I bought a desktop and laptop in December. Can I claim on taxes..

and is there a limit to how often you purchase computers for your work? A friend thought you could buy one a year and claim it.  I bought the laptop and desktop in December and already hate the laptop, but I hate to purchase another one if I cannot claim it this year. Oh, also if I charged the computers on my Dell account in December but did not start making payments in January 2006 can I still claim for 2005 taxes. Thanks.

Ugh, we bought a new Dell in December. First off...
the thing sounds like a meat grinder the entire time it is on.  Makes so much noise I think I'm on the tarmac at the airport.  Secondly, we installed a new video card and then somehow disabled it and needed tech support to sort it out.  Yep, got "Jimmie" from Calcutta or Bombay or some other such place (who do they think they're kidding?), who walked us through a process which we thought was going to reset the video card, and he had us RETURN TO FACTORY SETTINGS!   Just as I hit the last button, I realized what he had me doing.  I lost all kinds of documents, taxes, you name it.  I was livid!  Not happy.
A laptop is really no different than a desktop and whatever

you need on your desktop to work, you want on your laptop.   More and more laptops aren't coming with a dial-up modem and I would want that if traveling so that you have another option for connection.   Depending on how/where you travel you may never need it, but I think you always need several options for connecting.   I have used a laptop only for 5 years.   I do use an external keyboard, but it isn't wireless.   I don't know if computers have the ability to have something built-in for a wireless keyboard and/or mouse, but if not you have to have to connect something to your computer and that will just be another piece of equipment to have to keep you with.

There are a lot of companies who advertise "internet based," but that doesn't mean necessarily that you can just download dictation and work off-line.  Many companies want you to type live into their system, so if you are going to be looking for a new position you need to be sure about the details.

Some companies require you to use their equipment, so traveling wouldn't work well with something like that.   If you are able to use your own equipment if you had a laptop already they could load your laptop to start with.

I have an HP laptop and a desktop....sm...

I've had the laptop since January 2007 and the desktop since December 2005. I have been pleased with both.  Tech support is from India but make sure you tell them you use your computer for business purposes and you'll get someone who speaks very good English.  Otherwise, you'll be repeatedly saying, "Scuse me.  Could you repeat that?"

My DH has two HP laptops and has been pleased.  Then again, my DD and her father, my ex-husband, both have Dell laptops and have been pleased.  They don't run theirs as much as I run mine though with several programs running at one time.

Get Windows XP Pro.  Don't go with Vista.  There are still some compatibity issues with MT software.

Laptop vs. desktop - I don't get it
The size of the computer shouldn't matter. It's probably the "wireless" that concerns them (though if a VPN is used and/or you have very good security software it shouldn't matter). Just plug in like you do at home and you should be able to connect.

I use a laptop and desktop...
The company (MQ) provided the desktop, the laptop is mine.  I do not think they provide laptops.
I have a desktop and a laptop...
I got the laptop for Christmas just in case the other computer died and guess what, the other computer died...the motherboard...just I just got a brand new desktop instead of paying to fix the motherboard since they wanted an arm and a leg...so for me having the laptop has been a God send...but it is not something you need to do to work at home...
You need the same specs in a laptop as you have in your desktop.

You needs at least 512 RAM, a good sound card, Ethernet/wireless card, and a dial-up modem if you plan to travel and work, so you have multiple options for obtaining work.   Any computer you buy off the shelf should have everything you would need but maybe the dial-up modem.

If you use a foot pedal you may need to be an adapter to convert your pedal to USB, if you are using serial/game port with desktop.

How to connect laptop to desktop sm
My desktop will not connect to the internet, no internet explorer working yet my laptop connects so if I can connect to my desktop somehow could I start up the internet that way and download internet explorer to my desktop so I will not get an error message? Confusing, I know, but I did a disk compression and I think that's how it got messed up. A system restore will now be allowed on any old dates tried. It's very frustrating.
using desktop computer mobile as a laptop

Anyone have an idea about using a desktop computer as a laptop?  I am wanting to take a roadtrip and I had a laptop that has a cracked monitor screen that I used a Belkin wireless internet PCI card in the side of it with WiFi internet connection.  Is there a way to use my physical harddrive and establish the same wireless internet connection with WiFi?  I do not have the same port that the laptop has on my harddrive that the Belkin wireless card fit into, but is there another card that plugs into the desktop harddrive that will have the same effect?  Thank you all.

