Any other Maroon 5 fans out there? [2008-11-05]
I took my 16 year old daughter to their concert this summer and came away a bigger fan than she is! Their music talks to me in a way no other has since the 60s (would you believe I Now I devour everything I can get my hands on about them. Great, great band!

Grey's Anatomy fans...did you see? [2008-11-04]
The character of Erica Hahn was dismissed and this week will be her last episode. I think the rumblings were that maybe ABC wasn't happy with the Erica/Callie relationship.

Any TrueBlood (HBO) fans? [2008-10-24]

Baseball "why" question [2008-08-09]
Watching the Olympics reminds me of this question....Can anyone tell me why we have a game that is called The World Series but only American teams compete and play????????

If he can play baseball with his vision... [2008-07-19]
he can play football with it. You need to see better for baseball. Trust me, they don't have to be tough to play football. The first couple times they get hit, you can see how scared they are. Then the actually realize those pads really DO stop it from hurting...and some of our littlest ones turns into the most aggressive ones. Football is hard work though, and the training is more difficult than the other sports. My husband coaches baseball, basketball and football for kids (12 and under). They do work a lot harder and they're pretty exhausted after football, but if it really is to the point where they are all throwing up and crying, you have bigger worries. You need a new program director!! I know that's not what you're asking about, but that's just not right for kids that young to be worked that hard. How can they possibly learn to love the sport from that?

Survivor Fans???? [2008-05-08]
What I loved every minute of it. While I I This has been the best season yet of Survivor. The blindsides have been awesome! I still can't believe Eric was that stupid to trust 4 women.

Ok, Idol fans, how did you like last night? [2008-02-21]
I was blown away by the little Filipino girl (sorry have not learned their names yet) and also the 2 after her, 10 thru 12. They actually saved the best for last I thought. Once again this year feel the girls are better singers, for the most part, than the guys. I do not care for the nurse/rocker girl at all and also on the male side the Peter Frampton look alike guy. The girls rock again this year!!

Exactly. And these Obama fans need to give it up. I mean, we don't like sm [2008-02-19]

Any Nancy Drew fans? [2007-12-23]
When I shopped for one of my nieces at Circuit City, I stumbled on a Nancy Drew computer game. I don We loved those books when we were kids, but I don My niece is 9, and youngest recommended age is 10. But it was only $20, so we got her one other little hand-held game that was only about $6, so at least she can play that right away.

Any other Bob Dylan fans out there? If so (see msg) [2007-10-11]
can you name one of your favorites by him? I must have dozens of favorites, but I would have to put Lilly, Rosemary and Jack of Hearts right at the top five. I also love Forever Young. Birth name is Robert Zimmerman.

I worked for a hospital where the major baseball team [2007-10-10]

My daughter, at that time teenager, begged me for the address of a certain big time player who went on to marry Hallie B but no, no- was not gonna put my job on the line. I knew DD could easily turn into your stalker girl!

Does she like baseball? sm [2007-07-17]
For my 16th, my parents took2 of my friends and me to a pro baseball game. The B-day deal includedboxes for all of us with goodies (edible and nonedible) and my name on the scoreboard. The seats werenotgood, buta Montreal Expo outfielder (Andre Dawson) yelled out happy birthday to me. Best of luck!

I have baseball memories with my Dad [2007-07-10]
My favorite activity as a child was stick/hose ball. My Dad would cut up old hose and pitch them to us. There were some woods behind the house, so it didn What fun!! We used to go crabbing in the summer and built gigantic snowmen in the winter. I was in the middle child with an older and younger brother, so I learned to play a lot of football, baseball, and yes, believe it or not, we used to play guns! Fake ones of course!Times have sure changed!

