According to the Ohio State University Extension, it is because there was excessive preheating--longer than 5 mins. I assume they mean while the tomatoes were being heated prior tobeing placed in the jar. From experience, it does not affect the taste. As long as the seal is tight, they should be fine. I feel for the people who come to get advice or even vent and they get such negative comments when the person giving the negative comments does not know the entire situation. I once posted wanting to know if anyone knew of any self-help books for people who are in difficult marriages and how to feel good about yourself and all I received were posts saying divorce, take the kids and leave, etc, etc. I was not in a situation that would warrant leaving. But I too have read the posts below and there really are some terrible posts from people. I often think about a news story I heard awhile back about some lady who posted something on the internet about some girl and how she wasnnasty-grams and hurting others. I do believe in Karma and the Ripple effect and one day this will come back and bite them in the you know what.

I love this kind of stuff. One of those PITA doctors who either mumbles or speed talks and just irritates me to no end was dictating from home. I used to give people the shirt off my own back, and I learned the hard way to cut it out! It's good you can't help them--you'd be throwing away your own hard-earned resources if you did. Let them earn where they want to be. If these people truly did nothing to create their plight, why didn't they check out social services or Catholic charities months ago? 90% of the time a hard-luck story was created by the person telling it. Speaking for myself, my best life lessons were because I had to dig myself out of a world of I created my own self. Others deserve the dignity of doing that--and as someone already posted, it can be done. Just takes patience and self-discipline.

But I don 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren night time coughing in a child (or adult, as we found out personally), put Vicks Vapo rub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even those very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good, due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept totally cough-free for hours every night that she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed at how it works. DON TRY IT THE NEXT TIME YOU GET A BAD COLD. It has had an effect on some with job loss and problems finding a new job. Luckily for me and my hubs we have been able to hold ours. Gas prices are outrageous as well as groceries, I have noticed the same as you. We live in an area where you have to drive quite a distance for any work - hence my decision to work at home in transcription and take a paycut. Had I known nearly 10 years ago that it would cost so much in gas we wouldn't be living where we do...but that's hindsight and nothing I can do about that now. We have talked about selling our house and moving but that seems like a lost cause. Working at home has definitely payed
off as every time gas prices go up, in a roundabout way I feel like I have gotten a raise.
I am buying generic more often and we have cut back on junk food. No chips, ice cream, soda, anything. We just can't afford it. If I'm going to spend the money I want to spend it knowing we are getting nutrition packed in.

SAFE HAVEN LAW [2008-09-21]
Wow, this just blows me away. Last year or early this year a mother aged 17 or 18 gave birth to her 2nd child without parents or anyone for that matter knowing she was pregnant. She walked into an Omaha Hospital and left her child in a restroom and walked out. Please note at that time Nebraska was the ONLY state which did not have a safe haven law on the books. It was pushed through shortly after and is now a law FINALLY. Which is good because now mothers, who do not want to or cannot take care of their children have a safe place to take them without being in trouble for doing so.
Well, to myunderstanding this law (NE only), does not have an age limit as to how old the chid can be when dropped off at the hospital. Other states have it cut off at 14 but none have ever seen a child OVER 3. This information came from a radio show about the new law yesterday. Since the law was put in place a mother dropped off an 11 year old, a different family dropped off a 9 year old and this mornings news has the following

Girl, 13, Abandoned At Omaha Hospital
State Takes Custody Of Teen Under Safe Haven Law

OMAHA, Neb. -- The state has taken temporary custody of a teenage girl who was dropped off at an Omaha hospital Saturday under Nebraska's new safe haven law.
A representative from the state Department of Health and Human Services said the girl, 13, was left at Immanuel Hospital around midday. No other details were released.
The girl was the third child dropped off at Nebraska hospitals in the past week.

The state's safe haven law took effect in July and allows parents to abandon children at hospitals and other locations. The law does not set a minimum age after which a child can't be left without prosecution.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I agree with the law all the way. I am just concerned about the after shock of having an older child dropped off at the ages stated above, what kind of damage is that doing to the child? I do not agree with child abuse and know that older children are abused all the time but is there not another way we could deal with this?
Just wondering what everyone else was thinking.

From what I have read, their policy relates to donwloads, says it is equal to downloading 4 full-length videos per day before it is consideredexcessive usage. I asked my employer about it and was told it would not affect us as all we do is exchange info with our servers. So unless you do a lot of actual dowloading, it should have no effect.
Timeshare/Vacation Club [2008-09-11]
Last summer, my husband and I got suckered into one of those timeshare talks while on vacation. We ended up buying into the trial program. It wasnprice freeze should we decide to buy in after that. After returning home and reviewing the package a little more closely, we decided that we wanted to cancel the trial package. I did a little research online and found that we had 7 days to cancel a timeshare. I immediately sent a certified letter to the resort company requesting to cancel the purchase agreement. They never responded and I ended up calling them to see if they had received my request. They confirmed that they did but that it was non-cancellable.
We stopped the autopay that we had set up on a credit card. From that time on, we began to get collection letters. I contacted the real estate commission for that state and asked for this to be investigated, to which I received a blanket letter from them stating that they tried to mediate but that the resort refused to resolve this. The resort basically stated that it was not cancellable and that we owed the money.
What I am wondering is, what happens now? The resort said they would continue to pursue this issue through third-party collectors. If I legally am obligated to this debt, why wouldn Why would they continue to draw this out? What effect will it have on my credit score? Anyone ever been in a similar situation? I should also note that we never used this vacation package. It expires July 2009. The total due has now escalated to about $1500 due to their late fees. I don Any suggestions?

