Obviously you've never had a family member killed by a drunk driver. [2008-11-17]
Long ago? Time has nothing to do with it. The man has an alcohol problem and left the scene of a homicide. Sounds like you're ok with that. I'm not. It speaks volumes about his character.

How not to get killed?!?!?! How about leave the idi0t!!! [2008-08-24]
I am very independent and I don't care if I have to go get a one bedroom apartment so my two small kids and I can have a place to go. I would not live in fear of my life over anything! I would figure it all out once I got a restraining order and filed a divorce! Wow, I could say a lot, but I am going to keep my comments to myself. That is what I would do. You asked for advice, there you have it!

UNC Student Killed, now WBC protestors plan to picket [2008-03-15]
I live in NC and the news of the murdered student body president (out of respect will not list her name here) has upset all of us in this area, of all religions and non-religious as well. The WBC is a radical group calling themselves Christians who plan to protest at UNC during the memorial service for this beloved young woman. The group is listed asa hate group but call themselves Christians and wear shirts and bear signs saying God hates you and God hates colleges, etc. Their website proclaims thank God another college student is dead. This is so horrible and unspeakable. For those who are not Christian, please do not believe for one moment that this represents common Christian viewpoints. It definitely does not. The vast majority of Christians are horrified at what these people believe and proclaim.

Just read where a 42-year-old woman was mauled and killed by her own 2 pit bulls sm [2007-10-04]
in FL near Jacksonville. Then the dogs turned on her son who was also bit in the throat but luckily will survive. Then the dogs turned on the sherrif When you go to the FL news website you see tons of pit bull owners sticking up for this breed and saying how they are great dogs. if they are so great why are they banned in multiple counties across the nation? No other type of dog is banned? Neighbors, cousins all say that she was a very loving owner who even slept with the dogs. No neglect, nothing. There were people saying that they leave their pits alone with their young children, as young as 3 years old! How ignorant can you be? Tons of FL residents are calling of the extinction of this breed and I think that You cannot trust a pit bull PERIOD. There is something in their brains that can TICK at any time - this was quoted by a vet who specializes in dog care. So tell me, why do people take chances with this kind of dog? I'm so angry right now!!!!!!

I don't understand why you are so afraid of offending her??!!! I don't know how much time has passed, but I would have been rip roaring FURIOUS at her, SIL or not, that she allowed her dog to do that not once but twice. She sounds pretty self-centered and uncaring to me.

I would probably just tar and feather her, that seems like a good remedy for me.

I almost killed my cat with tunafish! [2007-03-21]
Go figure that one out! He was a Maine Coon cat...just HUGE with a huge appetiteand I ran out of food, so I grabbed a can of tuna until I could get to the store. That night I woke up toSCREAMING like I have never heard an animal scream before and his whole body was spasming. Oh it was the most horrible thing I had ever witnessed! I called an emergency vet clinic who took him in right away. He had a complete blockage of his urethra and couldn They had to catheterize him and the bag was full of bloody urine and he spent 3 days in thehospital. I was a wreck but he was ultimately fine. Holy crap did that vet bill nearly cripple me!ICU for a cat...why oh why do I keep on with these friggin You never know what will cause something to go wrong with these things. Never blame yourself...ever. We are all doing the best we can with what we have.

Women with restraining orders are killed by their abuser [2007-03-19]
Don't get a false sense of security. There have been good advances in the past 20 years but it's still a man's world. Stay in contact with your friends and family and make sure to give a few of them a code word. Something like the sky is blue or I really want chinese food and they will know to call the police if you are in trouble. Do what you need to do to protect yourself. Do not count on the police. I was attacked in my home 2 hours after leaving the courthouse. I even called 911 when I got home because I was scared. They were on their way but he got there faster. I was young and nieve and had a newborn I was thinking about. I wish someone would have told me not to go home. Please don't be nieve like I was and trust the system and that piece of paper. It's hard to imagine your home isn't safe or that someone is going to be 100x more aggressive then you have ever seen them be. I would move and change your numbers and make sure if you work outside your home you alert EVERYONE including the receptionist and your boss/manager and security.