Congrats to you :-) sm [2008-10-31]
I love my Rays. Been going to games (live 2 hours away) and watching them for 6 years now. I'm just so thrilled we got this far. It was such a treat. But what really bothered me were statements from the media like, 'the series no one is watching, but no one will forget.' Pegging this series as 'not a sexy World Series.' It's ironic that now that there is drug testing (so no steroids) that the 2 teams who made it, one of which hasn't won since 1980 and the other who has been in the cellar since it's inception in 1997, are deemed dull and a boring series... I'm not sure about the Phillies, but the Rays were one of the only teams who had no players on the 'steroid list' last year. I'm insulted as an avid baseball fan and as a Rays fan that the sports media continually poo-poo'ed this series. So... the only way a WS is good is if we watch pumped up steroid playera and/or players who make an obscene amount of money (one NY Yankee player equals the entire roster of the Rays). I watch my Rays every day they're on TV or when I'm able to get to the games in person (love the Trop and the catwalks LOL), and I've watched every playoff and WS for as long as I can remember, no matter who was in it. I just pick a team and have fun. I'm happy for the Phillies. It was a good, clean series and their manager has a lot of class. I'm sad we didn't win. Next year seems so far away, but I really had a great ride this year. Again, congrats to you!!

I was at JFK stadium back in 1980 [2008-10-30]
In fact, I went to the 6th game of the WS and saw it happened from the last row of a 700-level section at the vet. I went with some guy from my econ class at Temple. I was a freshman and he was not a baseball fan. LOL. In 1980, the parade took place the very next day after the game. Professors told us that they were not cancelling class and that we were expected to show. Right. I lived at 18th and Snyder back then, so I was sitting down in JFK by 9:00 a.m., waiting for the parade to arrive. I had the time of my life. What's really cool is that my youngest son is now a freshman at Temple, and he was told the same thing. Classes are not cancelled, and he is expected to be there. I told him to go to the parade. No one will be in class, and who knows how long he'll have to wait to see this again. Wow, the Phillies win the World Series. I think I feel the earth shifting on its axis!

How about some ideas for a warm supper? [2008-10-28]

STOP!!!! BETTER TAKE A CLOSER LOOK [2008-10-22]
This is what I found when researching this: Just Wondering asked the question; Do the Heat Surge Fireless Flame heaters that the Amish sell really work? It is being advertised in the local paper (The Herald-Dispatch,Huntingto n , WV ). That it is a Miracle Heater. Saves Money: uses less energy than a coffee maker. Stay really warm and slash your heating bill all at the same time. It uses 1500 watts. It is 5119 btu. My question is. Is this really a Miracle Heater? Should I buy one for every room in my house and turn off the heat pump? 10 months ago Report Abuse by John R Member since: July 12, 2007 Total points: 1256 (Level 3) Add to My Contacts Block User Best Answer - Chosen by Asker The ads (which are all over the country) are very misleading. 1. A coffee maker uses a large amount of electricity for about a minute. Itmiracle heater uses less electricity than a coffee maker DURING THAT ONE MINUTE. But you're going to have the heater running for a lot longer than one minute a day. So it's going to cost you a lot more to operate than a coffee maker does. The heater will cost you around 12 cents per hour to operate. The average cost of electricity in the U.S. is 8 cents per 1,000 watts per hour, so 1,500 watts costs 12 cents per hour on average. This is true for ANY 1,500 watt electric heater. 2. The ads say that the heater produces an amazing 5,119 BTU (a measure of heat energy), but ALL 1,500 watt electric heaters produce 5,119 BTU. If an electric heater was 100% efficient, it would convert 1,500 watts of electricity into 5,120 BTU of heat. All electric heaters are nearly 100% efficient, and this has been true for decades. The miracle heater is no more efficient than any other electric heater. 3. The website of the heaterzone heating. See the Saves Money section of the website (www.heatsurge.com). This is true, but it's also true for ANY electric heater. The problem is that a lot of people don't like to have just one room of their house warm while all the others are cold. You DON'T want to heat your entire house by putting an electric heater in each room. That would cost you far more than central heat. Gas central heat, for example, would cost around half as much as having an electric heater in each room. (The exact amount varies depending on what part of the country you live in.) If you want to get one heater and move it around with you, that would be cheaper than central heat, but you can get a lightweight 1,500 watt / 5,119 BTU electric heater with a fan for under $100 at your local hardware store, while the miracle heater costs $350 including shipping. The heater at your local hardware store won't have the Amish-made mantle and the fake flames, but it will work just as well. Make sure to get one with a fan, since it will warm up the room faster, although fans can be noisy. 10 months ago

