The Stick is making a comeback [2008-11-11]

Them that don
Unfortunately, the schools stick their nose in many things that should be the parents job (sm) [2008-10-16]
my children have had teachers give one-sided views of politics, whether they should be democrats or republicants, who their parents should be voting for, etc. For some reason, some teachers don We don't pay them to teach their opinion.
I'll stick with my antenna! [2008-09-23]
A lot of people think when TV changes over to digital, they will need to switch to cable or dish TV and I just wanted to point out that isn't true. You can get the converter box and stick with your antenna. That's what I'm doing. Plus I found with the converter box, I get over twice as many channels as I did before.
Best of all, it's free! (Well, the converter box isn't free, but at least I don't pay a monthly fee.)
The news does tend to be bad, true. Put your head back in the sand then. [2008-09-04]
However, see if you can stomach this....2 yr old toddler disappears for a month as her mother appears to party like a 22 year old with no children by the camera's eye. When grandma finally realizes something is amiss upon discovering her daughters abandoned car with the smell of decomposing human tissue in the trunk, the 911 calls begin. Casey Anthony is a deeply disturbed young woman who by all appearances seems to have done away with her beautiful little girl by means of a shovel and gasoline. The truly unfortunate person here is the child, Caylee, whose mother is a monster.
Recently we did a non-stick linoleum and I [2008-07-10]
cannot believe how much it looks like tile. The installer put in down in 1 sheet and it looks great. Very easy to clean, although you can I never would have picked this out in a million years but a few people told me to give it a try. I brought a piece home, placed it on my kitchen floor for a couple days and really liked it. We were going to put hardwood in our kitchen (as the rest of our house is hardwood), but I Good luck.
Okay, don't want to be a stick in the sand [2008-07-02]
We lived near the beach for many years and saw this one time too many. So, instead of being afraid of the ocean be more afraid of the sand. Please don't let your sons dig holes in the sand, at least not deep ones. We have seen children and teenagers have serious accidents or worse with this. The sand collapses into the holes and consequences can be fatal, so just heads up on that. It was also just on the news so I hope a lot of parents watched it. What seems like fun can turn quickly into a serious situation. It was just a known fact in our home..... no deep holes at the beach.
Sorry to be a downer....just want to make sure the boys AND parents enjoy themselves. Do have a good time though!!!
What do you mean that the sand can collapse? [2008-07-02]
I I don They definitely won Please explain what you mean, so I can make sure to avoid this.
Hang in there and stick with it, be consistent, .just like children..... [2008-06-20]

Moon Sand [2008-05-06]
It looked like so much fun and so easy on TV that I bought some for my daughter's birthday last year. It's the messiest thing ever and it doesn't work the way it does on TV. She's only used it once or twice and outside at that, and I try to make her forget she has it. I should just throw it away.

Stick Vs. Modular [2008-02-19]
I think stick means a house built completely on-site with 2x4 lumber from the ground up. A modular is a house built in sections in a building somewhere else and then the sections are moved to your site and put together there. All the modulars I have been inside seem to develops cracks in the walls and ceilings as the house settles over time. Just my opinion but I think stick will give better quality overall, thought probably cost more. But I have seen extremely nice modulars when they are new.
Stick and stone...seriously! sm [2008-01-29]
My dad worked with a guy who named his boys stick and stone. Didnstick and stone, get over here and sit down! I about died! I had to run to the back room real quick to hide my laughter.
Oh really? Even if they say accummulation of 1-3 inches, that won't stick? sm [2008-01-19]
LOL! I have no idea! It has to stick. It just has to. I mean, then that won't really matter if it doesn't stick!! I'll post pics when it's all over! haha
It's snowing and starting to stick in Birmingham! [2008-01-19]
My 4 yo is in layers of clothes with socks over her little hands lol! I asked her to wipe off a leaf (over my waist high off the ground) to see what snow tasted like...she said it tasted like yellow! LOL! I told her not to get any more snow from that bush! This really beats Winter Storm of 1993 when we got snow, but had no electricity for 6 days! Like the OP, I have tried making trip plans for my little one to see snow and it has never worked out, so this is the first time for her :) She is having a blast...I like it too!
Hope you get your snow down south!
I definitely wouldn't stick around! Once a cheater, always a cheater. [2007-12-15]

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG
Halfway homemade NE clam chowder sm [2008-11-19]
I say half-way because I use cream of potato soup as kind ofa base. This is enough for my family of 5 to have plenty with a little leftover if there is nothing else to go with it (we sometimes have grilled cheese with it).
