GearPlayer works w/Vista

Posted By: mary on 2007-04-16
In Reply to: How do you play dictation in Vista? - Expressscribe does not work

My puter died 2 weeks ago and I had to get a Vista.  I called GearPlayer the other day and they walked me through the patch they have and I have been working fine since.  I had to take myself off as Administrator though and hope that isn't a problem in the future.  Good luck; installing everything back on including my Virus software was a pain.  I don't know why Microsoft does this to us!

Which Spellchecker works with Vista?

Can anyone tell me which medical spellchecker works with Vista?  I have Stedmans, but it does not work with Vista.  Thanks

Mine works with Vista
That's what I had to do is download that codec and mine works on .dss files. That's all I get from my neurologist
Version 10 only works with Vista. You need 9 for XP.

Been using Gearplayer
I have been using Gearplayer for what seems like forever and am soooo disappointed that it won't work with this new system.  Something about being able to have the company's software open the files through the player which Gearplayer won't allow.  I have tried Express Scribe in the past and hate that it reformats every audio file I have into an Express Scribe file.  On another note, with Bytescribe, powerplay, and Start stop.... they all work with a USB pedal if I have been informed correctly.... is that right?
Gearplayer
I use Gearplayer, GearXport and FTPtoday - It's Great!
gearplayer
While I do agree with the above poster's frustration about having to call transcription gear if your computer crashes (had that happen a few times myself -- well crashed once and got new computer a couple of times); had to get a new unlock code each time, but I was able to get mine right away, that is no longer true.  It is true they aren't available for you nights/weekends, which of course can be quite frustrating because if your computer is going to crash you can't ask it to please wait until a weekday; however, they now have an upgrade that you receive a HASP key with; once you install this upgrade you never have to ask for another unlock code.  I recently upgraded gearplayer and also installed a new hard drive on my existing computer so all I had to do was install gearplayer (go into their website and download their trial version) and then plug in your HASP key and, voila, there you have it.  No more calls, faxes to transcription gear.  It's about time they got with these "modern" times.  Now having said all that, of course, if one prefers Express Scribe over gearplayer, then that's your personal preference.  I've used Express Scribe and personally didn't like it.....but, to each his own, right?  Have a great evening!
gearplayer
I have used both, and others.  Gearplayer by far was the most frustrating, expensive, and inconvenient with their limited service hours/unlock codes, limited loads for backup computers, etc.  With many of us, it seemed that it was not 'friendly' with some other software on our computers and often would freeze up either the GP or our computers.  Just my 2 cents.
Gearplayer

I also have Gearplayer - The dictations are on a CD and open up with Media Player. How do I transfer over to my Gearplayer so that I may use my footpedal??? I have tranferred them over to my Gearplayer, but unable to open files!

Thanks for your help.

GearPlayer - anyone use it
Is it worth the money?  Are there any free players that work better - I have a USB port foot pedal.
GearPlayer - anyone use it
I love GearPlayer. I've been using it the past 2 1/2 years. I've tried express scribe and bytescribe before, but neither of those programs have a good tech support department. They have always taken forever to get back to me regarding problems, and sometimes never resolved my problems. I've experienced programs with my GearPlayer crashing before, and even losing of dictation files, but GearPlayer's tech support has always come through to help me and in one case, point me in the right direction so that I can even recover dictation I accidentally deleted! They are so friendly and very knowledgeable. I won't use those other programs again just because of great support I get with GearPlayer.
GearPlayer
I've used GearPlayer for about 5 years now - love it.

My latest company requires Express Scribe. It works, but I don't hear nearly as well as I do with GearPlayer.

I've gotten my money's worth out of it, but to me the contrast is a matter of getting what you pay for.
GearPlayer
If anyone has a GearPlayer system they want to sell, I would be interested in it.
FTP/GearPlayer
Does anyone out there have any experience using FTP sites?  I recently accepted a job that utilizes CoreLite and thus far I just can't get it to work for me.  I have always worked for large companies that don't use this method...so I really don't have a clue what I'm going wrong.  Also, I recently purchased a GearPlayer4 and I am having trouble with loading the voice files on that too.  I have called their Help Desk and thus far they haven't gotten back to me.  This is driving me crazy...I know I am "software/hardware challenged," and this is totally my fault, but hoping maybe someone here could point me in the right direction on where to seek help.  Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!
I need help with GearPlayer please!

This is the first work I've been sent.  I was not able to figure out GearPlayer in time to take the test, so I had to manually play the sound, type, etc.

I was told (here) that I could drag the sound file over the GearPlayer window and it would load.  I tried that tonight, but there was an error.  So I read some instructions from GearPlayer and it mentioned files have to be in HTML format, so you could save the file to your computer and then drag and drop it.  I tried that and I'm not getting an error message; it looks like it loaded fine, but when I use the footpedal all I hear is STATIC.  What is wrong?