be careful if you have environmental allergies [2008-10-21]
my son has severe environmental allergies and we were told to never hang out his laundry as pollen can attach itself to the clothing and make his symptoms worse. We are also to run an air conditoner, not use fans and never open the windows to help cut down on allergens. So much for frugality in our home!!! :(

Was beginning to think it was must me [2008-10-21]
We were old-time Folger's fans until recently, and I told my husband to change the type of coffee we were buying. Folger's tasted different, almost a bitter taste. I too used bottled water, and we changed our coffee pot too. It didn't work, so I am glad to know it was not just my taste buds that were off. It also smelled different.

WE DID IT! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! [2008-10-16]

Just a thought....... [2008-08-27]
We lived in an area where tree frogs and lizards were a daily thing, all over the place. Our dog loved it though. They usually plant themselves in areas where there are more abundant insects. Is there a light nearby? That will draw the insects as well. Put in a buglight which will cut down greatly on the bugs attracted and hopefully cut down on the lizards and frogs as well. But the tree frogs hung out all over our sliding patio door regardless. Of course, my husband and I are big fans of both, because once you start seeing them diminish overall, that's a bad statement for their environment, so we were pretty tolerant anyway. I do understand the falling on your head though. Just shake your door good before going outside! Good luck!

Can a kid with really bad eyesight play football? [2008-07-19]
My boy, Eddie, is seven years old. He has retinitis pigmentosa and gradually worsening decreasing vision. His vision without glasses is 20/200 and best corrected is 20/60. He does pretty well with baseball, especially after he had the bilateral rectus recession surgery and now both eyes are working together. Tomorrow, however, is supposed to be football sign-ups, and I He I talked to some moms today, and they explained to me how grueling this five-day course of conditioning is. They described to me that most kids throw up from being overworked and go home crying. Doesn He Any advice, football moms?

You're lucky (or he's lucky) the parents care [2008-07-09]
I have 2 kids just down at the end of the block from me and their parents don They Apparently, they They like to mouth to any adults when they whiz by on their bikes. Is it wrong that I Their mom doesn When we first moved into town this past fall (short-term thing while we They put on a good act. After a few weeks of them coming to our house and pretending to want to play with the boys, we soon realized they were freeloaders -- wanted to eat everything in my fridge (without even asking first) and then wanted to play our computers or video games (without my kids). I put the klinks on that real fast. After that, they started treating my kids like crap. I told my boys as long as they didn Their mom even had the balls to come looking for them 1 night after they didn It was 9 o I couldn Just a few weeks ago, the 2 perps beat another kid with a baseball bat at the ballfield. The cops were at their house quite a bit, but I see they I can't wait till we move back out to the country!

