I have a BFA and am an artist sm [2008-11-23]
I am not, at this point, trying to make money at it. I have sold things in the past, however. Stuff I do: scratchboard landscape painting in watercolor and acrylic, some oils colored pencil drawings for really intense and detailed color reborning dolls I design and make rag dolls and their wardrobes soft sculpture stuff interior design (have done loads of this for money) silk ribbon embroidery and regular too crochet knitting tatting (needle and shuttle types) sewing (a particular passion because I design clothing, draft the patterns and make the item, always fits like a dream) decorate cakes which I have been paid for I don't quilt. Because I make garments I can't see the joy behind taking a big piece of fabric, cutting it into little pieces and sewing it back together to make a big piece of fabric. I know there is a lot more to it, but this is what stops me! I don't scrapbook because I don't need another hobby (see above). I especially appreciate the efforts of others with regard to scrapbooking and quilting, because I don't do these things. I have used my design skills to make a living. I am an extremely good costume designer and I have built some incredible costumes in my time. There is not a lot of money in community theater and more to the point, I don't like theater types. It is not my scene. I prefer to work in a solitary environment without a lot of other people's input. This is probably at the root of my being an MT. The money is good and I have enough time and funding to participate in my avocations.

The news does tend to be bad, true. Put your head back in the sand then. [2008-09-04]
However, see if you can stomach this....2 yr old toddler disappears for a month as her mother appears to party like a 22 year old with no children by the camera's eye. When grandma finally realizes something is amiss upon discovering her daughters abandoned car with the smell of decomposing human tissue in the trunk, the 911 calls begin. Casey Anthony is a deeply disturbed young woman who by all appearances seems to have done away with her beautiful little girl by means of a shovel and gasoline. The truly unfortunate person here is the child, Caylee, whose mother is a monster.

Okay, don't want to be a stick in the sand [2008-07-02]
We lived near the beach for many years and saw this one time too many. So, instead of being afraid of the ocean be more afraid of the sand. Please don't let your sons dig holes in the sand, at least not deep ones. We have seen children and teenagers have serious accidents or worse with this. The sand collapses into the holes and consequences can be fatal, so just heads up on that. It was also just on the news so I hope a lot of parents watched it. What seems like fun can turn quickly into a serious situation. It was just a known fact in our home..... no deep holes at the beach. Sorry to be a downer....just want to make sure the boys AND parents enjoy themselves. Do have a good time though!!!

What do you mean that the sand can collapse? [2008-07-02]
I I don They definitely won Please explain what you mean, so I can make sure to avoid this.

Moon Sand [2008-05-06]
It looked like so much fun and so easy on TV that I bought some for my daughter's birthday last year. It's the messiest thing ever and it doesn't work the way it does on TV. She's only used it once or twice and outside at that, and I try to make her forget she has it. I should just throw it away.

Didn't watch...but what is this funky "Pick-Up Artist" about? [2007-09-10]
Anyone watch this? I happened to see an episode last night while flippinMystery guy and his cohorts are!!! If any one of them had come up to me when I was in the dating world I would have laughed out loud and looked for the candid camera! I could not believe the crap they were feeding these poor guys they are supposedly enlightening. I got a great belly laugh from watching the guy lisp on about conquests, pick-ups, and the meaning of medallions, but I don't think that was the true intent of the show. LOL

Not exactly "art" but....... [2008-11-22]
I took some beading lessons. At first it was fun and rather expensive for tools, lessons, etc., some were taught by ladies I knew, others I paid for. I bought only the best crystal and silver. Then I found out the whole rest of the world was beading. If you went to a bead show you would not believe how many people go to these things and if you go to a craft show, you see booth after booth of beaded necklaces and earrings. I did get to make some beautiful gifts which paid for itself. You can make money at it but then you have to get into licensing, etc., sales tax numbers, and be really into it. I was just happy to have it as a hobby and sometimes make things for special occasions and am greeted with oohs and ahs from the receivers. You would have to check out a few craft shows if there are any in your area. I donartist per se, but others seem to think I have talent. Havenselling but I probably could, it's just that there are so many others doing it, it's a gamble and I can't afford to gamble right now. Just my input. I tried drawing lessons and I struggled with it, so I will leave that to the talented ones. There are those to whom it comes easily. I struggle with it. Beading is addicting though, kind of like eating popcorn, gotta know when to stop. I use Firemountain Gems for my supplies. They are online and also have online free lessons. Got to crimp or else you will lose your beads, have to do it properly and use good-quality supplies. I worry too much about quality and can picture a bride walking down the aisle and psssshhhh, so I double crimp and use good stuff.

