when you're indoors.... so much banging, rattling, stuff falling, etc. But if you're lucky enough to be outdoors, as I was during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake (7.1 on the Richter), it's totally awe-inspiring. I was getting ready to wash my truck, and was carrying a bucket of soapy water across the yard. Suddenly the trees started shaking, and I thought a sudden breeze had come up on what had been a quiet, muggy day. Then I saw that the barn was swaying back and forth, and realized it was a quake. A few steps further, and it really started rolling. Had to hang onto the side of the truck to remain standing. Giant redwood trees were whipping back and forth so far that the tops of them were almost horizontal. We had a large pasture in front of the property for horses, and there were large waves in the ground, moving up and down with more than a foot and a half of vertical displacement. I couldn't help but laugh... it was pretty funny. Interestingly, all the horses turned and stood facing in exactly the direction of the epicenter. Once it stopped & I could let go of the truck, I ran into the landlord's backyard to look at the pool. The waves were big enough to surf on. A friend of mine who lived up in the Santa Cruz mountains was driving down a long, steep, straight road when the quake hit, and she actually saw a big wave in the pavement (the primary, or P-wave) coming straight at her. She stopped and rode it out in the truck. Another, very LUCKY friend, had been driving on I-880, and had just emerged from the covered section of freeway that collapsed when the quake hit, so wasn't caught in that awful disaster. He said it was weird... felt like he had a front flat tire, so he stopped on the side of the freeway to check his tires. As did several hundred other people! Imagine the whole freeway stopping, and everyone looking at their tires.... a 'Chinese fire drill', California-style. My mom lives directly on top of the epicenter of the Northridge quake of ྚ. It was a very sharp vertical quake, and it literally threw her out of her bed, lengthwise. Good thing, because the bookshelf/headboard part of the bed fell over and landed where her head had been on the pillow. I lived down there during the 1971 Sylmar quake, and I was trying to stay in my bed while it bucked like a bronco. My sister was in the bathroom hanging onto the sink & screaming. We had a jillion aftershocks from that one, which were more unnerving than the original quake. Every time we had an aftershock, another of my sisters started hyperventilating. That night, my parents were having the floor measured for new carpets. The poor contractor doing the measurements was so rattled by the shocks, not to mention everyone screeching and running out of the house when they hit, that he measured everything wrong, and the carpet they brought didn't fit. So a couple weeks later he had to come back and do it all over again. I was in Jr. College back then, and had a part-time job working at a stable. After the quake, when the sun came up I went up to the stables for work that day, and it was too dangerous to clean stalls with the horse in there during the aftershocks, so I had to take each horse out and put it in a corral while I cleaned the stall. Took me forever! I was up there all alone all day, and wasn't really worried, 'til I sat down on the ground to sharpen a pair of animal clippers. THAT'S when I realized that the ground was continually moving all the time.... jiggling very faintly, sort of like Jello. That's what got me feeling spooked. Another time, I think in the 80's, when I was at work we had a long, not-that-strong, rolling quake. I was in the basement using the copy-machine at the time. I'd had a migraine that day and had just taken Fiorinal for it, which made me feel a little strange sometimes. While at the copy machine, I was feeling really dizzy and strange, and hearing strange creaking noises. I'm thinking, 'Wow... I don't feel so hot!' The rolling continued, and I felt kind of nauseous. Tried not to look at the light in the copier, which has triggered migraines in me in the past. Noticed lots of people standing in the doorway to the Medical Records dept. and Radiation Oncology, and my foggy brain wondered why they were all taking their break at the same time. Still felt sick, and decided that if I didn't feel better within the hour, that I would go home to bed. Right about then, (with the floor still rolling), someone commented to me on how nonchalantly I was copying away during an earthquake! I was actually relieved to learn that's what the problem was, and not a reaction to the medication! :D

Last night on Nancy Grace they reported a lot of the women are SM [2008-04-17]
on Welfare, and that the young boys work construction jobs and then turn all the money over to the leaders of the compound. Someone earlier posted that these are members of the Mormon church, but my cousin, who died in 1999 was Mormon and her husband who visited our family 2 years after her death (they lived on the opposite coast) told us that the Mormon church absolutely no longer tolerates polygamy. He has been Mormon all his life.