Desktop or Laptop? Gotta buy a new puter...sm

Not sure whether I would like to buy another desktop or a laptop.  My hubby has a laptop and the only way I can transcribe on his is if I use an adaptor to connect my ergonomic keyboard.  I am wondering if the screen from the laptop would cramp my style.  I am leaning more towards another desktop because I can use my hubby's when traveling, but then still question what brand.  Anyone willing to give some suggestions as far as brand, specs, capabilities.  I would rather hear from fellow MTs versus sales people in the store selling me things I really do not need.  Thanks!!

switching peripherals from desktop to laptop

if they have previously been used on that machine, does the machine have to be turned off before attaching them?  don't know what i'd do without you guys on this board, be lost in space i guess...

Anybody here work only on a laptop and not use desktop computer at all?
Does it drive you crazy with the small keyboard and small screen? Maybe it's something you get used to and compensate for when working. I'm considering getting a laptop just for work to keep things separate but looking for pros and cons of this. I figured somebody on the board has some advice on this.
Usually one desktop install and one laptop per license. nm
x
Thanks! It sounds like an air card can also work between desktop and laptop
Thanks so much for all this info...It sounds like you can get air cards that plug into USB ports that you can interchange between your desktop computer and your laptop for on-the-go or if there were a power outage. Am pretty low tech but seriously considering this. A lot would depend on the dependability of the signal from my home. If it were steady, I would consider cutting (ha ha) the cable internet which is 48$ plus taxes and just have the broadband (60$ ?) which I could use with my desktop computer or take with me using a laptop and also could use with a laptop in case of power outage. hmmmmmm
I have a desktop Dell and it has been alright so far, but I've never owned a laptop.
What brand are you currently using then?
Made by Dell. I have had no problems with any of my laptop or desktop Dells.
.
I've purchased one laptop and one desktop system used/refurbished, sm
...both from that place I mentioned, and you wouldn't know them from used. I used the laptop happily for many years (still have it, though it's quite out of date now), and the PC is going on it's 2nd year with no problems. You do have to be careful when buying used, but if you're dealing with a reputable site that has a good rep, it's usually not a problem at all and the savings can be tremendous.
This is what I bought for our RV & my laptop
You may have seen this advertised before on TV. I bought it from LTD Commodities but I am sure it is available many other places. It is inexpensive, quite adjustable, you can break it down, and it is very lightweight. I use it at home as a TV tray as well.
just bought used laptop HELP

ok i just bought a used laptop.  when i was at the guy's house, the internet was going.  now, i'm at my house and it won't connect to my wireless network.  it shows it on the screen, but won't connect.  it is so frustrating.  is it the firewall on?  is there something i need to do to get it to work?  I'm going to get a sprint broadband card for it, so not like it really matters, but i just want the internal wireless to work anyways. why isn't it working?

i just bought a laptop for same reasons.
I chose a Toshiba, because of Consumer's ratings, customer reviews, and customer service i've heard about (and sale price!). I didn't realize i'd need a wireless router, but luckily it came in the bundle purchase. If you want to use external devices, check for port types. Mine has 4 USBs but no PS2 that my keyboard requires, so i've ordered an adapter. From what little i know i suggest no less than 1 GB capacity (esp with Vista), and 2 if you can afford it. Enjoy Phoenix!
I bought a laptop with XP recently off of
EBay that was a refurbished one, to be safe I also bought a 2-year warranty just to cover it. Any computer store, Staples, etc. can build you a computer with XP, or check on line with EBay, Google computers with XP, etc. They are still out there, just cannot buy them direct (or hard to find them) through Dell, Gateway, etc.
I bought a new laptop at dell.com yesterday with XP
The deal they were running was that you can buy certai new computers and have them preloaded with XP. You also get the Vista CD so if you ever want to upgrade you alread have it. It cost an extra $150 but worth it to me. Also they do a free upgrade in memory to 2 GB.Check it out. I think the deal is limited time only. My is set to ship on 08/04/08. I am SOOO excited.
Getting my ducks in a row for my big job search. I just bought a Dell laptop for X-mas. SM

