Question about lines - straight typing to....

Hi,

I have a job currently where I basically am straight typing the dictation without an Expander program except for the basics, stuff like patient and high blood pressure.. Not really that much..  I currently type on average 185 lines per hour.  what do you think that equates to typing with an expander.  I know its not an exact science or anything but I am trying to gauge how much I can expect as it will likely influence my decision on the different jobs.  Anyone know how much their productivity increased with a good expander program?

150 wpm straight typing.....sm
In high school 1st quarter typing I was doing 70 wpm, by the end of the 1st year of typing in high school I was at 100 wpm.  At the end of the 2nd year of typing I was averaging 140 wpm.
Are you asking for VR or straight typing?
VR will give you much higher line counts but not at 7-10 cpl.
Straight typing please (nm)

For those who have gone from straight typing to VR...
What sort of training did you get?  What sorts of things did you wish you'd gotten for training?  Thanks :-)
I have straight typing in there as well
so that pay is higher and I have speed on fast forward. If you have the speed, probably can do the 3000 or better a day. I set the goal for myself at 3000 so I would bring home what I wanted every 2 weeks.
Is this straight typing....
What exactly are you typing?
I get 4 cpl for editing and between 8.4-10 for straight typing nm

Pretty much straight typing.
Workers' Comp rehab.
Getting paid only for STRAIGHT TYPING

My company set me up to work from home - - - I am new at this and confused and am need of imput from others in the field. Currently I get pain 8 cents per line.  I have a quota of 7,000+ lines a week - -however the computer I have been set up with does not enable me to add programs (if I wanted to add a word expansion program) and, interestingly, the ability to set up macros in MS Word has been disabled.

With that said - - - For example, I will type a new consult on a patient that ends up being 4 pages in length.  I want to "work smarter and not harder" (who doesn't) so I incorporate word Expanders that I have in MS Word Auto Text as well as an Auto Text "intial office visit" outline which includes the doctor's "normal" exam.  All I have to do are make any necessary changes with each individual patient.  We use a nationally known dictation program/softwear which enables me to go to a "statistics" screen to see the line count for each document I have typed.  I have been finding, however, that on these 4 page consults, I am only being credited for 60 lines or so - - - aren't there 65 lines PER PAGE - - -why is it not 4 times that amount??  Looks like I am only getting paid for STRAIGHT TYPING, not for the total line count of the end product.

She says it's straight typing, expanders only,

Do you make $$ with VR or straight typing?

I am a slow typer so I was wondering if maybe I should be doing VR instead of straight typing.  Any thoughts on this from anyone who is a slow typer?

Thanks

I just don't see how it is possible to produce 3800+ straight typing in a day
I'm not saying you didn't.  I just don't see HOW.  I'm a pretty high producer myself, but I worked with a national once that didn't pay spaces and my line count dropped from 1700 lpd to 1100.  How in the world do you manage 3800+ with no spaces?
Who prefers VR and who refers straight typing? nm

xx

Hi, Trying. You're basically right about the straight typing, I think. SM
But as eScription learns to handle the practitioners' dictation, the product you are presented with is more and more an already-typed document and your job is to edit that. Speedy fingers are still helpful, but production also depends on ability to read quickly, recognize and correct technical errors quickly (potassium 45 to 4.5) and decide on necessary grammar/punctuation changes quickly. I have the dictation speed pumped up as high as I can manage to drop in periods and caps and so on and still keep up with.

It will take a while for the practitioners and computer to get in the groove, though, and for some months the documents will come through in various degrees of mess, some good and some awful that you're just slogging through. During this period you guys are working to train the computer through your corrections feedback. The company I work for dealt with this by paying us full transcription rates for editing during the worst of this. Since editing production is a lot higher than transcription, though, the pay per line drops to reflect this. In our case, to half, but I still make more now because I can edit more than twice what I can type.

For that and for the work itself, I really like editing and would hate to go back to transcribing full time (a small percentage is still transcribing physicians who aren't willing to make the few adjustments needed to accommodate the computer's needs). And you're really fortunate in your hospital's choice because eScription/EditScript (the part you work with) is a wonderful program, easy to learn and work with. Best wishes. And have fun!
my VR pays 4 cpl for editing and 8.4-10 cpl for straight typing.
That includes all the lines on the page, even if I don't have to edit some.
so this doesn't equate to .09 straight typing like...
they promise? i'm trying to see how i can make a living at that pay; it sounds like minimum wage or less (my poor hands :(
RE: I used to work for Freedom Type - VERY nice people - didn't do VR, just straight typing (nm)

