have you followed her career and her private life? she actually sickens me.
that kiss with her brother and then billy bob!!!!!! ugggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh  gross and nothing beautiful about it.  now she tries to rehab herself with adopting pitiful children who are cared for by a staff of nannies and other caretakers.  those kids are tools for angelina.
This is a good career, but it is not easy. sm
I work about 30 hours a week and make around 1500-1800 a month. It depends on your typing speed and your stamina, and mine are just average. Some make more per hour, some less.

It is hard work. You are constantly being challenged to learn new things, the medical field moves very fast.

There are a lot of changes going on now, with many of the companies sending work to other countries to be done. Some feel there won't be any jobs in a few years, but I don't think this way. Many of us may be editing off-shore work, and that can cut down on the paycheck.

I personally think that there will always be a place for really well-trained individuals. You just have to search harder to find the right job for you. Some of us are used to making $20-30 an hour in the past (I was), and it is discouraging to work for so much less. But I think the new graduates who get jobs are more optimistic.

You might go to the "New MT/Student" section of this forum and post a message, get the opinions of some of the newer MTs.

Those are both good schools, not cheap, but I believe both will help you get a job if you make good grades.

You'll hear both positive and negative on this board, so sift through and judge for yourself. Just remember, this is not a "quick fix," but a long-term commitment that can pay off well, if you check things out and it really is right for you.
Good luck whatever you do.
It's a career --- in INDIA. In the good ol' USofA,

Wishin' ya' good luck in your career!
This is the reason why a lot of new MTs cannot make it because it is not told in school that to make any real money you need quite a bit of experience.  The nice thing is you always have it fall back on.
U.S. Career Institute is not a good school for anything.
They are a total rip off. All they want is money, they don't teach what you need to know, and they don't care if you get a job afterwards or not.
What is a *good* life?
If you are talking material things, forget that - they need to be with you. If you give up your children, they will never forgive you and YOU will never forgive you. This advice would be different it you were pregnant, then I would say, yes, give the baby to someone who can care for it. That is love.

If you are talking any kind of abuse, get them someplace safe. No child should have to live with drug abuse, or any kind of emotional, physical, or sex abuse.

Fad clothes, iPods, cellphones, etc., are not the ingredients of a good life. You know that. Take care and good luck to you.
we went last May, cost us a fortune!

Our expenses were for 2 adults....

We actually did one of those timeshare tours so we could get 3 nights free at our hotel. So we paid for 4 nights = $400, there was supposed to be a shuttle going to/from the parks but that didnt work out so we had to rent a car (dont remember how much that was), Disney tickets for a 4-day park hopper pass was nearly $500, Universal 2-day tickets were about $200, cab from the airport was about $80, food was very expensive - about $100 day.

We flew JetBlue & i thought they were wonderful & reasonably priced. I want to say our flight was a total of about $400-500.

All-in-all, I'd say about $2500 for the whole trip including gift shopping & food.

Good Heavens!! Do you have a life?

Re: Good Morning America - man outsourcing his life

If Good Morning America hasn't been on yet in your area, about 45 minutes into the show Diane interviews a man who is outsourcing his life to India, from ordering groceries to reading bedtime stories to their son...OMG.  Can it get any more pathetic than that?  He says he contacted a few places and one quoted him $400 a month, while another $1000 a month.  He even outsourced a argument with his wife.  The woman in India apologized for him and sent her a card with hugs.  If he were my hubby, I'd find a way to outsource my foot to implant it in his behind.

What next????

CAREER versus JOB--lovin' my CAREER
Career definition:

1. an occupation or profession, esp. one requiring special training, followed as one's lifework:

2. a person's progress or general course of action through life or through a phase of life, as in some profession or undertaking.

3. success in a profession, occupation, etc.

Job definition:

1. A specific task done as part of one's occupation or for an agreed price
2. post of employment; full-time or part-time position: She was seeking a job as an editor.
3. anything a person is expected or obliged to do; duty; responsibility.

