Subject: years x pack per day I recall Vera Pyle's book explains it. But you can google search on pack-year smoking and it tells you that it is packs per day times years smoked equal pack-year history...

Subject: Dosepak vs. dose pack I know this has been asked 100 times, but i would like some clarification advise from anyone willing to give it!! Medrol Dosepak is a brand name and should be typed as such; however, i see so many times MTs typing Dosepak on things like prednisone and Sterapred. I cannot verify that anything other than Medrol should be Dosepak but is there some sort of unwritten rule i missed??? Help!! Any and all advise is appreciated.

A 5-pack-year history means an average of a pack a day over a 5-year period. That could mean someone smoked 5 packs per day for 1 year, or 1 pack per day for 5 years, or half a pack a day for 10 years, or any other combination that fits.

Subject: I agree wholeheartedly. Research is a must or you might as well pack it in and look into a different line of work altogether. Sometimes, however, you can research till the cows come home and not find something that ends up being so simple you feel like a dunce. I know I wouldn't be offended and, in fact, I've bookmarked lots of websites offered by MTs on this board. I know I appreciate the work involved in finding them. And, yes, anyone should double check the answers they get but, if they don't, they're only hurting themselves as it may cost them their jobs down the line.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I am very confused on the smoking history of patients. The dictator will dictate that he has a 20-pack-year history of smoking. What does this mean exactly? Certainly it does not mean they smoked 20 packs per year? I had a doctor say he had a HEAVY smoking history of 40-pack-year and that still does not seem very heavy to me. Just curious, I have been typing it so long and have no idea what it means. TIA
