military appreciation [2008-05-07]
Can he send a letter to a deployed soldier and write about doing that for school? When my husband was in Iraq, he loved getting mail from kids.
Also, he could look up different occupations they do, such as Seabees help rebuild war torn countries. They also built a bridge in Maine to help the sea life. Let me know, I can email articles.
military appreciation?? [2008-05-06]
I the subject is military appreciation. I can't think of anything they do for us other than fight for our country/rights and help out in times of need (such as in Katrina)
anybody have any ideas?

Appreciation for gifts [2008-04-14]
Do you have your children (let I have always tried to make sure my child knows the importance ofthe small gesture of saying thanks when receiving a gift. Of course I have never made the child write a stack of 20after a birthday party but when receiving a St. Patrickday card with money from hisAunt or grandma....an extra special gift because he did well in sports or school...things of that nature I have made a point for him to say thank you in some way to that person. I am a little hurt that my sister has not once had her children call to say thank you or send me a post card, a picture/drawing, nothing. I know that I am very old fashioned and martha stewart-ish so just wondering if I'm a little loopy on this topic or if others do this too.
Happy Thanksgiving & we thank our military! (sm) [2007-11-19]

You will have to cut and paste this link I guess - it is worth it - very beautiful and touching!

Beef jerky is a great gift and Jolly Ranchers. My husband is very popular at mail call time.
Sons in Military - Thank You [2007-10-16]
Thanks, next time I hear from either one of my children, I'll ask them about this. I wonder why the military just doesn't supply them with it ????? Thanks so much.
She needs her keester booted into the military! [2007-09-15]
Let them apply that tough love and discipline and she can even get herself an education, food, medical care, and housing.
Was that supervisor in the military or something? [2007-07-29]
One day you should have all plotted together and when she came in the room, jumped up and saluted. ROFL
I had a barium enema quite a while ago and my splenic flexure goes up really high and then twists. Sometimes gas will get stuck in there and it will hurt like the dickens. I'm glad I had the BE, though, because I know what it is and that it will pass in a little while. If it didn't, I would be at the urgent care pronto.
Either the bank or Military Surplus store. [2007-07-26]
There would be only two reasons for me to run away from my home. One reason would be voluntarily, as in winning the lottery--hence the bank. The other would also be voluntary but there would be retribution involved--hence the Military Surplus store.
A military man shot his wife [2007-07-15]
This man was our sonfun guy to be around, always smiling, always happy. But now, this and I can't get over the sick feeling in my stomach. He is on the run, of course. He left behind his little boy, with no mother and now no father. Temporary insanity?????
Please remember our military today! [2007-07-04]
Happy 4th to everyone! Please just take a minute today to remember all of our wonderful, brave men and women who have fought to make this day possible. This is not just another holiday to get time and a half, or just another day to complain about no work, bad hours, etc. This is a day to celebrate our freedom, the freedom that is made possible by every member of our military!!
Please remember them in your prayers today.
If I had a child in the military now, [2007-02-02]
sorry but probably would do as a lot of families did for Vietnam war and that was to head for the border, namely Canada. I thought if gay in the military, supposed to try and keep it quiet?? These to me are ever bit as bad as protesting at funeral of AIDS patients. You have some really sick people in this world to do things like this and please, like you, I don't want to get started on the other folks president in Washington.
Same here - military fixed him tho [2007-01-18]
His pants were hanging down really low and I had asked him a million times to just pull them up a little bit. He wouldn't do it.
Went to the recruiter's office with him and his recruiter met us out in the foyer between all the military offices. Son reached out to shake his hand and the recruiter instead reached over and jerked his pants down. Didn't say one word. Turned around walked into his office.
Son pulled his pants up to where they should have been. The recruiter then comes right back out, says hello, and shakes his hand.
Son never wore his pants like that again and, yes, he still enlisted. :)
Send a free Let's Say Thanks post card to military [2006-12-04]
Xerox has a website set up where you can send a free printed postcard to U.S. military personnel stationed overseas showing your support and appreciation for their service to our country. Click on the link below to be directed to their website.
I agree [2008-06-04]
That is completely wrong of her. She is showing no appreciation for what you do for them. My favors would run out too. You have no obligation to help someone who canIt The blank would of course be a town far from them. Maybe they will get the hint, then again people like that usually don't.