Hence, medical transcription requires special training. This is a CAREER.

The report we transcribe is a job with a job number.

I love this CAREER and am proud to be in my 12th year as a medical transcriptionist. I'm not rich, but my consistent $18 to $20 per hour equivalent is pretty darn good in this small town where the cost of living is pretty low.

LOVING MY CAREER!!!! :)
Career? this thing is not a career anymore...sm
this is a sweat shop job right up there with all the illegal sweat shops out there.

Right now, i have no other choice but to do this "job" because with my disabilities, no other place will hire me and I especially cannot work out of the home anymore. Until I can get disability, I guess I will continue to do this job, until we are all phased out by Indian MTs and VR.
Wishing you all a

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned--the dark meat and white
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
the thought of a snack became infatuation.

So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
pickles, and carrots, beans, and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
with a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.

But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees,
Happy eating to all--pass the cranberries, please!

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.

May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.

WISHING YOU ALL A THANKFUL THANKSGIVING

wishing disaster on anyone is
no matter how strongly you feel, you should never, ever wish disaster on anyone. Don't you know that could come back to bite you in the butt...not a nice place to be bitten...except by you hubby maybe!  For real though, that was cruel.  Too many innocents suffer when a disaster like a hurricane or tsunami sweep through, not just the ones you wish it on.  Remember, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!
Wishing I had so many options!!
Boy do I wish I had the option of cable vs DSL vs dialup! The cable line ends 1,000 feet from our home and they will extend the line for a mere $10,000 (yes, you read that correctly). For DSL we are to far from town. I even purchased satellite but there was a 10 second lag from the time that you punched in a letter to the time that it appeared on the screen so it was virtually useless for transcription. MQ had told me that I could not do NW acct with dialup 3 yrs ago so I purchased the satellite $500 later after the lag and and service charges and when I told them that I would have to quit they said "Well you can use dialup too". Go figure. Amherst office boo hiss.
aw man, it's too cold, but I'm wishing!

Wishing it to slow down
I hope it slows down, I don't even have my house decorated yet.  Came back from two days off and had 18 tapes waiting for me.  All are average of 25 minutes or so, some longer.   Hardly any short ones.   I give back 8 and get 6 in return.  Thank goodnes have 3 docs taking off starting the 17th and then can breathe.   Have had several docs say that hospitals are full right now in Portland and hard getting patients in and getting surgeries scheduled so hospitals are full here too.   Guess I will count my blessings.
I was WISHING it would work, lol. Just me and

My friend wants me to sign up...she is making about $2000 a month now but working quite hard at it.  My husband claims it is like a pyramid.  I just don't know. I wondered if any of you have had personal experience with this type venture.  TIA
It's not about a "sense of empowerment". Not wishing to make you look dumb but
it's about expressing your true feelings instead of playing some sort of game when someone says something so incredibly without logic or they don't UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT (as you did) and JUMP TO AN UNFOUNDED CONCLUSION that somehow but telling someone they are not the brightest bulb on the planet and they bore me gives me "sense of empowerment". You been listening to too much psychobabble and did not PAY ATTENTION TO THE CONCEPT OF THE POST.

By the way, I do not feel a "sense of empowerment" after this post to you. I feel that the world is populated by not-so-smart people who don't read well and that is depressing me.

Here I sat feeling so incredibly lonely. Wishing I could meet my soul mate
All the men I have ended up with sound like the guy you are with. Takes all the courage I have to pick up and leave them but staying with them destroys my sense of self esteem, my sense of humor, and dulls my passion for life.

Now, sitting here, quietly, sipping a capuccino, sitting in a robe, having no expectations (unrealistic) of me, not having the guy in my world stifling me or doing something out of this world to send my spiraling into my mind trying to figure out what he is thinking ...orrr the always present poor financial state that I always seemed to end up in when with a guy (my dad was alcoholic - had tendency to be with men who had character traits of addictive personality types)and all I can think of is life is passing me by cause I am not with a man.