I disagree. Women have gotten killed by not moving or changing their phone numbers. [2007-03-17]

I'm so sorry for you pain... [2008-11-14]
My dad drank a lot too. I donan alcoholic though. My dad was a horrible father when all five of the kids were at home. He beat my oldest brother horrendously in front of all of us many, many times. He lined us all up by age when I was 5 (I There is a long list of other things that happened. Once we moved out of the house, he turned into a different man. He did apologize to us. He became the best father and friend I could ask for. He was always so thrilled when I stopped by and made me feel more loved than anyone ever has. Fourteen years ago yesterday, my dad was killed in an airplane crash. He had an experiemental airplane and was flying by himself. I have never forgotten my childhood because it has a lot to do with who I am today, but I am so thankful for the time I did have with him once things changed. Maybe you could tell your dad how you feel about him, explain how hard it is to be around him now and let him take the next step. It might beworth a shot. I I know it is really difficult to sort out all the emotions sometimes. I'll be thinking of you.

A little off topic, but [2008-11-13]
I was out to lunch one day with my DH and on my way home I came upon a crash that had just happened at an intersection...one of the drivers was a young girl (she happened to go to the same HS as my DD). The other driver was a 30-something mother of 2 or 3. The young girl had run a red light and T-boned the other car. The mother was instantly killed in the crash, with 2 of her children in the car with her. When the teen girl got out of her car...yep, she was on the phone...! And obviously she was not calling 911! So sad...my DD said this girl went off the wall after this accident.

You probably saved someone's life in the future. [2008-11-13]
A couple months ago there was a terrible head-on train crash near Los Angeles, and the cause of it was the engineer of the passenger train blew through a red light because he was texting some teenagers. It's a shame he was killed, because he should have lived to see the carnage he caused.

Always, always call the cops sm [2008-11-13]
My husband was nearly killed by a tractor trailer driver who changed his story a dozen times, themedics were called but unfortunately, the other driver went his merry way and was not cited until days later for following too close, reckless endangerment, speeding, mistake in log book, and a laundry list, first he said my husband going too slow. Reconstruction said no way, but while my husband was in hospital having his scalp sewn back on, this guy ran away. Had to hire a detective to find him, went on for years before we got our bills paid, he got off with heavy fines and warnings he would go to jail if it happened again. It had happened in another state previously but could not bring that up in court. My sorrow - I should have had him arrested right that moment but I was not there. He should have been tested for drugs, etc. He went from saying husband's fault to that he dropped his coffee and was picking it up off the floor and then changed it again to something else. He still drives and my husband is totally disabled. Please get the cops involved the minute something happens - don't wait. I had no choice, I had to travel to another state to the hospital. I wish my husband were conscious enough to have him arrested right there. You did the right thing calling the cops, everyone should do that. Believe me, she could have killed you or someone else later. I hope you scared the pants off her.

One thing I forgot to add was that - sm [2008-11-11]
a big part of the problem is owners who don't neuter their male dogs. Most of the attacks on the news in my area seem to involve un-altered males. The dog that had me cornered was also an un-altered male. There was a really horrible attack in San Francisco a couple years ago... a 12-year-old boy was killed in his own home by the family's pet pitbulls. (Un-altered males). Apparently there was already a problem with them, and the mother knew the dogs couldn't be trusted with her son (who was afraid of them) home alone. A female she had was in heat at the time, too. The boy was home alone, and the mother had locked the dogs in another room. Somehow, they got out, and tore the poor boy to shreds. Imagine being the mom and coming home to that! When animal control picked up the dogs, they had the boy's blood all over them. I actually recognized one of them - had seen someone walking it through the park one day. So the problem was... even though the mother knew the dogs might be dangerous, and she tried to do the right thing by locking them up, on that particular day, that wasn't enough. Granted, they don't all act like that. Plus just about any breed can revert to a predatory pack mentality under the right conditions. But again, irresponsible breeding has changed the breed in large part for the worse (they're bigger and more aggressive). Unresponsible owners who don't properly socialize the dogs (or who fight them, or encourage them to be aggressive for 'protection') are the worst offenders. And those who are backyard breeders. Now there are 'way too many of them, and 'way too many with the bad bloodlines, too. And you won't believe THIS: Remember the story about the huge Presa Canario dogs that killed a woman in a San Francisco apartment hallway? (Earning their owners some well-deserved jail-time). Well, some people are actually crossing pits and Presas! Saw some for sale the other day on Craigslist. Talk about breeding 'biting machines'! Those things will grow up to be 150-lb. pitbulls-on-steroids.

