I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this. Exercise. sm [2008-01-23]
Okay. I am overweight by about 30 pounds. A week ago I got back on the treadmill and started walking/jogging for about 20-30 minutes - 5 days a week. This is week 2. I Will get on the treadmill in a few minutes. I haha Don I know it I have NO desire to change my eating habits. None. Zilch. In fact, don I don I don I do like an occasional Coke. I like chocolate. I otherwise eat healthy, but until Jan of this year I have done NOTHING in the way of exercise for years. Just kept having kids and sitting on my bum.
When can I start seeing results and do you think that I can see results by working out this much and NOT changing my eating habits. It I can And what makes it worse (the eating part) is when I fail (which is EVERY time) I beat myself up afterwards and feel worse than before. With this jog/walking thing, I feel GREAT. I feel more energy already and I actually am enjoying the time alone doing it.
Anyone have experience with this?
You can but no one else can? Exercise those rights [2008-01-20]

Get some exercise [2008-01-17]
It will help tremendously. I start to get tired if I go more than a day or two without running on my treadmill or hitting the weights at the gym. It will help tremendously. As someone else said, it might not be a bad idea to get your thyroid checked out.
I sit on exercise ball .... sm [2008-01-10]
and I balance just fine with foot pedal. I dont Sometimes I switch out my chair and my ball. Just depends on how my bottom is feeling. I too sometimes sit with my leg folded under my other leg while working, but that I have really bad vericose veins (that's another story!)
good luck!

an elliptical machine and a Pilates machine. Don't really have anywhere to walk in our area (too rural, too many crazy drivers, and bears!) so that is out of the question. I have The Firm DVDs, have not tried it yet. Would love some suggestions to get rid of the jiggle and saddlebags!

