Not scary now, on TV, but REALLY scary in the [2008-10-28]
Best line: I think we

but remember, back then that WAS scary. LOL. sm [2008-10-26]
I remember going with my friend to a matinee and when the shark came up onto the back of the boat, we both of us pulled our feet up on the seat. LOL.

Pretty scary, isn't it? [2008-10-16]
I just don Those cities must have been wicked beyond compare. Part of me says Wait just a little longer, Lord but another, ever increasing part of me says Come even so Lord Jesus.

Soooo cute! I have a lab/great dane mix... scary to some 'cause he is so big. But he is a big wus [2008-10-14]
Are those mini-pins! A while ago I was running with Walter (my dog) and we came across a lady with 2 mini-pins. Walter wants to meet everyone and the lady said they were friendly so we let them sniff, but all of a sudden they were all over Walter with little tiny flashing teeth. Walter yiped like a little baby and skulked away and the lady said oh my they never do that. Why do they always say that, like it is my big dog Well anyway, just this weekend I saw the mini pins in her car at the market when by coincidence I parked next to it. When I opened my door they were up on the dash and leaping at the crack in the window and snarling and barking at me. I know they could not get to me but I cringed and hustled away. They looked really scary! I swear I felt like they could jump up on me and grab on something like my ears or something and not let go. But I am sure they are sweet... NOT! But it goes to show you never know... they are all animals, after all. And like people all have very distinct personalities, very much formed by their family (the people family, I mean). I could tell the owner of the mini pins was kind of a ---- well you know, not that nice... she left them in the hot car, after all... and they were pretty much a product of their upbringing. I too actually think pits have some of the sweetest dispositions I have ever met in a dog.

Scary isn't it? [2008-06-30]
I don't have any advice for you, but I have an 11 year old son. Found out that lots of kids in his MIDDLE SCHOOL are having sex, drinking, smoking, and using drugs. This is in a 'supposedly good' school in a suburb of Atlanta. There is also some gang activity. I will be homeschooling him starting this fall. I am so sorry to hear of your problems with your daughter. I hope that someone here is able to offer you some sound advice. I know that it is not a good feeling to have someone living in your house whom you feel you cannot trust.

Scary! Thanks for sharing because [2008-06-26]
now I'm going to be on high alert. Thank God you caught it when you did! BTW, which company are you talking about that might have been an inside job? I'm hoping it's not one I have an account with! :0)

They ARE amazing, aren't they? Definitely scary - (sm) [2008-04-19]
when you're indoors.... so much banging, rattling, stuff falling, etc. But if you're lucky enough to be outdoors, as I was during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake (7.1 on the Richter), it's totally awe-inspiring. I was getting ready to wash my truck, and was carrying a bucket of soapy water across the yard. Suddenly the trees started shaking, and I thought a sudden breeze had come up on what had been a quiet, muggy day. Then I saw that the barn was swaying back and forth, and realized it was a quake. A few steps further, and it really started rolling. Had to hang onto the side of the truck to remain standing. Giant redwood trees were whipping back and forth so far that the tops of them were almost horizontal. We had a large pasture in front of the property for horses, and there were large waves in the ground, moving up and down with more than a foot and a half of vertical displacement. I couldn't help but laugh... it was pretty funny. Interestingly, all the horses turned and stood facing in exactly the direction of the epicenter. Once it stopped & I could let go of the truck, I ran into the landlord's backyard to look at the pool. The waves were big enough to surf on. A friend of mine who lived up in the Santa Cruz mountains was driving down a long, steep, straight road when the quake hit, and she actually saw a big wave in the pavement (the primary, or P-wave) coming straight at her. She stopped and rode it out in the truck. Another, very LUCKY friend, had been driving on I-880, and had just emerged from the covered section of freeway that collapsed when the quake hit, so wasn't caught in that awful disaster. He said it was weird... felt like he had a front flat tire, so he stopped on the side of the freeway to check his tires. As did several hundred other people! Imagine the whole freeway stopping, and everyone looking at their tires.... a 'Chinese fire drill', California-style. My mom lives directly on top of the epicenter of the Northridge quake of ྚ. It was a very sharp vertical quake, and it literally threw her out of her bed, lengthwise. Good thing, because the bookshelf/headboard part of the bed fell over and landed where her head had been on the pillow. I lived down there during the 1971 Sylmar quake, and I was trying to stay in my bed while it bucked like a bronco. My sister was in the bathroom hanging onto the sink & screaming. We had a jillion aftershocks from that one, which were more unnerving than the original quake. Every time we had an aftershock, another of my sisters started hyperventilating. That night, my parents were having the floor measured for new carpets. The poor contractor doing the measurements was so rattled by the shocks, not to mention everyone screeching and running out of the house when they hit, that he measured everything wrong, and the carpet they brought didn't fit. So a couple weeks later he had to come back and do it all over again. I was in Jr. College back then, and had a part-time job working at a stable. After the quake, when the sun came up I went up to the stables for work that day, and it was too dangerous to clean stalls with the horse in there during the aftershocks, so I had to take each horse out and put it in a corral while I cleaned the stall. Took me forever! I was up there all alone all day, and wasn't really worried, 'til I sat down on the ground to sharpen a pair of animal clippers. THAT'S when I realized that the ground was continually moving all the time.... jiggling very faintly, sort of like Jello. That's what got me feeling spooked. Another time, I think in the 80's, when I was at work we had a long, not-that-strong, rolling quake. I was in the basement using the copy-machine at the time. I'd had a migraine that day and had just taken Fiorinal for it, which made me feel a little strange sometimes. While at the copy machine, I was feeling really dizzy and strange, and hearing strange creaking noises. I'm thinking, 'Wow... I don't feel so hot!' The rolling continued, and I felt kind of nauseous. Tried not to look at the light in the copier, which has triggered migraines in me in the past. Noticed lots of people standing in the doorway to the Medical Records dept. and Radiation Oncology, and my foggy brain wondered why they were all taking their break at the same time. Still felt sick, and decided that if I didn't feel better within the hour, that I would go home to bed. Right about then, (with the floor still rolling), someone commented to me on how nonchalantly I was copying away during an earthquake! I was actually relieved to learn that's what the problem was, and not a reaction to the medication! :D

