Well if your daughter knows how you feel [2008-09-01]
Hire movers and ignore that jerk. There are plenty of college kids that would be willing to help out for next to nothing. Also check with your local churchs.
Why wait for dad? When you do that, you imply you are the weaker parent, for lack of [2008-08-26]
You told him to sit for 4 hours (which I agree was harsh for an 8-yo) and gave in after 30 mins. Say what you mean and mean what you say, or the kids will think you're a pushover. Don't leave dad to be the enforcer, you enforce the rules, otherwise they'll fear dad but not you. Know what I mean?

I feel for ya, really do! [2008-08-07]
have you hadtesting done to be sure that you need the Clomidto ovulate? Have you had hormone tests, check your fallopian tubes, check uterus for fibroids, endometrial biopsy, etc., sperm count/analysis for husband? I know some who Clomid has worked for.
The reason I ask, although keep in mind this was back in the dark ages in the Had an old-fashioned doc that I just loved to pieces but would have been in my best interests to get to a larger city with more sophisticated methods as it turned out. Went through lab tests, laparoscopies, laparotomies, hysteroscopies, etc., husband had multiple tests, had my tubes examined to see if open and always were, years of taking the Clomid and back then basal body temperatures, which probably still isn Turned out, when finally suggested, to have a diagnostic DC, had multiple fibroids and retained products of conception from a previous missed abortion, which we knew about, which I guess my old doc back then didnC afterwards at 10 weeks. I got pregnant immediately after removal of all that...thus, my question as to what else you have had tested to be sure you just need the Clomid. Also, gave myself Pergonal injections for awhile instead of the Clomid before I had the surgery, more powerful stuff and more chance of multiples.
Six months forward after delivery, decided wanted to try again (always wanted a lot of kids since I come from a really small family) since wasn Old doc retires, go to a new doc. He does a laparoscopy, says my ovaries are so stuck together and to abdominal wall that I would be very, very lucky to ever get pregnant again, just keep taking the Clomid to kick out the eggs and maybe a lucky egg would find it Yikes! Continued for awhile, 3 years, and decided to go to Denver. Doc there, still back in the I won't go into all the complications I encountered along the way with both these pregnancies, was just very lucky and in decent health and shape for my age back then, and had some docs on the ball.
Sorry, not trying to make this about me, but it brings back those memories of the desperation of so much wanting a baby and the frustration, and really hope it works out for you and wanted to throw out any suggestions I could think of. I never had anyone to talk to back then, everyone always said, aren Have you had any abdominal surgeries in the past? just in case you haveadhesions or something in there that could be blocking things. Are you sure you You might want to check into doing those tests twice a day as you might miss the ovulation from doing the test from onedayto the next. Are you timing them according to the length of your cycles? Not saying Clomid wonpossibly be preventing pregancy. I wasted a lot of years before finallyfinding out what the problem really was and didn't need the Clomid after all.
Good luck to you and your husband! sending good vibes your way... Ask lots of questions and do research on your own, too. I know what a strain it can be on the two of you, just Hope I haven't offended you by all of this, just throwing out suggestions from my experience.

I must ask, how did it get this far? I have always parented with a very strong hand. I am the disciplinarian and my husband is the softee.. I think I missed the whole story...
First and foremost, be her mother. She has plenty of friends, and you are not one of them. You are her parent. She is to do as she is told.
I think if my daughter called me names or cursed at me, I would probably be in jail right now. I would not think twice about slapping or even punching her in the mouth and knocking her teeth out, and she knows it. Teens to fear something or someone, and, I think, in this case she needs to fear you..
Good luck and my heart goes out to you. Parenting is never easy and it is a job for life!!!
Never give up on her...show her who is boss.
You're the parent, she's a minor child [2008-07-16]
This is sadly too common. Your daughter is pushing your bottons in a big way.
I remember being that age and partying it up. One day it just became very boring and that was the end of it. Sadly, many people I knew didn't have it quite that easy.
