It is absolutely TRUE! Comcast and vonage not sure about, but AT&T small business says NOT ALLOWED!

Posted By: Linda on 2006-08-21
In Reply to: Not true. You CAN legally use ULD for transcription. There are several sm - MT2

Vonage nor Comcast work with all equipment (static, echoing, etc.) and I would be interested in learning more about what "the fine print" says for these two companies.  So, you must be misinformed because I have a sister who works at AT&T and no matter what package you buy, MT IS NOT ALLOWED.....and that is a FACT!

Vonage or Comcast
I have had Vonage for about two months now and I have had no problems at all. My friend has it too. I wasn't charged for the modem, and I have two lines with them. They did charge a setup or installation fee of about 42.00, but they give you the first month for free..so I didn't think that was too bad. Most companies do charge some kind of installation fee no matter where you go. I don't use a C-phone or anything though, so I can't say whether there are problems with that or not. If you have Comcast in your area, they now have digital phone with unlimited long distance. Every Comcast phone customer will have it before long, because they are doing away with their regular phone service and switching completely to digital. Which I'm not too happy about, because if your internet connection goes down, then you're stuck with no phone. No more land lines with them. If you have internet and cable through them as well, you can bundle the three and pay 99.00 a month for all 3 services for a year. :O))
My brother-in-law uses Vonage with Comcast.net...sm
and sometimes when he calls us the calls are crystal clear and other times it sounds like he's talking in a cave. He experiences the same on his end. He did tell us that once he called their tech-support division and had a horrific time trying to understand the person on the other end because their accent was so heavy and they seemed to have problems understanding his questions.
Does Vonage have TRUE ULD? (SM)
If you get their business plan do they have true unlimited long distance - and allow it to be used the way MT use it - Call 1 line and stay on it all day - hours each day? Can someone who has it please reply? thank you.
As an IC, you are your own small business. As a

contractor you have NOT been in their emloyment.  You have worked as contract labor for them, whether it be 1 month, 1 year or 5 years.  They owe you absolutely nothing at any point in time of the contract.  However, should you contact their clients (as you mentioned below), there can be legal repercussions for you so I would seriously think twice about this before going forward.

As an IC, it seems you would know that you should not put all of your eggs in one basket. I would bet that most of us that are IC's work for at least 2 companies.  For the ones that don't, they probably work for 1 company and have their own accounts, OR better yet have all their own accounts.

TAT is of the utmost importance.  It only takes twice with me and I won't send anymore work to that particular IC anymore, which is my option.  I might give them a second chance IF their work was top notch.

Small Business
According to what I read on the internet regarding corps, yes you can and you can be the only employee under I believe the S-corporation.  There are C-corps, S-corps, partnerships, proprietorships and LLCs.  That is the way I read the info.  Reading all info gives me a headache, members, stocks, annual meetings, and so on.   Yuck!  Really do not know if it is worth it.  If you go to MTT Jobs, I have noticed that many, many companies are now requesting employee status.  At first I thought it was so they could have control over you, now second guessing. They may not have a choice in the matter.
Just became IC myself. Do I need a small business license?

Small Local MT Business
Hi Rachel,

What part of California are you in, and are you looking for any partners?

If so, please e-mail me.
I use Turbo Tax Small Business - sm

It will walk you through everything and prepare a schedule C for you as well.  I would recommend this if you are going to prepare your own taxes.

Absolutely Not! All business is best! nm

Independent Contractor vs. Small Business?

I am negotiating a contract with a clinic to be one of two transcriptionists.  I have typed for this clinic for several years as a sub-contractor, but the current contract holder is not renewing the contract.  The clinic's lawyer is not comfortable with "Independent contractor" as the contract would be for one year and for the usual questionable definition of an IC.

I tried to research this and just became more and more confused.. so I hope I can get a little advice here..  I do not want to be employed by the clinic - I prefer to be self-employed.  Do I make myself a small business and get a license?  I do plan to meet with my accountant to ask some questions, but I was hoping to get a little info here so that I would not sound completely stupid!  (Doesn't seem as bad to sound stupid here rather than in person!)  I am used to getting a 1099 and paying self-employment tax.

