featherbed...long article [2008-01-21]
Ms. Evelyn is an extraordinarylybright little young ladywithreal sharp wit andhumor. HereCat ************************************************* Here and There: New mattresses can't beat good featherbedBy Evelyn Richardson Featherbeds were once a luxury when compared to a hard felt mattress or a pallet on the floor. They were a definite step up from a straw tick whose stuffing became pulverized by the time the next threshing season came around to provide fresh straw. We never raised geese, so when we dressed chickens, we gathered their soft breast and underside feathers to fill our featherbed. There was no concern about dander and feather allergies because we had not heard of such. Not only was the featherbed luxuriously soft but also it was warm. As we lay on it, the fluff came up around us to give us a snugly feeling.Of course, when the season changed to summer, we didn't want to sink into the featherbed. It was put underneath the mattress next to the open coil springs for storage until the hot weather was gone. When this switch was made, we took all of the bed equipment outside for cleaning. The sunshine revitalized the featherbed and made the mattress smell sweet.Dust and lint were thick on the springs and it fell my lot to deal with each coil individually and get them clean. My mother bought a cleaning tool from the Stanley salesman that was especially designed to fit the conical shape of the coils and I welcomed it as a godsend. These were the days before the miracle of running water and the availability of a spray hose to wash away the dust and lint. We propped the springs against a tree trunk and I began the painstaking task. There was a knack for making up the bed when the featherbed was on top. We lifted, patted and punched the higher spots to redistribute the feathers evenly. When linens were changed each week, we flipped and rotated the featherbed before tucking the clean sheet tightly around the sides.Blankets and quilts were added and a counterpane was the top decorative cover. Then to make the bed appear perfectly level, we took a broom handle and smoothed the surface, much the same as we would level a measuring spoon of salt with a spatula. We were not allowed to play on the bed when it was made up or to sit on the edge because there was no way to repair the dents without starting from scratch.Today we have scientifically engineered sleeping foundations, some with pushbutton controls, to give our body the support it needs when we are at rest. Once my father had a severe back problem during the days when doctors made house calls. A new doctor in town visited him and declared that the first thing he should do was to get rid of the featherbed. My father was both angered and insulted by that young whippersnapper. I suppose he took the pills prescribed, but he kept right on sleeping on the featherbed and eventually got better.Water, foam, air and all sorts of materials fill our mattresses here in the twenty-first century to give us a wide choice. And they cost considerably more than striped ticking that we sewed to make our own featherbed.

High school yearbook article - opinions please...sm [2007-12-12]
Hello, Our daughter is on the yearbook staff for her high school. Tonight she showed us the picture they made of the yearbook staff and I commented that one of the students looked very upset and depressed. She said that she I told my daughter that I was mortified that they think it is acceptable....especially in this day and time where another student may see/hear her rantings and if they I'm also concerned about this student not being happy and they're just letting her write about it. Do you think I should be concerned and should express my concerns to the yearbook advisor or just leave it to the advisor to use good judgement and accept the windfall if there is any after this is published?

Schedule with kids [2007-10-13]
I was in the same position. After a lot of years I figured out what works pretty good for me, and my company allows it, so does the hospital. I put my son to bed. I often nap then until about 1 or 2 a.m. Then, I work until 6:30 or 7 a.m. (already got 5 hours in!). I take him to school, and in the morning if I am not tired, I will run errands, work on the house, do something fun. I usually take a nap around noon and then I will work after he is done with his homework from 4:30 to 6:30 (my hubby makes dinner).. that is 7 hours plus 1 hour off for lunch. I also then work on the weekend a few hours to get 40 when I need it, but that is usually in the early morning, so I can spend some time with my husband. Plus I get to spend time with him anway, and after he falls asleep, then I work. It sounds very complicated but it really isn't. And you actually get time for yourself at least to relax for a time, instead of working 8 hours straight and then chores and kids, etc. Good luck! Remember it is tough to be a woman who does too much :).

(Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson) PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her guardian angel. The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as Angela, was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements. Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled. I don Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse. I don The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend. You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid, Jones said. He was like her guardian angel. After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene. The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners donAngel. Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament. It Jones said of Angel's possible owners. For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most. I don Angela told NBC2 News. For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot. The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake. It he said of the Gulf Coast town. And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired. had just read an article in the August Reader's Digest about a man being treated for throat cancer, stage IV. The name is The Farther Shore by Stephen Reynolds, in his 40's. There is an insert in the article that might interest you. HPV and You While few people with HPV get oral cancer, the number is likely to keep rising, says Maura Gillison, M.D., of Johns Hopkins. 20 million Americans are infected, with 6.2 million new cases each year. So far, there is no cure and just one test and only to detect HPV in a woman's cervix. Only a biopsy can tell whether an oral cancer is linked to HPV, but a test to spot high-risk oral infection in men and women and a vaccine for men are both in the works. What you need to know: Most people with HPV infections don't have any symptoms. At least half of sexually active men and women may become infected in their lifetimes. About 23% of women ages 14 to 65 have high-risk HPV, including 35% of 14 to 19 year old girls. Gardasil protects against up to 70% of the HPV types that cause cervical cancer, but it is unknown if the vaccine protects against oral infection in men or women. While most infections clear up on their own without patients ever knowing they were exposed, the consequences can still be severe. For instance, one type of HPV raises the risk of oral cancer of 3,200 percent. The virus speads through any form of sexual activity, and condoms can't fully protect against it. Having more than 5 oral sex partners boosts the risks of HPV linked oral cancer by 340 percent. Sorry this was so long, but this is the most info I have seen on this and the numbers are, I think, staggering. I notice it does not address the vaccine in Australia you mentioned.

