The news does tend to be bad, true. Put your head back in the sand then. [2008-09-04]
However, see if you can stomach this....2 yr old toddler disappears for a month as her mother appears to party like a 22 year old with no children by the camera's eye. When grandma finally realizes something is amiss upon discovering her daughters abandoned car with the smell of decomposing human tissue in the trunk, the 911 calls begin. Casey Anthony is a deeply disturbed young woman who by all appearances seems to have done away with her beautiful little girl by means of a shovel and gasoline. The truly unfortunate person here is the child, Caylee, whose mother is a monster.
Okay, don't want to be a stick in the sand [2008-07-02]
We lived near the beach for many years and saw this one time too many. So, instead of being afraid of the ocean be more afraid of the sand. Please don't let your sons dig holes in the sand, at least not deep ones. We have seen children and teenagers have serious accidents or worse with this. The sand collapses into the holes and consequences can be fatal, so just heads up on that. It was also just on the news so I hope a lot of parents watched it. What seems like fun can turn quickly into a serious situation. It was just a known fact in our home..... no deep holes at the beach.
Sorry to be a downer....just want to make sure the boys AND parents enjoy themselves. Do have a good time though!!!

It looked like so much fun and so easy on TV that I bought some for my daughter's birthday last year. It's the messiest thing ever and it doesn't work the way it does on TV. She's only used it once or twice and outside at that, and I try to make her forget she has it. I should just throw it away.

I think she means [2008-07-03]
that with unstable dry sand, or even with sand of a wetter consistency, if a hole is too deep (over a child make whatever limit you feel safe with. There's nothing to fear if they keep it shallow.
This happened to a man I knew years ago with dirt, not sand, but I agree it would be possible in sand and probably easier done. He was working in a ditch deeper than he was tall, and when it collapsed on top of him, it killed him. I do believe that is what 'SM' is warning against.
Most beaches have bicycles [2008-07-03]
for the sand. They are seated like a go kart, sort of, and you lean back/recline, steer with your hands on levers at the side, and pedal out in front of you (like a pedal boat, for lack of a better comparison). I've always meant to rent one. It looks like major fun to me!
We're off to the beach and need some ideas! [2008-07-02]
I think I have most of my bases covered, but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas for the trip. We're off to Ocean City MD for the fireworks - woohoo!
I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5. We figure it We have a DVD player for the kids and they each have a portable video game to take. I think I have the drive down pretty well covered, but if you have anything to add, feel free.
At the beach -- we borrowed boogie boards from a friend for each of them to try. I We also got some sand toys for building castles. Any other suggestions here? I'm afraid 1 or 2 won't like the boogie board thing and get bored very easily with the sand toys.
We Anyone else know of anything at OC, MD that was really great for kids? Hubs and I have been there without the kids last summer, but really just enjoyed eating out and walking the boardwalk. I don We usually vacation at resort towns - like Disney and Dollywood - where there
Just looking for suggestions!

taking the kids down there. You probably don't have jelly fish that far north, but take a small bottle of meat tenderizer in case of stings. Familiarize yourself and the kids with flags and what they mean. Undertow is a big deal, never try to swim straight back in, let the current carry you until you can get past it and then swim in. Then again, you can get far away from each other without even noticing, so look out for that. I can almost smell the beach just reading your note. I hope you have a wonderful time. Sunscreen, of course, bucket to rinse off sand from feet and legs before getting back in the car. Been too long since mine were that size.

Gnat Issues [2008-06-10]
If there are from your potting soil in your house plants, try repotting all of your plants with new soil and adding a thin layer of beach sand/play sand to the top of the soil and only watering your plants every 3-4 days. If they are coming from your drains, try dumping some bleach and boiling water down the drains.
I hope this helps
Angie
have you checked how damp your houseplants are? Before you laugh..see msg. LOL [2008-06-09]
Where I work we had a problem with gnats. Somebody thought to Google gnats. Evidently if your houseplants are too wet, they live in the dirt. Or something like that...anyway..they went out and bought 100 pounds of sand and everybody with plants got some and put it over the top of the dirt in the plants. Worked like a charm. Hope this helps.