How much exercise have you had in the last 3 weeks? [2007-05-25]
The kind of exercise where your rib cage actually has to expand as far as it can go?
That kind of exercise causes relaxation, and relaxation is an antidote for anxiety attacks.
I was also helped by learning relaxation with biofeedback and I also take Effexor. Not everybody can take that though.
exercise question [2007-05-11]
I am 48 years old, been sitting on my rear for years doing MT. I have exercised for years, but always sporadically. There is something called the MDR1 gene...sm [2008-07-03]
MDR1 (multi-drug resistance gene). Itfound in herding breeds likecollies, aussies, etc., and somel other breeds as well. It The only way to know is to test the dog to see if has the gene or is a carrier. (I think that just involves a cheek swab.)
Were these dogs related to each other? I wonder if that gene was the cause, or if the vet was negligent, or if it was just terrible luck. It
Beforesurgery,Italk to the vet and make sureI understandwhat kind of drugs and anesthetic they use, and how the dog is monitored during anesthesia and while recovering. Just like with people, there is always a risk. Some vets have all the fancy, high tech equipment for monitoring, but others relymore onan assistantto do it manually. I prefer There are not nearly as many vet anesthesiologists in the vet world as there are in human medicine.
II I just read about this gene when I was helping a friend research the breed. Her first aussie died at a ripe old age of about 14 yrs old, I think, andshe has one thatyear old and has had no health problems that I know of. Isorry for your friend. To have a dog die after a flea dip of all things... and then another after routine teeth cleaning. There is always a risk with anesthesia, but we get so used to thinking it
She took her current Aussie to the vet for neutering. When he came home he was lethargic. They took him back and the doctor put him on an IV to flush his system of any anesthesia?
This s/l either the dog had a bad reaction to the anesthesia, or the vet went overboard and gave too much...
Yes, I made a huge change. [2008-06-22]
I work outside at a garden center now. The money isn't great, but it's hourly and fair, I'd say. No more being prevented from working because of equipment failure or low work. I love getting out of the house and working with people. I make a difference where I work. Surgical tech is something I looked into, but I don't think I'd like early hours or being locked in one position holding retractors for hours. I might fall asleep standing up. Interestingly, I read about a trend of having OR rooms warmer, which the surgeons HATE, but it seems to be better for the patients. When I was a secretary in the OR, I froze, but I wasn't standing under hot OR lights. Another consideration is whether you are affected by smells. It can be stinky work. The nurses complained particularly about all the cauterization smells during breast surgery, more so than intestinal/rectal surgery, oddly enough.
Problem is, it wears off after a while if SM [2008-05-20]
you take it regularly. I agree, good for stressful times, but on a regular basis, the good effects wear off quickly. That's why people get addicted to it.
Please, not accusing you or anyone else. It just doesn't work on a regular basis, but occasionally is great.
Actually, regular exercise for over 45 minutes, raises endorphine levels and that also works. If I spelled anything wrong here, too bad! LOL!
I told my son if he didn't feel [2008-05-18]
comfortable talking to the counselor, then I would call her. I think it would be good for him to talk to her, though, because: A) He has seen it first-hand and might better be able to answer her questions should she have any; and B) It would be a good opportunity for him to exercise compassion, which I certainly try to encourage my children to do.
Thanks [2008-04-30]
This is a little late in the thanks - totally forgot I posted this message (been so busy with work). My sis is not tall - 5ƌ'. She's trying to lose with WW. Nephew does do exercise type stuff (walk the track, ride his bike, etc). Sis and DH said with all the exercise he should be losing but he's not. They question him and he says he is not over-eating. They have packed his lunch every day for him, told the place he works at not to allow him to eat in cafeteria (he is closely supervised). I have told her about the reports I type for amputations and deaths of people who die from diabetes complications. I have told her that she really needs to talk to her doc cos he can't keep going on like this. Right now she is having much more problems with him right now than his eating (she can't handle too much at once). Right now she's battling his attitude. He's quite upset because they were cleaning out his room and he's got so many bloomin toys (mostly power rangers) they are trying to donate some to kids who have nothing, but he doesn't want to let anything go. They are all his. Second problem is they are finding porn material lying around his bedroom. They've limited his I'net use and he can only get on the I'net if they are awake and around, but somehow he's getting by them. Sister was yelling at him she's sick of getting disgusting emails with filth (he's so stupid (well stupids not a good word, but that's what she says) he uses her email id). So...I'd say they've got their hands full with him and I'm glad I'm not back there.
Sitting [2008-04-29]
I have three things to sit on - a rolling stool with a tractor seat, a straight chair with or without back pillow and an exercise ball. In this way, I can vary my posture, stay more alert, and even get a tiny bit of exercise with the ball.
Suggestions [2008-04-28]
Hey Kaydie, I used to work with special needs kids and had one with a similar weight problem though not nearly as severe. What your sister needs to understand, and if she gets defensive tough give her some tough love, is that if your nephew develops diabetes and then goes off on his bike and eats whatever the heck he wants, he can do more than lose a toe, he can die. A guy I was friends with in middle school, died after we graduated from a hyper/hypoglycemic episode when we were like 20. He was short and skinny!
As far as suggestions, the pediatrician needs to update his malpractice insurance because there sure as heck is something wrong. As far as South America sizes, we Now, as far as his job is concerned, if this is under adult programming, tell them he is under dietary restrictions andcan only eat vegetables or what have you. I assume he has some sort of superivision at work regardless because of his disability. Do not let him carry around pocket money if he is going to insist on using it for food.
Get him involved in something that equals exercise like Special Olympics or something. Riding his bike is great but not if he Give him errands to run like going to a post office or the library, things that don Get him a paper route that he can ride his bike for. Have your sister turn it around on her and say that her doctor told her that if she doesn Get him to help develop healthy meals for mom and help shop for them. Get that cookbook that shows how to sneak healthy foods into meals for kids.
Above all make sure your sister understands that you love her and your nephew and want them both around and healthy for a long, long time. Heck tell her a friend of mine who is 6 feet 2 and weighed 225 at one point started having knee problems at 26? He has lost 40 pounds and guess what? His knees don It makes a huge difference. I don Good luck to you!
While I don't proport smoking, I'm not sure [2008-04-23]
asking this information on an insurance form should be allowed. We already deny many Americans affordable health coverage because of obesity and other medical problems. What Asking how many foods we microwave or how long we talk on a cell phone (supposedly these cause cancer, too)? We already ask the obvious questions - smoking, drinking, exercise. They have you weigh in and ask every question imaginable about your family medical history.
How are we supposed to obtain coverage if we I was watching Celebrity Fit Club on TV and I looked at some of the people on there and thought what Come on America-- this is just another way to keep us from having healthcare coverage. No, I

Are you prepared to list every risk [2008-04-23]
How far do you want it to go? Fill out a huge form (that they paid someone to design instead of paying claims), that lists every supposedly avoidable risk imaginable, including amusement park rides, occasional bowling, how often and when you take a walk, if you might be a passenger on the back of someone Then they can spy on you (instead of paying claims) or encourage your fellow employees to be whistle blowers, catch you doing something that you said you wouldn How often do you eatjunk food- are you prepared to be completely honest and accurately estimate how often you intend to do that? How often do you exercise - and what if you say you will but for some reason don Prepare to lose your coverage over it because they can prove you a liar deliberately cheating the system. That's what this is coming to!