Can tell you that Ambien is a little scary [2008-01-23]
my daughter was prescribed it and she did very bizarre things in her sleep that she has no recollection of - covered the entire bathroom floor with an entire box of tissues very neatly, sat down to go to the bathroom without pulling down her pajamas, walked into other people Jack Nicholason said he nearly drove off a cliff on Ambien.

Vegas scary? [2007-10-09]
My husband and I visit all the time- he has nights when he goes where he wants and I go where I want- I love the shows, he does not- we split up and OMG, I am a woman all by myself out on the streets of Vegas… I am scaring myself! People are all over the streets day and night- I feel completely safe, probably safer than in my home town. Why scare someone??

Yes, it's very scary (sm) [2007-10-06]
I remember when the study came out in a health magazine back in the ྖs. I found this link, which tells more of the story than I remember from the health magazine article. http://www.all-natural.com/microwa1.html I've been told I'm an alarmist (even a whacko!)....so I don't really talk about these things very much. My own family doesn't believe in much of this either, and I won't go into it here in great detail. But let me just say this: The best thing to do is to be informed, and then each of us can make the decisions for ourselves, of what we put into our bodies, or on it, etc. For myself, I do not to use a microwave. I do not buy genetically modified food, if I know what it is, and can help it, that is. Corn is the scariest thing out there right now, that's in so many different foods/drinks: http://www.truefoodnow.org/shoppersguide/guide_printable.html#baking I buy organic food and non-hormone and non-antibiotic meats, non-irradiated as well. I use only biodegradable household cleaners, nothing toxic. I do not use flouride toothpaste or antibiotics that are fluoroquinolones. I do not to use a deodorant that has aluminum in it. I will not have any vaccinations that have mercury in them. I now get only porcelain fillings, no more amalgam (silver, mercury). It's on my wish list to get all the old mercury out of my mouth, and I've been doing it slowly. I also stay out of the sun, because I have fair skin, and skin cancer runs in my family. I try to make as many healthy choices as I can. Like I said, though, all we can do is inform ourselves. Find out everything you can on things that may be poisoning us, without our even knowing it. Then choose how you go about living your life.

wearing your heart on your sleeve [2008-11-25]
I too have spent too much time thinking about this. From your post, your description of your daughter's intelligence and your own dismay at the rudeness of these people, I can only come to one conclusion.....You are hanging around people less intelligent than you are. Not figuratively, but IQ. You are sensitive, they are obtuse. However, I have also discovered that the people who use a simple hello as currency to give or take away, are broke. The worst snobs in my neighborhood are broke and don't want anyone to know. They try to hide their financial status, but you don't so you are scary. I have been treated the worst by the mean and stupid. Think about what a breath of fresh air your daughter is to that little boy. I am glad you went to the party.