Are you an Independent contractor or a small business?  I do not plan to have any employees..I just want to type for this clinic and get paid! THanks!

Any small MT business owners in CA out there? I need advice!!

I'm looking start up my own small bus., just a couple accounts, but I need to know if there are any HIPAA contracts or anything else that I should be providing for the doctor and myself to sign.  Any advice would be truly appreciated!!

Thnx, Rachel

Want to start my own small business, need advice..sm
Hi all.  I am looking to get started doing some transcribing on the side for myself, and perhaps turn it into a small business.  Right now, I only have the capabilities of doing tapes and using Word as my software to transcribe in.  I feel like I should look into digital and see how much the equipment would run, and how easy it would be to use.  Does anyone have any recommendations on something that is relatively inexpensive for a beginner? Should I stick to my guns and start out with tapes first?  Any advice would certainly be appreciated.  I have been doing this for 16+ years and I feel like I shouldn't have any problems getting some local work drummed up.  I am getting ready to type up some letters to send out and I guess I will go from there.  Thanks in advance!!!!
I need some advice on starting my own small side business. sm

First of all, I have worked for several nationals in the past few years, and equipment has always been provided.  I currently have a f/t position with a national that I use my own personal computer for, they just put their software on it.  I had what I needed already, as far as foot pedal, Expander program, etc.

I have just been sort of rolling ideas around in my head about possibly starting up something small perhaps on a p.r.n. basis just to bring in a little extra income.  As I am still just mulling this around in my mind, my questions are:  How do I go about getting started? Do I try to purchase equipment first, or start out using tapes? I am worried about spending the money and not having any takers, so I am thinking, I should send out some sort of letters first; but, without having the equipment already, how do I tell them I plan on doing their transcription.  Maybe mention tapes first, and tell them I have plans to go digital after I get up and running? These are all just things I wonder about.  If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to email me with any advice.

I have been an MT for 16+ years, but as I said, I have always had all of the stuff provided for me and just don't know how to start.

Thanks in Advance!

Even with a salary you're kind of a small business owner!
Even if you're paid a salary you are your own agent, so to speak. Why not hire a part-time helper and pay them a subcontractor rate. That's what a service owner does. You are no hero for not getting some help. MTs who have their own accounts have responsibility for 7 days a week coverage, but not all of us type 7 days a week. Put an ad in the job seekers board and pay someone to take up the overflow. You will burn out and not be able to work at all eventually. Good luck to you.
absolutely true and then some

IC = 100% of the social security tax, which is around 15.3% of the gross earnngs. On $35K that's over $5000.

This is absolutely true...sm
I signed up for Quixtar several years ago and it is simply a remake of the old Amway.  The poster above is right.  The only way you will make any money is to get people to sign up under you and get them to continue the process.  You are also required to spend an inordinate amount of money for tapes and books and seminars which are nothing more than sales pitches.  I lost a great deal of money in Quixtar and would advise you to look elsewhere for a work-at-home opportunity.
absolutely true, provided

You're responsible with your money. But if you're one to spend carelessly, you're going to wish you had a credit card if you need some major car repairs or something of that nature.

So I suppose the real "need" is simply having available cash when you need it (not want it).

Sorry, it is absolutely true. I hang out a lot on the
I've had an RNY and also hang out a lot on bariatric forums. The Lap Band is a great surgery but no one will ever dispute that the weight comes off much quicker with the RNY than the Band, and the percentage of weight loss is almost always greater with the bypass. The Band is, however, a much safer surgery, though it requires a lot more maintenance than the RNY with saline fills. Most people do not HAVE to have skin removed, though many choose to do it. The excess skin is unsightly and in many cases causes some skin infections that need to be tended to, but the PS is for the most part elective.

But you are absolutely right about getting your head straight on both surgeries; thanks for pointing that out. My surgery (the RNY) did a fabulous job of taking off most of my overweight and correcting a couple of serious health issues, but the honeymoon is over after 2-1/2 years, and it's up to me to keep it off, and I struggle with that every day (so far so good!).
It is true...and the sales reps will tell you anything to obtain your business, but then they...sm
get you once you start using the ULD.  I know, I have been told the same thing that you say you have been told but then I received the dreaded "cut off" notice.  I wish you the best, but it is just a matter of time until they get to your area.  It's not allowed!
I get it. But in return for supporting the small business the poor folk get nothing in return.
I understand why you don't shop at Walmart. You support those who support you but it doesn't work that way for me. I can go to an independent shop and by a dishwasher, pay lots more for it and get nothing in return to supplement my support of their small business. Same for all the poor folk who are shopping in Walmart trying to stretch a paycheck. I am glad Walmart exists for those folks.
small mentality usually means small pocketbook
Still make more than you and I but that is deserved. They've put the effort forward and educated themselves.

Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices

I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j
Business is business. Internet forums are

Comcast
Just wanted to let everyone know that I just ordered Comcast digital phone service. There are no restrictions. Unlimited is unlimited.
comcast

I've had their phone svc for many months now. the only problem is that when the cable goes out, so does your broadband, phone, everything, so make sure you have a cell phone so you can call in your outage.  I'm in Indiana and dialed in to NY and there was never a question about how much I was on it.

Comcast
This is unlimited throughout the country. I could have added international, which there will be a charge for later, but I don't need it. I told them what I do for a living, that I am not speaking to a person but dialing into a dictation system. She had me hold while she checked and came back on telling me "unlimited is unlimited." I could have kissed her!
Comcast
Hmmm...I was told something different.
Comcast
If you have their cable and internet, you get the phone rate for $39.95.
Comcast
I just talked to Comcast out here in Oregon and they told me that if I was in anyway using my phone for any "calls  that generated an income" that I would be considered a "business" and there would be a business charge for the "unlimited long distance".  So I think in time they will catch up with any of us and it will be the same as ATT, etc.  If it generates an income, it is a business.   It is like my Comcast internet, they wanted to charge me the "business rate" since I used it for business which was almost double of the "residental rate".  So I think right now each area does not know what the other area is doing/saying but once they get up and running if they can ding you extra charges they will.  So enjoy it while you can.   Patti  -- yes I talked to as high up manager as I could.
Anyone with Comcast and have you
in any way been told you were using the internet too much? One of the consumer advocates here in town yesterday probably about the most upset I have ever heard. Comcast is telling some consumers their internet service is going to be disrupted for using "too much" although when asked how much is too much, saying that is their secret?
comcast
I have comcast as well and never heard such a thing. I am basically on almost 24/7 so this is excessive and never, never heard such a crazy thing!
Comcast
The only high-speed we have in this area IS Comcast. For years, they were slow slow slow, constantly going down. I called them at least several times a week. They finally laid a new cable which has taken care of a lot of the problems but they should be a lot faster still. I called constantly and demanded constant credit on my account (which I got) even though they tried to find excuses such as it must be MY computer, MY lines, MY problem. When I called the utilities commissioner for my state, all MY stuff started working again. If they don't listen, call your utilities commissioner and then send e-mail to Comcast letting them know they will be hearing from them. Maybe that will wake them up.
Comcast
Give up and get on DSL. When Comcast bought out Time Warner, NY internet service went from reliable to having to reset and reboot every morning. I have a friend who has to reset and reboot every few hours. She simply loses internet service in the middle of whatever she is doing. To make matters worse, if you need a tech's help with Comcast, be prepared for a wait. I was told it would take at least a week for a tech to come to my home in spite of my explaining I earned by living over the net and could not possibly afford a week without working.

DSL has been awesome - always reliable, great service. Extremely easy set up. Have NEVER had to call a tech about anything. I would highly recommend this internet provider to everyone.
Comcast
Please overlook typos. Hopefully I am better than that.
Comcast..........
I live in Mississippi..... I've had it since moving to this area, about 10 years. From the get go we've had nothing but up and down service and at the worst possible times...when I'm working!! It will go down without explanation...customer service never has an answer, so after several years of constant problems, I finally found a local supervisor (got his number) and he actually fixed the problem. He sad he wasn't getting the information that this area was having all these problems. Haven't had a lot of problems since, even though it does still ramdonly go down..... we NEVER get advanced warning of anything, ever!! We've still had some problems but nothing like before.