Screen names...how did you come up with yours? [2008-11-21]

Art - BFA -- I don't want to teach and it - sm [2008-11-09]
openings for art teachers are few as it is, also it is hard to support yourself as an artist unless you are really, really good, or really, really lucky.

LMAO!!! [2008-08-28]
I I loved the picture in the sand.

Keep your hands off your face [2008-08-19]
and be very gentle with the skin around your eyes and face. I see other people rub their eyes and faces vigorously when they're tired, and when the hands come down, I see wrinkles around the eyes. I'm 45 and people think I'm as young as 26. I do have the dark circles, which I have to cover with 16-hour foundation in a shade lighter than my regular foundation. Then I set with powder. I sometimes apply a dab of pink powder to the darkest areas or the inside corner area. This is what the makeup artist from What Not To Wear does to counter darkness. Preparation H is supposed to shrink bags.

Plan [2008-07-16]
My plan is to get the proper number of strips ready and sent in (the syndicates require a certain number be submitted at once so they can see the continued potential). The artist and myself will be 50/50 partners (in writing, of course). I believe my idea has potential for other outlets if it is picked up (think of some other comic characters). The money will be split, but I cannot afford to pay anyone up front. Basically we would be business partners.

Any amateur artists out there? [2008-07-15]
I have been wanting to get a comic strip idea I have rolling but I need an artist. (I can draw some but not good enough to do the variety of character positions, etc.) I found a guy in my area a couple of years ago, but he just didn I think he really wasn't a good enough artist to pull it off either (like myself). Anyway, with the Internet, being in the same location really isn

I think she means [2008-07-03]
that with unstable dry sand, or even with sand of a wetter consistency, if a hole is too deep (over a child make whatever limit you feel safe with. There's nothing to fear if they keep it shallow. This happened to a man I knew years ago with dirt, not sand, but I agree it would be possible in sand and probably easier done. He was working in a ditch deeper than he was tall, and when it collapsed on top of him, it killed him. I do believe that is what 'SM' is warning against.

Most beaches have bicycles [2008-07-03]
for the sand. They are seated like a go kart, sort of, and you lean back/recline, steer with your hands on levers at the side, and pedal out in front of you (like a pedal boat, for lack of a better comparison). I've always meant to rent one. It looks like major fun to me!

We're off to the beach and need some ideas! [2008-07-02]
I think I have most of my bases covered, but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas for the trip. We're off to Ocean City MD for the fireworks - woohoo! I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5. We figure it We have a DVD player for the kids and they each have a portable video game to take. I think I have the drive down pretty well covered, but if you have anything to add, feel free. At the beach -- we borrowed boogie boards from a friend for each of them to try. I We also got some sand toys for building castles. Any other suggestions here? I'm afraid 1 or 2 won't like the boogie board thing and get bored very easily with the sand toys. We Anyone else know of anything at OC, MD that was really great for kids? Hubs and I have been there without the kids last summer, but really just enjoyed eating out and walking the boardwalk. I don We usually vacation at resort towns - like Disney and Dollywood - where there Just looking for suggestions!

near the coast myself, used to love [2008-07-02]
taking the kids down there. You probably don't have jelly fish that far north, but take a small bottle of meat tenderizer in case of stings. Familiarize yourself and the kids with flags and what they mean. Undertow is a big deal, never try to swim straight back in, let the current carry you until you can get past it and then swim in. Then again, you can get far away from each other without even noticing, so look out for that. I can almost smell the beach just reading your note. I hope you have a wonderful time. Sunscreen, of course, bucket to rinse off sand from feet and legs before getting back in the car. Been too long since mine were that size.

Gnat Issues [2008-06-10]
If there are from your potting soil in your house plants, try repotting all of your plants with new soil and adding a thin layer of beach sand/play sand to the top of the soil and only watering your plants every 3-4 days. If they are coming from your drains, try dumping some bleach and boiling water down the drains. I hope this helps Angie

have you checked how damp your houseplants are? Before you laugh..see msg. LOL [2008-06-09]
Where I work we had a problem with gnats. Somebody thought to Google gnats. Evidently if your houseplants are too wet, they live in the dirt. Or something like that...anyway..they went out and bought 100 pounds of sand and everybody with plants got some and put it over the top of the dirt in the plants. Worked like a charm. Hope this helps.