It was used when I bought it and I want to make sure that I have everything I need to work from home on it.  The PC I'm on now will be going back to the hospital.  It is a Dell Latitude.  It has a Pentium IV processor, 512 mg of RAM, 40 gig hard drive, wireless internet plus ethernet card, Windows 2000.  Will that laptop suffice for working from home?  I assume it will, but I just want to make sure before I starting applying places.

Thanks!

That's strange I bought the adapter but couldnt get it to work right. Maybe cuz it was a laptop..
I'll have to try it again. I just could not get it to work right. I would get sound but then it would freeze up.
Hey, out of curiosity what kind did you get. I bought a E1505 laptop on there. Great Deal

A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...
I have both a Dell Latitude Laptop and a Dell Dimension desk top PC and bought both...
off of Ebay.  The laptop I paid $300 for had Windows XP and works great.  It wasn't wireless, but they sent me a PCI card with it and it works fine.  The desktop PC has XP on it as well and I paid $250 for it.  Both have Pentium IVs.  Both work great for work.  I have no complaints and I feel like I got a great deal both times out on Ebay.
I don't like Dell. I bought a Dell laptop and it

was a piece of junk, so I'm not the one to ask if you should buy a Dell.   I'd get at least double that processor speed.  My computer is about 10 months old and I have 5 times that, which means that there is probably something faster out now, or soon will be.  It is more than I need for work, but I also use computer to download music/pictures, and a bunch of other stuff.   The Dell I had had 650 mHz and it was slow and that was almost 6 years ago.   You may have to customize anyway to get XP unless you buy one previously owned, which you can also buy from Dell.   It is always a good idea to buy bigger than you need currently just to allow for updates to any software or new software you may add.    You need to also think about tech support.  I know Dell has tech support in India, which can be extremely frustrating.  I don't know that other computer companies don't offshore their tech support, but that would be a question I would ask and find out if there is a locally authorized dealer to handle warranty repairs or if you need to send off the computer.    I would not recommend a Gateway computer and I would not recommend any computer that has a Celeron processor.   They tend to be in all the lower end computers.

December 15?
I always thought it was when the final quarterly payment ws due, January 15, is that wrong?
If you do go in December...

The best days to go are December 18 to December 23rd.  We went to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure on December 21 this year because they gave us discount passes for that week.  There were no crowds at all.  We walked on all the rides.  I think our longest wait was 20 minutes for Spiderman.  The lines were so short that we were able to go on all the rides at both parks, several of them 2 to 3 times each, and we were pretty much done by 3:00.  I asked one of the workers there, and she said that week was the slowest of the year, but that December 24 to Jan 1 is usually very crowded.

If you decide to go, my kids and I actually prefer Universal/Islands of Adventure over the Disney parks.  We like the rides better, and it is a lot cheaper.  I also like the fact that you can bring one of those big sipper cups in those parks, they will let you refill it for $1.25.  They also let you bring food in the park.  I usually bring PB&J sandwiches and our sipper cups, and then we only purchase dinner in the park.

No, December's NOT ideal...

Anyone who's from Florida or has been there knows the rates for EVERYTHING go shooting through the sky come the season, which is the week before Thanksgiving through week after Easter.

Granted, the weather's beautiful in December, but you WILL pay for it if you go to Disney, make no mistake.....

We married in December and get this
my husband is sooooo crazy he wants to visit in the summer. One summer trying to walk about 1/2 block my feet already turning red. It was, oh, about 110 outside. It does not bother him but whew, the sweat is pouring off my brow. Neither of us gamble but I love all that glitter and stuff and he loves the buffets so works out well for us. We got married at Treasure Island, beautiful place. Funny, but we never stayed there again. He said we could have remarry again there - told him he would do anything to get back to the buffets!
I took the test in December

I liked using the CMT Review Guide and the CD that comes with it.  It's very similar to the real test.