Salvation Army? [2008-05-06]
I'm not certain on this so you may want to do a little more investigating but I think the Salvation Army is sponsored by or maybe just has a large volunteer population from the military. if i remember correctly they are the ones who do the Toys for Tots too.
thanks for all of the positive responses! [2008-05-06]
I did not think i was being negative at all, but here are two responses I got:
So you say the only things they do is fight for our country and rights and help out in times of need. What do you think that consists of? How many lives have been given since 1776 to secure and protect those rights? Have you ever looked at the freedoms we have and the wealth we enjoy? What more do you expect the military to do? Wash your clothes. We are the only truly free nation in the world and it is because men and women have chosen to join our military and fight to give you those freedoms that you don't seem to understand.
and
Ma'am, thanks for giving me a subject for my Memorial Day speech in our community. The subject will be:
Americans who have no idea what military heroes have done and are doing for us, thereby humiliating our sacrifices.
wow... [2008-05-06]
that's harsh. bet ya they have nothing else to do. sorry to them but my brain is full. takes a little work to pull some things out from the depths. :) not to mention we all need reminders once in a while. it has nothing to do with not caring.
i also think this is a great topic for a child to do a project on. they hear a lot of things but very often donsend our troops home and there was one about all the deaths. to him, that just means you sign up for the military and you die or get hurt. there most certainly is more to it than war and all aspects should be commended.

athiest soldier doesn't believe in God but [2008-04-27]
I commend for this man for standing up for what he doesn't believe in!

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.— Like hundreds of young men joining the Army in recent years, Jeremy Hall professes a desire to serve his country while it fights terrorism.
But the short and soft-spoken specialist is at the center of a legal controversy. He has filed a lawsuit alleging he FONT-SIZE: 100%! important; PADDING-BOTTOM: 1px! important; COLOR: darkgreen! important; BORDER-BOTTOM: darkgreen 0.07em solid; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent! important; TEXT-DECORATION: underline! important href=http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,352703,00.html# target=_blank itxtdid=4915055>Robert Gates.
I Hall said. I want no one else to go what I went through.
Known as the atheist guy, Hall has been called immoral, a devil worshipper and — just as severe to some soldiers — gay, none of which, he says, is true. Hall even drove fellow soldiers to church in Iraq and paused while they prayed before meals.
I see a name and rank and United States flag on their shoulder. That he said.
Hall, 23, was raised in a Protestant family in North Carolina and dropped out of school before earning his GED. It wasn't until after he joined the Army that he began questioning religion, eventually deciding he couldn't follow any faith.