Wants high quality finished product at 3 cpl editing and 6-8 cpl straight typing. Also rumored she
doesnt like to pay in a timely manner. I passed..
tips on typing 2000 lines a day??
want to increase my daily line count.  i need motivation.  i am at 1500 but want 2000.  TIA
Where do all you guys work, typing 2000 lines a day?
Looking for stable company.....
Typing. This is NOT typing, it is transcribing. There is a BIG difference. sm
Transcription includes typing, but so much more.
Aaahhhh, now I get it. Gross lines vs. Character lines. I guess I've just been conditioned to
think in terms of character lines.  One of the perils of working as an IC for somebody who defines what a line is versus owning your own company and defining it yourself.  After working for someone else for 15 years, maybe it's time to bust out on my own.
That is a lot of work/lines for 2 people. I do 3000 lines per day sm
if you times that by 30 days that only comes to 90K lines a month, that is working 7 days a week including weekends. I don't think 2 people can handle that.
900 lines is below 1100 lines, where the bonus starts.
x
Gross lines include all lines containing
printable characters, so a full line and a line with one word on it are charged equally. Straight lines are basically the same as gross lines, but with this method of counting the blank lines are counted as well (again, equally). I have only had one company pay this way, and they are a middle man. I would think the charge would be about the same as for gross lines, and that not too many offices will want their lines counted this way (the one I worked on was probably inherited from someone who had counted the lines that way, so just continued).
The norm is 1 minute = 10 lines; 10 min = 100 lines - sm
granted this varies per dictator. More lines if a fast talker, less if a slow talker.
I went from 2400 lines to 1800 lines

a day when I switched from clinic (through an MTSO)  to hospital work. Not only was the clinic work easier with more macros (and less providers to learn, 12 vs 300+), but I was typing in straight Word (as opposed to Softmed/Chart Script).  So you see, it really varies depending upon the type of work as well as the platform used. That said, I am so much happier typing the 1800 lines per day (I make over $15 per hour plus an incentive for any lines in excess of 1200 per day) plus a great health package/benefits, AND approximately 5 weeks of paid time off per year.  In my opinion, hospitals really are the best employers WHEN they appreciate the work we do.

My advice for you is not to judge a job by any one criterion but rather the entire picture. The 'extra's can really add up.

Good luck in your job!

Which is the one where they are sc*&ing us the standard lines or the qualified lines? SM
Mine show up as STD when I pull up my transcription log.  But I see now there is STD/QT....  So which is the one where they are ripping us off, standard or qualified?  Need to know.  I am about to switch companies and I will not do if they are actually taking lines from me.  Thanks guys.
Straight up!!!!! LOL nm
.
Okay, let me get this straight.
So, Meredith, Star and now Eliabeth are all leaving? And you think Joy's going to put up with Rosie??!? Highly unlikely. Wow, I guess that's the end of the View as we know it. What a shame!
You got that right, straight and
pretty wordy reports. Just not showing up for a few seconds but also audio is jerking along, word....wor....d… word…wor…d
I have my facts straight.
Comments by people on message boards don't matter.  It's the BBB complaints and lawsuits that back up my facts.  Of course, people are going to say good things about a product or service in order to sell, sell, sell.  It's called damage control.
Your going straight to hell.

Yep, STRAIGHT TO HELL...
I wouldn't stand near you in a lightning storm for anything. You are amazingly cruel, bordering on evil.

Im sure that they made a mistake but that really is not helping on our self esteem. Maybe we could write our representatives to rectify the problem?
I don't as I know several straight male MTs...sm
just like I know some straight male nurses.
Would a straight line be the

or what is a straight line???

Straight from Escription
I pulled this page from their knowledge base of information:  Hope it helps.
Can you fax straight from computer

Can you fax it straight from your computer so that you don't have to print and then put in fax machine? If not, how long does it take?  My charge would depend on the time it takes you to do this and how many a day you fax over.  Keep track of how many you do per month and see what you feel it is worth.     If it just takes a couple of minutes and is only one or two per week, I would do a minimal charge but if it becomes more often or ends up taking more time, figure at a rate of $30 per hour and divide that into the time it takes to do one fax and charge that per fax.

I have faxed over some things and not charged anything as I can just fax from my computer and all I do is go to print and select fax, the page number, put in the number and send.  So it is not that time comsuming for me.  But if it were a daily thing, I would charge something.

gross/straight
what is the difference between the two when charging a physician.  thank you for your help!

"This whole mess" as you put it started long before Clinton became president. Also, remember he was dealing with a Republican congress, which is where NAFTA originated. Reagan was the culprit - it was during his decade of greed that America put itself up for the highest bid - like a lady of the night.
THAT sure sounds like it was straight out of
"I'm good enough, and I'm smart enough, and doggone it - people LIKE me!"

;)
vr versus straight
I make more money doing straight typing as well. Boy, is this an offer from TTS in NH?
Get your facts straight
I cannot believe how ignorant some of the comments in this section are. Physicians from other countries go to medical school in their own country. When they come to the United States, they must pass a Foreign Medical Graduate examination. In addition, they must complete their residency here in the U.S. They also must pass the test to obtain their medical license in the state in which they wish to practice. You don't just go to a mediocre school in another country and then come here and set up practice.
This hourly is for doing straight QA, but you
have to transcribe if they need you to in an emergency, like usual companies. I don't know how much experience you need, I just took the test and I did so well they offered me the QA. But, I have done MT and QA in the past, and have lots of experience. You may as well take the test and give it a try, why not. Good luck!
Get your story straight...

You said above:  Morally, especially the "f" word, I can't bring myself to even type it out.

Now you claim you were just asking the question because you were curious.  Our point is, if it's part of the medical record you need to type it.  As someone else said, if you are bothered by just typing the F word, does it also bother you to type abortions, etc.? You are in the wrong line of work if typing a word bothers you so much that you "can't bring yourself to type it".

The difference here is it came straight
xx
I do straight transcription.
I was just wondering about the reports I send to QA. They're making great money off me because I rarely have more than 1 blank and most of the time they can't get it either.
