$1.50 an hour sounds good until you calculate FT at

sorry, meant to say how can I calculate over
nm
if they still calculate words like they sm
did years ago, I always learned that 5 characters equals a word, then try that. 140 lines an hour, you want to at least try for 200, 250 or more is obviously better. You have to figure it out. How much do you make per line. If you are making 8 cents per line and typing 140 lines per hour then you are making 11.20 per hour. Is that what you want to make or can you make it easier by working for somebody else and getting paid by the hour? Thats a question you have to answer.
does anyone know how to calculate food
quantities for a party? i need to know how to calculate enough side dishes (like baked beans, hash brown casserole, etc). we will be ordering the main dish but trying to save money by doing the other stuff ourselves.  right now there are about 80 people (about 95% are adults) on the guest list.   thanks for any info!
Depends on how they calculate

Sometimes they use an accrual system which means that even though you invoice in December and get paid in January they will accure that as a charge for 2006 so it could he higher than what you were anticipating.  One of my accounts did that to me but I went by my calculations and never had a problem with the IRS.  Now if they are 2000 less than what you feel you made, it might be because they calculated what you received in January of 2006 as being in 2005.

Hope that helps.

Maybe they did calculate the lines wrong,
but did we get a check or not???? And if we didn't would we have ever known??? No. So take your two cents or $130 or whatever the heck you got and shove it where the sun don't shine. I have thought about everything and I am still at Medquist and I like it. That is great that you quit, obviously you are a normal human being. If you think they are everything that you called them, by all means you are not the hypocrite here, but everybody else is.

My Eagles are losing right now, so my fury is soon going to be unleashed with a vengeance here. So, come on and post everyone. Bring it!!!!!
please help a math-dummy calculate

trying to figure cell phone plans (pay as you go type)....do i divide minutes by dollars, or dollars by minutes to get the cents per minute...

and more so, how does one know which way to divide other things of similar nature (not necessarily dollars vs minutes).

mega thanks .

How do you calculate lph into words per minute?
I know I transcribe an average of 200 lph, but how do you convert that to words per minute?
You can figure approximately a 4:1
transcription to dictation ratio on average.  There are many factors, as you know, typing speed, terminology, number of speakers, quality of dictation, etc.  I read somewhere that 10 minutes of dictation averages approximately 100 lines.  Again, it depends on the above factors.
I'm in the SE and I make approximately $30.00/
hour, sometimes less.  I am an employee and have some benefits, no insurance.  If you are paid on production there are various factors that can increase your income.  If paid hourly the rate is about $14.00, with benefits in my area, but production is a whole other story.
Out of the approximately 100,000 MTs nationwide...
what percent do you think even frequent boards like this one? I've heard estimates of around 10%, which would be approx. 10,000 MTs, so that sounds to be a generous estimate even.

The fact that so few of us are actually online on sites like this, along with the fact that the organization that should have represented us in these regards all along, AAMT/AHDI, has turned out to be beyond worthless, makes any attempts at organization more difficult than herding cats. So many of us are remote and separate, and obviously not well represented by a decent professional organization, making any ''unionizing'' type proposals impossible, IMO, unfortunately.

Calculate your hourly rate for transcribing

and charge them that, i.e., if you normally do 200 lph at 8 cpl, charge them $16.00 an hour.

That's what I would do.

For IC MTs, when you pay your quarterly taxes that you calculate do you also add in the 15% social s

I noticed this too! Costs me approximately
$50.00 more for the usual items such as health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, paper products. Cost of living is going up and our salaries are not.

India's MTs are living very well, according to a friendly gal working for AOL out of Bombay.

I don't know what I am going to do. I got cable t.v. for the winter and feel like I am living extravagantly. There is so much I need. Even keeping my car warrantly valid requires a $500.00 tune up which is hard to budget for.

One thing I do not have is credit card debt.
5-10 hours per week, approximately $78K...sm
send the work out, send the work back, put out fires, bill the clients, pay the IC's, make everybody happy...mind you, I feel I've earned it. Many was the night I was up until 12 typing my brains out and many the time I've gone in and done proposals only to get shot down.  I could make A LOT more if I typed the accounts too - but I'm happy with what I make with the little time I put in. I'd rather have my freedom than the money right now, I guess. Plus I'm keeping 5 or 6 other people employed.
Approximately how long does it take to transcribe
Trying to figure something out but I don't know how long 60 minutes of dictation would take on average.  Any info appreciated.  TIA
I can do approximately 1200-1300 per day...
When I am in the "zone" I can get 1400-1500.
It costs approximately $275 a month. I do have family to cook for, but
that has not been a problem at all. After the first 3 days, I have been fully satisfied on the program, and I am one who has NEVER been able to diet for more than a day or 2. I cook whatever they want which is mostly what I can eat too for my lean and green; beef/chicken/pork/fish and veggies, but I skip the potatoes, bread, and all starchy foods.

To afford the program, I cut way back on buying junk food and soda. Everyone is eating much healthier around here and neither my family nor me feel in the least deprived.

