Once you give notice and quit working, how many days/weeks/months

Posted By: sm on 2006-04-09

are you covered by your medical/dental insurance?  My employee handbook does not mention this.  Is there a "standard" period of time that you remain covered?  TIA for your reply.

No reasons. Give 2 weeks notice.
They will probably let you go immediately anyway.

Never give anyone more information than is absolutely required in any situation. You owe them no explanation, either legally or morally.
I would give minimum of 2 weeks' notice
and would not want to burn any bridges so would let them know I would be willing to work a little after that if they got in a pinch but would not take the usual amount and only in an emergency type situation.  Have been in this biz long enough not to burn any bridges and keep all contacts if possible - you NEVER EVER know when you might need work again. Good luck!
I think you should behave professionally and give 2 weeks notice. sm
I just think it is tacky to not give notice even though you feel they have been worse than tacky to you. Professional behavior makes you look good and feel good. Feel free to flame me to a crisp!
You can give 2 weeks notice, but be ready to leave right then if they suggest it.
Good luck to you!
nah, I'd give two to three weeks, if they found someone before 30 days, they'd let her go pron
nm
I quit two months ago. I tried to quit for over a year, but I just had to be ready.
I tried the patch, NRT gum, Zyban, everything. One morning, I woke up and just quit cold turkey. There are some good online support groups out there that can help you when you're ready.
No one ever gave me 2 weeks notice when I was let go
so why do we owe anyone this courtesy?
I've always given 2 weeks notice
and worked until that 2 weeks was completed. Never was dumped. I don't like to burn bridges just in case I might need them again one day!
Always OFFER 2 weeks notice if at all possible
I recently gave my 2 weeks' notice at the national I'd been with for a couple of years. In my letter I simply stated that because of recently being moved to a new account, I could not afford to work due to having to absorb 100% of the learning curve expense, as my paycheck was cut by almost 50% due to learning a new account/new specialty. I expected them to give me the option of leaving immediately, so I had another job lined up. However, they called and asked what they could do to make me change my mind. I thought about and called back the next day and let them know what I'd would work for me, and I'm happy to say that I'm still there and very happy. I had a new job lined up and had even started before I gave my notice, though, as I always like to get my ducks all in a row before I start shooting. : )

Good luck with your decision. I know how hard it can be.
Does the first company require 2 weeks notice?

If yes and they opted to waive it in your case, they should pay you for the two weeks.  You were only following their rules.   Good luck.

quit without notice.
OK...With everything she has gone through, she still decides to play nice and she gives her notice. SHe works to fulfill that obligation and BAM....the company decides not to pay her. Now the company has gotten free work out of her and she has no money to show for playing nice. Small claims court or lawyer in my book. Having said that, I would talk to your state or their state employment people and find out what your options are. If they have been doing this to you for a year, then I see no reason to play nice by giving notice. JMO
Notice to quit.
To my knowledge, giving 2 weeks notice of quitting is not written in stone, nor is it a law that I know of. It is merely a curtesy. A company that wants to get rid of you is not going to give YOU 2 weeks notice. Most positions almost anywhere you work are an "at will" relationship and as such, they can terminate you any time they want. I think the state labor boards are the way to go. Or even call or stop by the local UE office and talk to one of the workers there. If you do decide to quit, you may want to or have to get legal help to get your last check as this company doesn't sound like they value the employees there and shorting you and giving you the run around on the check siutation.
If this was posted at the beginning of th year, it has taken 3 weeks for anyone to notice. nm

I gave two weeks notice... but stopped doing their work FIRST
Since they refused to give me a raise after 7 years of loyal service to 3 doctors full-time, i gave me 2 weeks but didn't do their work in my 24-hour TAT window because I was SO p*ssed. I got it done "on my time" at that point. I have a hot head i can't help it... plus it was a huge slap in the face when not only they weren't giving me a raise, they expected my paychecks to decrease because they were mad they were paying for templates! we seriously were like a little family... that was three months ago and im STILL hurt about it...
If you quit without notice they may hold your last pay - sm
so you may want to rethink that or look at your contract if you have one and see what it says about quiting, etc.
Amphion-Giving notice to quit
I love this company but just cannot make my line count within the time period I signed on for and the amount of time I am willing to work during the daytime.  (Already have a night job and am not going to leave).  Is two weeks' notice necessary for anyone out there who has left recently?  I feel like I am wasting my time at this point and don't want to waste any more beautiful days sitting at my desk and playing with my kids...  Feeling kind of like a failure for wanting to quit.
I quit relistening to everything after about 2 weeks...
Now I just edit as I type.  I've gone back occasionally and relistened just as a 'quality check' on myself and it is always correct.  Also my QA is fine so I don't relisten to everything anymore.  You'll get close to twice as much done if you don't relisten!  Give it a try for a day or two and see how it goes.  I know it made me nervous at first to send on a report without relistening, now I don't think twice about it.  Good luck!
do you mean bimonthly=every 2 months, or biweekly= every 2 weeks=twice a month?
What are they asking, that you bill once a month, with a due date?  that seems completely reasonable to me.  If you are billing once every two weeks, then I think most offices pay once monthly.  Most bills are presented due within 30 days.
Withholding half your check if you quit without notice...
Can someone point me in the right direction where I can verify that this is legal? I'm an independent contractor for a national company. I'm planning to give my notice soon but this part of the contract came up and my husband thinks it's illegal. Does anyone know for sure?
I quit within 24 hours and again after 8 weeks in my nearly 25 years in the biz (nm)

