Anyone had an endometrial ablation? (sm)

I am tired of these monster periods....I have heard that some people are now having endometrial ablations rather than hysterectomies...a friend of mine had one and has no more periods. However, the sites that I read say that it only reduces bleeding and only temporarily. Anyone know? Is there another name for the procedure I am thinking of that causes permanent ending of the period without having a surgical hysterectomy?

Endometrial ablation
I went back through the forum search and found ladies who were glad they underwent this. I'm scheduled for it in a couple weeks and I am wondering if y'all still felt the same about it, or if any more of you have had it done?
I know that NO periods are not guaranteed afterward, but I must confess I'm hoping for this result. I'm 50, so maybe I'm close to the end of menses anyway. One can only hope!
endometrial ablation
I had one in December 2005 and I've been quite pleased. It stopped my periods and my cramps. My periods had gotten quite painful and I'd bleed for days, so my GYN advised me to do this, so I did, and I'm very happy that I did. I've had absolutely no problems whatsoever.
How long for endometrial biopsy results to come in? sm
I am chomping at the bit here. When should I call them if they do not call me? Thanks, ladies!
Ablation
And it was the best thing I could have done! Didn't take long to do the procedure, under anesthesia...out of the hospital in about 2 hours. Quite a bit of pain afterwards that night, but the next day I was good. I would highly recommend this procedure. It's been a lifesaver for me. Good luck! 
Ablation?
Anyone every had an ablation? Is anyone in perimenopause and having a lot of symptoms? I am 47 and think that's what is going on. I have been told I should have an ablation done on the uterus. Any suggestions? Heavy "P" is a real drag lasting 3 weeks or more. WIll this procedure help?

I had one almost two years ago. It didn't work for me. I just underwent a supracervical hysterectomy on Tuesday....
Go for ablation
I am 45 and had been having trouble with my periods for the last couple years. Doc said not perimenopausal. I disagreed! I had the procedure done and did have alot of pain with it that night, but the next morning it was gone. It is the best thing I have ever done. It has been about 6 months and I have one "afternoon" I spot and that is it. I would recommend it to anyone. 
Uterine ablation.
So you had the ablation, which helped heavy bleeding, but did nothing for the PMS symptoms? I was going to have that done, but I felt there were not enough studies to show that it was safe. Light spotting each month would be great instead of the heavy periods causing back and leg pain. PCP thinks I have endometriosis, but nothing on pelvic ultrasound. I have thought about laparoscopic exploration, but now it seems to be better (not as painful in the back or legs) for the last two months. Oh gosh... neverending story.... 
I would decline the IUD - that is the ablation's job
Every literature strongly states an ablation is not for anyone who plans to get pregnant as it kills the lining of the uterus and cannot support a pregnancy. When I had the period at the end of the steroids, I was expressing strips of endometrial lining about 2 mm wide and just under 1 cm long that were pitch black. I even had that with the second the third periods.
I had an IUD infection when I was in my late teens and would not recommend one to my worst enemy, although my daughter has a 10-year IUD. You need to ask if the IUD that is recommended releases hormones. Most do these days. Personally, I would see no difference between OCPs and a hormone releasing IUD. My daughter has few periods...only about 1 every 3-4 months...but they are intense.
I guess your doctor is just trying to be doubly certain you don't get pregnant, but for me, I would refuse the IUD after an ablation. I have transcribed reports on different ablations, and from the technique I think NovaSure provides the greatest chance of having a successful ablation. (my GYN offered 2 different ones and after I read up on both, I choice the NovaSure).
Since you are in a relationship, you certainly don't want to take a chance on getting pregnant again. I haven't been with anyone since my ablation (long story, but a personal choice) so unless I drink something in the water, I would have a miracle conception! You could always decide about the IUD later if you were not happy with the ablation results.

Had ablation 3 years ago, having hysterectomy
I first asked my GYN about a hysty when I was 38. I was very irregular and never knew when I would start, except that I figured out that the days I stood in the shower and cried my heart out was always the day prior to starting. He said I was too young.
Fast forward to age 43. GYN recommended lap supracervical hysty but agreed to trying Novasure ablation to buy some time. For the past 3 years, I had only light spotting for half a day and my emotions were better, but still I felt I was overly emotional than what I expected from the surgery.
In January I had to take a Medrol Dosepak for something. On the same day as my last dose, I had a full-blown period. I have now had 3 in 40 days. They are worse than ever. I'm scheduled for a hysterectomy on Monday.
If you do consider an ablation, my advice is to stay away from steroids! It did buy some time for me, but combined with another health problem I have had (IBS/celiac sprue), I have been miserable for a year and I'm eager for this surgery!
A very good friend of mine had ablation and no regrets.
She has no more periods. This is just a little over a year, and she was having very serious problems, had to have transfusion twice due to the heavy bleeds prior. She was willing to try this before hysterectomy, and it worked for her.