Please tell me if I I I My daughter is getting married in November. I only have about 3 rooms of furniture and a lot of it is already boxed and in a storage room. At my other grandparents, Mother and her sister talked about skating all over Austin jumping the cracks in the sidewalks. I remember my border collie, Lady. We got her when I was 9 and she was 2. Had her until I was 21. One of those dogs who knew who could come in the yard and knock on the door and who to run entirely out of the neighborhood. She was my best friend. She had trouble delivering her last litter and my grandmother helped her.

just to be safe. I have Bellfull feeling on the left side of my face with numbness and tingling, and my left eye was twitching like mad and the center of my tongue was numb for several days. The following afternoon, it was full blown. My mom isa massage therapist and she said that having a vigrous or deep tissue massage can definitely get blood flowing and so this may be a side effect of that, but to definitely seek a medical opinion just to be safe. has PMDD, and she takes Prozac with great success. I believe I just have PMS, but Prozac is not a good drug for me because of the side effect of apathy I get. If you take it and find yourself wading through dirty laundry, you'll know what I mean, LOL. I'm dealing with perimenopause, so I tried a soy-based estrogen-like product. It helped some, but then I changed to one that contained black cohosh. Wow, did I feel great. No PMS at all. Unfortunately, I lost my appetite and have stomach discomfort and dropped a significant amount of weight while taking it.

However, I also read a site that said it could cause GI trouble and even a liver condition, so I quit the black cohosh a week or two ago. My appetite and weight are still not improving much. Need help with difficult child [2008-07-28]
I have 3 children, ages 11, 8 and 5. My 8-year-old has always been a difficult child, starting in early infancy. He was always fussy and became quite stubborn during his toddler years. He is now 8 years old and I really have my hands full. He can get quite mouthy with his father and me (married and live together) and has even got physical with me. He has always been physical towards his brothers and is always fighting with them. He has given his teachers a hard time as well as my parents, who spend a lot of time with him.

Collection Agency Tactics?? [2008-07-19]
Does anyone know who I should contact, or if I have anything to complain about regarding a collection agency out of Texas. I used to actually work for a collection agency 20+ years ago out of Florida, and we would NEVER have been able to say what these people have said to me via phone, let alone in a letter I just opened. Long story short, yes, I owe HSN $200+ for a computer I bought on a payment plan of $135 a month. Before I was done with payment #2, it broke, and thus began months and months of me sending this junk back and forth with Gateway. It was a lemon model, thus why it was offered for 5 payments on HSN. After I made payment #2 and Gateway had the computer for repairs more than we had it to use, I called HSN. In no uncertain words, the sales rep told me you bought it, you deal with it. There were lots of reviews at this point on HSN and all buyers were furious, as it was junk. HSN quickly removed the computer and reviews. So, yes, I have been lax in paying it, but it didnASSEMBLE AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORT WHICY WILL OR MAY INCLUDE...INFORMATION AS TO MY CHARACTER AND GENERAL REPUTATION... the caps and bold are their writing. It then goes on to say that I should send $$ immediately as they have NO DESIRE TO CAUSE ME EMBARASSMENT... Can they word things this way? I have never in all my life seen anything worded to this effect, as obviously, even though they use the word may, it is a direct insinuation to scare me that they are going to ruin my reputation and are questioning my character, and threatening embarassment. Another problem for dogs is the fact that fireworks seem to be going off for a few days leading up to July 4th as well so there is no way of knowing exactly when your dog might be subjected to a loud bang.
Below are some suggestions to help ensure that your pets can get through the fireworks unscathed.
It is a good idea to bring any outdoor pets inside during the fireworks.Always remember how acute a dog's sense of hearing is. A loud bang to us can feel like a volcano erupting to a dog.
It may be hard, but try and stay with your dog during the fireworks. Your presence will help to calm your dog and while the noise may still frighten them, they will feel better and recover much faster with you there.
Always make sure your dog has his or her own special area where they can go to feel safe. Be it an indoor kennel or a place under the stairs, dogs love to have a den at their disposal.
It sounds obvious, but try to keep the windows and curtains closed during the fireworks display as this will lessen the effect of the noise and bright flashes.
Also, normal household noises such as the TV or music can help to distract from the loud noises coming from outside.
Last but certainly not least, always ensure your pet has some sort of identification on him or her. It is a sad fact but many dogs do run away from home because of fireworks.Even dogs that have previously shown no fear of fireworks can occasionally take flight at the loud noises and flashes in the sky.

