Does anybody have a GOOD home remedy for fleas...

Posted By: MI MT on 2005-08-30
In Reply to:

I have two "sons" (shih tzus), one has long hair and the other has short hair.  My short haired baby has fleas that I cannot get rid of.  I have tried all kinds of over the counter medicine and I have done everything including cleaning this house top to bottom and bathing him 3 times a week.  One would think the long haired one would have them worse, but he doesn't.  He enjoys being groomed though and brushed daily whereas my short haired guy thinks the brush is a toy.  I used the Zodiac line last year and had absolutely no problems at all but it is just not working this year.  Any good ideas would be appreciated!!!!

Need a home remedy

I am hoping someone out there has a home remedy for me.  I went swimming 3 days ago and immediately got a clogged ear.  I tried Debrox for the last 3 days...nada.  Went out and got some Swim-Ear today...again nada.  I don't have insurance at the moment so I really dont want to go to the doc for this but I am tired of trying to work with one ear.  Help??  Anybody got any ideas????

home brewed flea remedy

I went nuts googeling for answers and here is what worked for me (still amazed it did).

Vacumn thoroughly then spread boric acid (Borax detergent) over the carpets and any areas your boys frequent.& spread salt (..mine loved under my desk so needless to say, my ankles were a mess)  Leave the Borax down for 1/2 hour..this is supposed to kill the fleas and dehydrate the eggs.  Then bath them using Dawn dishliquid and you see the fleas fall off!  I also used a flea trap one site recommended.  Put a low glass container filled halfway full with water & a few drops of detergent in it.  Then put a gooseneck lamp directly over it.  Supposed to attract the fleas and boy does it!  They say fleas are blind and only jump onto a moving, warm object, so not sure how the trap works but it does.  My little guy had his tail half chewed to shreds and I did not want to have to bomb the place because of the hassle with him and the cat and my allergies.

It's been three weeks now and all seems to be clear...I think I got most of this info off paws.com or something like that.  HTH

Anyone have a home remedy for loss of taste/smell?

This sinus cold has been dragging on for nearly 2 weeks now..going on day 5 of absolutely no sense of taste or smell....soooooooo tired of this

home remedy for loss of taste/smell
How about zinc? I was told years ago that this helps with loss of taste and smell.
REMEDY
THIS REALLY WORKS - WE USE IT ALL THE TIME. GOT THIS FROM A DIVER.
USE 50% HYDRO PEROXIDE AND 50% ALCOHOL AND WITH AN EYEDROPPER AND TOWEL LAY WITH EAR UP AND DROP ABOUT 3 TO 5 DROPS IN EAR. IT WILL FEEL WIERD AND BUBBLE, ETC. WAIT TILL IT STOPS BUBBLING, DRAIN, AND REPEAT ABOUT 3 TIMES. SOMETIMES YOU WILL FEEL THE EAR POP OPEN. SOMETIMES YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT AWHILE AND DO IT AGAIN. USE THIS ON MY KIDS AND HUSBAND ALL THE TIME. LITTLE ONE LIKES TO SWIM IN THE BATHTUB! GOOD LUCK!!
The best way to remedy that ...sm
I get paid per minute of dictation.  Always have for the hospital I work for as an IC.  The way to count lines varies way too much.  I once read an article by a doctor (I think it was a doctor) that this was the fairest way to pay production MTs.
How about a cold remedy?
I get great relief from colds with Zicam. (I also take 50 mg of oral zinc, which boosts the immune system). I use the Zicam when the cold is in my nose, with runny nose, sneezing, congestion. To open your sinuses you might want to try Rhinocort. You'll need a Rx for it, but it is good stuff. It's safer than Afrin (which works great but can't be used for more than three days, and can raise your BP). Oh, and chicken soup may help.

Hope you are feeling better soon.
Try this remedy, works for me. sm
Try putting some hydrocortisone cream on the spotchy areas.  If you feel itchy, take some Benadryl as well.  When you go to sleep, don't wear any underwear so the rash dries up and scales over.  If you have to sit all day and type, don't wear any underwear either and stand.  It will be hard, but you must let the rash dry up. And don't scratch as it may become infected.  When I get hemorrhoids, I use Anusol.  I hate it when I get diarrhea, as it flares up my condition.
McFingers, a possible remedy. s/m

I am not sure if this might work or not, however worth a try???

