Whoops and I meant to say that Unicomp look like a great keyboard.

I am glad to see there are companies still making good quality keyboards and making them with a USB connection.  You cannot go wrong with a buckling spring or mechanical click keyboard (if you can tolerate the noise) for quality.  The keys stay snappy and the marking stays on.  You pay a little more but personally I would rather pay 2 or 3 times as much for a great keyboard than to keep buying a new one every year.  As I understand the plastic one that you buy at office depot that are Logitech or Microsoft cost about 5 dollars to manufacture.  No wonder they wear out.

What I meant was where are you about the keyboard brand question below sm
Was trying to figure out which brand of keyboard you have that the space bar can be programmed - the Kinesis Maxim cannot. And also the Maxim does not come completely apart.
Sorry I did not make myself clear, but anyway I am from Louisiana pronounced Lu-see-ann-na!
Unicomp
Unicomp, Inc. of Lexington, KY does not manufacture "clones" of the IBM Model M. They manufacture the IBM Model M. Look on the bottom of your 'real' IBM keyboard. If it says "Made in the USA" on it, it was made at the same factory with the same machinery that Unicomp makes their keyboards with now. The Customizer 101 in Pearl White is the exact same keyboard, and Unicomp's other products utilize the same keyswitch design. Your "clone" might feel different from your old IBM because it is brand new, and the buttons haven't been pushed as many times.
oops, meant to say it really works great for me.
:)
Great keyboard
I just bought a new keyboard on ebay and it's awesome.  It's black and connects with a PS/2 port, which I need for my KVM switch.  The keys are situated just like the Microsoft natural except the spacebar is split and they moved the windows key to behind the alt key, which is great cause I kept hitting the blasted thing which stalls the screen.  The keyboard is called a U-Touch by Inland.  I got it for only $14.99 plus shipping and I plan to get another for backup.  Look it up on ebay!  HTH!
Hmm. I thought Unicomp made keyboards similar to the IBM Model M
That was the old clackity clack buckling spring keyboard.  You get a real IBM keyboard on ebay or clickykeyboards fairly cheap.  The key markings are part of the key itself and never wear out.  They are exceptionally NOISY though and you need a special USB converter to make it work with a USB connection.  The Omni is a mechanical keyswitch which I think is even better than the buckling spring,  just like the poster who posted about it.  Those key markings never wear out either.  Mechanical keyboards have a wonderful touch but they don't make very many any more.  Too expensive to produce and instead we have the $10-20 dollar rubber dome "quiet" keyboards that feel like typing on a wet sponge.   Some people though like that wet sponge feel but I think they are slower keyboards and harder to type on.  Just a preference even though they are noiser.  And for some it does not matter how spongy or squashy the keys are as long as the keyboard is quiet they are happy.  Different strokes I guess.
Try a microsoft elite, cheap on ebay and a great keyboard. nm

Whoops! DH gave DD the car (sorry for the confusion)!
What happened was that I thought a second hand car was fine and she should pay for it like I did in high school but he said, "Are you kidding? You bought your own car in high school in 1975 when it cost a couple hundred bucks. If she bought her own car now she'd need a loan for the friggin' thing. It's just not possible anymore for kids to buy anything like that from a minimum wage job at the Dairy Queen, plus if by some act of God she was able to it would be a piece of junk and unsafe."

I use a MSFT Natural keyboard at home and the laptop keyboard on the road. nm

favorite keyboard over the holidays is called "no keyboard"
nm
If you use a standard keyboard you can buy an old IBM model M keyboard on ebay or clickykeyboards.co

That key printing never wear down because the letters are part of the key itself.  They just don't make them that way anymore because it is too expensive to make.  Some of the mechanical keyboards like Cherry have what they double shot key imprinting and the letters are part of the key itself and don't wear off. That IBM keyboard is very noisy from the type of keyswitch it has so you may not like that.  Logitech and Belkin make some membrane switch keyboards that are supposed to have longer lasting key imprints.  I have a logitech that has the longer lasting key imprints and it is pretty good.  You have to look on the specs to find out if has the longer lasting key printing.

I have experimented so much with keyboards and have done a lot of research.  Way too much info.