The ripple effect or Karma [2008-06-10]
I feel for the people who come to get advice or even vent and they get such negative comments when the person giving the negative comments does not know the entire situation. I once posted wanting to know if anyone knew of any self-help books for people who are in difficult marriages and how to feel good about yourself and all I received were posts saying divorce, take the kids and leave, etc, etc. I was not in a situation that would warrant leaving. But I too have read the posts below and there really are some terrible posts from people. I often think about a news story I heard awhile back about some lady who posted something on the internet about some girl and how she wasnnasty-grams and hurting others. I do believe in Karma and the Ripple effect and one day this will come back and bite them in the you know what.

I read this post and couldn't believe it. She asked for positive feedback and you tell her this? What kind of a person are you? Sheesh. Her husband certainly does not sound like he has a lot of good qualities. To write a letter to your wife pointing out all the flaws. And then you tell her she is spoiled and unthankful???? With friends like you who needs enemies. “Ms. Done” sounds like she needs encouragement and reinforcement and some love and self esteem. Nobody should listen to your words. I don’t know who is worse you or her husband.
To Done: My situation is not as bad as yours but I’ve had my moments. Luckily I don’t have children, so I don’t have to face the situation and struggles that you do. I have been married for 25 years. My husband doesn’t beat me. We laugh a lot, but sometimes I can’t put it into words but sometimes I too feel like I’m no longer in love with him (not all the time, just moments here and there). Other days I just go through the motions of breathing, working, and daily routine stuff. People who don’t know you or your situation will just tell you in an instant to leave but its not that easy and they are not standing in your shoes. Years ago mine told me I was dumpy and acting like an old lady (I was 43 at the time). He told me that when I sit and do cross stitch I look like an old lady. He tells me in an instant if I'm doing something wrong. Once time I said something to him and he came back with “you must have been a mean kid growing up saying hurtful things. I’ll bet you didn’t have many friends”. Talk about being taken aback I was too shocked to even think of a response to say. For the most part we laugh a lot, but there are days that I wonder why in the world I hastened into marriage and believe that I have done something horrible thing in a previous life and this is karma. But that’s just my struggles I will deal with.
On another note, I am a child of an unhappy marriage. I won’t put blame on either my mom or my dad. They were going through their times and my sister and I were too young to understand the troubles or feelings they were going through. My baby sister died when she was 16 months old from meningitis and I know that was a big strain. Anyway…my dad stayed until my sister and I were old enough to understand what was going on, but it was not a happy home with all the fighting. When I turned 16 my mom and dad sat down with my sister and I and told us they were separating. I think I probably shocked them both because I said to them “It’s about time”. I told them all they do is fight and if they are not happy together why are they staying together. I said as long as they were happy I was happy and if being separated means them being happy then I’m for it as long as I can see them both as much or whenever I want to.
You might want to talk about seeing a counselor together and maybe they can help work out the problems with you and your husband. I don't know your husband or what he's like. I'm sure he has some good qualities, but if he does not want to contribute and work it out and thinks he is perfect and does nothing wrong and that writing you a letter pointing out your flaws is an okay way for a husband to treat his wife and if he won’t get counseling and doesn’t want to keep the marriage together then there are always other options.
I think most kids are a lot tougher than parents believe, and if you decide to leave with the help of a counselor or someone (other than your husband) to talk to them I’m sure they will make it through just fine. I wish my mom and dad had divorced a long time before they actually did so they would have been happier. It was very hard to see them both unhappy.
On the other hand you could be like me Irish friend and dish back to your husband what he gives to you. I’d say you should write him a letter pointing out all his flaws and insecurities. Then when he doesn’t seem too happy about it tell him… “There see how it feels? You don’t like it do you”.
Anyway…I wish you the best and hope you find happiness soon, and please don’t listen to EvaEv. She sounds like a real piece of work. – Hey maybe she is your husbands sister. Sounds like two peas in a pod! Just remember….you have great worth, and you are a good person and you deserve to be happy and your kids will be much happier knowing you are happy.
I don't get it [2008-04-24]
People are worried about our tax dollars going to the tiny minority of people who receive social security fraudulently, but why aren't more people angry about the incredible waste of tax dollars that is the Iraq war? I'm genuinely interested. Is it because you don't see the everyday effect of the war here, but you do see Joe Blow with the fake back injury on his motorcycle? Do you realize how long our tax dollars will be paying for that quagmire? Why don't people get angry about that?
Polygamy [2008-04-17]
The whole concept of polygamy bothers me. It has a trickle-down effect on everyone involved. The children of these polygamist are victims. It is not natural to have siblings with 10-12 other mothers and 1 father, much less to all live in the same house. It's sick...