This story is so weird to me, I can only wonder... [2008-11-13]
I watched 'The View' today. How did this man get pregnant? This is a puzzle to me. And how come that his wife, who had an hysterectomy is BREASTFEEDING the baby? How did her body produce milk? Isn't it that one must be pregnant before producing milk? t is all a hormone thing. This is all so weird to me, downright scary and I do not like it a bit.

Has anyone here had the painful problem of having to place their parent in a nursing home? SM [2008-11-08]
My beautiful dad passed away last year. My mother and father were devoted to one another, my mother always taken care of by my father in every way, married 67 great years. My mom has always had excellent health, but after about 1-1/2 years, she has deteriorated to the point where I do not know her and I am scared, she is frail, not eating, almost unable to walk, struggles to dress herself or do for herself, will not accept a home health aide, we are trying to cook and clean for her at home but it is getting very scary, she just turned 90 and she seems to be failing fast. I am so sorry this is so long, but it is all so complicated, it is like she gave up the second my dad died. Anyone go through this yet????

I went in 1975, with my sister who had already seen it. [2008-10-28]
the scary surprises were just about to happen. Like when the guy was diving next to the rowboat, and the guys's head bobbed into view inside. I think my sister's reaction to that freaked me out even more than the movie did! If you watch it on TV now, you can tell it was a rubber shark (named 'Bruce'!) But Steven Spielberg was so good at creating the FEAR, long before you ever saw what it was you were supposed to be afraid of, that by the time you finally saw Bruce, you TOTALLY believed he was real.

Wrong. And why do you think a same-sex marriage [2008-10-16]
a heterosexual one? The ceremony is exactly the same... we're not talking voodoo and witch-doctors, here. Unlike too many other parts of this country, SF is more tolerant and forward-thinking. I know that's a scary concept in some places, but homophobia, violence and hatred towards people who appear 'different' is a scary concept out here. I love SF's diversity, color, vibrance and tolerance. That's why even though it's ridiculously expensive to live here, especially for an MT, I just couldn't stomach living anywhere else.

Many are against it because they [2008-10-16]
believe it to be morally wrong. Not scary, but wrong. Like stealing or killing or gossiping. Many are against it because they believe God said do not do it. (They believe hesaid those other things are wrong too.) Would it make sense to say someone is afraid of gossip because they are against gossiping? Do you understand my point about why it is the wrong word?

I'm a volunteer nurse at the free clinic [2008-10-13]
I do medical transcription for money and nursing for free. I've been a nurse since 2001, and I sometimes miss people! Unfortunately, since I've upped my hours at work, I haven't been able to volunteer for the last couple of months. Doing the free clinic is not like actual nursing work in that there's no backstabbing and pettiness, just appreciation. It's scary, though, knowing what medical problems people have been having for days and have to wait for the free clinic day because they couldn't afford the doctor's office (or the hospital). However, the doctors who do volunteer have the free clinic patients come to their real clinic for free if they have an issue that can't be addressed at the church where the free clinic is located, like drainage of a cyst or something. Anyway, I wish I had more time for it. *sigh*

Understandable....sm [2008-10-12]
That is understandable with all you hear about them. Sometimes they look big and scary too. I used to be afraid of them too until I came to know a few. Then I became a pit bull owner myself. I realized they are just a dog though. They are just as capable of love and affection as any other dog. If you knew one you would love them. They are really one of a kind. All the media hype makes them out to be something most of them aren't based on what a few are. But your fear is understandable if you don't know or have never been around any pits.

you are close-minded...sm [2008-10-07]
What about these other dogs such as German shepards and Rotties, and even some of the little ones like my sister's boston terrier that tried to attack my son? I didn't get angry. I just said you know I know she is sweet with ya'll but she has to stay outside when I go over because she is aggressive towards other people. I have had a poodle try to bite me. I don't ever get mad at the owners cause I know these dogs are gentle and kind with them, but I am not familiar and it is doing what its instincts are, which is to protect its territory and owners. My beagle does not like other female dogs. She will try to bite. If you knew this sweet little beagle you would say no way would she try to bite but with another female dog yes she will. ANY dog can bite. ANY dog can be dog aggressive. ANY dog can be people aggressive. But lets face it, the pit is prejudiced becaues it is a pit. It is a big muscular scary looking dog. So therefore it has no right to share the instincts most dogs have? It isn't a pit thing, it's a dog thing. Banning dogs is unfair. If we are gonna ban dogs then lets be fair and ban ANY aggressive dog. If that was the case and we banned all breeds who showed any aggression we wouldn't have any breeds left because all dogs can be aggressive.