Good luck!!!!

I've had 4 jobs since December...sm
Seems like they will tell you one thing and then deliver another. They don't even let you get adjusted before they start sending you the worst of the worst.

It's been very difficult to do this, but I am determined to find a mutually beneficial relationship.

That is why I'm going to venture out on my own. At least, maybe, I can have some sort of control over my own career.

I am learning a lot of different systems, which is fascinating, to say the least. It's been really an enriching experience for me.

I sure hate that testing, though! :)
It's been out of publication since December 2007...

"The Latest Word: The Bimonthly Newsletter for Medical Transcriptionists ceased publication with the December 2007 issue."

Amazing he'll be gone 25 years in December...

seems like it was just yesterday!  So, so senseless.  Hard to believe Sean's 30 already.  Man, this makes me feel my age!!

What's your favorite song he wrote?  Mine's "Imagine."  Absolutely love it...always have, always will

You also can't enjoy the water parks in December. nm
nm
Just don't go in the summer. The guides say that the first week in December is ideal. nm

I bought a wedge at Michael's for about 59 cents. Bought one for my SM
Lanier station so I could see the display and one for my keyboard.
You have your W2 showing very clearly those taxes were paid. MQ is responsible for those taxes
because you were a statutory employee. That is the responsibility of the employer to pay those just as though you were an employee.
To all of you Escriptionist out there...Laptop question. Have any of you found a laptop that you can
thing. I tried one of those adapter that goes from the 9-pin to the USB but when I plugged in the USB my foot pedal did not work right. I know supposedly there is a help section on the escription website that says the adapter may work and how to make them compatible etc but it never worked for me. Has any of you find a solution or a laptop that this foot pedal with work with. I'd like to work while traveling and get a laptop but it never worked on my old one. Ideas??
No wonder they claim they want to (sm)
make us happy!! We are making them REAL happy!!
I did not say not to claim it

I did not advise her not to claim it, she can do what she wants.  A company can expense out without filing a 1099.  I have expensed out without doing 1099's before and have never been questioned by the IRS.  In fact you have to notify the IRS that you will be filing 1099's.  Do all hairdressers report all of their "cash" tips?   I suppose you could do 1000 jobs at $500 each to make your 50K per year and not claim it but I doubt that you could find that many jobs.   All we are talking about here is one job and that is what I based my answer on not the hypothetical "thousands of jobs under $500".  I doubt that the amount she made would change her "owed taxes" except for social security and even then not that much.  Sp again -- she needs to do what she feels is the correct thing to do and if she loses sleep over not reporting a couple of hundred dollars then report it but do not expect a 1099.

Those who claim to have so much compassion....

say so only to make themselves feel superior.  You think you're better because you say what you say.   But how much do you do?  When Bush cut taxes, did you feel  so strongly that it was a mistake that you insisted to continue to send in the former higher Clinton taxes?  Or do you think that only those horrid selfish "rich" people should pay?  Sounds bites and lip service.

claim was denied.
esd said that i was not laid off because of no work so that i could not claim. you have to be laid off because of no work or company shut down (like for inventory, etc.).

no dice. :(
I have my DH claim 0 and single, but we also have
extra $$ taken out of his check.   We have been hit with a penalty of under $60.00 the past 2 years for not having enough taken out for state though.   Hopefully this year we have taken out enough.
New studies claim..sm..
cell phones are perfectly safe to use in non-clinical areas, such as waiting rooms and hallways.  Just Google hospitals "cell phones".  Tons of info.
Sheri, can you at least file a claim
for the automatic $100 of insurance UPS has? I know it won't help immediately, but perhaps you can recover something.
There are scam emails that claim to come from
Gotta be careful.
You claim it in 2009. If you did not receive
it in 2008, it does not matter it was owed, only what you received in the calendar year.
I'm afraid I'd have to see the evidence for that claim. sm
It would really take all the planets being lined up to see that kind of average production among that many people.