Those pit bull attacks are ashame...sm [2008-11-10]
I don't know why these dogs attacked. I don't know if these dogs were provoked or what. It is hard for me to imagine a dog just attacking for no reason. I can't imagine my dog ever doing that. I know other people who have pits as pets and they have never had a problem with attacks. I think every good owner should know their dog inside and out and know their little quirks. Now I could see a pit bull attacking an owner who was sometimes mean to them or mistreated them in some way. I could see them getting enough and attacking. A lot of times I think that is really behind attacks and we don't know that. Still a dog never should kill a human. When you own a pit you have to have the utmost respect for the fact they could kill an animal or human if they wanted. They are physically capable but most are not emotionally capable. My dad had a couple different pits and I have learned my great grandfather had pits for many years. He would only have one at a time. He took his pit hunting hogs and the pit would hold the hog and my great grandfather would put a rag over the dogs nostrils to cause him to have to let go of the hog and he would do whatever it was he then did with the hog. I didn't ask details. But what I am saying here is this was an man who was in close interaction with a pit and was right there when they attacked hogs and he intervened and had to pull them away from the hog by cutting off breathing from the dog so he would let go. He was never attacked or bitten. My dad said that was never an issue. The dogs knew he was the master and they never got out of line. If these were as unstable as some are made out to be and some may be but if they were really that unstable they could have attacked and killed this man. But he never had to worry about this. All of his pits loved and respected him as their owner. Now one deciding factor could be he never mistreated his dog. Never ever. He always treated them good. I think this may be why his dogs never showed him anything but kindness. Again there are some dogs (pits and others) who are unstable. They are just flat out mean and would do anything. But not all dogs are like this. My husband often says when people say aren't you worried CJ could hurt you one day. He says no I KNOW in my heart with everything in me this dog would die before he would hurt one of us. This pit is the most loving affectionate dog I have had the joy to own. Don't ask me how I know.. You would have to know CJ.

No one is judging a dog. Dogs [2008-11-09]
don They are animals. The point that I continue to make is that IT DOES NOT MATTER what this elderly man did. The pets in the home attacked and killed him. NoPET should ever be capable by temperament of attacking and killing a human being. For the sake of your argument, if the man reached out witha cane and rapped the dog on the head, in your mind would that justify the reactions of the dog to kill the person who struck him? How many other dog breeds would run behind the couch or under a table whenconfronted withabusivetreatment? How many other dog breeds wouldgrowl? Bark?Nip? Bite?No one is saying that an animalshould not defend itself, but a dog whose defense is to kill a human is a dog that should NOT be kept as a pet.A dog is an animal and does not think like a human, as you have pointed out, and that is precisely the thing that makes them unpredictable and makes the pitbull breed attacked unprovoked. It is all in what the dog perceives as a threat, whicha humancannot always predict, or more importantly, cannot always prevent.

The unpredictable temperament and [2008-11-09]
genetic predisposition to aggression of your beloved pit bull breed caused this man He was not killed by a Great Dane or a Great Pyrenees or a Labrador or a Golden or a St. Bernard. He was killed by 3 pit bulls that should have respected him as their master, elderly or not, demented or not. You seem to be focused on placing blame on the others in the house who left him alone with the pit bulls. I agree with you that they are responsible -- just as you would be responsible if your pit bull were to attack someone. And with a pit bull it is always possible. You may think you are taking every precaution against it, but you can never, ever be sure what your dog will find threatening, and thus when your dog will attack.