6-8 slices of bacon
1/2-1 stick of butter
1/2 medium-large onion, chopped
1-2 Tbsp minced garlic
4 cans Campbell's cream of potato soup
3 cans minced or chopped clams (keep the juice)
Half and half, maybe a quart
Cook the bacon, butter, onion, and garlic in a large pot until the bacon is done. Do not drain. Add soup and clams, including the juice, and gradually stir in half and half, stirring constantly to keep it from curdling or burning, until heated through.
I would start charging the JA for room and board - sm [2008-11-16]
If he is so lazy he wonfriend, and tell him the gravy train has stopped and he needs (1) to either take the dogs and take care of them himself, (2) start paying you $200 a week to feed and board the dogs (a bargin)--and if he fails to pay the dogs go to a no-kill shelter (and stick to it), (3) in the future if he does take the dogs back, that he has to find other arrangements for their room and board whenever he is away, unless he pays you in advance with cash and supplies the food.-- yeah he will think you are a shrew but who cares, I'd be so mad at both of them, DH for not understanding and being a wuss for not talking to his friend, and the friend for being the typical male and taking advantage of a good thing. Good luck, and stick it to them!
Don't know about "sweet" but dog is God spelled backward sm [2008-11-16]
I put up with a terrier mix (not a pit - just a mutt) who was hyper and ate everything, my house shingles, kitchen floor, rugs, etc., tried caging her and she bent the wires, scaled a 6 ft. fence or dug holes underneath to get out. We called her Hogan's Heroes. When she literally ate my whole couch one cold Christmas Eve with 20 people coming, I called the SPCA in tears and they said no one would take a dog like her, they would only bring her back and she'd be put to sleep. So I kept her over 16 years and she's buried in a pet cemetery nearby. I now have a 120 lb. Golden who had big paws when he was born and the last one left because he was going to be big, so I took him. People have dropped off dogs to me crying and I found homes for them. I understand how we can't turn away these beautiful animals others don't have the heart to understand.
I would present your husbandbill for food, etc., but don I believe in good deeds being rewarded. It takes time but good only leads to good things coming back at you. I doesn't seem that way right now and times are tough, but hopefully you will be rewarded in other ways.
I am so fustrated I am in tears...sm [2008-11-15]
Ok here goes...My husband has hunting beagles. He has about 5 of them. I love dogs and I love beagles. Well he drives an 18-wheeler and is gone a majority of the time. I take care of the dogs daily, i.e. feed them, clean their kennels, and put fresh water. It is a chore, but I love the dogs so I do it. It is for my husband anyway, and we are supposed to help each other. When he is home it is his chore. Well he has a buddy down the road who lives about 10 minutes away. They take their beagles out together and let them run rabbits. Well his buddy is bad about leaving his beagles over here and not coming to get them in a timely manner, and I have to take care of 5 more dogs. Food isn Well you have to make him come get them. A couple of weeks ago his buddy went on a hunting trip in Tennessee and needed someone to care for his beagles. Well I didn I was fustrated to learn though he brought them and left them in the kennels and left no food for them. I had to feed these dogs of his out of our food and there was 5 of them. I mentioned to my husband that I thought that was rude. I was nice enough to care for his beagles while he went away. He should have brought food for them. I felt taken advantage of. Well he came over last weekend and I thought good he has come for his dogs. Well he leaves without them. I said oh here we go again. I had forgotten to mention anything to my husband because I got busy working among other things. Well today when I went to feed the beagles I got really fustrated because he STILL has not come and got his dogs. So got downrightticked and called my husband. I said you call your buddy and tell him I am not in the kennel business. He can come get his dogs. I said first of all he is back in town and has been a week. Why hasn I said you should have made him before now. I said I was not asked do you mind taking care of these dogs for weeks. I said you should not allow your friend to take advantage of my niceness. He said well I just figure that if you are taking care of our beagles then why can What difference does it make? You are already taking care of these so what is so hard about putting a little more food out. I said I will tell you. It is twice the dogs to feed. I said he did not bring any food. It is twice thesh** to clean out the kennels, which is done, by the way, by spraying it off the concrete floors with a hose with a spray nozel. I feel like I am being taken advantage of and I think my DH should stick up for me to his friend.