1. Click start. 2. Go to control panel. 3.  Click appearance. 4. Click advanced. 5. Scroll down to Window. 6. From there you can change the background color and text color of Word. For example I use a light green background and dark brown text for Word.

ants remedy
I know this sounds ridiculous, but it works.  Used to have terrible ants, especially around by cat bowls because cat food contains protine which ants like.  Found this on line.  Simply use laundry dryer sheets - they hate the smell.  Also bay leaves from the spice department.  It works too.
PS on fleas

I forgot the vacuming up the Boric acid part and do keep sweeping for the next few days.  I went through vac. bags but it was worth it.  I also made the lemon spray up and used it for the first 2 days.

They are nasty this year.  I had Frontline on my critters and it did not work, went to the collars and with the above, all is well so far.

Fleas-be-gone
Okay, I worked for a vet for 30 years.  Here is my "flea speech".  It is easy to kill fleas on a dog, it is tough to keep them gone.  Fleas go through 4 life stages.  Egg, larva, cocoon and adult.  NOTHING will kill fleas in the cocoon stage.  Fleas can stay in the cocoon stage for different amounts of time but generally 2-3 weeks is the average.  When fleas come out of the cocoon stage they want to feed and they would rather feed on an animal than on a person.  It is only when the fleas are so prevelant in the environment, that they will get on a person. Basically, you need to treat the flea restaurant, your pet.  The best way to do that is with Advantage, Frontline or Revolution.  As far as which of these is the best, every situation is different and it is not a question of one of these being better, they are all different and and what works best for one person might not be the best product for their neighbor.  ALso, you need to treat ALL the pets in the environment.  Even tho you don't think the other one has fleas, you need to treat him so he doesn't become the "safe haven" for the fleas.  You can also treat the pets favorite areas but a good thing about the above named products, the chemicals will be in the flakes of skin that your pet sheds and that the larva feeds on, thus killng the larva before they even go into the cocoon stage. People think that these products are expensive, but in the long run it is much cheaper to buy them to begin with than to spend hundreds trying to get rid of fleas.  ALso, people tend to think of fleas as being a spring and summer problem but fleas are much worse in the fall.  That is why people think they have made it throught the flea season only to find themselves over run in the fall.  If you problem is so bad that you need to aggressively treat the environment, you need to get flea bombs and set them off and repeat in two weeks.  And dont skimp, better to do too much than not enough.  I am sorry this is so long, but fleas are not an easy situation to deal with but done right, you will be happy with the results.
Fleas

I used to work for a vet too.  You will find that cats are better carriers of fleas and less bothered by them.   I treat my animals more aggressive in late spring to fall and I do bomb twice a year.   I am always told by my vet and groomer that my dog is one of the least bothered by fleas than any animal they have seen.  So it works for me.  She just went to stay with my sister for 5 days and came back scratching and so am doing her flea bit again along with the cats and bombing this weekend.   I may go overboard a bit but it is well worth it in the end.

Fleas
Picked up my new Corgi puppy yesterday, and she has fleas!  My other 2 dogs (Cocker & Corgi) dont have a single flea and I dont have any flea shampoo (which probably can't be used on a puppy anyway).  Any quick natrual remedies I can do until I can get to the store?
Fleas
Try Frontline. They have one for puppies.
fleas

just went through this with a new pup.....bath in Dawn dish detergent (it's mild on their coats but kills fleas).

If you notice your other critters with fleas, then do same for them, use old fashion Borax detergent, sprinkle it in areas where the critters frequent (blocking it off from the dogs), sprinkle table salt also (dehydrates the fleas).

These remedies my vet gave me and between the other 2 dogs & 2 cats/3 kittens it saved my from total chaos.

fleas!

i've mixed a bit of garlic powder into dogs'/cats' food to deter fleas.  animals like it; fleas don't.

Fleas
Get some branches off of a sweet gum tree and lay them around the house. Before you know it, no more fleas. Don't know why it works, but we did that one year and have never had any more fleas.
Fleas
I know this might sound a bit wierd, but try vaccuming the dog/cat. If they get used to the sound when they are puppies/kittens, then the sound shouldn't frighten them. The suction from the vaccum will pull off any fleas, and there is no bothering with expensive shampoos or other things. Just a suggestion...
Anyone know of a remedy or way to lessen tinnitus?