To I'm ticked. [2008-09-14]
Wow. Talk about huge mistake. I do not understand why they did not double check their records either. I have a scary one as well. When a friends father was in ICU for a total of a week, they couldn't understand why his sugars were so low. On the eve of trying another med it was found they were giving this man insulin and he was not diabetic. Yes we all make mistakes but WE are not health care providers. I am not saying they do not make mistakes either but we hold them to a higher degree of accountability. That mistake was just plain wrong. I am sorry for your worry.

KEY FACTOR HERE THOUGH . . . [2008-09-02]
is the financial situation they are in where EVERY PENNY COUNTS. We have to remember they are in a very scary financial situation and women like to have that financial security.

temper, temper [2008-08-25]
I have the sweetest boy. He is 12. He is kind, thoughtful, funny, smart, and a joy to be around. Lurking underneath all that, though, is a temper that erupts violently. It is rare, which is good, but it is pretty intense. There are 2 things that I wanted to share with you. 1) After his last outburst, when he lost it and started punching his older brother over and over with every bit ofstrength he had (Scary to see, BTW!), I found out that the whole event was not as out of the blue as I had thought. He had expressed to me verbally a few times that certain things were bothering him, but I didn I felt terrible about that, because I didn I don 2) The thing I have tried to express to him about the violence is how quickly things can turn very serious. I told him that there are lots of people in prison who killed other people and are sorry that they did, but the only reason it happened is because they never learned to control their temper. In past years there have been a few instances in the news of brothers killing brothers - teens - over things as small as a pack of gum or a video game. I think that made him think a little harder about self-control and how important it is to practice it. I do believe in spanking, but I also believe that there are kids it does not work for. I

do you know where the fish is coming [2008-07-18]
from? Kind of scary after watching some consumer reports. The state of Alabama is one of the few to have a fish inspector and he will not order fish in a restaurant in his own state! You don't even want to see where they catch fish in China or what they are fishing in. That is being sent over here. Good luck.

Kids/situations [2008-07-16]
Hang in there. It's tough, and no there is no one-size-fits-all answer. I had a very permissive mother (and a father who was with us but not really involved) and I did some normal teenage stuff that was not the best, but I was much, much, less wild than the girls I knew whose parents were extremely strict. They did things I wouldn't have dreamed of doing, and they always found a way to sew their crazy oats in spite of their heavy limitations. I'm not saying it's good to be overly permissive ... it's not. But I think a lot of it comes down to personality of the child, and you have to try to find the best way to deal with each personality. And, let's face it, one can only have so much control. The rest is their decision (whatever the consequences). That's what is so scary. Maybe you can find some true stories (like the one poster whose daughter ended up in such a bad way) to show her for examples. There are probably a lot of them on the Internet and maybe even on Youtube. Please keep us posted.

been there [2008-06-30]
It is very scary and hard to know how to deal with these situations when they are basically really good kids - good grades, caring, thoughtful, involved in clubs, etc. . One thing I did with my daughter was told her straight out if I ever found out she had been drinking and driving, her car would be gone - not for a week or two either, at least 6 months and probably longer. . Also, if I found out she was riding with someone who had been drinking, she would be severely grounded. . There was ALWAYS the option to call for a ride home with no questions asked. .These things never happened as far as I know - I did find out, later, about a time or two when alcohol was consumed and she stayed all night at a friendhappy there is danger in that too - as her response/judgment in certain situations may be off. . It seems that you have good communication with her and you definitely want to keep that going. . It is a fine line - you want them to know what you do not approve of, yet want them to be open and honest and talk to you. . Hang in there, it will get better.

Bioidentical hormones -DHEA cream, ever used it? [2008-06-27]
Yes, perimenopause is here (yipee, huh?)!I am looking into bioidentical hormones as opposed to things like BCPs (which I have not taken in years). I am looking at being on a program of progesterone cream and DHEA at the moment from a doctor who deals with a compounding pharmacy. The side effects sound a little scary, but there are side effects for everything, right? Has anyone else used DHEA? Tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly...

Thanks [2008-06-22]
I will suggest that to the man of the house. He said just call him and he will take care of it (he just leaves the huge spiders for me) HA HA. The snakes are not long at all, maybe 7 or 8 inches long and maybe bout as round as a pen/pencil (not real big). I had no idea about the poster that said even if you cut off a snakes head (poisonous) it could still bite you. Eeeks! Now that's scary.