I just read this on Oprah.com and it is really striking me. Thought it might strike some of you too. I actually have felt guilty when I was trying to exercise regularly and eat healthy....spending too much time on myself, too much money for healthy food. Women arenlet yourself go. Women believe itsacrificial lamb within their own families. This is a lie that we allow ourselves to buy into, but we need to wake up! The challenge for women is that they must re-language what it means to be a wife and mother. Being a good wife and mother means that if you don't take care of yourself, in the long run you are ultimately harming all the other people you love in your life. You won't be the only one who takes the hit.

As it is, I will use them if it is something I normally buy, but most of the stuff I get is not stuff they have coupons for, or it is for a different brand that I don't like. Florida doesn't charge sales tax on groceries and we don't have state income tax, but we pay higher grocery prices on a lot of things for that reason. And as much as people hate Wal-Mart, that is where I do my shopping because it is affordable and the prices don't change from week to week because of sales ads, which is mostly bumping up prices on stuff so that you really aren't getting that much of a deal anyway.

and you I I had a neighbor drop 2 elderly ponies offin my pasture under the pretense of needing a place for them to stay for a week until she sold them.I fed and cared for them for half a year before my husband called her and demanded she come pick them up. They went to a really good home at a therapeutic riding stable that same day, thankfully, but it turned out she was trying to get money for them all that time and HER husband didnUGH. I would have kept them myself if it came down to a choice between that and letting them go back to her. Blondie, men don Women are caretakers by nature. Ok this is the story: My husband is still friends with his first girlfriends family. This does not bother me. She did a couple of things to really disgrace her family when she was dating him but after a period of time he still kept in touch with them as we live in a very small community. When we met and got engaged they were all very kind to me and the mother even did the cake and flowers for our wedding. The ex is never around much so no big deal. Well this past weekend her great grandmother passed. My husband had known this woman for sometime and the mother asked him to come to the funeral and told me I was not to feel like I shouldnI. To which the ex rolled her eyes and looked at her HUSBAND. So we walked away. To tell you the truth, we didn't really care. Well we get a phone call about an hour ago from the exum we aren Well, knowing how immature the ex and her husband are, we knew they were behind this (plus we could hear them in the background). So my husband told the boy Look, it Well a few minutes later he gets a text message from the brother saying my mom can (which obviously is not true since we saw her Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon and she was obviously not mental). So my husband sent back a message saying Look, whatever issues your sister has with me and your mom having an ADULT friendship, she needs to take those up with your mom, but quit trying to start drama. Well a few minutes later the phone rings. My husband handed me the phone. Knowing how mad he was at the moment, I answered. It was the ex. She asked if she could talk to him, and I said No. This needs to stop right now, it She said well my mom is really going crazy and she can. She went on for about five minutes and I said fine, we won I'm just so angry right now! I mean this is high school drama! What would you do? My Pit isn't mean but he is protective if he doesn't know someone, mostly men. He doesn't like strange men to come around. But women he is fine with.

There are a few herbal supplements and other medications that women can take to stimulate lactation. I was on an infertility board several years ago, and there were adoptive mothers doing this. It is difficult and often does not work. There are also ways to simulate breast-feeding (special tubing connected to bottles that are situated in a way to get the infant to suckle) that can also help lactation.

I have not lived through a depression and hope we aren't headed that way but think we probably are. As far as saving, I clip coupons but only use them if the item is also on sale or something that I use regularly. I feel coupons just get you to buy the brand name product when you would otherwise save more buying generic without a coupon. I look for 2 for $ sales. A good one is cereal. When it is on sale I buy about 10 boxes. Same for oatmeal. Anything that I can buy more than one and get it on sale, I do. I add to my normal grocery shopping so its not like I am spending a lot. One time I buy my meat and higher cost items, the next I stock up on whatever I can. As far as meats and vegetables, the bulk of my list, I buy what is on sale. Lots of soups and stews now that winter is here because it seems to stretch things farther and the meat is a lot cheaper to buy. I do not take anyone to the store with me, cuts down on impulse buying. I plan all of my shopping for one day. I find that cut down on impulse buying too. If I know I bought a special shampoo or something for me at wal-mart, I will be less inclined to buy something special the same day at the grocery store. I have an area in the basement where I can keep extra stuff, especially toilet paper, canned goods, and a deep freeze.