RE: Gearplayer
I have it. When you take the test, it says you can open something on the right side, not keys on the left. You click on right side of mouse, save page as or link as, something like that. Window opens and it saves. Go to Gearplayer and check if it is there. Then highlight it and try to play with foot pedal. That is what I do. I have to download all mine to test. In process of all that right now, job hunting.
Gearplayer

Gearplayer can be downloaded for a 5-day trial.  After that, you have to order it from Transcriptiongear.com.  If you have a foot pedal (Infinity or any USB port foot pedal or 9-pin foot pedal),  you can just order the software itself.  I just ordered it and it took 4 days to get to me regular mail and it was $109.00 including tax.  If you don't have a foot pedal, then it is about $150. with the foot pedal and software.

I really like the gearplayer as it cleans up the audio quality on most hard-to-hear or scratchy audio files you may receive and you can slow it down much slower than with Express Scribe.  However, if you can make due with Express Scribe and save yourself some money, I would continue to use that.  The company I just started with, unfortunately, not all of their audio files are very clear and I found I needed the gearplayer for that reason.

I use GearPlayer and when I click (sm)
"start," "programs" and find "GearPlayer", when I highlight Gearplayer I'm given the option of "tools" and then I can test my footpedal. Just wondering if perhaps your footpedal will be controlled by whatever program you are using to run it? Try checking under your programs listed and see if there are any options there. Or try rebooting your computer, maybe and see if that resets something??? I hope these suggestions help you!!
Expresscribe vs. GearPlayer

They are both similar although I do find Expresscribe easier to work with.  Expresscribe is free - GearPlayer is not.  Also, you can only install GearPlayer once with the same install code.  If you need to reload it for some reason, you have to get written permission from customer service.  In my case, I had been nursing a 'sick' computer that finally crashed just as my new computer arrived late on a Friday.  After setting the new computer up, I called customer service to get a new install code - they don't work nights or weekends.  So I called them on Monday and they had to fax me a paper to sign stating I was requesting a new install code because my old computer had died and I was having to reinstall on a new computer (if you want to put it on 2 computers, you have to pay extra).  I faxed that piece of paper back and it was another 24 hours before they provided me with a new install code.  If I had known about ExpressScribe then, I would have just used that.  So don't waste your money on GearPlayer.

Where can I find GearPlayer?

Can you please tell me where you found gearplayer?  Do you have a link where you got it and the patch for vista?  I really am glad that you responded to me post.

Thanks so much

Karen

GearPlayer info..

You have to pay for it .  Their Customer Service is Great!

http://www.transcriptiongear.com/store/GP0.html?gclid=COm-rfm8x4sCFQMdSgodkHZkCw

Call their number under "Contact Us" and get their advice.  GP was recommended to me by a client I transcribe notes for and it's compatible with the dictating systems the doctors/nurses use.  Check all of this out.  You may have to contact the dictating machines' websites too that you transcribe for..   mary

What is a gearplayer license?
How is this obtained?
Gearplayer worked for me. sm
I think you emailed me, but in case not, Gearplayer is what finally worked for me. I tried for a week and never got my other foot pedals to work (I had 2 different Infinity ones). You can get it at transcriptiongear.com and foot pedal comes with it. Worked right away without any glitches like you describe.

Of course, doesn't change the fact that the platform is slow and cumbersome, but at least the pedal will work! LOL

Good luck
StartStop and GearPlayer both cost a bit...
...but I believe they have free evaluation/trial packages downloadable from the Internet.

Of the 2, I prefer GearPlayer. It is much clearer. I find the StartStop a bit scratchy.
GearPlayer comes with the foot pedal...
Express Scribe is just the software program
Is gearplayer a free program?

I have never used gear player before and was told that I would need to use the gearplayer software and a comparable footpedal to type files.  I am used to express scribe which is free and using my infinity foot pedal. Is gear player a free program like scribe or am I going to have to pay for it?