My first real love and a friend of his were killed from DWI at 19. Not only did they hit a car with a family of 6 (who managed to live), the rest of us had 2 funerals to go to. The priest for my boyfriend's funeral was actually his uncle!
The pattern she displays is not good. Many good girls hit this age and venture into situations which they're ill-equipped to handle.
My guess is that she's doing plenty more than she says. It's not that she doesn't love you.
I have no idea how expensive it is to get a drug test done on her hair, but that may be one avenue. Of course, it'd be easy to get hair from a brush, etc. I have no idea how you could get a UDS unless you simply asked her point-blank for one (since she claims she has nothing to hide). I'm just not buying it, I'm sorry to say.
About 2-3 years ago a friend of mine from high school was found dead in her apt. from alcoholism. This was one of the girls who had parties at her house in high school. She didn't even live to see 50 and died alone, sick, and miserable. When I found out from another friend I was surprised at first, but started retracing backwards and it was clear as a bell. Her father was an alcoholic. We didn't realize the significance of alcoholism in previous generations like we do now.
I also agree with another post I read about that this is your home, so she needs to abide by your rules. Of course, Dr. Phil says that all the time, too.
I can't have kids, but I remember being one. Speaking of Dr. Phil, maybe you could check his boards, too.
It's so frustrating to get to this point, but just know that many here will support you and offer as much advice as possible, even if it may be from an MT without kids.
Please keep us posted, and best of luck to you.
I feel the same way about the dust bunnies. [2008-07-10]
They are easy to see and clean up with a quick vacuum or pass of a swiffer. I've heard that a carpet that has been in place for 15 years can weigh nearly twice it's original weight because of accumulated dirt that doesn't come up with vacuuming. Our 100-year-old house has original pine flooring. Pine is soft, and we've refinished it once in the 25 years we've been here. It's a more rustic look, and I've raised 3 boys in the house, not minding any little nicks and scratches along the way. Now that they are grown, we'll refinish again. Plus, I like the option of changing the look of the room with a throw or area rug, if I like. Our addition has a subfloor which we covered with carpet. It's our family room, and the carpet is always dirty. The other end of the addition has a wood laminate floor, which has been the best flooring we've had by far. It doesn't scratch, it's easy to clean, and it looks and feels just like wood. Some laminates are cheap looking, as though they were Xerox copies of real wood. We spent more money and got a nicer looking product. When it's time to replace the kitchen flooring, we're thinking of doing a semi-remodel to remove the old vinyl flooring (which is cracking and tearing after 22 years), installing in-floor radiant heat, and then wood laminate flooring. I think that will look great, plus we can find some greener or enviro-friendly recycled products, as well. Newer green construction is doing less and less carpet, because durable flooring can be made of recycled materials, is cleaner, and lasts longer.
Oh, and a friend of mine just had a cork floor installed in her kitchen. It looks amazing! I thought it would like like a bulletin board, but it's actually really nice. Since it's brand new, I can't comment on the durability. But it is eco-friendly, wasn't terribly expensive, and it really looks great. You might want to investigate that.
what does arthritis feel like? -- blew out my hand [2008-07-09]
Last night, while simply reaching for a cup of coffee, the entire back of my right hand developed excruciating pain. Stiff real bad right now. It feels like all of the bones from my knuckles to my wrist on the top of my hand are all cramped and grinding. Loaded on pain pills right now, still pain. No health insurance. How do you feel about pit bulls? [2008-06-11]
A year ago we adopted this amazingly sweet puppy from an animal rescue. Was told he was a golden retriever mix, they thought with Aussie. As he grew we just did not see the Aussie and in trying to figure out his breed, through the vet and some research found out is part pit. He is a lovely, sweet, gentle dog.