Blondie, have read your posts before sm.. [2008-11-15]
You sound like a very good person, very caring. I was in the same situation once with a neighbor's dog. He would go to Canada hunting and just leave his dog tied to a dog house in mid-winter in New England and I would take her into my home, feed her, keep her warm and all. This neighbor today I can say with full confidence was borderline-retarded without a doubt. I am so glad I did this. I even at one time went to the dog pound and claimed this dog who had gotten loose and said it was my own. I could not let this poor dog suffer because of its owner. All I can say is do what is in your heart, it may cost you a few dollars more but think of it is abandoned children and you are there for them. Take a good look at this guy and truly ask yourself is he is capable of the love and caring you have in your heart. I know times are tough, but perhaps you are the one who is meant to save these poor animals. Sounds like this guy is either not the sharpest tool in the shed or something else wrong with him. Does he have enough money for beer or etc., and not his dogs? Then he doesn't deserve them! Think hard about the dogs and what would happen to them if it were not for you. You are a very nice person. I hope you find an answer. As for your husband, only you can answer that question. I think he should at least stick up for you and address his dumb friend as to what his responsibility is in the situation. Good luck, Blondie, you are a sweetheart to put up with all this, and I am sure the dogs are in a better place with you. Do you have an SPCA or someone who could help with the food? Perhaps online you can find a way to make your own food suitable for dogs at a reasonable price. May God be with you. Perhaps you are meant to care for dogs in some way that would be beneficial to you in other ways. God bless you for caring.
I always buy generic. [2008-11-14]
I oftentimes laugh when I am shopping at my local store as I know when a meal or baking is done what the problem could be in doing this as doubt anyone can tell or if there is a difference that I made this with generic eggs for say 1.29 a dozen rather than those fancy eggs with a little stick-on at about twice as much. Doubt it.
Find a local closest to home discount grocery.
Stock up on staples and store them appropriately. If you bake, store brown sugar with a piece of bread in it to keep it soft, replace it if you need to. Lots of items can be stored in freezer bags of the appropriate size, spaghetti, macaroni, etc. Better than the bag it comes in. Get those generic too.
I buy all my paper items in bulk - much cheaper to buy a 12-roll of TP on sle definitely than not. Just make sure its not single-ply!!
My new favorite is Vidalia onion cornbread sm [2008-11-13]
Vidalia Onion Cornbread (from Paula Deen)
1 box Jiffy corn muffin mix
1/2 stick butter
1 large Vidalia or other sweet onion, chopped
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup whole milk
1 cup sour cream
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese, divided
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dill weed (which I leave out)
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with vegetable oil cooking spray. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and saute the onion until tender, but not browned, for about 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and add the muffin mix, egg, milk, sour cream, 1/2 cup of the cheese, the salt, and dill weed. Stir to combine. Pour into the prepared pan and top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake for 30 minutes, until set and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cornbread comes out clean. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares.
I double the recipe and bake it in a 9x13 or even 11x15 pan and it comes out great. And to keep the cheese from getting too dark, I add it the last 10 minutes instead of at the beginning. So yummy!
Second favorite is corn casserole, very similar to the onion cornbread.
Corn Casserole
1 pkg Jiffy corn muffin mix
8 oz sour cream
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
1 egg
1 can whole kernel corn (do not drain)
1 can cream-style corn
1stick of butter
Melt the butter in an 8x8 baking dish in a 400-degree oven. Meanwhile, mix the corn muffin mix, juice from whole kernel corn, egg, and sour cream until well mixed. Add remaining ingredients and pour into dish with butter. Stir slightly to mix in the butter. Bake 30-45 minutes or until set in the middle.
Again, I have doubled this recipe and baked in a 9x13 pan; however, donot double the butter or it is too greasy.

1 bag of thawed hashbrowns (I use the cubed, my kids don't like the shredded hashbrowns)
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 stick butter
salt and pepper
2 cups shredded cheese (I use sharp cheddar).
Crushed corn flakes
Melt butter, reserve about 1/4 cup. Mix everything together except corn flakes and reserved butter.
Spread crushed corn flakes over top, pour remaining butter over and back at 350 for 1 hour.
It is a great side dish, goes with anything.

Happy to share. If you've ever had Hummingbird Cake, I have been told that this is a lot like that, without the spice (I think the spice would make it more like Carrot Cake, but not sure).