Your whole life is passing by and he has purposely isolated you from your family. He does not own you - you are not his possession. You have and have always had the right to come and go as you please and have your friends and family members come over any time but he has denied you that right. He is insecure and jealous of your sister. He wants you all to himself....he is treating you like a possession. He doesnno your sister can I feel so sad for you that you have let all these years pass letting him tell you what to do. It will be hard and there will be arguments but you have got to stand up for yourself before your life just slips through your fingers like sand. You sister should have been welcome each time she wanted to come. It sounds like he is afraid you might care about someone other than him. Please let your sister come and see you...tell him if not, you are going to see her and you are staying for two weeks! or three! Your life is passing you by and he is keeping you from living it.
I plan on going there this coming weekend! [2008-02-26]

My dog Fox [2007-12-30]
I don't know if anyone still remembers, but a few months ago I posted about my Pomeranian, Fox, and some health issues he was having, including patellar luxation, laxity in shoulder ligaments causing chronic dislocation, and bladder stones.
Fox was a great dog with a loving spirit and so smart that we couldn't even spell in front of him because he would figure out what we were saying. He was my best friend and the best dog I ever had.
With all his health problems, it was finally tracheal collapse which took him. This is a fairly common problem in small dogs, particularly those with short snouts. As you can see from the pic, he had a normal snout for a Pom, not the crushed-face look like some breeds, but he suffered from tracheal collapse nonetheless.
His trachea went from 3/4 (normal) down to 1/8 over a stretch of about 2-3. His symptoms were most evident when he was excited, but they had grown progressively worse, especially the last month or so of his life. When we saw the x-ray that showed the extent of the collapse, we felt we had no choice. Better he should simply go to sleep that get overexcited and smother to death.
I am saying all this to try to inform those who have small dogs to please check and see if tracheal collapse is one of the common ailments of your particular breed of dog. The Animal Planet site (link below) has a lot of good information on dog breeds, including common medical problems.
Unfortunately tracheal collapse is a very difficult problem to treat. There are surgeries available, but results vary depending on the extent of collapse, the age and overall health of the dog, and the skill of the surgeon.
If Fox's death can make at least a few people aware of this common problem, especially in smaller purebred dogs, then I will feel that it was not entirely in vain.

It's crucial that I get the right size for eachone of you.
Agree most don't abstain and teaching that only - sm [2007-12-20]
as a lot of schools do is very narrow-minded and totally unrealistic. I remember in 7th grade health class our teacher teaching us about different forms of birth control. They had it all laid out (no pun intended) on a board with an example of each method so we could actually see a condom, diaphragm, pill, iud, etc. No idea what they do there now, this was back in 77/78--I hope they are not burying their head in the sand and saying, don, and leaving it at that. Kids need to know that if they do it how to prevent becoming fathers/mothers at age 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, etc. Lots of peer pressure and some just have sex because their friends were. My friends were at 14 and generally had unprotected sex, one got pregnant at 15 but miscarried; I waited until I was almost 18 and after I graduated (the boys had big mouths and I did not want a reputation as a sleaze, which is what would have happened where I went to school). When mine start having sex I will put them on BCPs and hope they use condoms too (I will also tell them about my 2 best friends with herpes); and I hope they wait until they are at least 17 and ready for it and the responsibility of being sexually active. Guess I will find out in a few years. --as for the beginning of time, yes, the past is riddled with sex, just look at all the famous paintings, and stories of lovers, etc in England and France in royalty, etc. Goes back quite a ways
Your begging for sex is not a good idea! [2007-12-18]
What you have found and what you think might be true. If you care about yourself, it would be more than wise NOT to have any relations. He could be HIV+ without any outward signs and then could pass on to you. Pretending does you no good at all. You need to be proactive, don’t stick your head in the sand. If he is gay, then at least you would know. I would never knowingly have intimate relations with someone that I thought possibly could be gay or even bisexual for that matter. Too many good guys out there, don’t be begging!
I am sorry for your grief. [2007-12-07]
I lose my Belgian when he was only 6 to sand colic, had to have him put to sleep. That was over 15 years ago and I still miss him.
I have 3 old horses that are rescues. I am sure they would go to slaughter. But they are still rideable and very good with children. I love them so much. They are like big puppies and follow me all around their pasture.
Keep saving one at a time!

