Well that's certainly an interesting combo. I might try that tomorrow. [2008-05-25]
My homemade recipe calls for instant coffee, creamer, dry milk, sugar, and a tsp of vanilla, which was okay. I saw the ingredients on Amazon.com and those were the ingredients except instead of vanilla it was cocoa powder, so I made another batch mixed with the first batch and put in 2 tsp of cocoa instead of the vanilla and it turned out really good. Have to make more already. I wish I could send you some of your CCDDP.

This one has struck a chord with me. [2008-07-03]
I have been an assistant scoutmaster for 8 years now. Yes, I am a mom, and there are women scout leaders out there! My job with our troop was Webelos-to-Scout Transition Coordinator. My job was to help our youngest boys and their families become part of our troop and to make sure that the boys have fun and get all that they can from the scout experience. Summer camp was always the make or break time for the youngest boys. You didn't say if your son is a new scout, but I assume this is his first time at summer camp. Homesickness and living in the outdoors are always the biggest hurdles during the first summer camp.
You are not over-reacting because your son is having a bad time. That's a simple fact, and he deserves to have those feelings validated and addressed. Since I'm female, I tend to approach the first-time scout's misery in a different way, and over the years, a lot of men have disagreed with my methods. But, they work. Men seem to like the stick-it-out approach, and I've seen some of the worst leaders actually tease and belittle homesick boys or boys who don't take easily to the outdoor experience. That really finishes off the boy for scouting. He quits. Do you think that is what is happening with your son?
At summer camp with our first year scouts, I always listen to them, validate their fears, and then try to help them overcome their fears with knowledge. If spiders or animals scare them, we go to the nature lodge and find out all about them. We do a good cleaning of their tents or lean-toWell, it I and my fellow adult leaders have spent a lot of nights sitting around picnic tables talking to scouts, sometimes making a game of listening for owls or watching spiders crawl across the table in the lantern light. And if boys do call home, I would run like crazy to the camp phone to call the parents first to let them know what was going on and to tell them to expect a call from their son. In that way, parents were prepared, and we could coordinate our efforts to help their son.
Basically, it just takes some compassion. The hard core approach doesn't work.
Why do I go through all the trouble? Because I know the value of the scouting program. When it's done well, it goes a long way to help parents raise up honorable men. In our troop, our scouts learn to be compassionate, because we've modeled that sort of behavior for them. They learn about living in the outdoors, and learn to take care of themselves and others. That gives them a sense of accomplishment and makes them feel capable. They learn problem-solving skills and teamwork. These are all important life skills, and when scouting is done well, boys who come through are lightyears ahead of most of their non-scout peers by the time they are 18.
But that only happens when it's done right. There are great troops and adult volunteers in the BSA, but there are unfortunately some real losers, as well. It's true that scouting is not for everyone, but there is no reason for so many boys to be pushed away because of issues that just need a little careful thought and attention. This is one of my most passionate issues with scouting. Even the BSA knows that the first year scout is the most likely to quit, and they spend a lot of money and time training volunteers on this subject. It seems that some adults don't learn as quickly as others, though. And there is a core of leaders who like to remember what it was like when they were boy scouts, and won't move ahead or adapt their techniques for the boy of today's times. A new 11-year-old scout should not be expected to act like a man and tough it out. He's still a boy, and living in the woods is usually a totally new experience for him. MOST boys are scared at first, but the men and other boys hate to admit it. A new scout just needs some patience, understanding and time to mature. He needs to feel safe even when he's struggling, and he needs to know that he is supported.
I don't know all the details of your son's experience, but if you think that what I've said might apply to him, you might consider looking for another troop, one that will provide him with a good, supportive program. Not all scout troops are the same. Each has a different personality, so perhaps another troop would suit your son better. If that's not possible, or if at this point he is completely turned off by scouting, there are certainly other activities out there that can teach him the things that are learned through scouting. Encourage him to find out what his talents are and help him to explore all of the possibilities that life has to offer.
