I've been in it 23 yr and not good prospects...

As is my personal experience, my pay is going down every year... harder to find good smaller services, they have gotten gobbled up by the biggies, and the biggies just view us as number to crank out reports that they want to make more and more money as in profits for the company, and will resort to cheating, as in MQ et al. That is my view, I say get out while you still have use of your fingers and wrists :)

LOL! Well, good! I've done ONE good thing today, then. NM

Good for you...I've been there!
I was an IC for over 20 years. I was fortunate in one way, I lived in a small rural town with quite a scarcity of qualified MTs. Anyway, the third account I took on was a solo FP who told me upon receipt of his first bill (and having signed a contract agreeing to the rates) that he really couldn't justify paying that to someone "who isn't a professional." This is the same guy who sent me a ticked-off note because he didn't like the font I was using. Needless to say, I wished him the best of luck finding a replacement and I shut the door on that one quickly. Glad I did. I had to decide what my bottom line was and stick to it, and over the years it has only paid off to do that. Though I will admit it can feel scary to pull the plug on a paycheck!

Best of luck to you!
Thanks! I think I've now got a good idea how it all
ended. I thought it was one of the best episodes of this show that I've seen.
Good for you. You've got class.
That is a lesson you're passing on to your kids. I don't blame you for being upset, but you should be pround of yourself for not asking for a handout.
You are right. I've always said I'm just in a good spot. sm
I hope I have never acted like anybody wasn't good enough. I sure didn't mean to.
Just realized how good I've got it.
The company I work for pays for headers and footers, which total 13 lines per report. Given my line rate, I make the "per report" rate before I ever start typing! So everything I transcribe is gravy above and beyond. Sweeeeet.

I love my job.
I've been to several pig roast, very good! - sm
As for how to do it, that is if you go the pig route, make sure it is a pig roaster (huge) and have some one who knows what they are doing cook it. It takes quite a long time to cook 12+ hours or more, cannot remember if they started it the night before or not (our old neighborhood had one every year). Or if you don't want the trouble just say you are having a big cookout, go with corn on the cob, hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni salad, potato salad, etc. Obvious have everyone bring a dish if possible. If you know any with Sirius or the other satelite radio you can get some great music. We did both records/CDs and a live band at our pig roast and the annual crab feast. Yum! Had a lot of fun when we lived there.
We've had good luck with
Compaq notebooks. The one we have really has been tortured, but still works, although we've not had good luck with their desktops.

The other laptop we've had was a Toshiba satellite. Loved the keyboard and the screen, but nothing but trouble from the start. It had a severe overheating issue, and I've talked to a couple other people who had the same problem. That was a couple years ago, though, so they might have resolved that by now.

Good lord, obviously you've never
spent hours and hours correcting the same mistakes over and over again or you wouldn't even ask. I thought her post was right on the money.
Good job! I'd've never figured that out.
probably be easier to put a password on the computer so he (or anyone else) can't even turn it on.  Actually, I have no idea if it would be easier since I've never done this myself (my husband gets that my computer = $$$, so he is well controlled in that regard).
Now, RG, you know we've got darned good reasons...

to be crying in our soup over there.

It's good enough to do the job. I've got a Celeron and have no problems.
If you want to see benchmark test results, Google for benchmark Centrino Pentium Celeron. Honestly, the naked human eye can't detect much of a difference. It's not like we're comparing 386SX/33 processors to Pentium 4/3.06 GHz. Nothing like a little processor snobbery to justify spending more money.

Very good question! I've always wondered that myself. nm

you've got good reasons to vent

Sounds like you and Patti are great people to work for and I'm sorry you both are having to deal with this.  You sound like you are giving it all you've got and are still getting stung.  I hear the same from the place I work for.  It just seems a lot more people are more irresponsible and unprofessional than they were when I was raised back in the 50/60s.  If you're anywhere near my age, I bet it seems like a different world to you too.  I don't think it's just an MT problem -- I think it is widespread through all fields but unfortunately, in our profession we are confronted with it on a daily basis and it has to be resolved.

Although I am not a MTSO, I do overflow work from those who had other things to do and put the job second or hire on and then quit and I get their work and my own until they find someone else to hire and hope they stay.  I'm not that great myself by any means but I do get exasperated with the weak links who just don't care and do what you complain of in your first post.  It makes us all look bad.

As an MTSO you are stuck between the doc and the MT.  Doesn't sound like a nice place to be these days.  You have my sympathies and hopes that the new year will bring you and Patti and everyone else in this predicatment better MTs.

I've been using it a few years now. It's pretty good. You'll get used to it. -nm

I use EXText with my current job and I've used at a couple of other jobs I've had. I've ne

used DocQscribe, but I have used Meditech, Cerner, Vianeta, the Precyse platform (I can't remember the name), Dolbey, and  Lanier platform I think was called Cequence (?).

Out of all the different platforms I have typed on, I have liked EXText the best.  In my opinion, it's very user friendly, easy to learn, and I really like ESP which is the built in abbreviation expander.  Plus it is very easy to create your own normals which I love.  My fingers literally never leave the keyboard because there are macro keys for everything.  You can use your mouse if you prefer or learn the function macros.  I love it.  I think I'm more productive on EXText than with any other platform.

