep the area clean. You can probably clean it and dress it yourself. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. You might want to put some antibiotic ointment over the area before putting the dressing on. Good luck!