Of these reports, 94% were reports of events considered to be non-serious, and 6% were reports of events considered to be serious. Based on all of the information we have today, CDC and FDA have determined that Gardasil is safe to use and effective in preventing 4 types of HPV. As with all approved vaccines, CDC and FDA will continue to closely monitor the safety of Gardasil. Any problems detected with this vaccine will be reported to health officials, healthcare providers, and the public, and needed action will be taken to ensure the public's health and safety. Non-serious adverse event reports The vast majority (94%) of the adverse events reports following Gardasil have been non-serious. Holidays [2008-11-12]
I too am dreading the holidays this year, especially Thanksgiving. My son committed suicide last year the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I want to do something different this year than last. My mom wants to go out to eat and my boyfriend wants to cook at home. I can never make them both happy. Christmas will be a challenge too as my boyfriend is laid off. Luckily, my family is small so there aren't a lot of gifts to buy.

I have wondered for some while if there is not a connection between HPV and prostate cancer. Given that males are infected at the same rates as females (with HPV), it should be given to boys too...who give it to us! Now, if there is ever a proven link between prostate CA and HPV, you will see it be mandatory so fast it will make your head swim. All you have to do it look at the procedures that are done for HPV infections of the cervix. I do them all the time. Girls at 16, 17, 18 in for their 2nd and 3rd conization of the cervix. The first one may cause an incompetent cervix, the 2nd one sure will and after a 3rd you won't carry a child to term. Did you know that a standard conization procedure removes the ENTIRE transformation zone and about 1/3 of the surface of the cervix? It does... The reason it is treated so aggressively is the extremely high rate of recurrence. Vaccinate your daughter, do it now, do not pass GO and collect $200. Just so you know, I see more HPV in the under 20 group, but there are plenty of married women in their early 20s with it and trying to get pregnant who have cone after cone.

There is enormous pressure put upon them by others to do something great, to perform mental tricks for the amusement of others, to prove how smart they are.Some become as insecure about it as beauty queens do about their looks - I remember when I was married to my genius, we watched a show about a child prodigy who could play great compositions at the age of 4. This show upset my ex, I could see it made him jealous and insecure, and nervous that he was not as great as everyone assumed him to be. Just like there's always someone richer, thinner, and better looking, there's always someone smarter too. Another reason would be lonliness. The smarter you are, the less you have in common with the majority of the population. The things that interest you most people can I think one purpose Mensa was created was so that they could find people to talk to on their own level. The pitfall there is most of them are so specialized in their own areas of interest they still don't have anything in common - the gifted musician does not want to discuss quantum theories with the scientist, they can understand it, they just aren't interested in it. In my ex He self medicates with substances to escape the misery of being in his body. Second, he He started abusing substances to try to be one of the cool partying folk, to fit in. All of his current friends abuse substances, but he at least has some friends now, that Third, the pressure to perform has caused him to give up. He was a computer guru before computers were cool. Once computers were mainstreamed to the general populace, and new software was coming out on a daily basis, he could no longer know it all. When he reached that crossroads, he panicked, gave up and dove into the bottle to hide from his insecurities. Ahigh IQ is often just as much a curse as a blessing. I am assuming the reason to abuse substance ispretty universal - the desire to escape reality for a while, then it becomes a habit. If a person doesnmay choose to destroy it instead.

