insomnia

Some people are able to sleep well with valerian.  On others it seems to have the opposite effect, I have taken it at times and usually it tends to make things worse.  Have tried many things for insomnia,  presently using  neneric Xanax 0.125 or 0.25 if the 0.125 doesn't work.   Some times I use Ambien as I do not like the idea of  using a habit forming drug like Xanax.

He is tired a lot, but I put that down to the insomnia - sm
He goes to bed at 9 or 10 and wakes up at 2, so living on 4-5 hours of sleep a night would make you a bit tired. No jaundice. He has some body ache from time to time, but figure that is normal aging. He only gets nausous after cooking. He cannot eat right after cooking, his mom is the same way though. He does not have a good appetite though, that has been getting gradually less and less, eats a light lunch and dinner, no snacking thoughout the day, though he has not lost weight, probably because of the beer though. He has had a lot of stomache upset lately, so if I get get him to a GI doc maybe we will discover only gallstones. He has had a couple kidney stones already, though he only mentions them after the fact. I told him he has to keep the stone so we can get it checked/analyzed to see what type of stone it is. He is an ostrich with its head in the sand. I just dread if anything ever serious is diagnosed as he will most likely refuse treatment which I think is insane. I have a very strong will to live and we have 2 kids, so it is hard to understand. AS for the other comment on the will, yes we did that years ago, and we both have life insurance as well so in that respect I'd be okay, but I'd rather have him here, not in the ground.
Any advice for insomnia? sm
Does anyone take any herbs or anything for insomnia?   I can't sleep at all and I don't want to take sleeping pills or even see a doctor.
IDEAS FOR INSOMNIA
I have not had a good nites sleep for months....going thru menopause and while I can fall asleep I never sleep more than 2-4 hours at a time...I AM EXHAUSTED!  Help....need ideas
Insomnia from night sweats

Well, I have to admit to myself that I am entering menopause. I find myself waking up between 5-10 times per night with night sweats. Throw off covers, lift up T-shirt, try to cool off, drift to sleep, wake up freezing, pull down T-shirt, pull up covers. Ugh.

Any women on here with good herbal remedies for night sweats? Have been doing alot of reading and research and now am totally confused.

My doctor is no help at all. Will not even ask her.

Thank you.

Insomnia for years - take 5 mg Ambien (sm)
practically every night. I know I shouldn't but if I don't sleep, I get crazy.  Have to really talk dr into it every time I go.  I'll probably never be able to get off it.  There are a lot of people in our family who have it also.  I would be really wary about any anti-anxiety meds, though.  Friend took them for a long time and has to be on a bunch of different medications just to get off those.  It's a vicious cycle.
To poster below on insomnia and menopause

Oprah will be a very informative show today on us women going through menopause.  Dr. Christine NOrthrup is the guest and she's wonderful - there'll be lots of good tips for eating right, controlling our hormones, sleeping well, etc.  It's all about the mind/body connection which I wholeheartedly believe in too.  Catch the show if you can.

Insomnia, heart fluttering, tired (sm)
all of that too?
it's the only thing that works for my severe insomnia
i have tried everything else.  it's amazing how it is impossible for me to get to sleep.  even when i'm exhausted and think i don't need anything, my insomnia is so severe i cannot sleep unaided.  i think my "off-switch" is broke.  i get so jealous of people who yawn and say they're tired.  my friends can call me at 3 in the morning and i'm as bright and cheerful as if it's noon.