A sad modern parable [2008-04-21]
If this werenmight be funny....
A SAD MODERN PARABLE
A Japanese company ( Toyota) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile. The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing. Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma>They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. I think I can dig up some WW materials... [2008-04-21]
I have been to WW before, and I still have info about the point system and the brochures.somewhere My house clutter reflects my body clutter, so it may be hard to find them, but I have a couple ideas as to where they are. I I absolutely hate to diet and exercise. This is all very depressing.
Women aren't on their own listof priorities (sm) [2008-04-15]
I just read this on Oprah.com and it is really striking me. Thought it might strike some of you too. I actually have felt guilty when I was trying to exercise regularly and eat healthy....spending too much time on myself, too much money for healthy food.
Women arenlet yourself go. Women believe itsacrificial lamb within their own families. This is a lie that we allow ourselves to buy into, but we need to wake up! The challenge for women is that they must re-language what it means to be a wife and mother. Being a good wife and mother means that if you don't take care of yourself, in the long run you are ultimately harming all the other people you love in your life. You won't be the only one who takes the hit.
Just to play devil's advocate... [2008-04-15]
there are many women who LIKE to play the victim, poor me, I sacrifice all the time role. IMHO, this is a lot of psychobabble designed by women to further their status as the downtrodden gender. No one canMAKE you not take care of yourself first; you choose to do that to yourself. It doesn something will be neglected in the long run. Deal with it, do the best you can and don't be a doormat. If you fill your face with junk all the time and are fat and don't exercise, that is nobody's fault but your own. If you try to do it all and don't ask for help, that too is your own fault. Women today have it much easier than other generations did. My mother-in-lawr raised 4 boys, worked on the family dairy farm, cooked 3 meals a day and cleaned every day and never thought twice about it. We are spoiled compared to that!
Exactly - it's taking the time that makes me feel guilty too sm [2008-04-15]
Solution they are saying is to go to bestlife.com and sign a contract with yourself and then Oprah has a bestlife challenge with diet and exercise and other tips and an online journal, etc. In the past when I have exercised regularly, I found that I felt like I had more time, because I had more energy to get things done. So I am trying to get back to that again.
I have to take care of myself and learned this the hard way sm [2008-04-15]
I used to push and push and push. I tried to convince myself I only need 4 hours of sleep a night, that I CAN work two jobs full time or nearly so, that I could not go to bed with a messy house. It came to a point where I nearly died because I got too sick and had a near-fatal drug interaction.
The upshot of all that mess was that I have SLE and later found to have celiac disease. My kidneys leak protein, my face has started to scar with the rashes I get. I can At times the fatigue seems neverending.I didn
I am on chronic steriods and they help, but they are not a cure. I am better, but I am not well. I have been working some odd hours over the past couple of months and it has come to a point where I am sick and having trouble regaining some ground here. I will make it, but it is going to take time and I am feeling impatient.
Because of the celiac, there are all sorts of things I can I have to have a low protein diet so that I can preserve kidney function (the drugs don Oh yes, meal preparation and eating is a nightmare! The special celiac flours for bread making are pricey and hard to find, and most of the bread is awful at that.
I end up spending a lot on food, and I am a cheapskate. I have to sleep at least 8 hours a night and watch every thing I do. I end up feeling better, but I HATE having to do so much for myself just so I can function!!!!
You have to take care of yourself along, not have a wake up call in your late 40s. If I had been better when I was younger, I would not be in such bad shape. Hindsight is 20/20.
Also, I have email friends who are online only (sm) [2008-04-14]
People I have never met and don't really give a lot of personal info about myself - have to be careful. But there are MANY lonely people out there. I have met lots who work at home and just want an email buddy to talk with some during they day. You can answer or post an ad in the platonic section of Craigslist. Also a few years ago I met one of my now best friends through Exercise Buddies. com. She also works at home and we both wanted a walking buddy - it worked out great.
