Equipment Words book. One of the best references around.

Stedman's Medical and Surgical Equipment Words is invaluable. nm
.
I would buy new a Dorland's Medical Dictionary, Stedmans Medical and Surgical Equipment...SM

and Tessier's The Surgical Word Book, 3rd edition.  Books you could buy used I would say would be Stedman's Pathology and Lab Medicine and Cardiology/Pulmonary word book.  These are all the books I use the most during my day.  You could buy other speciality word books as you need them and could probably go used with those.

I wouldn't bother with buying a drug book, new editions come out every year and I just stick to the FDA website and RXList as my drug references.

Also FYI, not a book, but I use my Stedman's Electronic Medical Dictationary a lot.  It's easier to open the program than it is to pick up a huge 30-pound dictionary.

Surgical Word Book (Tessier, NOT Stedman's). nm

Stedman's Medical Dictionary
I want to move a custom Stedman's medical dictionary to another computer (the one the MT created).  Does anyone know how to do this?  Thanks !
Stedman's medical dictionary software

Has anyone had any experience with the Stedman's medical dictionary software?  I will be starting with a new company at home soon and I'm wondering about compatibility, etc.  Any info would be appreciated!  Thank you!

Smartype and Stedman's Medical Dictionary are 2 different things.
The Smartype is a word Expander of all the medical terms, but the dictionary is the actual words with definitions.  :)
Don't need a medical dictionary, but you should have the Stedman's spellchecker loaded. Can

Stedmans Med & Surgical Equip words and Tessiers Surgical Word Book (3rd Ed). I'd be lost
without them.
Stedmans Med $ Surgical Equip words, Path and Lab words, and Tessiers Surgical Word book (3rd
edition).  I never buy drug books anymore.  Waist of money in my opinion.  New drugs come out so often, it's best to use the web.
Stedman's phrase book vs. Medical Phrase Index? sm
I'm debating between the newest edition of the MPI versus the Stedman's phrase book. Have had experience with the MPI, but not the Stedman's one. Is Stedman's worth it?
Medical Word Book by Sloan, Surgical Word Book by sm
Tessier, Dorland's dictionary, BOS, and my very fave I think is now out of print but called Spellright by Rice.
Stedman's Med Dictionary and Stedman's Med Spell checker are two different programs. Which on

do you have?  If it is the medical dictionary, as far as I know it is only a reference software and can't be used as a spell checker.

If you have the spell checker, go into Word.  Click on Tools, Options, and then Spelling & Grammar tab.  Then click on the Custom Dictionaries button about half way down the window.  This will open a new window that lists your available dictionaries and one should be checked.  Mine is checked next CUSTOM.DIC (DEFAULT).  There is an ADD button to the right.  If you click it, you will be able to browse for your custom dictionary.

Hope that helps.

I have only used Stedman's. What are some differences in Dorland's and Stedman's?

surgical terms
Why don't you invest in ref. books? Trying to do this job without them is like trying to build a house without a hammer for goodness sake. I don't understand you people - always looking for top pay and taking the cheap way out to do your job without proper tools.
Surgical Transcription

Hello.  A local surgery hosptial is hiring im my area. I've been transcribing psych and technical material for 6 years. Anyone know of good web sites for daily surgical transcription, what to expect in common surgeries and any resources for surgery brush up?

Thanks

Surgical account..
I am trying to get a local surgical account but my problem is they currenlty send their dictation overseas.  However, they are having to pay their nurses extra to edit/correct them because the finished report is of very poor quality.  Here are my questions....Does anyone know how the average of what companies pay for overseas transcription?  I don't want to sell myself short but I also don't want to work for nothing.  Do I have an advantage because I am local and will provide a "finished" correct report?  I am getting a proposal ready and want to make sure I have covered everything.  Thanks
Surgical accounts
I have two surgeons, surgical-oncology and I charge 0.12 cpl gross lines with pick up, print and deliver.  I do about 10,000 to 12,000 lines per month.  Very few procedures but lots of consults. H&P's and letters where I make my money.  Can do close to 500 lines per hour with them.
Surgical margin
"if-nas-co" surgical margin negative for tumor.  Pleural fibrovascular adhesion was mentioned just before that.  Any thoughts as to what "if-nas-co" actually is?
The Surgical Word Book
is the best!  I do almost exclusively OP notes and I couldn't do it without this book.  Steadman's is also excellent, but if you get Steadmans you will have to get two books (Equipment Words and Surgery Words).  The Surgical Word Book has both together in one book.
Surgical nursing books.

IMO, yes. I would love to be a surgical tech.
No money for school, nobody to make the house payment while I'm in school (if I had money to go), etc., etc.  I'll be toughing it out for 11 more years till the house is paid off.
Surgical removal of a baby????
I had that one yesterday and thought how strange to work delivery that way. If you ever work on Escription you will get a lot of laughs - it is voice recognition and I have had a ROS that said the man came in through the garage until the cat fell from the sky - have no idea what that was supposed to mean.
All different word books, surgical

A dictionary is not going to be near enough for acute care.  You're going to come across many different instruments, techniques, procedures, etc.

The "particular" factor will relate to the client's specific instructions, i.e. expanding, not expanding, symbols, most likely BOS compliant, verbatim, etc.

I agree = cervical not surgical

I just use the surgical word book. There
are three pages of bandages in there.
The Surgical Word Book is the Bomb for me!
It has so much in it besides surgical stuff. I then use Quick Look Drug Book, Stedman's Dictionary, and Sloane's Med Word Book. I love books but Google as well - usually double reference. And, let me not forget, the BOS2

Medical Transcription In The Era Of Electronic Medical Records
EMR has revolutionized the healthcare industry in recent times. Many experts felt that EMR & Voice Recognition would totally replace Medical Transcription - however; the industry soon realized that transcription has certain advantages over point & click charting and many physicians preferred to dictate notes rather than document the data at the point of care themselves.
Anybody know of any good sites for surgical term reference? nm

Tessier's as mentioned & Surgical Word Book

By far, Tessier Surgical Word Book! The Bomb!

At ease, soldier! This isn't a medical document. I repeat, this isn't a medical document. nm

I've thought about coding. My DH does medical coding and I think with an MT's medical termino

background and anatomy and physiology knowledge, a transition into coding wouldn't be hard at all.  From what I can tell by looking through my husband's books, an MT would have to learn insurance regulations and legalities.  We've basically got all the medical background down or we should be if we're worth our salt as an MT.

I even contacted AHIMA and found that the qualifications for taking the CCS or CCP coding exams are completion of the a coding program, RHIT program, or RHIA or related work experience.  Transcription is part of HIM, albeit the red-headed stepchild of the HIM department, but a part nonetheless and so satisfies the qualification of having work experience.

The test is tough though.  My husband didn't pass it his first time out and I think I read something like only 20% or so pass it the first time.  So it would probably be best to take some sort of formal coding class, in my opinion.