What do you think a kid would do this? [2008-05-18]
Agirl whogoes to school with my kids (she is 16 years old)sits in class, shakes her head over a piece of paper, licks her finger, picks up her dandruff from the paper with her wet finger, then eats it. This is not just a rumor -- both of my kids have seen this with their own eyes. The girl knows the other kids are watching her, but she does it anyway. We have known this girl for 4 to 5 years and she and my daughter used to be very good friends. They are now at a different school (the other was a private Christian school with a tiny class) and she is starting this bizarre behavior. She has always been a little odd, but very kind and very thoughtful and a truly gifted artist. I I donbut it might be too late!I I can Any ideas on the root of this behavior?

My 14-yo daughter sold her first original design [2008-05-04]
for a snowboard decal this weekend. She is quite the little artist and a friend of her brother's came up to look through her portfolio. Not only did he buy the design he wants to use for his snowboard, he told her he would like to put her in touch with a friend of his, a tattoo artist, who may be interested in some of her other work too. This could be her toe in the door. She would love to do design and sell her own graphic T-shirts.

You can't wait until he is better....he will never [2008-04-18]
Your whole life is passing by and he has purposely isolated you from your family. He does not own you - you are not his possession. You have and have always had the right to come and go as you please and have your friends and family members come over any time but he has denied you that right. He is insecure and jealous of your sister. He wants you all to himself....he is treating you like a possession. He doesnno your sister can I feel so sad for you that you have let all these years pass letting him tell you what to do. It will be hard and there will be arguments but you have got to stand up for yourself before your life just slips through your fingers like sand. You sister should have been welcome each time she wanted to come. It sounds like he is afraid you might care about someone other than him. Please let your sister come and see you...tell him if not, you are going to see her and you are staying for two weeks! or three! Your life is passing you by and he is keeping you from living it.

LOL! [2008-03-21]
You know, my husband was an art major in college and was always IRRATE over the Draw Tippy ads in the backs of mags -- like you could draw Tippy and become a world-renown artist in 6 months! Sadly, now I know exactly what he meant and how he felt!

Can someone smarter than me [2008-03-20]
DS#1 needs more of the markers he used on his shirts. I can C FabricMate. It also says conforms to ASTM D-4236 and NFP200A....whatever that means. I've called all the craft stores and artist supply stores in town and I've looked online, but I do not see this brand. What am I doing wrong????

I plan on going there this coming weekend! [2008-02-26]
I LOVE Yankee candle! I have candles from there all over my house! I haven't had a chance to check out the newer scents yet, but my all time favorite summer scents are Storm Watch, Cottage Breeze, Sand and Sun, and Midnight Cove. I'm sure there are a lot more that I love, but I just can't remember all of the names right now! I have Chocolate Chip Cookie burning in my office right now and Macintosh Apple in my living room.

Well, now I know why Lindsay is always in trouble. sm [2008-02-19]
From the words of Dina Lohan herself: It was very tastefully done, Dina tells PEOPLE of the photos, a recreation of Marilyn MonroeI respect the photographer as an artist, so I look at them artistically. For him to call Lindsay 46 years later and to say can you recreate these photos is an honor. I looked at it as art, and as Lindsay doing a character. So I don she was being a character. So if you look at it that way, you can look at it as a mother. And Dina adds that had the photos been inappropriate, LindsayTrust me, Dina tells PEOPLE, I wouldn What a joke! I don't care what icon - I would never encourage or be okay with my daughters ever doing that!!

AAARRRGHHHH!! [2008-02-13]
I live in Maine, and honestly this is the WORST winter in many, many years! I'd like to find that groundhog that saw his shadow and give him a piece of my mind!! I can't wait to lounge on my beach with my feet in the sand!!!

She really wants to go there [2008-01-20]
so she has been applying for things since September. They also give automatic scholarships based on GPA, SAT and art portfolio. But crikey, it still seems like a lot of money to pay to be a starving artist! Her brother wants to go to MIT which will cost about the same, but his income potential after school will probably be a lot higher. Guess I should get back to work as the bills are already rolling in.