I gave it 6 months and quit sm
The newer and younger ones in our group liked it and the rest of us hated it. The little red box that bounces along made me "car sick" and I couldn't relax because the doc would say "the patient had a MI" and VR would put "she needs to do her homework" or something else way off but spelled right. A report would come across perfect and then the next, same doctor, same procedure, would be all screwed up. I went from straight 3000 lines per day to 4000 VR and they were going to cut my pay per line in half.
Working 6/hour days, 5 days/week I make
$42,000.00, but the work is there to make more if I want to.  I'm in the southeast.
One of those days/weeks
I have had one of those weeks - but today took the cake.  Seems like I never stopped and have earned nothing lol.  My butt got bigger, my left leg hurts because I use my right foot and my left leg is permanently bent, my Son left for work and I did not even know it, My cat bit me because I forgot to feed him, my signifcant other made coffee and I forgot to drink it until it was so cold and nasty. and then I spilt it all over myself.  My youngest called and asked me to pick him up and I FORGOT.  The gypsy moths are eating my trees, They changed my mailman (what a cutie he used to be) Anybody else have one of those days today (I know we all did, so make it a bit humerous for all of us - God knows we could use the laugh I am sure.)
Do they give you notice
Do you think they would give you notice if they decide to ship your work overseas, or give you notice that they are going to hire more MTs to take your work away from you. NEED I REALLY SAY MORE.
IC. How much notice to give?

There is no contract besides on saying to say for six months.  I have been there for almost 1 1/2 years.  If I wanted to give notice, what is usual for doing so?  Is it 1 week, 2 weeks....

Thanks!

Does it pay to give notice?

Please allow me to vent here.  I was the lead on 2 accounts at one of the nationals that is spoken of highly on this board.  I gave my notice.  I also agreed to train 3 people on both of my accounts before I left.  I got very few lines my last week because I was busy training, answering questions, filling in blanks, etc.  The company thanked me when I left and told me they would reimburse me for the training I provided.  I sent an email to the head of transcription and told her how many hours I spent training.

Well, I just got my last paycheck for my last week of work.  I did not do many lines that last week because I was busy training people.  There was no training time on my final paycheck, and the total net check was $67.

Does it pay to be professional and help the company out as you are leaving - I tihnk not!!  While the door is always open to this company, I will never go back after this slap in the face.  I should have just walked off the job for all the thanks I got.

My contract states 2 weeks for MT and 30 days for QA. nm

You give your notice TODAY ... OR ...
you just pack up the computer TODAY, call your supervisor TODAY and tell her you quit TODAY.

That is how you get out of this "screwy place".

It's not rocket science, ya know!
You should always give at least two week's notice!!
explain to them that this "is not your cup of tea". If you're looking for another job, they may tell you you don't have to work two more weeks. I once gave a four week's notice because I KNEW it would be a huge strain on the small company I worked for. Good luck!!
ICs, how much notice do you give for vacation

If you are an IC for an MTSO, how much notice do you give for personal days, vacation days, etc.? This is not stated in my contract with my MTSO, and I do not think that the owner is extremely particular about these kinds of things, but I do want to be courteous. What is the standard? Thank you.

Hello? With a week notice you can't sock in 3 days of food and water?
x
You're so right - I gave my notice - 5 more days & Im back home!!
I worked at home 9 years - back in an office for a year -cannot WAIT to be back home again. Office politics and BS, silly little rules that make no sense, traffic, hours less in each day because you spend that time commuting, people who care if you have a $200 purse or not...when you work at home you can still have friends, but you get to choose who you spend your time with!
I once quit in two days
My "supervisor" would constantly contradict herself and of course that drove me crazy.  But the main reason I quit was because of the ADT and bookkeeping like you said.  I KNEW I was not going to make any money.  It was taking me longer to fill out the dang ADT than to type the reports.  IMO, although you WILL get faster, that ADT screen won't get any better!
I quit after 3 days...
I just quit after 3 days, you either like it or you don't.  You'll know right away whether it is a good match for you...
I have quit after 2 days sm
You know if it is a going to ever be a good fit or if it will never be.  There is a national that everyone around here loves.  I was not properly trained (the trainer was baking brownies, disciplining her child, cleaning her house, waiting on company and training me).  It was frustrating start to finish and after waiting for over 2 hours for someone else to get back to me and advise me on something, I threw in the towel.  The recruiter wrote me a nasty email about it...why didn't you tell us you didn't feel trained?  Umm 'cuz you would never answer my phone calls or my IMs?  I TRIED.  I didn't look back after doing only 4 reports and having NO support.
There are actually people who don't believe you have to give any kind of notice. sm
But if you want the contract renewed or you want continued employment, common decency is called for.
The minute you give notice, the nationals usually sm
dump you on the spot.  Consider how long you want to keep the job, then tell them then, last minute.
Yeppers, it is polite if they do give you notice...
but it not legally required unless you have it contained in a contract somewhere.
Just give the customary 2 week notice.