But he feared how that would look to other soldiers.
I was ashamed to say that I was an atheist, Hall said.
It eventually came out in Iraq in 2007, when he was in a firefight. Hall was a gunner on a Humvee, which took several bullets in its protective shield. Afterward, his commander asked whether he believed in God, Hall said.
I said, I
The issue came to a head when, according to Hall, a superior officer, Maj. Freddy J. Welborn, threatened to bring charges against him for trying to hold a meeting of atheists in Iraq. Welborn has denied Hall's allegations.
Hall said he had had enough but feared he wouldn't get support from Welborn's superiors. He turned to Mikey Weinstein and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.
Weinstein is the foundation's president and a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate. He had previously sued the Air Force for acts he said illegally imposed Christianity on students at the academy, though that case was dismissed. He calls Hall a hero.
The average American doesn Weinstein said. You know how hard it is to take on your chain of command? This isn
Hall was in Qatar when the lawsuit was filed on Sept. 18 in federal court in Kansas City, Kan. Other soldiers learned of it and he feared for his own safety. Once, Hall said, a group of soldiers followed him, harassing him, but no one did anything to make it stop.
The Army told him it couldn't protect him and sent him back to Fort Riley. He resumed duties with a military police battalion. He believes his promotion to sergeant has been blocked because of his lawsuit, but he is a team leader responsible for two junior enlisted soldiers.
No one with Fort Riley, the Army or Defense Department would comment about Hall or the lawsuit. Each issued statements saying that discrimination will not be tolerated regardless of race, religion or gender.
The Department respects (and supports by its policy) the rights of others to their own religious beliefs, including the right to hold no beliefs, said Eileen Lainez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Defense.
All three organizations said existing systems help soldiers address and resolve any perceived unfair treatment.
Lt. Col. David Shurtleff, a Fort Riley chaplain, declined to discuss Hall's case but said chaplains accommodate all faiths as best they can. In most cases, religious issues can be worked out without jeopardizing military operations.

Hall said he enjoys being a team leader but has been told that having faith would make him a better leader.
I will take care of my soldiers. Nowhere does it say I have to pray with my soldiers, but I do have to make sure my soldiers he said.
Religion brings comfort to a lot of people, he said. Personally, I don