I would not force him to stay if he hates it - sm [2008-07-08]
that much. That said, I am a GS co-leader of a Brownie and Junior Troop. Both my daughters are in GS, 1 loves it, the other wants out. Since I would have to take her to the meetings anyway, I am making her stay in. The only part she does not like is the meetings, which is twice a month for us. She loves the activities we do which are not too much 4 booth sales a year (cookies and nuts), a campout a year in cabins at a GS camp, and usually 1 or 2 other fun activities with other troops, skating, baseball game, that sort of stuff. Despite my 1 daughterdone with it I will pull them both out, or is she wants to continue I will just find another troop for her that has a Cadette group. ---These boy scout leaders need a bit more compassion, and need to allow the boys to call home once a day if they want to. No you don't want some kid calling home every five minutes. We had a girl like that in our troop, a real pain in the butt. She was a bully, constanting hurting others or bullying them, and all the other girls could not stand her, but we had to deal with her and teach the girls to nice to her, etc. in hopes that this girl would get better. Never happened. I am happy to know she is not coming back next year. She made every event a drama about her, calling mom constantly on campouts, changing her mind about leaving every 5 minutes about having her mom pick her up early, crying, fussing, generally just being a pain if she did not get her way. (She has emotional problems at 11, on drugs for depression, anger mgmt--parents were finally forced to get her help after she tried to choke someone 2 x at school--private school, and they pay handsomely to keep her there by donating stuff all the time to the school, the girl will never get kicked out though she should have been expelled years ago for her violence)--- but that is me off on another tangent. ---But the men leaders have that caveman thinking, that the boys have to tough it out to become men, and all that garbage. They definitely need to clean out their campsite, rake it out, build a nice fire during the day....we never have unattended fires at night....even when I tent camped for my training. In theory the BS leaders should have their training, both BS and GS require training, though BS has a lot more stuff going on the GS, but the GS has lots more red tape and paperwork we have to submit before doing anything---took me an hour to fill out all my forms this year, for the 2 girls and myself as a leader. ---but I do believe scouting is good for kids, but if they really, really hate it, don't make them, it just makes everyone miserable there.

How exactly is your daughter going [2008-07-01]
What does your child need money for? You say itback to normal. Dragging her through court will not help her overcome her fear of dogs. Instead, you should be concentrating your efforts on having the dog impounded. Soon you will be known as the neighbor quick to sue. You I I got the impression from your original post. You said very little about the emotional details of the situation. You primarily discussed the money aspect of it. If I I just didn You even mentioned you watch People These shows put ideas into people My kids play baseball. They get hit with baseballs all the time when they Do I have the right to sue the parents of that child who hit them? How would that help them?

Private vs state college. [2008-06-24]
My daughter has been accepted to U of Tampa, a private college. She will be a transfer student from a community college. However, she is also entertaining going to U of South FL(St. Pete campus). Financially it At USF, she will be covered 75% by Bright Futures. We will have to take out loans for housing for either. We are having extreme anxiety over this. Both campuses are very nice, but her personality is more condusive to the St. Pete (state college) atmosphere. ItUT which is in the middle of downtown Tampa. There are so many factors and if I enumerated them here, well, ya But her major concern is learning and her second concern is being happy in her environment. We are not big city folk, but I have no doubt wherever she goes, she will succeed. I just want her to have the best experience possible. In my heart I think USF is best, but she thinks resume-wise, a private college would look better. Also, she is having a problem with turning downthe grants/scholarships ($15,000) from UT and opting for a state school. Let me also briefly say that her program of study is very strong at both schools and she has links with a professor at one of the schools who is advising her, but nonbiased (so he's helpful, but not enough to say GO HERE! lol) I I don't know... She's going to have to make this decision on her own, but if any of ya'll have any input regarding either school or the area or college experience with state vs private, I would really appreciate a word or two! One more thing... she Not that that's a big consideration, but a comfort zone is a good thing? And... I would move there with her IN A HEARTBEAT (either place), but my son is about to enter an AS program (radiology) at the community college here and that track cannot be interrupted... just wanted to give all pertinent info for best input by ya'll.

News story - did anyone else here this - too funny [2008-06-04]
I was just watching the news and there is a story about a lady who won a prize at some baseball game - her prize?.... a funeral and a casket. The catch. She has 30 years to claim her prize. We are just rofl. I can hear the annoucement over the loudspeaker at the game.....And congrats to our winner Mrs. ----. You have just won....a buriel!

GOod for you! [2008-06-01]
Iscenes that you just could not believe, even with police being called in. It was disgusting behavior from the ADULTS!! Shame on them. There will always be bad calls, bad umps, bad refs, dirty players, both losses as well as wins but being part of a team and learning good sportsmanship and dealing with those things in a level headed way are what build character in your son, so I commend you!