Pineapple Nut Cake
Preheat oven to 300 degrees
2 eggs
2 c. sugar
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. drained crushed pineapple
1 c. chopped pecans
1 tsp. vanilla
Beat eggs, sugar, and vanilla 'til sugar is dissolved. Add flour, baking soda, and pineapple. Add nuts and pour into greased/floured 13 X 9 pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Cool completely before frosting.
Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 8-oz package cream cheese (softened)
1 stick butter (softened)
1-1/2 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Combine all ingredients and mix well.
Hope you try it and like it! This is another thing that I could live on for days.
It is just the love they can show...sm [2008-11-08]
You would have to own one. Mine touches my heart. I can't explain it. But he has a geniune love for me. For instance, I went to Walmart this evening and on the way home my husband called and said your dog is depressed looking out the windows for his mama and whining. He shows such genuine love it is just amazing. He waits for me at the door of the bathroom when I get a bath and will whimper and stick his paw under the door. How can you hate an animal capable of such love? It touches me.
Interesting. My mom used Vicks on us for everything. [2008-11-06]
The joke was that Mom thought Vicks VapoRub could cure cancer! I remember her rubbing my chest with it in great gooey gobs all over my chest which made my pajama top stick to me. She also had a special humidifier, which was a huge glass jar with some sort of heater attachment on the top. Steam rose up from the jar and passed over a little reservoir of Vicks. The result was something akin to a Vicks potpourri. But that contraption got really hot, and I remember getting scald burns from it when I got too close. Ahhh, the good old days! :)
We have a turtle. She is a red-eared slider named...are you ready?? Skurtle. sm [2008-10-30]
Our son named her. She is about 5 years old now. She started out the size of a silver dollar and has progressively increased in tank size. She started in a 5 gallon tank and is now in a 125 gallon breeder's tank. If I had known then what I know now.....LOL. She has a night and day light, she has her basking light, and she has a UV A&B light since turtles to not manufacture calcium themselves. She will eat those little feeder goldfish out of our hands and will eat her normal turtle stick food from our hands too. We have a TON of her plates or whatever it is they call the things on the shell from when she was just little to now from when she sheds them. It is really interesting to watch her just live the life of a turtle. Eat, sleep, poop, and swim.
I did the "point" system several months [2008-10-29]
ago that I had done a long time ago and it does work. I lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks. Just stick with it.
I did WW for about 2.5 yrs and lost 72 lbs! sm [2008-10-29]
It works but you need to stick with it. Don it is also not a diet but a lifestyle change. Do try to find some fruit/veg that you enjoy; the fiber definitely helps you feel full and lose. Low sodium V8 is a good 1 pt or 0 pt option to get in 1-2 servings of veg daily. Eat a piece of fruit for your snack. I found that I really began enjoying fruit-veg after a while. Get active, drink water and give it a chance - WW does work well and nothing is off limits.
Gee, I think I should rejoin! Good luck.

I have fostered dogs in the past, but [2008-10-25]
had a hard time giving them up, still have all three! In my area, the shelter relies heavily on donationsto keep operating efficiently, so basically the foster homes take responsibility for all expenses of the animal being fostered.Fostering gives animals a chancewho would otherwise be put to deathbecause of lack of room, money or lack of people to rehabilitate the ones who have been mistreated and need extra attention. It is so worth it to give an animal a second chance at life. You have to be willing to let go though when the time comes and it is very hard to do. I just could not do it and so now just stick to volunteering at the shelter and doing fundraising and stuff.
First rule: Know your prices. sm [2008-10-23]
Second rule: Then again, it won't save you any money to drive all around unless you are making substantial purchases. If just one item is a little higher at Wal-Mart or the grocery store where you already are shopping, might as well go ahead and get it then. I shop first at the Dollar Store. Love Top Job and can't always find it anywhere else. Also, those old timey remedies include vinegar, cheapest and proven to kill as many germs as alcohol and bleach. Back in the day, I remember the ladies starting out the wringer washer (yes, I am that old) with the whites, then running those out to the side and reusing the water. I have actually wished a few times I had a wringer washer, especially after a hurricane. Then they started rinsing the clothes using the same water as long as they could for the rest of the stuff.
Make a list and stick to it, no impulse buying, take your coupons, maybe include a small cooler or thermal bag in your vehicle especially in the summer.
Check out the new lightbulbs, LEDlight that is almost always on. From what I understand, there is no real saving if you just turn it on to get something, then turn it right back off. I had motion detection lights outside, but had to unplug it, too much breeze here on the coast and the trees constantly set them off. Almost choked on that light bill.