Here is the problem. Ohio has strict restrictions regarding pits; you have to carry extra liability, fenced yard, keep them in a pen, etc. Any incidents and the dog is destroyed. My dog is never outside unattended. If we aren't with him, he is tied. When loose we are always right there, and he listens well. He loves our cat and has never shown any aggression towards other people or animals. You should see him with kids and babies. Would melt your heart. My neighbor's Sheltie is meaner than my sweet baby, having bitten my kids several times, and they let him roam loose.
Now a representative Yates in Ohio is proposing a bill that all pit bulls or those suspected of being pit bulls be taken and euthanized. If this bill passes, the dog warden would have the right to issue a warrant and come and take your dog if it is suspected of being a pit. You can read about the law here:
http://www.animallawcoalition.com/breed-bans/article/524
Breed specific legislation is so amazingly stupid and closed minded. Any dog is capable of being vicious, it is just a matter of responsible ownership.
The way I see it (and lived it) the biological parent [2008-06-09]
needs to step up to the plate and handle things. I'm sure of the woman who started this post had a husband that backed her up, she wouldn't be nearly as upset. I'VE LIVED/AM LIVING THROUGH THIS and my stepchild live with us 100% of the time (husband had custody). Sweet and first but things turned sour quickly. And guess what? My husband did very little in terms of taking care of his son, forcing him to be accountable for his behavior, etc. In turn, I ended up being the heavy and HATED for it (still am, and he's an adult now).
I was very young when I married my husband and didn't know what I was in for, just as the OP. You think, how can this sweet child be anything but good? You honestly have no idea what you're getting yourself into. Especially when other people will tell you that they CAN make step-families work. I think they work when/if the biological parent is firm with the child and sets the boundaries for that child, and the stepparent doesn't have to.
It's so difficult. I really feel for the orig poster.

Do any of you feel rejected by ur hubby? [2008-05-29]
I don I practically have to beg the man for sex. I get so sick and tired of being rejected and then he Of course I am mad. You flat out reject me! It hurts my feelings and makes me feel like he does not desire me. Am I the only wife who goes through this crap? I do everything for him...cook, clean, do whatever...and he does not want to touch me. He I swear if his friend calls he goes into a frenzy to answer the phone. Sometimes I wonder if they are butt buddies. I try to not let it hurt my feelings but it does. All I can say is thank God for AdamEve stores!
I told my son if he didn't feel [2008-05-18]
comfortable talking to the counselor, then I would call her. I think it would be good for him to talk to her, though, because: A) He has seen it first-hand and might better be able to answer her questions should she have any; and B) It would be a good opportunity for him to exercise compassion, which I certainly try to encourage my children to do.
i am not even a parent, but [2008-05-11]
i have been blown away by the violent video games, trashy clothes and rude behavior of children and the parents who allow this. kudos to you! what you are doing is wonderful. keep it up.
You sound like an excellent parent [2008-05-11]
I do not have any children, but having grown up with parents who sound just like you I am grateful for what they did for me. I didn't have what every other kid had and I had to earn what I did get. We were involved in girl scouts and my mom was the leader of our troop. She was involved in everything we did and she did not believe in using activities as a babysitter. For babysitting she hired a girl down the road. So I am grateful to have the parents I had (mom's gone but dad is still alive). They instilled values in me and if I ever had kids I would raise them the same exact way my parents raised me. So good for you and I know when your kids are grown with kids of their own they'll remember what you did for them and will be thankful to you. I wish more parents were like you (my sister could take some lessons for sure - but that's a whole nother post).