What can we use on the yard for fleas? I got a
cocker spaniel a few months ago to go along with the cats but since the end of June/beginning of July we have been fighting fleas. I'm surrounded by neighbors who both have 2 dogs but their backyard grass is about 3 feet high so now matter how much spraying I do in the yard, the fleas still comes back. I've had the yard and house sprayed a few times this month but the fleas keep coming. We never have a problem with fleas until summer months. I just wish the neighbor would cut his grass more than 3 times a year.
Fleas and air conditioning...sm
Do you think that a flea would die if it were to come into a house that is really cold.  We keep our air very, very cold and everyone around has had a horrible time with fleas.  But we let our two cats come in and out as they wish and tonight is the first night I have noticed fleas on one of my cats.  Let me tell you it was the whole flea family.  So I rushed him in and bathed him with flea shampoo....It seems like I heard somewhere though that cold kills fleas (if they were to jump off the cat).  Has anyone ever heard of this?  I just hope that I got them before they became a problem in my home.....
Good one, Home MT....

I had been using www.healthgrades.com but you have to go through a long convoluted trail of clicking through specialties and cities and agreeing to disclaimers.

I like your site.  It is straight forward and takes partial names.

Thank You!!!

lice...old fashion remedy works best...been there
this was an ongoing problem year after year after year. With long hair being the normal thing, was a pain. AND after spending a small fortune on the over-the-counter lice crap that NEVER worked and we seemed to have them again and again...one egg can start it all again...I went for my grandmothers solution.

SIMPLE...GOOD, CHEAP OLD FASHIONED KEROSENE.

Not fancy...smells horrible, BUT did the trick.

You will have to use a very VERY gentle shampoo after soaking the head but once I did this, it was literally the end of them. No re-infestations...no repeat soakings...one time...shampooed with baby shampoo about 3 times and next day deep conditioned for dryness. Her hair and mine was fine.

just my 2 cents
If only air conditioning killed fleas!! No way!!
I rescued 2 kittens about 6 months ago, and they blessed my house with love and fleas!! I wasted 6 months using Frontline on kitties and dogs - forget it! Infestation crisis! I finally had the sense to switch to Advantage and its a miracle. Much less expensive than Frontline, and way more bang for your buck!! After the initial application of Advantage on 2 cats and 3 dogs, just had to reapply after 2 weeks, and now we are on top of things. No more fleas, though I will continue to use for months more. I hate using this toxic stuff, but my dogs are flea allergic. Nearly killed them. I would give Advantage a shot once just to make sure you didn't miss any fleas. And we keep our house frigid - doesn't bother them one bit. In fact, I picture them laying around in floor cracks and furniture, on little flea lounge chairs with pina coladas!!
Yes - cold does kill fleas
it's called WINTER not air conditioning........ROFLMAO!  Are you for real?
Good idea, esp. if in your home...nm

Good ideas - but most want to be at home! sm
I work more being at home, albeit not in 8 straight hours, but I get more work done at home with more lph working in 2-hour shifts throughout the day. Working in the office would not cut it for me. I have been working at home for 16 years now, no way will I go back to an office. So, if you are looking for the seasoned MTs to work in the office with the newbies - good luck with that!

I think you have great ideas and it will work, you just might have to modify a few things along the way.

Best of luck to you!
Good to know. Thanks. I hope he has someone at home sm
who can do that for him. He'll just have to keep growing! Thank goodness no one has thought 20" is too small!
Dawn dish soap for fleas
I had this problem before with some kittens. Soak the pup down and scrub it up with dawn dish soap. Apparently the fleas get caught in the "bubbles" and suffocate. Leave this on the puppy for about a 1/2 hour to an hour then rinse. Keep in mind that this does work BUT dry skin occurs.
Teenagers good to be home with - I did the same thing
Once had an argument with my boss working in the office, because my hours were supposed to be 7-3, or 3:30.  I was on salary (can you believe that) at the time, and she expected me to stay till 5 or 6.  She herself used to practically live there.  I told her no, I wanted to be home with my kids, and she said they weren't babies anymore and didn't need me.  Well, I left everyday after that by 3:30, and believe U me, it is a very good idea to be able to monitor your teenagers, and I would do it again (God forbid I ever  had teenagers again)  They are all grown now.
Good thing you work at home
Hopefully one day when you need to vent, you at not treated the way you treat others but what goes around does come around.
Another good idea is Home Depot
My friend used to work in the travel industry, which has also gone down the tubes pretty much as a result of technology.

She's a very talented Martha Stewart type of person and always has a yard that's the envy of the neighborhood. She's seriously thinking of applying at Home Depot's home and garden department to give people advice about their yards. She said it pays well and the same with the benefits.