I can't say it's fast, even though that's what they claim it's supposed to be. That has been our only option until recently... now there's DSL but still don't know if this will be any better.
I have/had Comcast phone too

I have Comcast home phone service and it is expensive in my area. It was about $60 a month (including all the taxes & fees) but I only had unlimited calling throughout the east coast, mainly the New England area. I downgraded my phone service to the basics and now I use my cell phone for the majority of my calls, it actually turned out to be cheaper for me to use the cell over the landline. I kept the landline hooked up just for a home phone for emergencies & for ppl to call in to us but for me to make calls, they all go thru the cell.

I originally signed up for Comcast back in 2003. I know they are in stiff competition now with Verizon and both companies are offering better, more competitive rates.

Comcast Update
Comcast digital phone installed today. I cannot believe how clear it is! Luv it!
Adelphia/Comcast
I'm confused too. I was told Adelphia would be changing over to Comcast as well.

I've decided to give Verizon a try though. I'll keep Adelphia during my 30-day trial and see how it goes. I hope the change over to Comcast goes smoothly without too many outages.
Can you even get to the Comcast homepage?
I've tried typing it in manually, have used FireFox and Internet Explorer, and nothing is coming up. Maybe I should fire up the Mac and see if I can get in through Safari.
Comcast Internet
Does anyone use Comcast for broadband. I do, but I can't get onto the Comcast.net website, and email is not coming through Outlook today. I was wondering if the problem is on my end or theirs. I can get to other websites (like this one!), but I'm also having problems with time-outs on many, many other sites, not just Comcast. I'm wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem.
Comcast really stinks.........
I used to have their cable internet here in Cresson, PA, but I have switched to Verizon high-speed DSL, and I absolutely love it.  They do have special sign ups, which you can you lock in at that rate, I did!  Sure hope you get rid of Comcast!
Same here, had problems with Comcast
and kept complaining until they finally sent a repair guy that actucally cared. Funny, when he tried to type in differnt web sites just to see how fast everyting was working he had to ask me to do it cause there are hardly any letters on my keys. LOL
Here in Oregon -- Comcast and what we did
I live on a floating home here in Portland and several of us were having that problem with Comcast and it was because the wiring or the cables were old and going bad.  Enough of us complained and I went pretty high up to complain and they finally rewired or re-cabled and now have not had a problem in over 3 years.  You need to keep complaining, call for a repair man to come out, keep your repair sheets with why they came out, and even if it goes back up get the repair guy out to check things out.  The cost of sending them out is quite high for them.  But keep calling and complaining, an squeeky wheel does get oiled.  I was very nice at first, then started calling locally and losing it a little bit I did get results.
Comcast problems

Is anyone else out there having connectivity issues with Comcast?  I was formerly with Insight which was recently bought out by Comcast.  Since that change, the connection is often slow, often resulting in timing-out, which means I have to log back in repeatedly.  This is making work very difficult.  I called Comcast which did no good.  I have reset/reconfigured my router and modem, and done just about everything else I can think of  . . . all to no avail.  I am seriously considering changing to a different internet service provider, but dread going through that process.  If anyone has any tips or ideas, please let me know!

I had trouble with Comcast and lost

3-1/2 days of my 15 day pay period.  Try getting them to fix something the next day even if you had to have them the week before.  You just have to sit and wait for the next available.  To me this is not fair.  They didn't fix it the first time around.

Anyway I lost 3-1/2 days work and I am an IC.  There was no way to prepare for this other than to try to have backup money.  That is one reason I can't get anything saved.  It it things like these that are beyond our control.  Sometimes it happens on the work end and sometimes on your end.  Either way, you lose.

I'm with Comcast and am having trouble, too. I called...
them this morning and spent about 40 minutes trying to do different things and thought it was fixed, but it is not. If I put in an address manually it sometimes comes up, but not always. Good luck.
Has anyone had experience with Comcast e-mail
nm
I have Comcast e-mail; don't know about Incredimail. nm
nm

I use Incredimail with my Comcast account...
and so far like it! I use it with my Yahoo email account. Do you have it or are getting it?
I have Incredimail AND Comcast E-mail
and I LOVE it! For some reason I couldn't view my e-mail through Incredimail and had to go directly through Comcast's site and I hated it! I'm so glad that my Incredimail is working again...it's so much more efficient (and fun)! Let me know if you have any questions about the setup.