Please tell me I am not the only parent to feel this way [2008-05-10]
I am a mother of 3 children a boy 18, a girl 11, and a boy 5. In my home, driving is not a right of passage, it is a privilege. You must obey house rules, keep your grades up, and you have to purchase your own vehicle. You must also have a job to pay for insurance and gas, as we are not a bank or an ATM machine at your disposal. If you cannot follow the above, umm sorry
Am I the only parent out there with children that sees no point in cell phones for kids, especially for the younger ones. I swear most of the kids my daughter Am I one of the few who monitors what their children watch on TV? Am I the only parent that makes their children earn time for video games and then has a set time limit for it when they do get to play? Am I the only mother in the world who thinks its horrible to let your daughter run around in clothing with words across the behind?? Seriously who do you think is looking at this and why do you want to draw attention to your child Ooohhh ya and all the parents who sign their kids up for little league things and dump and run. These practices and events are not free babysitting!!! I honestly know of a few mothers that take their daughters to gymnastics and leave them there and go down to the bar and grill and have a few drinks while they wait for their kids!
Okay, so I know it sounds like I am whining, but I have had enough! I am tired of being told by other parents that I am a prude, I need to catch up to the times, and the one I hate most of all is our kids need us to be their friends! I have a responsibility to my children to RAISE them.
My children and I all have good relationships. We talk about everything under the sun. They come to me with most of their troubles or questions and know they have nothing to fear, I will hear anything and answer them openly and honestly.
That can be done without letting the tail wag the dog so to speak. Are ppl to busy or so self-absorbed anymore to take the time to raise their children?

Husband wants to put dog down (sm) [2008-09-05]
My husband wants to have our dog put to sleep. Last night he was saying we should have our dog put to sleep....he has said this in the past too. The dog is not sick or in pain or anything. He is getting old...he is 14, we have had him since he was tiny. He does have a few skin issues and needs sulfur shampoo, he has a habit of picking at the carpet at times when he is mad or not feeling good. But he is fine. He still runs, literally, to the door when he needs to go out. He never goes near the road, just a good dog. So he thinks we should put him to sleep now, just because he is getting older and might start having health problems? Where is the respect in that? How can you have a dog for that long and not love him? I just donI can It makes me feel like he would do the same to me when I Or if I ever get sick.
I'm not really wasting time during the hours [2008-09-05]
that I am awake - it If I could sleep 4 hours a night, I could:
- always have the laundry caught up.
- always have my house clean.
- cook supper each and every night.
- keep my flowers weeded and watered.
- read at least a half an hour a day.
- spend time in devotions and meditation and prayer.
- exercise.
If I could accomplish these things throughout the week, then I could have each and every weekend FREE!I feel like I could gain my life back if I could somehow figure out this sleep thing.
Thanks everybody for your input.

Wow -these are excellent suggestions [2008-09-05]
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am 49 years old (feel 69 right now). I'm 189 pounds and lead very very sedentery life. No kids, no activity. I know I need to do some activity but I just can't get motivated. However, I do have an exercise video called Callanetics...very low impact aerobics (slow movements with very relaxing music), so tonight I pulled it out and starting tomorrow going to do that at the end of the work day.
I too have to have my caffeine and one day without it I sure can tell. Isemi-organic (at least that's what I call it). I refuse to take any medication (not even aspirin when I have a headache). I'm trying to go vegetarian (or more vegetarin) but I do like meat. Just got to lose weight and a bit more exercise.
Imy friend and I canbaby producing machine, yet I'm cursed with these blasted periods. Okay - sorry, that's more of my own emotional problem I have to deal with. I just want the periods to end. Your suggestions of herbal supplements are most interesting and I will be looking into them. Thank you again for your post.
I need about 10 hours!!! [2008-09-04]
LOL.
Really though, I don8 hours is interrupted by being awoken by the man in my bed that breathes too loud! (i now sleep with ear plugs), plus I have to get up and pee like twice a night...
You raise an interesting point if you can gradually get used to sleeping less... think of all the things I could get done! But it never fails, I have been going to bed around 11, waking up around 6 (interrupted during the night) and without fail I get sooooo sleepy at about 1-2 p.m. Could that be because I have to sit and stare and type all day??
Dont know but I like this post!