I use a laptop with a full-size keyboard (no separate keyboard)
I'm using a lap desk but previously was using a pillow with a book on it under the laptop. No additional keyboard though, I bought one with a full-sized board with regular size keys (an HP) which I LOVE and it took no time at all to get used to it. I also love that when the weather improves, I can take my computer outside and get some fresh air! What a great job... :)
Keyboard and mouse. Is there such a thing as a keyboard that has a mouse on the actual keyboard?

Has anyone used the Smartboard keyboard? Everyone tell what keyboard they have and rate it nm

Kinesis Keyboard and keyboard tray

Okay, any lefties use this keyboard? How long did it take to get used to? I use my left thumb for the space bar and I notice on a diagram of the keys that I would always be hitting the backspace key.

I'm really interested in getting a better keyboard. I destroyed my left hand and wrist the other week when I fell because I'm becoming a real klutz.

I bought the Soft Flex gloves, but they only help a little bit. My production is down because of it and it's driving me crazy. I can only type an hour without stopping and then have to rest the hand for some time.

I did buy a Microsoft 2000 keyboard but have yet to recieve it. Is this a good one?

Do you use a keyboard tray with it or just set it on the desk? Do you think a kayboard tray would be the least expensive item right now that would help with a straight keyboard?

Any info you can provide to help me in making any decision would be greatfully appreciated.

'Scuse me for being old school, but I've only ever used a straight keyboard.

Does anyone know of a keyboard that has the backspace key in the center of the keyboard? NM

Split keyboard mounted on chair arms versus split keyboard on desk

For longtime comfort which is best - split keyboard mounted on chair arms or split keyboard to be used on the desk?

Also, why the preference over split keyboards that come totally apart versus split keyboards that are permanently connected at the top?

I want to revamp my office and there are so many different options.

Gold touch makes a keyboard without number pad. Also the evoluent keyboard has the number pad on th
It is a very small keyboard and has laptop keys which are very quiet and light to the touch.  Almost no noise.
Saw him on CMT show with John Fogarty. Great, great singer with a neat personality and drop dead
gorgeous without seeming to know it.
Great post. I swear by both Advantage and Frontline Plus-- both work great! - sm
I don't know about "natural" approaches for the house. I have always used flea bombs in the past before the miracle of Advantage and Frontline changed my life. Have not had a flea problem at all since I began using those products about 10 years ago, dose all the dogs religiously once a month with the Frontline Plus except in Dec.-Feb. to save a few bucks and because the ground is generally frozen by then and no fleas are scurring about. -- Hope you get flea free soon.
Thanks to all. Got some great feedback and ecouragement. This board is great.
My rant passed, ate a late lunch, now back to the trenches.
GREAT GREAT SHOW! I still think Ellen Pompeo
should have gotten the Emmy/Golden Globe whatever it was for the show. I like Sandra Ho, her character just needs more depth... Next week looks AWESOME!! Maybe there is still a chance for McDreamy!! First season DVD coming out with deleted scenes! Can't wait to get it & watch it!!
It is a GREAT company and great deal! I've had
Vonage about 6 months now and I love it. The only mistake I made was trying to keep my original phone # - I wouldn't recommend that. You have a temp # for a while, and the other provider can fight for the old #, etc. Go to vonage. com. They have new features all the time! There is even a new soft phone that is a phone on your screen. You don't need a real phone when working - just headset. It has 800 #s you can have very inexpensively - great voice mail. You get emails when you have new messages, etc. I only wish I had used them a year ago! Nothing but good things to say, and I complain about everything!
Sounds like he will do great then. Again, best wishes for great success!

That's great Patti. Thanks. Have a great time at the beach.

You should feel great as a transcriptionist if they think your work is that great!!!
It is not your fault they approached you. I think it would be a different storey if you were the one searching for the job to take away from a company. They obviously want to get rid of the company and if you didn't take the job they would probably ask someone else. You should enjoy the better position and not feel guilty!!
Great post -great job of wording your answer! (sm)
Original poster - I completely agree with this answer, especially the part about finding yourself and using all that you have learned intellectually and connecting that to something that you will also enjoy with your heart!! You have so many wonderful options for your future - much more than many of us.