My dog is not unstable, he is protective...sm [2008-11-09]
There's a difference there. I have raised him from a baby and he would not attack unprovoked. Never. And so far he has never attacked. But the only way I could see him ever attacking is if someone tried to hurt me or came in the house he didn't think belonged or something of that sort. I don't allow people to come in with the dog in the house. I have a fenced in back yard and he is put out there if someone comes over he doesn't know. Sometimes me and my huband have introduced him to people while my husband holds him on a leash to make sure he can't bite. The key is to let him slowly approach the person and sniff and let them talk to him and he will start to wag and sniff and lick. He has to be introduced to strangers and we have successfully introduced him to friends and now when they come over he is wanting to get practically in their lap licking and loving on them. He is like many other dogs who are uneasy with strangers, i.e. chihuahuas, Yorkies, Boxers, German Sheppards, Boston Terriers, etc. (any dog actually) BUT the difference is he is a BIG dog and his size and capability makes him more dangerous IF he does attack but he is just a dog like any other to me. He is just protective. But believe it or not I had a Yorkie who would attack the pitbull on a regular basis. If he was unstable he would have killed the little Yorkie but he didn't. Many times he would just walk away and look at me like mom help me here. One time he had enough and held the Yorkie down with his mouth but didn't leave a mark on him. He was telling him hey I've had enough. If he was mean or vicious he could have easily killed this little dog. But it isn't in his nature. I can't speak for all pits there but mine is not a vicious dog.

abused pit bulls [2008-11-09]
Again I refer to the web site I have posted which gives statistics regarding pit bull ownership by criminals. I don Of course I am not suggesting that you orblondiearecriminals, but I would hope that you could at least admitthat a large percentage of pit bulls are owned by those involved in drugs and other crimes, with the purpose of attacking and/or intimidatingothers in their criminal circle. There are countless other breeds capable of providing the same companionship and loyalty and unconditional love as a pit bull, but without the strength and aggression to kill human beings. Did you read on the web site about the 24-year-old woman who was killed in her own bed by her 2 pit bulls she had raised since puppyhood? Nobody knows what happened, but these were her two babies, and yet then turned on her and killed her. It is believed that she could have had a seizure, as she was epileptic. Why would a dog perceive their master lying in bedhaving a seizure(if indeed that is what happened) as a threat, and why would they kill her? What set them off? Ask yourself THAT question. Ifpit bullswere the only loyal dog or the only loving dog available to own, I could maybe understand the risk all you owners are taking. But that is just not the case. There are so many other breeds with which you can form that same bond, without the terrible risks.

judgement [2008-11-08]
sad you feel that way. The majority of pitbull attacks you hear are usually 9 times out of 10 mixed breeds anyway, but the public only hears pitbulls and honestly statistic wise the pitbull is half a million times more likely to be killed by a human than the other way around. Every pitbull attack it's always the dog's fault is what you hear & it's easy to blame the one who can't speak for themselves & say what really happened and say if they were provoked, so I don't pass judgement, I leave that up to God.

Michigan passed it and I support it. [2008-11-06]
I think anyone who is seriously ill should have whatever is available to help ease their pain. I know it helps with nausea of chemotherapy too. I think it should be decriminalized. That is such a young age to die for a dog. I can relate. I had a dog that was half Yorkie and half chihuahua that died at the age of 3, and we don't know for sure what was wrong with him. He got sick. We took him to the vet multiple times and never could get an answer and he just died. We think it had something to do with the fact at the age of 1-1/2 he accidentally got in some antifreeze. It was on the ground at my dad's shop and I didn't know it was there. I saw him drinking something and said what is he drinking and my husband said that is antifreeze. I grabbed him up and went straight to the vet, and they saved him miraculously. But I believe it damaged his organs and that is what eventually killed him. We even had blood sent to a university to be studied. No answers. I am so sorry about LouLou. I know it is devastating to lose your pet when they are like a member of your family.

close minded people like you don't run our country then. Go do some research before you make comments. A pit bull is a dog like any other. They are steretyped as being vicious because some people fight them. I do not agree with fighting any breed of dog including pit bulls. Those fighting pits are TRAINED to do that. They are not born that way. Some won't even fight after being trained to. I used to have a Yorkie that was a little fellow but he was 10 times meaner than my pit. Actually I will tell you how nice the pit was. With his size he could have easily killed the yorkie. Well the yorkie was constantly growling and biting the pit and one day just reached up and bit him square on the balls. The pit turned around and just looked at him. He could have torn the little fellow apart but he didn't. Now would a unstable mean dog be that calm? You need to rethink your comments. You are way off the mark.