I'm so sorry to hear that your son is not enjoying scouts. It really breaks my heart when I hear such stories, because I know that the adult volunteers could handle the situation better. My own sons had a hard time the first time they went to camp, which is why I got involved. I knew there was a better way to deal with such a common problem. My oldest, who is now 20, still works with scouts, and my youngest will receive his Eagle Scout rank in just a couple of weeks. I have seen many, many boys' lives changed for the better by the scouting program, including my own sons. I hope that your son can also have a great experience in scouting.
I'm always happy to talk about scouting, and if you'd like to send me a private message, I'd be glad to share more of my thoughts on the subject.
Is this inconsiderate or what? [2008-07-03]
My son-in-law stopped by our house on the way to work this morning. My hubby was pulling out of the driveway and I saw him give a bag to my husband and he left. My hubby brought the bag to me and said I was told to give this to you until tonight. He said my SIL was going to have a surprise for our daughter this evening after work at a local restaurant but didn I opened the bag and there was ice cream and pickles inside (?). Well, the first thing we thought of was pregnant and needless to say, our first grandchild, the look on our face was shock, disappointment, and happiness at the same time. We just stood there staring at each other, wondering what the **** was going on. My hubby went on to work and called a few minutes later, saying my SIL had text messaged him and said for me nor my husband to call OUR daughter or him today. I have sat in tears most of the day. That jerk (and he is a jerk) just told us our daughter is expecting our grandchild but not to talk to her today. What is the surprise about? He already knows, SHE already knows, we already know. So I guess you have to know my SIL to know he is a controlling person.....my daughter just hasn My husband has been so upset all day about this. Shouldn We are told by him to keep this inside all day. They are going to see his parents tomorrow at their lakehouse and I suppose tell them together, even though I have a feeling he This is a day my husband and I should be so gloriously happy and we feel sad too. We don I have just seen my daughter and she said nothing and I can This is my baby having a baby and we don Our son was here and saw what we saw and he was so happy to be an uncle, grinning from ear to ear, but can I have to say I am so angry with him right now. You have to know how controlling he has been. My daughter wouldn Are you kidding? What sick pleasure does he get from spoiling all this for us by it not coming from her, the pregnant one, standing there. Our child.
We still don After all, they already know, we already know, so why haven I have to say my husband is so upset by this right now, he has called from work several times today and could not even focus on an important meeting this morning. To be honest, I am not at all sure how I will react once we are together this evening. Is this just a dumb way of doing this or has anyone else had this happen like this? We are just dumbfounded about it all and think this is avery cruel way of doing this.
I can't think of any either myself... [2008-06-28]
just had #48, have no kids at home, 6 grandchildren, we come and go as we please, no debt but our mortgage, can wear a size 8,BMI is 22.2,got carded at the casino the other night (they card 30 and under), still can turn heads and have a fantastic hubby. This country is definitely in trouble.... [2008-06-18]
IMHO, many people have blinders on. Still buy like crazy, charge everything, drive brand new cars with big monthly payments, have all the toys, new everything and then only pay minimums on their CC payments or miss a house payment or two and think everyone lives that way. People need to learn how to save money, plain and simple. DH and I both work, make just over six figures, have only the house payment, cars paid for (not newones but donno CC debt, gas prices arencredit cardscomplains that the debt collectors are calling them because they are behind in payments. Most people whould be able to ride out a recession if they had some money in the bank.
My husband just did..... [2008-06-16]
He has had many root canals and crowns. We are now going tomorrow to get one of them completely removed. It was crowned but has decayed underneath to consistency of jello, so off it has to come. Other than dental implants, nothing else to do at this point. He has front teeth that I'm sure will have the same problem before long, as these have been capped for years after root canals. The pain gives him fits. I know this is tough for you.
Well I now work outside, and our [2008-06-09]
weather has also been 100 in the shade for 6 days in a row. Unfortunately I can't stay in the shade. Thankfully I had the weekend off, but it was 100 or more degrees today. Apparently a cold front is coming through and it may only get to 98 tomorrow. Up until this it had been the perfect spring. I think I'm the only person wearing sunglasses, and even when I have them on I keep thinking I need sunglasses.