I'm tired now :)

How do you psych yourself [2008-09-04]
I I find myself constantly coming to this board. Sometimes I just feel I can I just got my first cup of coffee so that will help, but how do you psyche yourselves out to begin working a full day of typing, typing, typing, and more typing, and if you don I So I have to work. I have no choice. But I am so so tired. I I do like my job compared to others I have had, but I think I just feel so burnt out and wonder how other MTs begin their days. PS - I am not a morning person at all. I have tried, tried, tried to get up at 6 am to begin with a walk or some type of exercise but I can Is there a vitamin or something that would perk me up maybe?
Ideas for Low Energy [2008-09-04]
hi, just wanted to offer some encouragement, if possible, to say hang in there and we all feel like that sometimes. I think it i know that when i started having perimenopausal symptoms, i wasn another option is an herbal infusion made of stinging nettle: http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Energy_Stamina.htm
having energy is a very multifaceted issue, imho, which takes into account one i give myself comfort foods, and yes, coffee.i do an email here and there in between notes or in the middle of one for a very quick break (case in point). if i'm low energy for too long, i ask myself why that might be, which it sounds like you're doing. sounds like you're overworked and worried too, which doesn't help. trying to find ways to reduce stress is key. sometimes for me it's a glass of wine, or watching my favorite show once a week for a treat. whatever is FUN for you is key.
again, just my humble opinion, but itgratitude list on occasion, or a gripe list, whatever feels right at the time!
Good luck!
Fleas!!! help?? Any less toxic solutions? sm [2008-09-03]
We have three dogs - two outside and one inside. About two months ago my husband babysat his friend Apparently they had fleas and infested our dogs kennel We have tried every flea shampoo we can find and cleaned their sleeping areas thoroughly and sprayed for fleas...but they keep coming back. And now our inside dog has gotten them....we keep bathing him with flea shampoo as well. But now - the worst!!! They are in our house! So we have used flea powder for the carpet and washed everything and sprayed what cannot be washed or vacuumed. I feel like our whole house is toxic. And I am not convinced we are done with these little critters!! My daughter actually went to school the other day with flea bites on her (all bugs love her)! The rest of us have not been bitten but have found one or two on us at times. Is there a solution??? Please help if you have any ideas! Thanks
LOL....no....sm [2008-09-03]
I use the dandruff shampoo on my hair, because I feel like my hair oil contributed to the acne. The facial scrub I do in the shower every day, then when I get out and dry off I use the peroxide - if my face has been breaking out. It usually ends up being once or twice a week that I use the peroxide. How did I come up with it? You try having your face break out from the time you are 15 and still dealing with it when you are 40 - you'll come up with some crazy ideas too :-)
I think I will. [2008-09-03]
Thanks for the advice. I can't be the only one shocked by this. Kids will be kids and how much supervision can I give if I am not there?! I don't feel comfortable depositing a check into an account to be used for whatever, whenever.
tv show/movie board [2008-09-02]
Do any of you feel we could use a TV show/movie board?
I'm in complete agreement with you. SM [2008-09-02]
I talked to my daughter about the facts of life and my stepson, when he lived with us. They understood exactly how easy it was to get pregnant or get a girl pregnant.
It amazed me when my daughter told me some friends from school didn't know menstruation was a cycle. They thought it just happens!
I don't care if a parent is conservative or liberal, you must talk to your children and discuss sex with them and explain how their bodies grow into adulthood. If you want to stress abstinence, fine, do it, but by all means talk to them. Give them the facts, then have trust they will do the right thing and getting pregnant at 17 is NOT the right thing.
I believe this all has to do with the total dumbing down of America. And we wonder why things are so bad.
There obviously is more to this than just $10.00 . . . [2008-09-02]

He sounds like he is very young and immature. I have a problem with people who are not willing to help, especially when it is family. It sounds like you did a lot of the work already. Does your daughter know how you feel? If so what is her opinion? It does not sound like he is putting his best foot forward fora good start to this relationship either with you, or with your daughter. Best of luck to you.