Some economist on TV was saying to shop the perimeters of the store and avoid the center aisles, this for both money and health reasons.
See something really cute and not too expensive at wal-mart? Started telling myself I bet I could get 50cents for that in a garage sale in 6 months. Not doing the impulse buying will save a small fortune; it really adds up. Don't look at the stuff while you are checking out, either.
Check out America's Test Kitchen, not long ago they had a program on making your own pizza in 30 minutes. If you have kids, that can save you a fortune, that is about the most expensive thing out there.
my grandmother made the most wonderful soup - from a soup bone and leftovers. She never threw away leftover veggies; they went into the freezer in little bags until needed.
That is another thing, cut back on the meat and up the veggies.
I do splurge on some things. I usually have canned chicken ready for cheater pot pie and frozen pie crusts. All 3 of my daughter-in-laws use that recipe now, great with leftover chicken or turkey, another thing to be frozen when left over.
If you do eat out, make it during the day when prices are down.
maybe I gave you one or two things anyway. Good luck.
Sorry to hear this but (sm) [2008-10-11]
what the heck was he doing out at 5:30 AM with a 9-yo?
Did you have a talk with him or just tell him? I think you made the right decision for now. Let him think about it.Maybe you can have a close friend of yours or him to try to talk sense into him.
I didn't state in my earlier reply that I, also, am a stepmom. My husband's son lived with his grandmother for the first 3 years and he was terrified of me. Long story there, but his real mother was kicked out when the child was 6 weeks old and his grandmother drilled it into his head about his mother.
My husband and I had many a fight over him, but I tried to stick it out until the day my stepson said I wasn This was at a birthday party and that was the last straw. I left my husband that day.
My best friend sat down after thatand had a chat with my husband because he never intervened when his son made snide remarks about me, and he finally realized he was on a guilt trip for his ex3 years, but now his son calls me mom and he treats me better than my own son!
I wish you the best of luck. It is a tough road to haul, but if your guy cares anything at all about you, he will try to figure out the problem.
I'm sorry you are going through this. [2008-10-10]
I understand completely how you can feel that you are just done. I hope he had a chance to cool off and think about things, but probably not. I can understand when you say that everyone sees it but him. Friends of ours still say things to me to do this day, one person will say things directly to him, which helps because then HE also knows that its not just me, which can be so difficult.
If you decide to stick this out I have some great books that really helped me get through our difficult times. I re-read them from time to time too. There is also a good support website online for stepmoms. Google smoms and you'll find it.
I wish you all the best in whatever decision you make. Just make the decision for yourself and not them.
Oh, and not sure if it will help at this point or not but another piece of advice - When I felt like the 3rd wheel or not included I woudl do as another poster suggested and leave the situation. It really sucked to feel like I was leaving my own house some times but it felt really good to not tell anyone where I was going, not answer cell phones, and just go get a pedicure, go shopping, or go to a family members house for the weekend (and no my family didn't know anything because I often visited them at other times).
just remember, its not YOU, even if he says it. *hugs* and good luck.
Update on jealousy/stepkids... [2008-10-10]
Okay, the man in my life with the kids did not come home until 5:30 this morning and at 5:32 AM I was telling him that I had taken all the disrespect from him and his kids that I was going to take and that we were going to have to just end this relationship.
Don And ya know what? I just feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest...
Like I said, [2008-10-05]
this dog went everywhere with us and even went to work with me. She wasvery involved with and apart of the family, not wanting for attention. I agree with you that other breeds have a problem with biting, but not many of them actually kill what they bite. I have had many mixed-breed dogs and have found them to be more stable than the pure-bred dogs. I think maybe the problem with the Pitbull breed is that they became very popular and there was too much inbreeding and indiscriminate breeding going on, making for very unstable dogs. Like I said, you never know what you are getting in a Pitbull, or other popular breeds for that matter, so I will stick with my lab and mixed-breed dog and never again take a chance on a Pitbull, Rot, or other dogs with qustionable temperaments. Better safe than sorry after the fact.
do not feel guilty [2008-09-25]
Do not feel guilty and do not second guess yourself. You know your daughter. And no, you are not over-reacting. If you feel there is a problem, there most likely is. I went through this same thing with one of my daughters. She had been a straight A student, triple-letter athlete, etc., etc., etc., and then bang....whole new kid. She couldn for my family the counseling paid off. I now have a very close relationship with this daughter. I hope you find the same.