My problem was a bit different [2008-05-31]
I was substituting in a first grade class and we were dicussing state quarters. I actucally had a few so we passed them around the classroon. One didn't come back. I sent a note to the pricapal asking him to come to the room. In front of the class I explained what happened. He handeled it very diplomatically asking if anyone had the quarter. No one did. He said that hopefully by tomorrow morning the quarter would be on the teacher's desk with no questions asked. He also stated to these kids that if someone was aware of who had the quater they could tell him in private and he would not tell anyone who told but they had a responsibility if they knew someone stole something.
The teacher I was subbing for lives right across the street from me so when I got home I told him what happened. He said when he got to school the next day the quarter was laying on his desk.
We still don't know who took it (although we have our suspicions but we really didn't want to single out this child) although you have every right to cause you know who had it first.
I know mine was only a quater but it was really about honesty. I would talk to the principal and see what he/she has to say. If that is no help then I would call the parents.
I am going to visit my mom... [2008-05-25]

Stay away from Effexor --- Run from it!!! [2008-05-20]
A little background history: I am married and had just had my third child 6 months before this. I was juggling 1 PT office job, 1 PT MT job at home, and 1 per diem job in a clinic 2-3 days a week. I felt overwhelmed dealing with my 3 jobs and my 3 kids, then ages 5, 2-1/2 and 6 months. I went to my doctor and told her about my stress and the mood swings especially during my period.
I was started on Effexor 5 years ago this month. At first, I was kind of afraid of it and didn After taking it a week or 2, I decided to stop. I just quit taking it cold turkey. About 24 hours after my last dose, the problems started. First the awful headache came and then the lightheadedness and vomiting. I immediately took one and lied down for the rest of the evening. I decided I would just stay on them until my next doctor Several months later, when I saw my doctor again, she asked how it was going and I said fine. I decided to stay on them, thinking I needed them.
After a couple of years of being on Effexor, I began to notice breakouts of acne on my face. I I mean serious almost bullous-like breakouts on my face continuously. Now I had never had acne in high school or after that until now. I also gained about 50 pounds, probably partly my fault, but a lot of blogs I read also noted this. But most concerning were the brain tingles I felt at odd times. At any rate, after 5 years of being on it, I was ready to stop. I began to realize that my problems couldn't be solved by a pill and that I needed to change myself and the way I dealt with stress (I'm not suggesting that's what you need to do).
Remembering the problem I had initially when I tried to stop the Effexor, I scheduled a visit with my doctor. She gave me a taper and I started it. At first, I was okay -- just taking it once a day every 2 days and then skipping a day. But when I was supposed to take it just every other day, I noticed the same problems - headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting. I called my doctor back and she suggested a slower taper again. We tried with no success. After much research on the internet, I asked my doctor to prescribe a single dose of Prozac to counteract the withdrawal effects. After a lot of discussion, she agreed to do so.
I took my last Effexor on December 18, 2007, and I will never, ever, ever take that medication again. I also will never take another medication without fully knowing the side effects as well as the withdrawal process of it. I strongly urge you to research any drug your doctor prescribes fully before beginning it. I wish I had. I only hope there are no long-term side effects of Effexor that have yet to be unveiled.
After an absolutely crummy winter/spring... [2008-05-14]

We are expecting some 90+ degree days starting tomorrow into the weekend - and I for one am HAPPY! My poor halter tops haven't seen daylight for so long I forgot what they look like.