Ask her about it. See how she reacts. Maybe she is in the military. Maybe she doesn't know its posted. You just never know. Ask her.
Yes he is a good man - not 100% but for the most part [2008-04-20]
Just felt I need to do another post to let you know a little more info. Our days consist of talking over current events, watching movies and laughing. We joke around a lot (maybe 30-40% of our day). We talk of things that interest us, what we want, where we want to be. Things we have done over our years together. Our days are probably pretty typical of anyone's life.
Maybe I shouldndifferences in opinions maybe once every 3 or 4 months. So maybe I mistated myself in my original post, maybe my PMS was setting in. Maybe I'm overreacting and have absolutely nothing to worry about.
On a different note, my DH does tell me often that I am a very intelligent person, I am strong, I know what I want and that keeps him grounded. He tells me to keep him in line if I feel hewhat do I want to be when I grow up, but I often hear a lot of people going through the same things. I listen to him, sympathize with him and then I tell him what I think. He listens. Of course it may not stick but he listens and a few days later he will tell me you know you were right. That's why I wonder if he is going through a mid-life crisis at times. He has never ever once been violent or shown any tendencies towards violence. He hates violence and when he hears about it on TV he gets so angry and tells me what he thinks should happen to guys who are violent towards their spouses, children, animals or whatever. He's never raised a hand (I'd beat him to a pulp first). He has never even gotten so upset that he hits an object or kicks a box or anything. In fact, if anyone has a temper out of us it's me (inhereted that little bad puppy from my mom), but I've never done anything more than clench my fists and yell at the top of my lungs (which i'm sure my christian aunt who lived across the road from us got an ear full when I was yelling at the top of my lungs G*d F*ng D*mn it. HA HA Anyway...we do have things at times we should work out. I will read more self help books but no I won't go to a counseler (no money for it) and no I'm not going to divorce him. Yes sometimes I do feel like I'm living in hell, but for the most part I have a good life. At times I feel like maybe I'm the one going through a midlife crisis (no kids, belong to no groups, have no friends here - just me and the PC). DH says I should get back involved in a quilt guild here so am looking around the area (we just moved here a year ago).
Thanks for all the input Iyou tell him this or you demand that or you threaten that you will leave him. I'm like...yeah, right, all I need is another argument.
Anyway...thanks all, just felt I had to post again to let you know a little more about what I'm going through. Like I say, maybe I shouldn't have posted anything. Just felt a bit down at that time. I can keep you posted as to what happens. Will be telling him later she's coming out.
more advice [2008-04-14]
My husband does the whole has to leave thing too. I don Try letting your fiance know that the reason you are leaving is so that you can calm down and not say something in anger that you will regret later, which is why my husband leaves during an argument. We havethe same problem regarding my housecleaning abilities. He What seems small to us though is not small to them and we need to learn to respect that and make an effort. Ask him to show you how he thinks things should be cleaned (in a nonsarcastic manner of course!)
As far as the house building, check out ubuildit.com. We are considering building our own house in a few years when I finish grad school. For a small fee, they help you with permits, plans, finding good licensed contractors. Basically they help you be your own general contractor. My brother-in-law just build a house and did a lot himself like you guys are planning and I think the whole mortgage including land was 145K in Alabama? Land was 33K I think. That was 1350 sq. ft. so that should give you some idea of the total cost you guys are looking at in case you didn Good luck!
sounds the same [2008-04-14]
Your hubby sounds a lot like my fiance - though my fiance wasn't in the military - he has been on his own for over 20 years - raised his son himself and did everything from cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, etc. . He also has a hard time relaxing - always on the go. I'm just the opposite - I love to relax! lol. . I tell him sometimes - it wouldn't change the course of fate if washing the dishes just had to wait. . he doesn't think that is amusing. . his motto is get the work done first, then relax. . but there is always something that needs to be done, so relaxing is put off - He can finally - about once a week - sit down and watch a 2-hour movie with me. . and he loves playing with the new chocolate lab we just got- but most of his hobbies have to do with working on the farm or doing a fixer up project. . We are very opposite in those ways but seem to have a lot of other things in common, so I think we will be fine - just need to communicate a little better. . .
As for the house - we are getting a lot of ideas from our Amish neighbors as far as what kinds of material we need, how much, etc. . we will have to find plumbing and electrical contractors - Amish aren't much help in those areas. LOL. . and my fiance can do a lot of the physical labor himself. We are figuring the cost of building the house will be about $70,000 and it should be worth over twice that just because of the money we are saving by having a lot of the material and doing some of the work ourselves. . plus, we have the land. So I think it is going to be wonderful - of course, he says we should live in it for about 10 years and then sell it and build another one - but I hate to move, so we will see. .
thank YOU for your service! [2008-04-06]
No matter what branch, age, sex, etc., the entire military has my utmost respect. I only hope they know how many of us get a lump in our throats whenever we thank them on the street OR watching something as moving as this. I know I
There isn't much in Odenton [2008-04-01]
To find the things you are looking for, you will likely have to go to Annapolis or Columbia or possibly Bowie or Crofton. Odenton is located right next to Ft. Meade, so it tends to have the kinds of business that turn up outside military bases: bars, tattoo parlors, fast food places, pawn shops, payday loan places, and that sort of thing. There are some strip malls with better shops near the residential areas but not enough to keep anyone busy for more than an hour or so.
I don't know anything about what's available in Virginia Beach. Sorry.
Odenton MD... [2008-04-01]
I don a little farther from DC.
One very interesting place thatwww.savagemill.com
It's an historic old mill site that has been converted to all kinds of small shops - arts and crafts, boutiques, restaurants and an entire floor of antique vendors. You might even find a yarn shop there. Don't miss it!
Arundel Mills is a huge outlet/discount mall just north of Odenton.

