Yeah, the True Blood series is basically like soft porn... [2008-11-18]
definitely not advisable for a 14 year old!!!
YEAH baby!! Me too. sm [2008-11-18]
About 10 years ago I bought a Honda HX with prototype gas-efficient trannie, light wheels, no frills. That puppy would still be with me if not for the prototype trannie pretty much fizzled on most of the HXs but I milked mine for as long as possible.
Ex had a Prelude, same year (99). He loved the car and took great care of it. Gas was killing him though (uses it to drive and travels a bit). He wanted to keep it in the family so he sold it to me. I drive about 5000 miles a year, if that. Amost 300,000 miles on that one and what a dream it is!!!
He bought a new Civic. Another SWEET car.
My son has a 1990 Accord, bought it used with less than 100,000 miles about 3 years ago. We've put some money into it, mostly cosmetic and just catching stuff up, but it runs like new.
My Civic was actually built in US, so I didn't feel too guilty, but how many years have US automakers had to see the writing on the wall? I'm sorry, but I like keeping a car forever. No car payments are great. Honda fits that mold.
Oh, yeah, it's very nice and improved over the first models, of course. [2008-11-17]
It's roomier on the inside than you might expect. We bought the basic version, and it still has plenty of features. When gas was over $4.00 a gallon, my DH, who drives 50 miles round-trip to work each day, was saving $200 a month. Gas is lower now, but we still are saving money. Plus you never have to replace brakes on a Prius, and here in PA, I don't need to pay for emissions inspection since it burns so clean. We get our emissions sticker for free. There are a couple of other little perks like that with a Prius. And, of course, I just think it's fun. :)
Oh yeah...sm [2008-11-14]
He is extremely laid back. He loves EVERYBODY! We have to watch him when we take him to the park cuz he however, I don't think I'll ever have another one. We got lucky with cody, but my mom had one and she had MAJOR problems with skin, allergies, hips, all sorts of things. They are just notorious for having big health problems. So, after cody I think we're gonna stay away from the bullies. Wonderful dogs, but just not very healthy. It's sad.
Oh yeah, [2008-11-11]
Velveeta is much harder to grate, as I'm sure you can imagine . . . LOL!!!
Yeah they say nuetering helps...sm [2008-11-11]
Mine is so sweet I haven't even nuetered him. But there have been some offers to breed him to females and because he is such a wonderful dog I would like to keep his bloodline going with other family pets who are inside family dogs.
Now I can tell you if the dogs were bullying my child such as the ones in San Francisco they would no longer be inside and would probably be kept in some kind of kennel. I would not even trust them to stay in the yard. They would have been under lock and key. I know personally that you can't keep a pit bull locked in a room and expect that he won't get out. I tried that when I left my house because I didn't want him to be free roaming around the house because he is nosy and may get into something or chew something. Well he tore the door down and got out. I was so mad. But I learned that you can't keep them in a room and believe they can't get out. He was about a little less than a year then but now he is so good and don't get into things when I leave him. I guess the puppy in him made him do it. But I cannot express enough that mother should have never kept those pits in the house if there was the slightest problem with her son. Those must have been some mean pits. This irresponsible breeding makes me so mad. I don't want my dog to be some mean killing machine. I want a sweet baby. That is why I thought I would never own a pit but he was such a sweetheart as a pup. He was and still is real laid back.
oh yeah, sign me up for my two drunken brothers [2008-11-11]
After what happened at last years The drunker they got, the funnier it was to point out all of the ways I No money, raising my kid by myself, rusty car .... the list went on. Nothing better than driving home crying on Xmas Eve. No thank you very much to that again, which I have made very clear.

My daughter is a few months younger than Celine's son. She has her hair buzzed by her request. (I use the 3/4 inch buzzer guide.) She is tops of her class, very respectful, and loves to help out her teacher in class. She is well behaved, but she does pick on her little sisters sometimes like any kid. She's a really good kid. When we go to the nursing home to visit my husband (he's a nurse), the residents typically assume she's a boy because of her hair, which annoys her. Otherwise she is as girly as can be, much girlier than her mom with long hair!
