UTIs....... [2008-05-28]
Our old male cat started doing this. We took him to the vet and they kept him to get a urine sample and sure nuf, he did have a UTI. Vet says males are extremely vulnerable for this and if they get clogged up in the ureter, the kidneys shut down. Now, this did happen to our yonger male, seemed perfectly healthy one day, disappeared for two days, came back meowing loudly and wouldn't stop. He looked like he had lost tons of weight in just 2 days. The vet checked his BUN and creatinine and said if he had been human, he would be in a coma....he didn't know how the cat was still alive. He had little crystals on his backside, a telltale sign of problems. They flushed him to clear out the crystals which had clogged him up and by the next morning, he was better but the vet couldn't believe he was still alive. He was in complete kidney failure in a very short period of time, so it would probably be a good idea to take him to the vet ASAP and get him checked, as these infections can take him downhill fast. He may very well have an infection, as cats do weird things when they are sick. They just can't tell us and react strangelyi.e., peeing in inappropriate places and will often pee on their owner's things.
In the meantime, you could try OdoBan. WalMart or Sams should carry this. If you don't get the urine crystals/salts that are left behind, the cat will always smell this, even if you don't. I have used it with good results. Good luck!!
What does a kidney infection feel like? sm [2008-04-08]
I have had UTIs....... distant past but never a kidney infection....wondering if I have one now though.
Good advice was given here. Suggest vet check-up for kitty needs vet check. sm [2007-04-24]
I Both of them started spraying inappropriately. Never had a female spray inappropriately other than in these instances. They go into spasm and can If it is a urinary problem, eventually you may see slight pink-tinged spray if it gets that far untreated due to the irritation from constantly trying to pee. One more thought is if the kitty is not sick, maybe the other cat won Maybe set up another box for her.
I'm so sorry for your loss! Mine also died of (sm) [2007-03-21]
acute renl failure, and was only a 4-yr-old Persian. His problem started with a urinary tract blockage that almost killed him. An amazing vet saved his life, but apparently the damage was already done to his urinary system, and a month (and $2500) later, he had to be euthanized. :( After reading about Persian cats' predisposition to UTIs.......age, and renal failure, and the role food can play, I blame myself for letting him have Meow Mix dry food - not as a staple, but just as a hand-fed, occasional treat. Especially since this cat would NOT TOUCH wet cat food of any type - another risk factor. I now have a new Persian, and this kitty gets ONLY Royal Canin Persian 30 dry cat food, and immediately after the recall I threw away any Nutro Max wet cat food I had. (I was lucky - she wouldn't eat it anyway). Their kibble is supposed to be a high-quality food. But since my little flat-faced kitty also finds the shape of Royal Canin easier to pick up and chew, in addition to the fact that it's formulated for Persians, that's the only dry food I'll feed her. For wet, she gets a mixture of Fancy Feast and Friskies Prime Filets.
Thanks for the info. about lilys (?-whatD