If you don Is it possible you If so, then I can see why he wouldn More than likely, he feels like he If he's not good enough for your daughter, why is he good enough to help you move?
I agree with the poster below [2008-09-01]
Just because he is your future son-in-law doesn't mean he owes you anything. It sounds to me like you want to cause problems between him and your daughter because of this when you say you think she should have talked to him. This is between you and him. You asked for help, he told you what he could offer, take it or leave it.
It sounds to me like he made the comment about not having things placed or set up because he expects that you would want that. I certainly don't know your relationship with him or your daughter and do believe there are always 2 sides to every story and feel like we didn't get the second side to this story.
I don't say any of this to make you feel bad in any way. Your situation reminds me of my own mother. Except that she will do whatever she can to get things resolved before asking either of her son-in-law's to help and they are more than willing to do anything for her...she just knows that they work full-time, have a family, and life is hectic. When she does ask something she asks them directly (not through the daughter) and asks for bare minimum - she usually gets much more than that on the son-in-law's own accord not because he is obligated.
A way to help orphaned children in Africa sm [2008-09-01]
http://www.godsgoldenacre.org.uk/ - I read a book this weekend called God which is a biography of a woman, Heather Reynolds, who started a program in the South African province of Kwa Zulu-Natal, in the valley of a 1000 hills. She helps children who have been orphaned primarily due to their parents dying of AIDs. Right now I have children of my own who need me, but when they are adults, if I am physically able, I want to go over and do as much as I can - I am very happy because for the first time, I feel like I know what I am meant to do in this lifetime. In the meantime, they ask people to donate if they can or at least to make people aware of them by posting the link to their site.I grew up very hungry, right here in America, and help came from many sources throughout my childhood. I distinctly remember one group of women from a church who came in and literally filled our cabinets with food. Although the name of this organization is God you don
Okay, I'm that way in a hotel, with twists (sm) [2008-08-31]
I take antimicrobial Febreeze and spray the blanket and bedspread down first thing. It makes everything feel and smell clean so I can relax. I take my own supply of towels and pillowcases. I lay a fresh pillowcase over the pillow each night. I only use hotel towels for the floor mat and to mop up counters and dry off bottles. I wash any dishes before use unless they are wrapped in plastic. I always bring flipflops so I don't have to walk barefoot on the carpet at all. I check the foot of the bed for signs of bedbugs - bugs or brownish stains from poo.
I never sleep without underwear under my full-length PJs anyway! I'd love to be assured they are washing their sheets and towels in hot water with enough Tide and Oxyclean to be up to my standards, and then drying them thoroughly, but I sincerely doubt it.

If you do some good internet research you can find out what the dealer actually pays for the car before their mark ups. I bought a new car several years ago and took this information with me. It was about $3000 less than sticker price and I only paid a couple hundred over this base price AND they went to another state to get the car that I wanted because I didn't want to wait for one from the factory. They will push you hard so be ready to stand your ground. Also, ask them to throw in license fees, plates, taxes, etc. in the price. Many places will do this if you finance through them and some will give you a gas card for $50, free oil changes, and what not if you ask at the end. Just remember, the worst they can say is no. You will likely never see this person again. I would recommend using your own bank for financing. If you use theirs I feel they use that to their advantage and finance you the sticker price and make it more difficult to bargain.
How often do you see your niece/nephews [2008-08-31]
My brother-in-law and sister-in-law moved back to this state recently after being gone for many years. They have 2 teenagers. All 4 are living with grandparents right now, most probably indefinitely but that My question is how often do your niece/nephews spend the night at your house? Mine are also out of state so it is hard to say what it would be from that side. I just feel like after having little family here for so many years I am now on family overload. These kids want to stay and be with us all the time. Granted, I understand they have no friendsbc theyarenI rarely say no bc I don and of course I like less mess to clean up. not to mention teenagers are expensive. So what Once, twice a month?