I figure it's just hair--who cares as long as the child can handle the hair issues? Eventually there will be much bigger battles to be fought than the length of hair.
Go Celine!
Yeah, you're delusional. nm [2008-11-03]

Good luck, and stick it to them!
Explaining a couple of things sm [2008-11-14]
I studied IQ as part of my Masterget you because your sense of humor is probably well off the beaten track. You probably lack social skills from an early age. Your peers would play childhood games while you preferred to try to improve upon the toys they played with. In school, you didn't have to work very hard in most areas. It all came very easily. You didn't learn how to learn, which is a very valuable skill. You probably have a low frustration level and when something doesn't come very easily, you are prone to giving up. Because you see the world in completely different terms than people of more average intelligence, those same average people call you crazy or mentally ill and tell you that you should be locked up. You don't fit in and despite the higher intelligence, you are remiss to know how to accomplish the feat of being more ordinary.
I alluded to this in my previous post. I have the unusual combination of being very artistic, creatively gifted AND being rather intellectually gifted. Yes, I did fall at the 99.6% percentile on the Wechsler. I know what it means and I have a firm understanding that indeed, that score suggests that I possess more intelligence than 99.6% of the people who have taken that test, and only 0.4% are smarter than I am. It has been a life-long struggle to fit in. I am too cerebral for artistic people, and too artistic for intellectuals. I literally have no one I fit in with. I have learned to tone myself down to make it work. I didn't say dumb down, I said tone down. That means I don't intentionally talk over the heads of others and I won't cram what I know down anyone's throat.
I have had those people in my life who have been jealous of me. I learn quickly if it is artistic, musical, creative, the written word, history and philosophy. I struggle with math. I took piano lessons 10 years ago. I had 40 of them and had never played the piano before. In 40, 1-hour lessons I could play the Moonlight Sonata in piano solo (not a dumbed down easy version). Most people cannot do that. There many other things I have done in a similar fashion, but this is an example for you.
You ask why I am an MT if I am so smart. I make very good money as an MT and I enjoy the challenge. My photographic memory comes in very handy too. I often stop and read up on a disease process I am transcribing about, so that I know what it means. Show me a word once and I'll know it forever. It makes my job easier for me to accomplish.
This all sounds like I am blowing my own horn, but I am merely trying to explain. Being highly intelligent wonreally smart is not only not helpful, I think it is the root of the housecleaning issues in my life.
In short, it is just great to have a good ol' high number and in the end it makes absolutely difference...if you don't count the fact that people with IQs over 150 are 3 times more likely to be depressed and commit suicide than the average population. People who are 125 to 140 are the most fortunate. They succeed in greater numbers in school, in a job, in life. They are very bright, and likely have learned how to learn. They are more likely to persevere in the face of frustration and challenge.
It really isn't all you think it is.
Well you do have a point there... [2008-11-12]
I'd love to be waited on, pampered, spending their money...yeah! But I'd probably be the one on the other end who gets the crappy, nasty family. couldn't handle that...

had just read an article in the August Reader's Digest about a man being treated for throat cancer, stage IV. The name is The Farther Shore by Stephen Reynolds, in his 40's. There is an insert in the article that might interest you.
HPV and You
While few people with HPV get oral cancer, the number is likely to keep rising, says Maura Gillison, M.D., of Johns Hopkins. 20 million Americans are infected, with 6.2 million new cases each year. So far, there is no cure and just one test and only to detect HPV in a woman's cervix. Only a biopsy can tell whether an oral cancer is linked to HPV, but a test to spot high-risk oral infection in men and women and a vaccine for men are both in the works. What you need to know:
Most people with HPV infections don't have any symptoms. At least half of sexually active men and women may become infected in their lifetimes. About 23% of women ages 14 to 65 have high-risk HPV, including 35% of 14 to 19 year old girls.
Gardasil protects against up to 70% of the HPV types that cause cervical cancer, but it is unknown if the vaccine protects against oral infection in men or women.
While most infections clear up on their own without patients ever knowing they were exposed, the consequences can still be severe. For instance, one type of HPV raises the risk of oral cancer of 3,200 percent.
