Lupus/Imuran [2008-02-08]
Imuran is an immunosuppressant, used in organ transplants also. Itsuppresses you white blood cells as thetheory is that when suppressing/killing white blood cells, Imuran will also suppress and hopefully kill the lupus cell, which is a white blood cell that has gone wrong and turned against the good healthy white blood cells. Thelupus white blood cell, hence, takes over the healthy white blood cells. It destroysthe good white blood cell and becomes a black dot in the center of the white blood cell and then the lupus white blood cells attack the organs andtreats them as foreign material. So, Imuran suppresses the white blood cell from attackingthe personThe sore throat could be caused by it, as it makes your immune system lower so you are moresusceptible to colds.

How did it suppress your immune system?
I have been on it for just about a week and am having stomach problems which my doctor warned me about (I also have Crohn's disease, SLE, and diabetes).
I have had a pretty consistent sore throat/scratchy throat since starting it. No other cold symptoms though. Also, charlie horses, headache.
I to take Plaquenil and Remicade infusions.
I was hoping to find out if the sore throat was related to this, especially since there are no other symptoms. thank you

I was wandering if anyone out there is taking or has ever taken Imuran (azathioprine). I was just started on it by my rheumatologist for Crohn If any has taken this medication I really need to know if what I am feeling is normal. thanks, debbie

I took Imuran for years for SLE. I still take it on and off but mostly take Plaquenil now. I had no problems with it other than it depressed my immune system.

I am so happy to hear you were able to be weaned off the prednisone. My physicians have tried me on methotrexate, CellCept, Imuran, etc. in an attempt to help me wean, but my body definitely does not tolerate this class of drugs well at all and I am sicker on them (extreme nausea, vomiting, fatigue). Seems the prednisone is the only thing that helps, and as much as I hate having to take it, I have to be able to function at work, etc, so have just learned to accept it
What dosage of methotrexate are you on? I think I was taking12 mg a week. Actually, out of the above drugs, that is probably the one I tolerated the best! However, I did notice the longer I was on it the more fatigue I had, in addition to losing hair in gobs (I don't have much hair to spare!). Have you tried taking folic acid with the methotrexate? I heard it helps with the GI symptoms and mouth ulcers.
I tried to take Fosamax, but it would make me pass out. I think it is a very rare side effect, but I couldn't take that drug either. Also, in 2005 I had to be admitted to the hospital due to diplopia caused by the inflammation from the LH in my pituitary gland, received massive doses of IV steroids and developed glaucoma and serous retinopathy. NOT FUN! The glaucoma resolved, but have permanent damange from the serous retinopathy