There are people [2008-10-07]
who view their pet(s) as children because it is all they have. Our dogshave always beena big part of our familyand are viewed as one of our children.Dog aggression/people aggression, it is all the same. Aggression is aggression and can easily be turned toward both human and animal given the right situation. You cannot possibly predict what will happen. It could be that one day your dog decides not to listen to youwhen in an aggressive stateand not come back when called. Our Pitbull was very obedient, did not even need a leash (hah in hindsight), although was never off one out in publicexcept at the ranch. She was one of the best behaved, most obedient dog at the ranch except for the Border Collie mix she nearly killed, who was trained for herding and was amazing at it. You know the potential is therefor your dog to do serious damage and I hope you are never put inthe position we were. It happens so fast, in the blink of any eye many lives are affected and changed forever.

Sorry you had this experience with a pit...sm [2008-10-06]
But I don't believe it is a breed thing. I believe you were unfortunate to have happened to get a pitbull who did this. If your dog hadn't been raised with the cat I would say well that is just a dog being a dog but to be raised together and get along that is weird. But there are other dogs who are capable of attacking. I had a stray mix breed medium size dog. It didn't have any pit in it. I saw it kill a cat in my mother's yard. Brutally killed it. But it wasn't a mean dog to us. It also would try to attack our bealge pups. So I know other dogs are capable of killing animals. The pitbull can do more damage though than most dogs. But I have seen pictures of lab attacks on owners, Dalmation attacks on a child, many others. Any dog can do this. Personally I have a neighbor who had a little chihuahua and it was there little doll. They adored this little dog. Well someone who lives a mile to a mile and a half down the road has a Dalmation. It climbed the fence in its yard and went a mile or more down the road where the little chihuahua was outside peeing and mauled it to death with its owners watching. I mean they said the dalmation just attacked when it seen the little dog no provacation. So I know what other dogs can do too. But most won't. I hope you never have this problem again with any of your dogs. You had a most unfortunate incident with your pitbull and I believe this has rightfully left a bad taste in your mouth for the breed. But try to think of it like this. There are good people and bad people. There are good dogs and bad dogs. We have serial killers and rapists but we also have good people out there. Dogs are not different. Don't look down on the whole breed because of one bad experience. There are so many kind pits out there who have never hurt a living thing. Really.

What if they accidentally got loose? [2008-10-03]
I know sometimes it is beyond your control and dogs get out. A board on your fence can break, the chain can break, whatever it may be. What if the pit got out and killed something or someone? That is what scares me about these dogs. If you are keeping it contained, good for you, but if it gets out and kills someone or something, you are responsible.

I think it would depend on whether [2008-09-18]

have terrible guilt and remorse after ABs it would seem that there should be more involved to get one, at least a visit with an unbiased psychiatrist who tells the full story of how one might feel later. I had someone say to me, Now this is your decision right? Later on you don I said I wouldnchoice at least it is a well-informed choice. For me it is not so much guilt toward God as it is to the child I allowed to be killed. It is not a religious thing at all.

My thoughts [2008-09-04]
It literally makes me ill to think of what has happened to her and that there is actually a human being on this planet that would do such a thing. I do believe she is guilty. I don't think many people have any doubt about that. Just trying to understand why someone would harm her and what was going through their minds at the exact time they were doing this. I can't understand it. I remember years ago that Susan Smith (think that's her name) some other poster mentioned her, but I remember when that happened I thought if parents can't handle having kids don't they know how many people would love to have kids. I thought if you can't take having kids anymore then please bring them to a shelter so they will be safe and other families who cannot have children (like me) would be able to adopt these. I don't get why people don't do that. We read and hear on the TV all these very strange things happened. Seeing as I type all day DH reads news and stuff and tells me bout these cases. Some young guy was driving down the road pulled over took his infant son out of the car and either beat him or just killed him. Someone saw this and the guy was saying something about the kid being posessed by satan. Another case some guy through his child off a bridge, some lady drowned her five children, and the latest DH told me about was some guy who was let out of some psychiatric hospital (I think), but went on a killing rampage. Walked into a store and shot a bunch of people, went somewhere else and shot some people, killed a P.O. and others. To bring it back to the story of Casey Anthony and what her mother has done (or not done maybe), but with all the very weird things going on does anyone have any idea why these things are happening. I sit here as a regular person wondering what is happening in the country. I've lived in other countries and sure they have crimes but not like here (as many or as horrendous). Is something going on that we don't know about. I read about the chem trails and wonder what in the world is in the poison that they are pouring on is. Is this what is making some people to absolutely lose their minds. What is wrong with our society.