The virus speads through any form of sexual activity, and condoms can't fully protect against it. Having more than 5 oral sex partners boosts the risks of HPV linked oral cancer by 340 percent.
Sorry this was so long, but this is the most info I have seen on this and the numbers are, I think, staggering. I notice it does not address the vaccine in Australia you mentioned.
I'm a dog lover, and most dogs love me. - sm [2008-11-10]
I can be walking down the street, simply make eye contact with one and smile without saying a word, and the dog will usually rush up to me, wagging his tail like crazy and acting all silly and lovey-dovey.
In the past, some of the absolute sweetest dogs I'd ever known were pits & rotties. But that was in the ྌs, before the big 'gangsta-dog' thing became popular. Then people started breeding these dogs more for a surly attitude than for good temperament, and it seems to be a dominant trait that's getting passed forward, even when unintended.
So fast-forard to 2 weeks ago. I was out walking in my neighborhood, and was coming up a long flight of sidewalk stairs that go up the steep hill I live on. Halfway up, I saw a big brown pit bull standing there looking at me. I had seen him running loose on my street earlier in the day, and wondered whose he was, but then forgot about him.
He had an aggressive body-language that I didn't like. But I'm not afraid of dogs, and continuned on up the steps, and talked to him nicely as I reached the top. But then the dog totally went off, and began barking, growling, and making charges at me.
I knew to stand my ground, and first tried sweet-talking him. Didn't work. If I tried to slowly move away from him in any direction, he'd come around and try to come in at me from behind. There wasn't a soul around.
I tried scaring him off, but that only exacerbated the problem, so I decided to just stand there and let him do his thing. 20 minutes later, he was just as aggressive as ever, maybe worse, because his charges were coming closer and closer. The only 'weapon' in my possession was a single can of cat food in a plastic bag, that I'd walked down the hill to the market to buy. Considered whacking him with it, but didn't want to be in that close to him.
Turns out the owners were in an apartment right across the street. A couple finally came out and called off the dog, stating Oh, we didn (I doubt that - the dog had been out all afternoon.)
Anyway, I told them I'd call the sheriff and/or animal control if I ever saw him out again. When I got home, I called animal control anyway, and filed a formal complaint, so that if he bit anyone in the future, there would already be a complaint against him, and he likely would not be released from the shelter. Animal control said they'd follow up with the owner, which hopefully they did.
In the meantime, I did 2 things: I programmed the sheriff's phone numberinto my cellphone, which I now slip into my pocket whenever I go out for a walk. Good thing to do, anyway. The other thing is I went to Army-Navy Surplus, and bought a cannister of professional-grade pepper spray. Not the wimpy, .02% 'dog-repellent'. I doubt that would stop a pitbull. I got the 15% stuff that will bring a 200-pound, raging crack-addict to his knees and keep him there for more than an hour. That goes into my pocket, as well. Now I can walk & bike with peace of mind.
Meanwhile, those pitbull owners should consider themselves very lucky that their dog went after someone who knows dogs, is not afraid, and didn't RUN. If a timid woman, or worse, a child, had come up those steps that afternoon, the resulting attack might have made the 6 o'clock news that night.
There are probably still some gentle pits left out there, but I think their numbers are declining because of the current fashion statement of being a 'big bad gangsta, with my big, bad gansta-dog'. They want their dogs to intimidate people, and then they wonder why they can't rent an apartment or get homeowners insurance to cover dog bites. In some cities you have to post a $30,000 bond in order to keep one. It's little wonder that unwanted pits and pit-mixes are clogging up our animal shelters. I feel sorry for the animals, but if I were adopting, I wouldn't want the financial liability of owning one.
Let's get to know pit bulls...sm [2008-11-09]
A lot of people on here I am sure do not own a pit bull. It is hard to know the breed when you aren't around them on a day to day basis. I would just like to share some traits of pit bulls.
Pits are robust. They are active and love to play. They are a smart breed of dog too. I guess you could say they are roughnecks. They will do anything to please their owners and want to be a big ole lap dog. Oh yeah they will and mine does (all 70 pounds) climb up in your lap wanting to be nurtured. LOL.
