Grammar/Punctuation
I would mark it as a grammar/punctuation error, however they both hold the same weight score-wise, so it really doesn't matter if you call it g/p or spelling. If it were a case of having 2 different point values, I would go with the lesser of the 2 - I always try to give the MTs the break.
Punctuation "is not important"?!!
Consider these sentences:

The patient said her mother is insane.

The patient, said her mother, is insane.

Two commas that completely reverse the meaning of the sentence. We are not merely "word-slammers". We are expected to convey the meaning of the spoken word, and that is the role of punctuation. Punctuation substitutes for the pauses, etc. that are used in spoken speech to convey how the words are to be interpreted.

I'm no fan of the BOS by any means, but I can't agree with the extreme statements you make here, either.

You don't have to be an "English major" to know the fundamentals of proper punctuation, either. You should have learned that in grade school. And if they ever do scrap the BOS, you can be sure no one is going to scrap the basic rules of English grammar that you're expected to know and apply.
Are you from India? Your punctuation and grammar are giving you away. nm

in my opinion, you are losing out dramatically on your line count..sm
if you relisten to dictation. Only as a brand new MT should you need to ever do this while building on your confidence. Even then, it is not necessary. A skilled Transcriptionist actually edits as they type. Quite honestly, I have probably only re-read a few of my reports over a 20 year period. Part of speed and skill is learning to edit as you type. Without this, line production is nowhere near the area of making a decent living at MT. We should never compromise quality for quantity though. This is truly a huge factor, I believe, in what makes some successful in this industry and others not. It is a true skill; some have it and some do not. Proper MT education is the base of it all though. However, I have had MTs working for me over the years who were less educated in the field and had a better skill in the industry than those who had much more education, but just lacked the skill to be a good MT. I believe this to be the reason why there are many happily employed MTs, and others who just cannot quite fit it in despite their good intentions and efforts. Give yourself the confidence to attempt to edit as you type rather than re-listening to dictation. At that point, based on your feedback, you will know whether you have the potential to make it in this field long term.

Hey DP/No Whining...whoever your alter ego is this evening....

.....I guess you really don't have a life...on here all day and now all night...what a

L-O-S-E-R!

Does anyone agree with you? Maybe your alter ego who Amens your posts may.

You are like Clinton backtracking and qualifying and parsing.  So if you don't want to be like Clinton say what you mean and mean what you say.  You are POd that people in joke or otherwise find fault with MQ.  Be brave and proud enough to say so and go on with your life.  Embarrassed by anonymous posters.  That tops everything!

BTW, you don't really need to use that shouting font do you?

Well.... if you signed the contract with that statement in there and did not alter
it or draw a red flag to it before you signed, then you agreed to it and it may be legal.

Here is a clue for future - if there is any part of the contract you do not agree with, you change it and initial where you changed it. If the MTSO or company signs it with those changes, everything is fine. If they do not, then you don't work for them.
no you aren't alone dano. you have your clones and alter egos.
look in the mirror.  you have a friend.
i don't need gold stars like you and dano and your alter egos. i need to be paid.
seems like you would want to be paid so you could continue your goal to be a doctor. bwaaaaahaaaaaaaa. a doctor posting endlessly on podunk MT board. that's rich.
I don't think it can do that, it you are meaning
HE to He, etc.
I know the meaning is not
derogatory, any more than my grandmother was being derogatory when she said "colored people."  Certainly, all the countries you mention (Middle East, etc) can  be considered oriental, since the word just means of the east. ("We Three kings from Orient Are.")  But I have never heard anyone use the term "Oriental" to describe someone from Turkey, or Saudi Arabia, or any Caucasian person in the eastern hemisphere; only to people from the Far East (many Americans tend to muddle people from these countries into a group because of their similar physical characteristics).   At any rate, Asian is  the favored term today.   Oriental things (such as rugs) are a different story.   My cousin (age 54) still uses the word "Oriental" for people from the Far East...  she also gets Arabs and Indians mixed up.       oriental/occidental
Punctuation
I would punctuate:
I told him to clean the area with hydrogen peroxide; and, after that he can apply the Neosporin ointment.
No, it is your punctuation. nm

I said he is the same on the inside, meaning,
he still is the most tender-hearted man I have ever known in my life, the same as 28 years ago when I married him. He knows that I firmly believe that his drinking is wrong and that it is killing him (which I don't want to happen), but, leaving him is not something I want to do (been there, done that). I choose to stay. Not everybody's situation is the same and, Biblically, I have absolutely no reason to leave him nor do I want to leave. I hate to see him killing himself this way and that is something that I pray about daily.
I was not meaning you directly at all
guess I was just trying to get across the point that in other parts of the states southerns are protrayed as such. I am white, my husband is black and my mixed daughter was an English major in college here in the south and an accountant now, She, along with me, shutter when we hear ebonics. Like where you live and where I live outsiders would probably not believe with all the diversity, huh?
IC status meaning

I worked 3 weeks for a company as IC status.  They wanted a schedule so I did one and then the work was not coming through so the third week was told not to do schedule; it did not look like the MD I was going to have would get into a routine.  I did the work at night or early morning.  Was told I had to work my schedule even if I had no work I had to be there in case it came in.  Does IC status not mean TAT and production but flexibility with schedule as long as you get the work done.  Also it went from 60 minutes to 120 and then at the time I finished the 100 minutes 85 more came through and it was like she expected me to do it right then.  I had 24 hours.  Also was called as soon as it uploaded at 4p.m. one day and was asked "ARE YOU TYPING".  It was not my scheduled time and it had only been uploaded about 30 minutes.  What is your take on this.  IC does not mean be harrassed if not an employee with benefits right.  No work for 3 days and then hounded as soon as it came in.  I am not there now because I voiced my opinion.