had just read an article in the August Reader's Digest about a man being treated for throat cancer, stage IV. The name is The Farther Shore by Stephen Reynolds, in his 40's. There is an insert in the article that might interest you. HPV and You While few people with HPV get oral cancer, the number is likely to keep rising, says Maura Gillison, M.D., of Johns Hopkins. 20 million Americans are infected, with 6.2 million new cases each year. So far, there is no cure and just one test and only to detect HPV in a woman's cervix. Only a biopsy can tell whether an oral cancer is linked to HPV, but a test to spot high-risk oral infection in men and women and a vaccine for men are both in the works. What you need to know: Most people with HPV infections don't have any symptoms. At least half of sexually active men and women may become infected in their lifetimes. About 23% of women ages 14 to 65 have high-risk HPV, including 35% of 14 to 19 year old girls. Gardasil protects against up to 70% of the HPV types that cause cervical cancer, but it is unknown if the vaccine protects against oral infection in men or women. While most infections clear up on their own without patients ever knowing they were exposed, the consequences can still be severe. For instance, one type of HPV raises the risk of oral cancer of 3,200 percent. The virus speads through any form of sexual activity, and condoms can't fully protect against it. Having more than 5 oral sex partners boosts the risks of HPV linked oral cancer by 340 percent. I don't know why these dogs attacked. I don't know if these dogs were provoked or what. It is hard for me to imagine a dog just attacking for no reason. I can't imagine my dog ever doing that. I know other people who have pits as pets and they have never had a problem with attacks. I think every good owner should know their dog inside and out and know their little quirks. Now I could see a pit bull attacking an owner who was sometimes mean to them or mistreated them in some way. I could see them getting enough and attacking. A lot of times I think that is really behind attacks and we don't know that. Still a dog never should kill a human. When you own a pit you have to have the utmost respect for the fact they could kill an animal or human if they wanted. They are physically capable but most are not emotionally capable. My dad had a couple different pits and I have learned my great grandfather had pits for many years. He would only have one at a time. He took his pit hunting hogs and the pit would hold the hog and my great grandfather would put a rag over the dogs nostrils to cause him to have to let go of the hog and he would do whatever it was he then did with the hog. I didn't ask details. But what I am saying here is this was an man who was in close interaction with a pit and was right there when they attacked hogs and he intervened and had to pull them away from the hog by cutting off breathing from the dog so he would let go. He was never attacked or bitten. My dad said that was never an issue. The dogs knew he was the master and they never got out of line. If these were as unstable as some are made out to be and some may be but if they were really that unstable they could have attacked and killed this man. But he never had to worry about this. All of his pits loved and respected him as their owner. Now one deciding factor could be he never mistreated his dog. Never ever. He always treated them good. I think this may be why his dogs never showed him anything but kindness. Again there are some dogs (pits and others) who are unstable. They are just flat out mean and would do anything. But not all dogs are like this. My husband often says when people say aren't you worried CJ could hurt you one day. He says no I KNOW in my heart with everything in me this dog would die before he would hurt one of us. This pit is the most loving affectionate dog I have had the joy to own. Don't ask me how I know.. You would have to know CJ.

A lot of people on here I am sure do not own a pit bull. It is hard to know the breed when you aren't around them on a day to day basis. I would just like to share some traits of pit bulls. Pits are robust. They are active and love to play. They are a smart breed of dog too. I guess you could say they are roughnecks. They will do anything to please their owners and want to be a big ole lap dog. Oh yeah they will and mine does (all 70 pounds) climb up in your lap wanting to be nurtured. LOL. If I had to describe their personality I would say first of all contrary to all the media hype and hysteria of pits, the dogfighting community (by the way I do not condone dogfighting) did not breed pit bulls to be human aggressive. They wanted a dog they could work with in the fighting arena and not have to worry about these dogs attacking them or other people watching this sport. (which is unscrupulous but just trying to explain this is how they were bred). A lot of pit bulls are so happy on meeting owners friends they don that some people who get them worry they won't make a good guard dog because some happily greet strangers. The protective instinct a pit has usually won't surface until they are about a year old. I would say they want to be the center of attention. They are very self confident dogs. I have to say pits can be funny. One reason is pits have some of the most expressive faces. Sometimes though you may have a perfectly nice pup which will grow up to be mean because he was encouraged to be mean. Raised to be mean. If pit bulls could choose their owners instead of the other way around then I would say a pit would choose an owner with high spirits and a joy of living. Good owners of pits are able to handle their dogs. A pits character traits seem to be contradictory in that they are strong but sensitive; rowdy but gentle; outgoing but devoted; easily fired up but highly trainable; mischevious but sensible; energetic yet serene; peaceful but always alert. All these describe the pit bull.

happened with a Great Dane or a Great Pyranees or Lab, etc.? Are you saying these dogs aren't capable of killing or mauling? I don't think the old man was their master. I think the pits belonged to the daughter and her boyfriend. Unfortunately this happened and it shouldn't have. These dogs for some reason chose to attack. I don't know or you why. I would like to know but we will never know. I just don't believe that dogs attack for no reason. It don't make it right for them to attack but I think there is always a reason. Something provokes them. I guess the daughter and boyfriend thought the dogs would not hurt the man but something happened there that day and a dog should never kill a person. But something happened. These dogs were not quite as stable as thought to be or either the man wasn't stable enough to be staying in the house with the dogs. You are right you never know what the dogs will find to be threatening and something must have made these dogs feel threatened. I take every precaution I can with my pit bull. He is not mean or vicious but he has that protective instinct for his family and that is what I have to protect others from. But so do German Shepards, Dobermans, etc. My dog also looks for me to tell him when it is okay. When someone is okay. When we introduce him to people we tell him it is okay CJ. He/she is nice. And we let him sniff them and then he will go have a seat and just chill. He don't want to hurt anyone he just wants to make sure nobody hurts his family. As soon as he knows we are fine he is fine and goes on about his business. But that is only if a visitor wants to meet CJ and then we will let them but otherwise he will stay in his fenced in back yard. I try to be as responsible as possible.