I agree with this rule BUT [2008-05-05]
I do understand why some people show up in the ER rather than at docsystem has decided that they lose money when people make a sick appointment for the next day. In their opinion, if you make an appointment to see the doc tomorrow because you feel unwell today... you may feel better tomorrow and not show up. Now they lose money because that slot is open. (Oh, and they do charge $50 if you don't show up.)
What this means is, if ISorry, we can
A lot of people in our area are completely frustrated with this nonsense. They end up going to the ER instead, because they'll be seen. We recently had to do this with my mother-in-law who had been running a fever between 100 and 101 for four days and tried three times to get an appointment with her doctor. She felt absolutely awful during all of that time. Turns out she had a sinus infection. All she needed were antibiotics, but she had to go to the ER in order to be seen.
Where do I live? Just outside of Philadelphia, sometimes called the Capital of Medicine. We have 6 med schools here, and umpteen hospitals, yet it's difficult to get appointments when you need them. On average, I wait 3 months for regular physical exams, and seeing specialists?? Forget it. You may wait even longer!
That's my rant for the day.

Suggestions [2008-04-28]
I would like to know if anyone has suggestions for this. It's a touchy subject with my sister so I never bring it up, it's regarding my nephews weight and suggestions to help him lose. I'm not a skinny minny (weight 190 pounds myself so its not like I'm a skinny person offering a just go on a diet suggestion -sis herself weighs about 230 pounds). Problem with nephew is he is mentally retarded (special, slow or whatever you want to call it). He turned 20 years old this past November but he still plays with Power Rangers, watches cartoons, and has the mind of a 12 year old in some ways. He does not have the capacity to think like a regular 20-year-old. So...he is overweight....way way overweight. I don't live back there but sis says he weighs 340 pounds and he eats like a pig. She can control his eating pattern while he is at home but the problem is he eats like no tomorrow at work. He also has his bike andwill ride down to McDonalds. She's had people she knows watch him and when he's caught he tells these people to mind their own business. Sis and her DHhave talked and talked to him, but nothing sinks in. He tells them he is not fat. She got so mad one time because he refused to listen that she told him he was the size of a pregnant woman. . He became very irate and was screaming and yelling he was not. Then proceeded to bang his head into the wall in one of his fits. He has these a lot when he's caught doing something wrong or is upset about a problem. He does not know how to handle emotion so he balls his fists up and punches himself over and over in the head or bangs his head against the wall. She took him to his pediatrician and the pediatrician told her there is nothing wrong. She was livid. I told her to take him to a regular doc and she said he can still see the pediatrician up until 21. I didn't say anything because she gets very defensive but I almost said he may be a child in the mind, but he has the body of an adult now. They adopted him from south america, so not sure what health problems or body habitus people from that country have (some countries have naturally large people - like Samoans and other cultures). He also haswhat could be the onset of early diabetes, although the doc never came out for sure and told her he has it. I told her that the only thing I am worried about is that ifhe doesn't get his weight down or if his diabetes gets out of control hethe worst scenario would be that he could have problems and end up losing toes, foot, hand, or whatever. She said to me, oh sure, that's all we need is to give him nightmares. I told her not to tell him because he can't handle it, but if she doesn't do something she needs to know this is the worse that could happen. She said she was thinking about taking him to weight watchers and I told her I doubt very much he would listen to the speakers there. I've seen these commercials for weight loss pills, but of course am very skeptical about weight loss products advertised on TV. Does anyone have any suggestions. The only thing I can think of is getting him to both a regular doc or nutritionist and also a psychiatrist to help deal with his I'm not fat attitude (I certainly can offer no intelligent suggestions to her as I have no idea how to deal with her situation). However, she can't afford either doc or psychiatrist so wanted to come up with some suggestions to offer her.

last week theirs was showing up already in direct deposit for a post date of Monday, April 28. I heard there will be direct deposits all this week for those who had their tax refund direct deposited. Keeping my fingers crossed as I should be in the next group.