All I can really tell you is it is working for me like nothing has in the past and it's been worth every penny.
approximately how many minutes dict. equals 1000 lines?sm
When I worked in-house, I pure typed all day (8 hrs) 1/2hr lunch..2 10-min breaks and we were applauded for 70-100 minutes (we weren't paid by line but by hour). We didn't have Expanders and such..no normals..just typed. I don't know how many lines I produced, but 100 minutes dictation was a lot of work. Now it seems everybody looks at 1000 lpd as low normal.
Depends on the pay and account. My lowest average is $15.52 an hour (roughly 182.6 lines an hour) w
;'
1850 lines per 8 hour shift. 15.00 hour - no real requirement
x
if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.
I start an hour or 2 early and then take an hour or 2 for dinner -nm
x
At 200 lines a day for 6 cents, you are making $1.20 a day or 0.15 hour for an 8 hour day!!!--cm
Did you mean 2,000? Even then you would only be making $1.50 if you work 8 hours a day.
$32/hour? You said $36/hour on an earlier post. Either way would be great. n/m
xx

$.06 gross line / .70 = approximately $.0857 cents per 65 character line.

A gross line is anything on a line versus 65 gross characters per net line the other way.  You make more money working for the gross line than for the 65 gross character line, as long as the line rate's OK.

10 reports/hour or 25 markers/hour
NM
approximately a liter to liter and a half of stool

How would you transcribe this?

I appreciate your responses. I had an option of line vs hour ($14/hour) but if line pays more...nm
nm
65 to 75 an hour comes to $15 an hour if u are fast
nm
from 4:45 to 6:30 a.m. (1 hour 45 min)

I did 556 lines. That's par for the course for me when I use the keyboard rather than VR - 250 to 275 lines per hour. But I'm no macro or expander expert so I type out about 50-75% of the work.

Don't take anything that is not by the hour.

There is no decent line rate for QA.  Hourly only.  If you take the line pay, you will force QA pay down.

really $25/hour
are u really making $25/hour doing transcribing and if you are what office? why are you stating an hourly rate instead of a line rate?
$50 an hour down to $8...whatever

more than $10 hour possible

As independent, I charge 12 to 17 per gross line (average 15/line)-  type 10-12 pages per hour -- 300 plus lines ($30 to $50 per hour).  Have phone-in dictation system.  Deliver hard copies.  Multiple accounts with up to 15 physicians, plus overflow work.  Major account has 40+ reports a day.  Always have work!  Been doing this at home since 1990.  Will not do difficult dictators (or charge more and let them know why).  Also charge for copies/stat reports/faxes and delivery.  Provide quality work.  So, the work and the money are out there!

About $23 an hour. nm

I wish they would pay by the hour because with sm
some MTs (new/old) their work is horrific because they try to get their line count and don't care. These companies will learn when they loose accounts or get sued.
12-15 an hour ?
No way! I made more than that 10 years ago! God I hope you're wrong!
$24 an hour?
Oh please tell me where ... thanks ! Joanne
That's $7.50/hour!

under an hour???
OMG you are kidding me, right?  You must be talking about newbies, just out of school.  PLEASE tell me you're talking about newbies just out of school!
$20 an hour...
You make more than $20 an hour at a HOSPITAL? I would never leave the hospital then. I quit my job at "big national" to work for a hospital and made...drum roll...$10 an hour! I lasted 4 months because I felt demoralized. If I could earn $20, I would happy work my butt off for 8 hours a day - no problem! Consider yourself lucky.
per hour pay
I would prefer to be paid by the hour.  In that way I could concentrate more on quality instead of the almighty quantity, meeting quotas and turnaround times.  Doubt we'll see that ever happen though.
what should I do? $16.50 an hour ...

Hi Guys!  I'm an MT with 13+ years of medical records transcription experience.  My job got outsourced and the hospital currently dumped me in a unit clerk position for $15.35 an hour on weekends, and $16.15 for the 3-11 shift.  The work really SUCKS and I miss MT so badly I've taken on some at-home work.

I found a local hospital that wants to give me a job for $16.50 an hour and they won't BUDGE on the money - even though as an MT I was earning $21 an hour.  THis job is 1/2 pathology MT and half lab secretary work.  They won't even go to $17 an hour - $16.50.  They're checking my references - but I'm soooo unhappy with the money.  The pluses are:  the hospital is 5 miles from my home, the hours are Mon-Fri 9 to 5, 2 additional holidays than my current hospital, free parking, free medical (non-union) job with $5 copays and $0 Rx copay.

Yes, those are all significant benefits, but aren't the ripping me off with the money?  And the fact they won't budge at all makes me feel they don't really care about hiring me, or not.  The job has been open for 5 months - can't find an MT to do the secy work, and can't find a secy who CAN HANDLE the MT !  HEre I come, well-experienced in both - and the interview went fantastic!.

So what should I do ?   What do you guys think?

Thanks!  JoJo

350 lph would be $28 an hour.
If you are relatively new in the field and need the experience, than it is a good deal. But if you are relatively new in the field you probably will not type 350 per hour. I do not think it is worth it.
$22/hour for LPN as I know it...NM

In CA it is anywhere between $17 to $24 an hour

That's only about an hour from us.
.
40/hour
Those 40/hour job ads really make me laugh, I have been doing this 30 years, work on only one account, have had the account for about 7 years and get paid by the gross line and make about 30-35, am still waiting for the 40!!
$9 per hour?!?
Hun, you got your goals set WAY too low!