One of my fav holiday weekends, second [2008-05-23]
Saturday, we have a huge craft show to go to, followed by 3 baseball games of my boys', followed by some serious picnicking Saturday evening. As for Sunday, fairly relaxing, a little work in the morning and evening, visiting family in the afternoon and picnicking some more. Monday should be a fairly quiet day - a little work in the morning and evening, a late morning Memorial Day parade and early afternoon picnicking, maybe a movie with the kids! Love this weekend -- gets me started on a great summer!

My husband recycles (scraps). sm [2008-05-22]
My husband recycles/scraps and makes good money at it. If you have a scrap yard near by, your kids may want to check it out. You have to be 18 to get into the yards so you would have to go with them. This is more than picking up bottles along the road. He picks up things like TVs, vacuum cleaners, anything with a motor in it...ceiling fans, etc. You name it he has scrapped it. You have to break everything down into different components...copper with insulation, clean copper, cast iron, cast steel, aluminum etc. You have to take the freon out of A/C units and refrigerators. Scrap copper is $3 a pound here in Michigan. I don't know where you live or what your kids have in mind, but it is a dirty job. I always tell my husband, where else can you get dirty and get paid for it. And my favorite part of his scrapping is watching the guy who runs the crane with the big magnet on it. I want that job when I grow up. LOL. Good luck to your kids.

I'm so mad I could spit nails!!! [2008-05-06]
Okay, let me start off by saying, I I I have 2 boys playing little league this year on the same team. Last night they had a game against the 1 team I really wanted them to beat. I absolutely cannot stand1 of thekid She is at every sports function and likes to run everything. She is very pushy and will do anything to have her kid come out on top (suck up to the head coaches, offer to run the boosters, make ridiculous posters to hang on her front porch for the kids on the bus to see). You get the picture? Ordinarily I keep my distance from her because just the sound of her know-it-all voice gets on my nerves. Last night I stood in the same spot I always stand in. My kids were the home team and I was near the first baseline (my kids play first and second base and pitch). She ends up 3 feet from me. The first couple of innings were fine. Let me say that I do not boo the other team or make any remarks at all about their players. I am there to cheer my sons Now to the technicalities, the last 2 games we have been short an outfield ump. The only ump we had was the one behind the catcher. Usually when this happens, if there Last night, this guy volunteers, who happens to be this other woman As unhappy about this as I was, I said nothing. I figured he deserved the benefit of the doubt. He made several calls early on that seemed fair, so I pretty much dismissed the bias I thought he might have. Then about halfway through the game, we have a runner on first and third andour kid up to bat. He hits it and the runner on first goes to second while the runner on third goes home. The ball made it to the infield and the shortstop tries to catch the runner going to second. Our runner makes it second base just before the other kid does and the other kidends up on top of him and he drops the ball. Now, the outfield ump (gramps), calls our kid safe and we got a run in. The catcher ump turns around and calls the kid out, saying it was a forced play and he didn How he saw that from his distance is beyond me. Secondly, when he called the kid out after the fact, he gave no explanation for it. The coaches didn Now this is when I got a litte irritated. I yelled out that our kid was on the base first and the other ump called him safe. I I was not talking about any of the kids. I was stating that the other ump I probably did go on a little longer than I should have, but it not only cost us a run, it also gave us 3 outs to end the inning. At this point, the woman sitting 3 feet away, says Enough already! I turned and said I don I then turned back to my mom and the 1 coach and asked what the call was and why. This woman then addresses me by name and begins telling me the rules of baseball. Now mind you, this woman has never played baseball in her life (we went to the same school) and the only kid she has in baseball a son younger than my oldest. Furthermore, later on in the game, she had no clue what the infield fly rule is (and even I knew that one), my point being she doesn So after she starts telling me this, I looked at her and said I Needless to say, 2 bad calls later, we lost the game. I I realize this is only a game and it But this woman She I know I She had 3 kids before she even got married and milked the system for all she could. Now she The kids had to be quiet and they had to watch her shows. They weren Okay, I feel better. I just really needed to vent this one. I think the next time we play them, I will stand on the opposite side of the field from her and maybe wear earplugs, so I can't hear her either.