If I had to describe their personality I would say first of all contrary to all the media hype and hysteria of pits, the dogfighting community (by the way I do not condone dogfighting) did not breed pit bulls to be human aggressive. They wanted a dog they could work with in the fighting arena and not have to worry about these dogs attacking them or other people watching this sport. (which is unscrupulous but just trying to explain this is how they were bred). A lot of pit bulls are so happy on meeting owners friends they don that some people who get them worry they won't make a good guard dog because some happily greet strangers. The protective instinct a pit has usually won't surface until they are about a year old. I would say they want to be the center of attention. They are very self confident dogs.
I have to say pits can be funny. One reason is pits have some of the most expressive faces.
Sometimes though you may have a perfectly nice pup which will grow up to be mean because he was encouraged to be mean. Raised to be mean.
If pit bulls could choose their owners instead of the other way around then I would say a pit would choose an owner with high spirits and a joy of living. Good owners of pits are able to handle their dogs.
A pits character traits seem to be contradictory in that they are strong but sensitive; rowdy but gentle; outgoing but devoted; easily fired up but highly trainable; mischevious but sensible; energetic yet serene; peaceful but always alert. All these describe the pit bull.
I was so grossed out when, in Nip/Tuck [2008-11-05]
Sharon Gless's character killed that guy with the teddy bear filler! It's getting so crazy, it was hard to keep up with that last season. I guess they're starting up again in January.
Yeah, Charmed is where I first crushed on him. Although it was Leo at first.
erythemic, crepitance, in spite of (s/b despite), and I could care less sm [2008-10-26]
The first was an FNP, says it all.
Despite...regardless of something. In spite, like what in angry? She has pain just to spite her leg? What does she have to spite her leg about?
I could care less? Oh could you now? I could NOT care less is the proper term. I mean, if you COULD care less WOULDN'T you care less? I am sure you CAN care less, but you MAY not!
Yeah, I can care about anything, but I may not bother.
I know it is very harsh...the thing is I have asked her so many times (sm) [2008-10-21]
and the things she says are hurtful to my children. I am not petty and it is not over something small like candy or just having a difference of opinion. The things she says to them really scare and upset them. She let them watch a woman giving birth on TV once when they were very young...I had not explained yet to them exactly how a baby gets out...they were both very upset. She also has told other family members that she believes my husband is a child molester and that he has made my son, who is 11, gay. My husband is not a molester. My son likes girls. He has no idea she ever said that, but if he ever heard that she did, it would probably be very devastating to him. Each time I have sat down and tried to explain to her that we donoh, yeah, that She kept the kids while I was gone overnight this past weekend and I specifically asked her not to say anything that would scare them. She let my daughter invite a friend to sleep over. She told them all about ghosts and demons and how she once saw a demon in her closet. The girl sleeping over got scared and cried to go home at midnight. My daughter called me on my cell at midnight crying because her friend was scared and going home and she was also scared. At what point do I draw the line?
I agree with you [2008-10-03]
I do believe how a person raises a pet is the number one factor of how an animal behaves. Not all dogs are cujo dogs. One time my DH and I were taking a walk and some guy was out walking his pit bull. I didn't think anything of it, went over and bent down to pet it just like I would have any other dog, and he was so adorable and loveble, licking my hand and loving the attention he received. I never even once gave a thought that the dog would have attacked me for no reason.
I didnyeah, go ahead and try it, your fingers look tasty, you don. HA HA, but to everyone else in the family he was adorable and wanted to be pet and held. I had an aunt who had a poodle that was mean as anything. So all dogs are different.
I think its horrible that bad people have trained dogs to do bad things, but nobody should judge a dog by its cover. Me particularly, I am a cat person, but everyone in my family has a dog or two.
I too would find it upsetting for people to judge one breed of dog who you find loveable and adorable just because of somethings that have happened with other owners. I remember awhile back Rottweilers were getting a bad name.
I'm glad there are people like you out there who will give a pet the love and attention they need. Thank you.