HPV vaccine [2008-11-10]
I have been saying for months and months that the Gardasil vaccine is a complete hoax. I read articles from leading doctors and pharmacists that said the Gardasil actually increases the risk. Here is an article that I urge everyone to read. http://www.newswithviews.com/Howenstine/james170.htm

Heat Surge electric fire place [2008-11-09]
I posted a few weeks ago about an article I saw for a Heat Surge electric fireplace with a wooden mantle built by the Amish. Well I received it about 1.5 wks ago and I must say that it is absolutely beautiful! It is virtually noiseless, I seriously cannot hear it running at all. The brightness of the flame is adjustable and it has a low and a high heat setting. Best of all, it works! It does exactly what I had planned on and keeps the back of my house at a reasonable tempurature during the night so I do not have to worry about keeping the wood stove in the front going full blast all night. The kids turned it on one evening when they were playing pool and they actually ended up turning it off because it got to warm. So in my opinion, if you want something that is beautiful, well built, safe, and does provide more than enough heat for a room or two (mine is between the family room/kitchen which is all one long room) then it is absolutely worth the money.

SAVE ON HEATING BILL! [2008-10-22]
A friend told me about these and my husband brought an article home today. They are Heat Surge Fireless Flame miracle heaters produced by the Amish. I will try to attach the link to the web site so you can check them out....dondo not have claim code to see where in the country you are and get the phone#. You only have 48 hours to order, and mine started yesterday. I sure hope he wanted me to order one, cuz I did!! We already have a wood stove but this will help me not have to get up to put wood in it all night long to keep it going since I have not turned on my house heater in 3 years and refuse to!!!!

I have to disagree with some of these points [2008-10-22]
I do know that my natural gas bill, which is what I would be heating with, was WAY more than my electric bill. So I totally disagree with the statement that gas central heat is cheaper. My last heating bill 3 years ago (which only included gas) was $450 for one month. What you posted says it uses .12 cph, which would equal approx $90 for 30 days, I could put 5 of them in my home before I reached my last gas bill! Is this for everyone, no. Should it be used as a constant source of heat, probably not for most households (some single people might get away with it). Really the only thing I saw in the article you posted against this heater was the cost of the heater. I am willing to pay that because I happen to want something that looks nice. This has a 30-day money back guarantee and a one year warranty. Where I live anything that you can do to turn the thermostat down, if you use gas, will save you money. I need to heat my house 24/7 for about 7 months out of the year, if I had to pay for natural gas I don't know what I would do.

Well I'll let you know how it turns out [2008-10-22]
Since I ordered one, we'll see. Talked to hubby and he said he had talked to somone who actually has one and they think its great, they also heat with wood and use this to supplement at night, that's why he left the article. I don't want to give up my wood and convert because its free and I love the smell (hubby cuts me hickory!) but I know someone who has a corn stove and they love it. I love my wood stove and wouldn't go back to central unless forced to, its the only time in my life I've been truly warm in the winter!

Midnight shift husband for 18 years now......sm [2008-10-21]
It will get better....eventually. It took about 8 years for my hubby to realize I can't work midnights like him because we have two kids to raise. Believe me, it is very difficult at times, but it does get better. It might help if you have a calendar in full view for him to look at, so he knows what type of schedule you are on regarding work, kids activities, etc. Once he sees it in writing and realizes all the pressure that is on you, he may begin to understand. Believe me, night shift is not easy for the marriage. It takes great patience and understanding of both parties for it to succeed! I sleep with my golden retriever at night now!

make sure they are legit... [2008-10-15]
I agree with the poster who said to be careful about the one you choose, because they are not all reputable, which is what I said in my previous post. I have heard good things about CCCS and they were listed on the Suze Orman website. They charge a minimal fee of $30 per month for their service and will help you with nonsecured debt. They will put you on a budget and make arrangements with your creditors for a reasonable payback schedule that you can afford, based on your income. They have me paying $300 a month for all of my credit card bills---on my own I was paying close to $500 a month and could not afford to. They will also attempt to lower your interest rates with your creditors. It is a good last resort, as long as you research and pick a reputable company. I always Google research before I sign on with anything.

My neighbors [2008-09-14]
and I have talked to her quite a bit. Her husband is also out of town most of the time so she is on her own. She has home schooled 3 kids total. I believe she is down to 1 now. From what she has told me the biggest thing is to have a strict schedule, just like the children would at public school. They still have to wake up early mornings and keep school hours. They donschool with desks for more structure and privacy. She also said when her husband is home he enforces the homework to give her a break. She has also said there are a lot of home schooling websites and organizations out there. She does field trips and everything like normal school would. Apparentnly they are easily found online. Hope that helps but sorry I can't say from experience.

We're sort of a "have to" case, too. [2008-09-13]
My son was having problems with bullies and stress migraines to the point of being sick, so we've prayed about it and started this year homeschooling. It IS a LOT of work. I am pretty much a single mom most of the time, with my husband on swing shifts. There's about one week a month that he's home any amount at all. So, my son and I are in this together, just me and him, and I am trying to work and spend time with him. The teaching is really very minimal because he is pretty much able to teach himself...very gifted. I spend at least a couple of hours with him daily though, for interaction, and I spend a LOT of time planning, doing records, etc. I am thankful to be an IC...no schedule to keep, but on the other hand, I'm not getting MY work done until late most nights. I hope we fall into some sort of routine and I get to do more of my work in the daytime soon. It's sure hard to get up and get going when I've had about 5 hours sleep. Thanks for the reply.

Talk with the teacher [2008-09-10]
I would schedule a meeting with the teacher. Tell her your daughter handles the tasks concerning her with no problem at home and ask what exactly is going on that has her concerned. I would also talk with your child to see if any of her comments shed some insight into how things are going at school and the type of interaction with the teacher.