Does Express Scribe work like GearPlayer?.....thanks :)

If a service wants you to use GearPlayer, though, you can't substitute with ExpressScribe. nm
s
Bytescribe is good and more versitile than Gearplayer-sm
I tried that one first, all it did was make my computer crash/lock up constantly, never would work right. Now that about about 6 years ago; returned it for a refund and bought Bytescribe which I love. It works with all 3 of the different voice files I transcribe. The free player mentioned below works well too; and FREE so you have nothing to lose by trying it. There is another one, very similar name that is not free.
Full Word is in the Works "Suite," not plain Works.
Works saves files in a different format, but you can open them in Word if you have the correct filter installed.
Foot pedal. Gearplayer costs, but it is worth it! nm
:)
GearPlayer customer service stinks - if you need to reload onto another computer (i.e. you get a new
You have to call them to get a new install code, but first they have to fax you a request sheet to be completed and faxed back, then they have to okay the reinstall and give you a new code. They are NOT available after hours or on weekends, so if you have an emergency such a computer crash, you are out of luck.
GearPlayer 4 plays .sri files. That the latest version, and it is great! nm
nm
RIGHT!!! Someone who works 16 hours and someone who works 60 will have a HUGE difference. NM
.
I absolutely love GearPlayer 4, the newest version. It plays all files
and combine that with a good stereo headset, you'll be all set to go.  I am able to hear so well all sorts of dictators.  I cannot, and will not, work with Express Scribe, and I have found no other player as superior as GearPlayer.  They have a free download you can trial it for 5 days and see if works in your platform/voice files, found at transcriptiongear.com
Gearplayer, Cyberplayer, ExpressScribe,Transcription Buddy, Stop/Start questions

When you work for yourself which voice player do you prefer?  I have tried all of the above players and all of them seem to distort the voice when you slow it down.  Why can't these players slow down files like the platforms MTSOs use?

Emdat works with Instant Text Por V - ony version that works with Emdat - nm

Shorthand works with every program, it works outside the program you use, does not interfere.

VISTA
Has anyone done transcription in VISTA, the VA program? Just wondering how easy/difficult it is. I am starting a new p/t account soon and will be doing transcription in VISTA, and I know absolutely NOTHING about it.

Thanks in advance.
VISTA
Not easy to transcribe in VISTA. Can you transcribe using Word or WP and then upload your reports to VISTA? That would be simpler. VISTA has no spell check; it is very hard to make production in VISTA, as it was and still is an older version of word processing.
Vista
I'm not going with Vista either until the "bugs" are worked out. I've heard that many of our programs (Word 2003, WP, etc.) will NOT work with this. I'm sticking with XP for now.
Vista
Has anyone heard much about Vista, good, bad or otherwise?  I'm wondering if it's worth getting.
Vista
I don't know if Vista has this feature or not, but in Windows XP Pro, you can right click on a program icon, click properties..click compatibilities...click "run this program in compatibility for:" and then you could chose older operating systems, if you needed to.  If Vista or Vista Business Edition has this it might be an option.  I don't know how well it worked in XP because I never needed to use it.  Still, a lot of people seem unhappy with Vista for various reasons.  I'm afraid to try it for about a year until they get the bugs worked out.  If, heaven forbid my computer crashes, I'll re-load Windows XP Pro.
To vista or not to vista...

Microsoft's new operating system, Vista, was released a couple weeks ago.  We here at Emmaus have spent weeks studying the documentation, and making the necessary adjustments in our software to be Vista-friendly.  All the applications will now run just fine under Vista (and users installing onto Windows 2000 or WinXP will see no obvious difference).

But I do not think Microsoft designed Vista for the home computer. My impression is it is wonderful for a huge corporation, e.g. General Motors, but is going to give the home user fits.  Most older applications will not run reliably under Vista.  Most older printers will not work under Vista.  And forget about on-line banking and any site that needs an ActiveX control in a web page: They just won't work under Vista.

You see, Microsoft needed to improve security from hacker attacks. They accomplished this with an operating system edict: Applications must run as a limited user.  The consequence of that is programs have traditionally saved user data in their folder under Program Files.  Under Vista they can't do that. It must be saved to %LocalAppData% for a limited user, and for an Administrator to %AppData%. Although MS has tried a kludge to accommodate older programs (by use of what they have termed Virtual Directories), it isn't very successful.

I heard some television commentator saying that Vista was the best thing that ever happened to encourage Apple computer sales. Probably for the short term, he's right, but when Apple gets a user share of the market of 20 to 30%, then hackers will have a field-day wrecking Apples.

So, in my humble opinion, should you upgrade to a Vista computer? No. (But if you do our software, MPWord, MPTools and MPSentinel are ready for you.)

Best wishes,

Vann Joe

Do you use MS Vista? I need to have MS-XP
nm
Vista
i don't think MS will give a hoot about us and our programs, to be honest.  i think it will be the other way around...our IT people will have to re-design our programs to work with Vista.  and i doubt that any IT will be willing to start that endeavour until Vista had gotten the bugs worked out.  Stick with XP and let others find out what the problems are with Vista and wait for that to get resolved is my opinion.
vista

I got a new computer with Vista and I had to take it back.  It is not compatible with a lot of the transcribing programs.  Check with your company.  I am starting an ER account with KS and I think they use Extext.  They told me it would not work.