How about the surgery was $6,000.00 and the PT was $125.00 a visit for about 8 weeks. Only the best for his dogs. Now, he's contemplating putting him down because he still can't walk. The other one had pancreatic cancer and surgery and just had an eye removed due to cataracts. This totals you guys are giving aren It's a shame these vets charge so much.

nursing home decision [2008-11-09]
I am living this as we speak. My father died in March of 2007. My mother became bedridden in June 2007. I had hospice come in to assist, Home Health and Hospice to be exact, and they are wonderful. They actually have their own private nursing home-type facility in the next town over. With hospice, on an occasional basis and when a bed is available, they offer the caregiver a 5-day respite at their facility. After momma went for the first time she was offered a bed there and I immediately accepted. The facility is very small and only for the 3HC clientele, with only 12 private rooms divided into 2 sides - one side with 6 beds for the terminal clients and one side with 6 beds for residential clients. Momma was able to stay on the residential side for 7 months; however, her condition was stable and Medicare would no longer pay the fee. Momma came home after that and I have again been her primary caregiver since January of this year. She is contractured, bedridden, and rarely speaks or opens her eyes. I do have a sitter that works during the daytime hours M-F so that I can actually work, run errands when I need to, and get the kids to and from school because otherwise I cannot leave the house at all because momma cannot be left alone. I feel blessed to have found this line of work not quite 6 years ago. I have a 4-1/2 year old and a 6 year old and momma to care for so working from home has been a lifesaver. I, too, made the promise to momma that I would not put her in a nursing home and I will stand by that. Itcare most of the public places provide. It's a tough decision to make - even tougher if there aren't funds available like there are in our case (thanks to my great daddy) to pay for the sitter to come in and assist. But when the sitter isn't here, the kids and I must be. For the most part they understand, but sometimes they really just want to go somewhere or to the park or to McDonalds and we just can't do it. It's a huge personal sacrifice for your entire family to make to keep a parent at home. The decision isn't always just personal, though. It can be financial, too. You will make the right decision for whatever your situation is. Whatever you decide to do, just know that your parent respects you enough to make that decision for them and that they love you. We had all sorts of vet bills from previous dogs, and then were hit with health bills of our own (both DH and I), and insurance that didn't turn out to be very good, and suddenly the reality was that we couldn't afford to care for our 2 dogs responsibly. We didn't have these dogs very long, but I'll be heartbroken if they aren't adopted.

It is very unnerving and no matter how much I would get done, I always found myself adding to the list of things to do! Below are my solutions to help me, some the same as other posters. Make a list. Put EVERYTHING on the list. I find a sense of calm and accomplishment on crossing off even the smallest task from the list. Use a calender. Break it out into 1 item (or 2 if they are small) per family member. Leave the general house cleaning (bathrooms, dusting, etc) until a few days before. If anyone doesn't help or gives you problems, well cut out a task that you usually do for them. Make them do their own laundry, if you pick up after them just toss it in their bedroom or somewhere they will notice making it an inconvenience for them, not you. Or if necessary, skip making dinner a few nights. Do pizza 3 nights in a row and I guarantee someone will notice and ask why! Before you start holiday decorating, eliminate as much other clutter/nick nacks as you can. I find that if I get rid of some of my day-to-day pictures and do-dads, coffee mugs, etc. hanging about that it makes cleaning much easier and really lets the special holiday items shine. Afterall, everyone has probably seen your normal daily stuff some time in the past anyway. After my decorating is done, I put these daily items in the holiday boxes so they are easily switched out again when the holiday is over. If you have a mother-in-law or aunt or someone who is overly helpful, let them help! I didnthat that he will help me every time. lol He knows she) If you have someone that you know likes to bake, ask them to bring something that you have had in the past. Tell them you or one of the kids just love it! and have a craving for it. It will be a compliment and they will look forward to bring it for you. and most importantly, think of what it is like when you go to someone elseShe I'm sure you probably do and remember these people think the same thing. They really don't care what your house looks like and I'm sure being that they aren't having many visitors, their house isn't that clean for the holiday either.