Grand jury, 1-2 days a week for 13 months . . .
Yup, 1-2 days ever week for a year, in another city, and they held us over another month.

It was a wonderfully educational experience, though. You'd be amazed at what you can learn from it! Check fraud, postal theft, computer crimes, money laundering, wire fraud, drug smuggling, kidnapping, piracy. Seriously.

You'd be amazed who turns up in the cases, too. It completely changed the way I think about people and businesses.

How? By working 12-hr days 7 days/week?
;LKJ
Ditto....granted I am not working much these days, but am currently trying out a new way of working
when I do work which seems to be helping.  I am timing myself and keeping a log of how long it takes to to type however many minutes.  I am averaging anywhere from 13-18 minutes of dictation an hour now doing this.  Granted the time fluctuates between who I am typing, and if I have to look up names, addresses, etc., just depends on the division I am doing at the time.  But work that used to take me 3 hours to do is now taking me under 2 hours, I am also trying to put in more macros as I go along, which slows me down initially but pays off in the long run of course.  I was working "all the time" before but took forever to get done since I was not applying myself. This new "attitude" has helped me a lot.  My goal, in the Fall, is to do 90 minutes a day consistently at 6 hours, and then maybe get up to 120 minutes a day at 8 hours, still while having at least half of the day free (do 60 minutes at night, and the other 60 by Noon).  Thereby doing 1200-1400 lines a day.  I have never really buckled down and done more than 8000 lines per pay period, so it will be a nice change.  Maybe you can do something like that and have a specific knock off time as was suggested below.
On Survivor, they eat rice or corn for days or weeks. They win a reward and eat pizza, greasy
:+
Took me 6 months to finally put IT in mothballs and give up.
Very long and tedious learning curve.
Got that right! If I'm not happy within 3 days, I quit! Too many easier positions out there. nm

Accepted a job with a new company, gave two weeks notice to my old company..

Old company, let me go before two weeks was up.  New company, said they were having trouble getting me set up and my equipment ready, but they would pay me while I waited.  It's been a month, still no check from new company even though I was told it was "in the mail."  I have no income and am at a loss.

I have a signed offer letter from the new company, contracts, etc.  I applied for unemployment, but old company is saying I quit and technically I am currently employed with the new company!  New company is not returning calls or answering email.

What should I do!?!?!?!

I started sending my resume out today, but the process of getting a new job will take at least two weeks and I need money now to catch up on what I'm behind!

How long do you give a new job before you quit?
Just started a new job two weeks ago and have a gut feeling it is not going to work out. The transcription itself is okay, it's everything else -- time consuming ADT, recordkeeping, etc.

What's the quickest you have ever quit a job or how long do you give a new job before saying Adios?

This job is a second job because I need extra money. So I can quit and still have my primary income.
I have been working w/ Amphion for about 3-1/2 weeks now - SM
I have been very pleased. Different experience as below poster - I didn't have to pay to ship my computer. I don't think the pay is low as compared to what other companies have offered me - I think everyone is paying less now. Anyway, they do have more clinic work but this is what I like as it is more repetetive so my line count is always higher than with hospital stuff (except ER notes, which Amphion also has). Everyone there has been so helpful and they seem like they really care about you and want you to be happy. They are always available if you need them. They do ask you to set a schedule and stick to it or let them know first, which I understand b/c of TAT. They have PTO, which they pay based on your average line rate instead of hourly, which I like. The platform is great (I love Extext). On some accounts there is some stuff you have to look up occasionally but you get used to it and that isn't on all accounts. You can work on the weekends extra if they need help on any of the accounts and so far the last 3 weeks I've been there they have been offering extra work. If you are approved to work extra they give you OT pay, which I didn't get at my last job. (If I wanted to work over I just did and got paid my regular line rate; didn't know OT existed when you were paid by the line). Sorry I can't help you about WahlTek as I've never heard of them. If you have anymore questions, I'd be glad to answer them. I'm glad I made the decision to go to Amphion. Good luck.
how did you give up cigarettes, I am dying to quit.
nm
Give them a week's written notice...I'll be leaving xx/xx, please forward final check to . t
why would you have to say anything else?
Read it again and it said "The best advice I could ever give is NEVER quit your job...

That's not advice, that's rubbing salt in her wound.  Your other piece of advice about getting a loan is basically stating the obvious.  I'm sure the OP realizes she may have to borrow some money.  I think she was probably asking what should she do about the employer treating her unprofessionally.

Basically, you gave lousy advice and your only intent was to kick her when she was down.