sand is very hard though....LOL - and since I was there, I heard they built up that city. I was there in the 70s but I remember what a GREAT time we had (a bunch of us) and how laid back it was.....bring lots of sunscreen/block as it's subtropical sun there as is S. Sorry to get back to you so late, but [2007-10-23]
Noah was lying under a bunch of bricks, etc from the collapse. He was not awake.
I would hate to see him go. He is a cute kid. I like him. Yes, only soap world but feels like real life sometimes.
One time when I was at a Home Depot [2007-10-23]
I had to use the bathroom. Not for the use you usually hope to only have to do in a public bathroom. I had a sudden need to really go. And go. And Go. Does anybody remember Silly Sand? Okay, so there is this large pile of Silly Sand -looking material in the toilet, the likes and quantity of which I have never seen before. I am so concerned that I hold all paper out so the only thing that will have to go is this strange substance piled high. So with trepidation I try to flush. Alas, it is a low-flow toilet, and all that happens is that the water itself swirls a bit. Nothing else moves. At all. Flush after flush, and the result is the same. NOTHING MOVES. So I take my gift-wrapped wad of paper and throw it out, wash my hands, and leave the scene of the horrible crime, except that I am laughing uncontrollably because it is so unlike me not to flush, but what I tried dozens of times.
I also found it so ironic that some wise guy who orders toilets for Home Depot thinks he is going to save the company sooooo much money, and now I hope the poor cleaning lady calls him up on the phone to explain why LOW-FLOW TOILETS DON'T WORK, nor do they save water when customers flush dozens of times and still can't get them to work.
addendum...Cornell [2007-10-06]
Joseph Cornell - Assemblage Art
Joseph Cornell (1903-73) was an American artist; born in Nyack, N.Y. He is best known for his shadow boxes made of found objects, maps, photographs, engravings, and other materials. Influenced by SURREALISM, these constructions are personally symbolic and evocative. (Biographical information copied from Ask Jeeves Encyclopedia 2001 - no longer online)
He had no formal training in art and his most characteristic works are his highly distinctive `boxes'. These are simple boxes, usually glass-fronted, in which he arranged surprising collections of photographs or Victorian bric-à-brac in a way that has been said to combine the formal austerity of Constructivism with the lively fantasy of Surrealism. Like Kurt Schwitters he could create poetry from the commonplace. Unlike Schwitters, however, he was fascinated not by refuse, garbage, and the discarded, but by fragments of once beautiful and precious objects, relying on the Surrealist technique of irrational juxtaposition and on the evocation of nostalgia for his appeal (he befriended several members of the Surrealist movement who settled in the USA during the Second World War). Cornell also painted and made Surrealist films. (This information copied from WebMuseum)
Preserved in Cornell a clay pipe and a diagram of the orbits of earth and the moon; images of a Medici Princess, each accompanied by a wooden sphere; and a translucent marble in a cascade of blue sand. Cornell fuses his work with poetic intensity, and a private and enigmatic sentiment, which together affect the viewer as if these very objects formed a recording of a burst of Cornell's sense of joy, or wonder, or love, or sadness.
Though now highly sought after by Museums and private collections, Cornellboxes, which he began to make in the 1930s were not originally conceived as being for such a wide audience. Rather, they were made as gifts for individuals sometimes living, sometimes dead, often people the artist had never met, but who in some way had touched his life. Not allowed to swim at Disney "beaches" though [2007-10-05]
They have little man-made beaches at some of the resorts, but you are not allowed to swim in the water. Stayed at several places at Disney... Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Caribbean Beach, Coronado, Dixie Landings, Dolphin/Swan... and it's the same at all. You can play in the sand, but you have to use the pools.