As a mom of 2 boys, now older, [2008-05-06]
who played baseball and hockey, do your son a favor and refrain from making a scene. It's embarrassing for him and puts such a negative tone on the game for all the kids. Be the better person, take the higher ground, keep your mouth closed and realize this should be fun for the KIDS.

Got another funny story.......sm [2008-04-24]
The same DD is now 16 in high school. The other day she came in my office and says mom, where is that umbilical cord? I said what thinking my brain was on work and I wasnextension cord but had just dissected a pig at school! My other DD is 12 and we were at the baseball game the other day waiting to pick up the 16-yo when I urgently needed to go to the restroom. My 12-yo says use the ones at the concession stand. So I pull up close to the concession stand and there are 2 doors, neither with signs on them. I said which door is the bathroom. She said I donuterus in there anyway. I said a what? She said a uterus you know those things that guys stand up and use the bathroom in! Of course, she was talking about a urinal. About the same time as I was explaining what a uterus was out comes a lady from the women's restroom and I said oh look there is a uterus in there see! Most all women have them, lol. Can you tell my kids are exposed to medical terminology? 16-yo is taking A&P classes so we have been going over a lot and I have been helping her to study and learn. I think they are learning too much!

I was the first girl in the county play Little League - made the All Stars too! Girls rule! Also.. [2008-04-22]
that very same year I won the county spelling bee! The word I won it on was ptomaine. One other special thing happened to me that year I got my ears pierced and hit a home run on my 10th birthday. I swear it... I totally remember touching my little gold studs before I got up to bat and then crack. Even the people that didn 1978 was awesome. My grandma also played baseball during WWI. This thing is not connected to the above, but I am related to Martin Van Buren, 8th President.

Good Comeback for Smokers (from a nonsmoker)! [2008-04-04]
from Fox News Channel dailygut.com or see below. He's funny! I never miss the show! friday's gregalogue: smoking bans and death So I was reading the Economist - ha, just kidding - I am barely literate. Actually someone read it to me, and told me how American smoking bans have led to the deaths of many innocent people. By preventing people from smoking comfortably in bars, more folks die in fatal accidents involving booze. How so? Well, researchers think smokers are driving farther to places where smoking is allowed - like places with outdoor seating, or my intricate system of tunnels near the overpass. And all that somehow leads to more drunk driving, and death. To which I add: Phooey! I read of a far more intriguing theory: that smoking bans make restaurants more attractive to nonsmoking shut-ins, smarmy geeks who can't handle their booze, much less conversation. Finally, they take off their drawstring sweatpants, shave their pimply backs -and hit the town, where they get drunk and kill people. See - it's the callous and unthinking nonsmokers who are to blame - those stupid, fat nonsmoking jerks. Look, I've always hated the smoking ban. I think the health threats from passive smoking are fabricated - and books have been written on the faulty data behind the research. Plus, smoking on the street blows - as a worldwide celebrity it's hard to puff when you're constantly kissed and hugged by adoring fans. It's all just a scam to legislate behavior that people don't like, and has nothing to do with science. Fact is, if you let smokers smoke -only smokers die. That's it. Everyone else is fine. Which is a shame, because I'd really like to take a few vegetarians with me. And if you disagree with me, then you sir are worse than Hitler.

I know the feeling of getting nothing [2008-03-25]
done. I have 3 boys, ages 10, 7 and 5. I work 2 part-time jobs and I specifically scheduled myself off 1 of them on Monday, knowing they would be home. Fortunately, it was nice enough out that they could play outside in the afternoon while I worked and then had baseball practice in the evening (all 3 of them woo-hoo) so I could get to the track and the store. I actually got to sleep in yesterday and got some cleaning done before I went to work (I do work at home). Overall, it was a pretty nice day off, but I learned a long time ago not to try to work an 8-hour day with 3 kids home. It just doesn't work.