As you can already see, you've come to the wrong board! By using the word professional, you've
excluded about 99% of the population of "whatever" it is that hangs on these boards. Certainly not professional for sure! But you sure are doing a good thing for someone! Its the thought that counts. Sorry you met the dregs right at the start.

I've always verified every line I've typed (I have my ways) -sm
If you're supposed to be paid a certain $/line, that's what you should be getting no matter how they do billing unless of course it's specified in YOUR contract with THEM.

BTW, I've never caught a company cheating me ever.
I've used it. It's the worst piece of crap I've ever seen.
seriously. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy, or their Vianeta program. Awful, just awful.
Wait until you've been there six months and if you've improved
quality and quantity, I'd say go ahead and ask.  Otherwise I'd say annually...  good luck
I've seen the same every place I've done acute care, and
pointing out dangerous or repeated errors (often in normals for goodness sakes!) never got the result I expected. When I would press the issue, supervisors said if the dictators didn't complain, then the mistakes must not matter!

It didn't matter if the MT changed what had been a cardiac med in the beginning of the report to an antifungal by the end - I kid you NOT! One poor girl used facial for fascial and fascial for facial!

I've used a few expanders, and of those I've used, all must be "coded" to get things lik
One thing I do to get around this, is to create a macro and then link the ShortHand command to the macro. It works for me, but I do the same five clients every day and only have about 20 or 30 macros/Shorthand commands that work like this. This may not work well for you if you have lots of formats and hundreds of docs.
I've been doing this doc for many years, so I've learned how to function with him. sm
I can tell what's a stutter, what's another word, what's just an "uh." Years of experience will get you through a lot.
Wouldn't want to do his charts all day, of course, but a few per day aren't bad. I haven't had to send his to review in a long time, but they do take a little longer to shuffle through.
I've worn contacts for 30 years. I've had both
hard and soft.  My vision is much better with the soft ones than they were with the hard ones.   When I first started trying contacts soft ones were still new and they couldn't get me to 20/20, so I went to hard.  Hard were okay until my eyes started changing shape and then I could no longer wear hard ones.  The soft should give you better vision as they conform more to the shape of your eye.
That is a good offer. Pay is not that good at UIMC. Good luck! nm

I've been a bully; I've been bullied.
I used to sell a lot on eBay. There are some people who buy high-priced items and play games with you. I've had to call them repeatedly, report them to different agencies. It's not fun. You put time and money into the business of selling, and there are people out there who live to manipulate the system and cause trouble.

And, I've been bullied by buyers who made unreasonable demands, insist that they pay by check when you clearly state you don't accept them. It's not fun, and is one of the reasons I don't sell anymore. People!

I've also bought from some sellers who I would not deal with again because of their unprofessional attitude.

But, overall, ebay can be a great place to be.
I've become the man I've always wanted to marry.
I live alone, am 46, never married, no kids, just dogs horses and chickens and just got done building a new house out in the boonies away from the rat race. (Used to live in Manhattan) Couldn't be happier. Selfish maybe, but never out of time, never stressed, and I don't take anything out on others. There's something to be said for being alone but not lonely. I'm not looking for a man to "make me complete." They only sap me of my time, energy and money (how little of it there is with MQ). I consider myself lucky getting to choose my time with friends, and not just stuck with a deadbeat partner. Ladies especially: Be strong and allow yourself to be independent. Any old man will not make you stronger!
You know I've done the grilling...I've tried it all...
And I find the best way to cook steak is in a good quality thick-bottom nonstick pan on top of the stove. I found this trick on the internet. I heat the pan on high and when nice and hot, throw on the steak, no butter and no oil. It browns almost immediately, cooks fairly quickly, and seals in the juices - tender, moist and delicious!!!! It doesn't even need seasoning but salt and pepper before cooking. ;)
I've not only typed, them, I've had a few, myself! LOL

Agree with other poster.. good price..good service
I definitely think they are one of the best out there. We also have been talked through issues over the phone and also had a warranty in which they came out and fixed it right at our home. My only complaint..and I am sorry for saying this.. but... when you call their customer service 9 out of 10 times...you get someone who barely speaks English and I just hate that. I think that is true of a lot of customer support centers these days, ironically they are rarely American anymore. I am not prejudice at all. I just find it frustrating to call in for help and the help you get barely understands you and you do not understand them, thus making the experience very frustrating..
Expensive is right -- around $300 per credit hour! But they do have a good rep. Good luck! nm

Good for you. Sounds very interesting and a good chance of pace - sm

but I live in the northeast and not much need for that where I live.  I also live in a small town so that limits my options.  I have spent the last couple of years as a substitute teacher to supplement my MT job and just completed 4-1/2 months as a long term sub which I enjoyed and was a change of pace from MT.  The only problem is as a sub or ed tech you only get paid during the school year so I would have to keep my MT job for summers and school vacations.  With the way things are going in the MT world I hate to rely solely on that.  I don't want to find myself without any job whatsoever.

Thanks for all the responses.

Is the dictation quality good, are the dictators good, are you
a newbie and you still have to look up lots of words ....   The very first day I typed, with absolutely no education way back when, when you didn't have to have a degree/certificate or previous experience, I typed 665 lines.  This was without an expander and I was not a fast typist.   I can do 1000 lines in about 4 hours now on average.
You have a good, realistic attitude about it. Good luck to you. nm