If you're talented in any type of home decorating, home repair, or horticulture I'd say apply at the Home Depot or maybe Lowe's!
Good for you. I love my local at home job.

can't imagine doing good work at home
(no buddy-help) without MT training, and getting good QA scores. There's too bloody-much detail anymore, ie, all the BOS rules, on top of account specifics, terminology, accents, etc... I have seen a couple people pick up the terminology and do well with only on-the-job training in the hospital setting, but that seems rather rare.
Need a good recipe for home brew flea dip
I have a shih-tsu and 120 pound lab/blue tick hound. Needless to say, Savannah would cost me an arm and a leg with conventional dips. If anyone knows of a good home brew I would surely appreciate it.
What is a good inexpensive small home printer.

Maybe that's a good thing - it's a reason for the Indian docs to GO HOME

I make very good money at home with a small MTSO

What a perfect analogy! Shoot, I switched offices in my own home and it took a good 2 wks

I'm going to type an acct at home for local group. What is a good word expander for

things to know on doing tapes from an office?  Is it best just to give them a disk and let them print it out at the office like they want to?

Anybody doing an acct like this?  Thanks.

Union diesil mechanic - good pay, great benefits. We swap year to year on who brings home more sm
money.....but I am an IC and he has all the benefits...health insurance/dental that the company pays for, pension plan, 401k, etc.  Factor all of that in and he makes way more than I do.
My kids have suffered greatly from me working at home with them home. SM
I have been working at home as an MT since my two kids were born. They are now 4 and 5. In the first few years, I had no help whatsoever. Their father was a bum who didnt work or take care of them while I worked. Your children get neglected while you work basically. And babies and young children desperately need your attention while they are home with you.

My kids have so many behavioral problems right now because of their neglect. I would try to set them up with things to occupy themselves, like coloring or a movie, etc.

I finally put them in day care and things have improved, but there are still a lot of issues because of the damage that was done. They still try to seek attention by doing bad things and they dont listen to me because they are so used to me letting them get away with a lot of stuff because I was too busy typing to discipline them in their early years.

If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have put them into day care from the very beginning.

My advice would be to seek PT care for your baby. Maybe you can do some work around her schedule a little when she is home, like when she takes a nap, and then bang out a bunch of work while she is in day care.

I enjoy being alone at home, but I've got one home sick from school already.

One on one with a kid is nice, too.

This summer has been absolutely crazy.  I haven't had a moment to myself for three months because all of my kids were home traipsing their friends through the house and yard.  My husband switched his work schedule, too, so he's around more than usual.  However, I like not having to do two loads of dishes and four loads of laundry a day.  There are no toys or clutter dragged out everywhere.  I can clean the house first thing in the morning, and it stays clean until everyone gets home at night.

I even got to relax with a cup of coffee and watch TV for half an hour this morning, something I liked for a change instead of cartoons or kids' movies.  I signed up for an online class that I've been wanting to take.  I can exercise without being interrupted.  Yesterday, I went to the mall and spent all my saved up gift cards.  I got some clothes, books, bath stuff, and a new coffee mug.  My work gets done a lot faster, too.  Call me nuts, but I've never had the luxury of being alone in the house for 14 years.  It's kinda nice.  I love my family with all my heart, but I love having a few hours to myself each week, too.

Except now the cat and dogs have been acting weird since the kids went back to school.  They must think that I need someone or something to clean up after and correct behavior on.  They're getting into everything and racing around the house behind me.

my take is that she worked inhouse, not at home, and now wants to find out how to work at home. nm

Forget "per line." Your take-home pay should be taking home SM
roughly what it was before. If it is not, is it because your current pay rate for editing (which in many companies keeps changing as the VR system is developed) is too low or is it because your talents and skills are more for speed typing than speed editing?

If the first, discuss it with higherups, and go get a new job if you don't get the response you need. My last MTSO was secretly refiguring how production was counted to pay us less. I can accept hard reality, it was the secrecy that burned. Sometimes, though, it's just that the learning curves of individual editors and that of the system aren't in sync, and you end up temporarily making less.

If the second, though, recognize it as soon as possible and change to straight transcription work, in your company or a new one, for as long as you can find it.

As for why we aren't paid more for a higher skill, that's just the way the labor supply ball bounces. Best wishes.
I think she means she has wireless TO her home, not IN her home..nm

hospital at-home -vs- national at home

I have an interview today with a hospital...work in-house for 3 months, then go home, paid on production. I don't know as of yet what they pay production, so my question is to anyone who works for a hospital at home AND has also worked for a national at home...

Which would be the best to choose? The hospital offers great benefits, but the national I work for now also has benefits, not as good as the hospital, though.  Any input would be most appreciated!

Ditto for me. Have done both outside the home and in the home. We all have
bad days, but I sure would not want to trade working at home for anything. Just being here for my kids is worth every bad day!
That is a good offer. Pay is not that good at UIMC. Good luck! nm