Husbands and money [2008-09-19]
I keep a spreadsheet of our income and expenses for a two-month time span. That way, I know in advance how much, if any, extra cash is left over on payday and can plan for any unusual expenses that might be coming up. Every couple of weeks, I sit hubby down in front of computer and together we look over where the money is going and how much cash we have until the next payday.
I update it every other day as we spend pocket money, unexpected expenses etc., and keep him informed if we are broker than expected. It's never richer than expected unfortunately!
I also take care of all the bills, etc., so it is easy for him to fall into a state of ignorant bliss. But I am an organized computer nerd at heart, so I like playing with the numbers.
But I think if your husband had concrete numbers of your financial situation, he would realize what a difference that $3 can make.

I understand you - thanks for your post [2008-09-18]
It is a hard thing to go through (both for the person going through it the and person who lives with the person going through it). I think its at this time we ask ourselves - is there more to life, what is our goal in life, etc. You do sound like my DH. We have talked many times about left-sided and right-sided brain people. I think you are probably like him (artistic, sees things in picture form, and doesnlive a certain way (that is get the job, build your retirement, buy a house, have kids, etc, etc and headaptable. I go whereever and make things work. I have the attitude of whatever happens happens, nothing is forever, and adapt. I guess maybe because Iis this all there is to life, I doubt it was a crisis - if so probably the shortest midlife crisis in history (lasted about 5 hours). HA HA HA.
On the positive side of it we have talked extensively and I know herock for him. Yesterday he told me I'm lucky becauase I know what I wanted and stuck with it (MT school and MT jobs). I told him the job does get very tiring and there are a lot of times when I don't think my fingers will type another word (yeah, so I come to this website and type more HA HA HA). Today he joked and said maybe I ought to go back to school and get retrained doing something else because at least I stick with it.
Anyway...hopefully he'll find something. He did start going over his resume so it may be a step.
Apparently it's national cheeseburger day today..sm [2008-09-18]
or that's what I'm being told by the kids.
I did see a sign in Kwik Trip saying it was, so I guess I have to believe them:-)
Of course, they also told me it would be against the law if we didn't have cheeseburgers, and I certainly can't set a good example for them if I break the law. Yeah...not buying that one, but I'll make cheeseburgers anyway:-)
Don't get me wrong... [2008-09-18]
I love my hubs with all my heart. I would never re-marry and I know we would stay close friends and probably be neighbors if possible. He's been married before so I know how nasty divorces can get and hateful people who once loved can be towards each other BUT I can understand what you mean by truely love and cannot imagine your life without them. At the same token I look at cheating as a deliberate lie and never a mistake...yeah, in many aspects of life I am a plain and simple harda$$. There are just some things that are unexcusable in my book and this is one. I feel like morally the decision would be made for me. Despite love and feelings, he put my life in danger (STDs, a freak that goes psycho, etc. - you never know) and I won't put up with it for a second. JMO. I respect yours and would of any friends of ours who made the same.

Also read up on it, as the numbers many doctors use as the normal range really isn't accurate.

Yeah, unless you become anorexic and not eat. I guess that would keep you skinny. I am sure it affects people differently.

i almost always fill out comment cards and call the 1-800 numbers on receipts to report great service. those people deserve it and they are few and far between.
I had trouble believing - sm [2008-08-05]
My daughter was four when we moved into our house and within months she was insisting she was seeing lights, orbs, etc. I admit I heard footsteps but told myself I was hearing things. Anyway she eventually, about 3-4 years later, had actually seen and knew the names of two - spirits? ghosts? I was still skeptical - overactive imagination, etc, until she and I saw something in our living room at the same time that I could not explain any other way about two years ago. She's 16 now. Yeah, I would believe.
PS - my philosophy about most kid behaviors like wanting to sleep with parents has always been - somewhere between now and college she'll stop . . sucking her thumb, crawling in bed with me, get potty trained, etc, etc, etc. It puts things in perspective. And here we are on the brink of college and the only thing left is she's asking me to tuck her in at night. I'll do that till the night she gets a husband to take that delightful task over for me!