How would the punctuation be on this sentence?  Did I do it right?

Quick punctuation help! sm
Sorry, but it does not seem you received much help here. The truth is every typist has her own style. It seems that quite a few want to place a comma every time the doc pauses to take a breath or shifts a page. If that is what your own doc prefers, then go for it. Most do not, however.

Grammatically, you may use commas or not in this sentence, but none are necessary. It has been my own experience that doctors would rather have less rather than more in the case of commas. Believe it or not.

Is question about punctuation? (sm)
If so, I'd change it to:

Transcriptionists that do not know punctuation
I just had a dictation in which the doctor specified (correctly) where the quotation marks were in relation to the period at the end of the sentence and stated that he was tired of having to correct reports where it was incorrectly placed. I was aghast! How could anybody transcribe and not know elementary punctuation?
punctuation problems

HI,

I am taking my medical transcription course through Allied Schools. I am having a problem trying to punctuate the dictations properly. I would like to know if anyone can help me with this problem. What I thought was proper punctuation seems to be different with medical transcription. Are we supposed to transcribe the punctuation as the doctor dictates or correct it to what we believe is correct?

Also, I have an assignment that I just transcribed that is impossible for me to punctuate. If anyone can help me, I would truely appreciate it.

punctuation issues

I was very careful about punctuation until I had to research things and found that the MTs at my hospital NEVER use commas. I could barely understand some of the long, strung out sentences. I always researched obscure medical terms to make sure my work was accurate, yet I make $10 less an hour than others there because the pools are set up so some MTs get the profitable work before the rest of us. The point of this is, I don't feel that my excellent work is appreciated, and I don't believe the pool situation is fair, so I just do minimum to get by.  I also work IC to supplement my income,  and my IC work is much better because I feel appreciated.

Docs and punctuation

Regarding the posts down the list about the docs who dictate run-on sentences or add bunches of periods, etc.  I am wondering why they are not instructed to not include punctuation at all.  Our company has us disregard what they say anyway (since it is usually way off), and it seems they are making it extra rough on themselves.

I have one who says comma practically every other word.  It really threw me off at first, but now I hardly even hear it (so used to ignoring it).  But think how much easier it would be for them to not even think about it.  What works the best is when they just use their voice inflection to signal the end of one thought/subject and the beginning of another.  Being someone without a whole lot of medical background, it gets confusing when they don't.

Why is it no one seems to communicate with the dictators about such things?

You are not wrong, Punctuation goes
inside the quotation marks.
Need help with punctuation and caps

I have MS Word 2003. This program has always capitalized the first letter after a colon (:) and for some reason today it stopped. I cannot figure this out for the life of me. I have been in Tools, etc, and see nothing that addresses this problem. If anyone has had this problem and knows how to correct it, please enlighten me. LOL

IC meaning independent contractor?
As far as I know...no...for independent contractor, they do not have to pay any benefits or even take out SS, so I would think it would be MORE not less for IC. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I am not meaning to start a firestorm, but can anybody SM

explain this? I'm not trying to get banned, but every other site on the net survives just fine and there is no such restriction on them.

Maybe I'm dense, but I can't even make up a sensible reason for it.

Exactly what I was meaning in post below, but you say it so articulately. Thanks.

It sounds to me like this MTSO needs to look up the meaning of IC. sm
From your description, you have been more than understanding.  We set our hours and we work them, but are not sitting here every time something is needed.  I have worked 3 IC jobs (simultaneously) in the last 1-1/2 years, and can tell you there are wonderful companies out there that are very considerate.  You don't need this one.
Are y'all meaning Sylcount?
If you need an Expander too, you can get Instant Text, which has counting, invoicing, and reporting built in. :-)
Again, you've missed the meaning.

The interpretation is this: Money will speak louder than just writing a letter. Speak financially. Get it now?

Misspelled words, punctuation
I would love to be an Editor some day, love reading the typos in the newspapers, etc.   However, I nor anyone else is perfect and we all have our days.  On the other hand it depends on what you are accustomed to.  I have typed radiology periodically and on one account told to use punctuation where needed and another account that I worked clinic in-house radiology was told by the radiologists not to use punctuation unless they told us to because it could change the meaning of the sentence.  So, I obliged and no longer use punctuation unless it is dictated to me.   Unless I hear differently I will continue to do as I am told.

They needed a reason to do it. (And to sell their anal little BOS). Get everyone so freaked-out about commas and semicolons that they either quit, or their production falls off and they can be 'justifiably' let go, forcing the 'poor MTSO' to have to look offshore for bodies to fill their sweatshops.