Columbia Mall is not far. It
Baltimore Inner Harbor (about 20 miles?) has a lot of shops and restaurants, a big aquarium and other sights. Just bring money!
Downtown Annapolis, probably 20 miles in another direction, is also interesting with lots of little shops, the Naval Academy (tours) and restaurants. Again, bring money!
There's a lot to see and do in the general area but you do need a car to get around. If I think of anything else I'll post again. Hope this helps!
I just read a letter I received from the SM [2008-03-31]
ASPCA thanking me for my membership and devotion. The letter describes a gift they will be sending in appreciation.
They indicate a gift from Miss Bea will be comiing. They tell the story of this darling little dog who was locked in a closet with atrophied muscles from no exercise, etc. This dog was living with pounds of matter fur and living in urine and feces.
The letter went on to say that every time they go into the field to rescue an aminal people like me are with them.
I just needed to share this with you, and to urge you to donate to either the ASPCA or your local animal shelter in behalf of these defneseless animals. The level of cruelty and ignorance is apauling.
I am reduced to tears with emotion at this story, and the fact that I am so appreciated. Thanks for listening.
Sorry to chime in late, but YES! :-) [2008-03-28]
I have shipped cats from overseas when I moved, driven in the car 16 hours nonstop to get them to their new home, paid $1200 in a nonrefundable pet deposit, let my husband go to Guam for 15 months alone when he was in the military because I refused to put them in quarantine for 4 months, and spent probably 15K on a cat with chronic medical problems over a period of 4 years to name a few things, so I most definitely can relate with you.
I'm thin and my husband is [2008-02-24]
sort of like that too. Nothing like what Iporn creep. Another possible explanation is that he has an undiagnosed medical problem such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, so that the only time his body responds is in the morning, when testosterone is highest. This isn it's a communication problem. Getting guys to open up and express their needs/concerns/issues is tough. I've always been impressed with the way Dr. Phil discusses the differences between men and women, and how issues can be resolved, but out of laziness I'm not motivated enough to push my DH to resolve his issues. He does show his love and appreciation of me in many other ways, so I'm just living without the physical side marriage 99% of the time. Oh, my DH claims to want sex, but he also expects me to attack him in whatever way it is he wants to be approached, and I'm stubborn in my believe that he's the one that should be coming to me. That's all it would take to get me turned on, and the fact that I've actually been rejected many times when I tried to make hints or even flat out requests has really turned me off. Nope, if he wants it, he can just approach me.
Has anyone seen The Notebook? I watched it for the first time today. sniff sniff sm [2008-01-15]
I I think it I had a high school sweetheart and he went into the military and we lost touch. He found me, proposed, and I chose the other guy. I regret it till this day.
That was 15 years ago. I found him on line 2 years ago, found out he has been married 3 times in 15 years and was fixin He told me he kept trying to find me in those other women and just couldn't (yeah right.... but it was nice to hear anyway).
So, the man I am married to now. Well, let's just say it's more convenient than love and my heart is broken today. If anyone has love like Allie and Noah had, you are one blessed woman.
why is he moving out? [2008-01-08]
If he does not like your rules or is a troublemaker, I am surprised his sister would want to take him on as it seems from your posts she is a responsible person. Are you a miserable person to live with? I ask because my mother was a misery to live with, and none of us kids could wait to get away from her.
All we ever heard was == All I do for you kids, no appreciation, etc. Believe me, we were not bad kids. She just resented the hard work of being a mother and blamed us for her misery. Hello, don't have kids if you don't want the responsibility, headaches, etc.
Also you keep referring to MY house. That sounds just like my mother. In my family, we call it OUR house.
I'm with you on being lucky and blessed...sm [2007-12-17]
my husband is retired from the military and we get a very nice retirement check every month from that. He does the laundry and cleaning because he likes doing this and runs the kids to appointments as needed. I don't let him go to the grocery store, though, because every time he goes he goes way over budget by bringing tons of stuff home. He does work 12 hours a week helping in the ASP at a local school just for the heck of it. If we needed him to work full-time he would but we're content with our income and lifestyle, and I love my job so there's no reason to do things differently in our household.

He was in the military so I knew that moves were bound to happen but what he failed to tell me was that he was joining his wife in that other state...Apparently, she had gone down there months earlier to set up their home there while he finished up his job here. I remember getting physicially ill. I had never been a cheater before and I was in love with this man...But wait, therem sure she never knew of the years that followed when he called nonstop crying..I really am sorry for her, that she loved and believed in someone like that and that I did..Shame on us.