There are worst things than being alone. Why do I forget this???

Follow your gut. Your kids will thank you. Children deserve a happy mom and you deserve to live the life you envision.

Was going to suggest that you wait to buy as I have a feeling some homes will end up in foreclosure as the interest rate increases and the monthly payments on ARMs and interest only loans increase, but if you have a small town that may not be the case.

Let us know how things go.

I make sure the job is not my life and that it does not take over my life. sm
I have been at this 25 years, even once had my own accounts and worked 24/7 with cat naps to keep going but no real sleep. I really burned myself out. Now I work a regular 40-hour week, but it is not my life. It is a means of making money so I can go live my life. I work for a company that is not all about production. They want us to take our time and do it right. I am doing that, and it feels so good to be able to work at my craft and be allowed to do a good job while I am at work.

But after I get off, I have my family and I take time to have fun and enjoy life. I think that is the key to not staying burned out. You need down time, time to have fun, exercise, relax, etc.

Exercise is very important, too. It rejuvenates the hormone system so you have more positive hormones flowing through your body and helps get rid of stress.

That's what I do.
New career
I found myself wanting to leave transcribing after many years, but was at a loss as to how to make such a drastic change in my forties. I saw an ad in the paper for a medical malpractice defense firm. They were looking for a transcriber to train as a legal secretary. I made the move and have been much happier. They needed my medical background and I needed a chance. It can happen! Good luck!
mt career
You are not a loser! I had all your same experiences and am being treated like a dog as well. I just pray each day for a new direction in life. I haven't really "given up" but life used to be good; now I feel like I am "begging." I am also being kicked to the curb for being "too old" and that hurts. No one is "old" unless they want to be. There are a lot of smart mouths out there who will make you "feel old" but hang in there. There is a place for us, you shall see. The day "technology" gets someone in deep doo doo, they will realize that outsourcing is a major mistake, perhaps not in our time, but it should not be a cottage industry nor a piecework production industry. We should be treated just as professionally as those behind the real mahogany furniture. They'll learn and the sooner the better for all of us! Hang in there, you're not alone. This is not something just anyone off the street can do. The lawsuits will start pouring in and it will be their own fault for being so "cheap" with good people who deserve to be treated professionally.
If it keeps your career going, do it.
I think Bo Jackson did the same thing to keep playing baseball and who knows how many others have had hip replacements.

Besides, Prince would have looked a little odd pulling up to the mic in a scooter. Would have been awkward dancing in one too.:)
we need a new career
i think we should realize by now, our jobs are being phased out. face it, technology is getting the best of us. right now, there are no transcription jobs in medical offices in this part of massachusetts. they are gone. we need to move forward, not look back and do something we always wanted to do. how bout dipping chocolates or body parts, lol. take up cake decorating; extreme cakes like on the food channel. this is a lighthearted look at things to come. please don't be negative. what did u want to be when you grew up? i think i wanted to be an astronomer...yah right. i flunked science.
This IS my new career!
Years ago I graduated from a major univerity and went into business, ending up in mangement positions at a high tech company, a hospital, and several other medical companies. I had a private office overlooking the water,a good salary and benefits, staff do do my "crap work", and a whole lot of headaches. Now I'm a medical transcriptionist. I love what I'm doing. I'm making less money, but not doing too shabby. Plus, no expenses for commuting, a work wardrobe, lunches out - it's amazing how those things add up. Compared to what I used to do, this job is a breeze - it's so relaxing sitting at a keyboard and not having to deal with all the crap that goes on in companies. Wouldn't go back for the world. Whether this is a good field is all about what you're looking for. For those who are disillusioned, I'd advise finding another field or position that fits you better.
I also thank God for my career!
After 10 years of doing this, I love getting up in the morning and starting my day. I love my doctors and PAs. I hated working in an office and driving, as well. I love the quietness of my setting and finishing up at a decent time. My company appreciates me and takes care of me. I wish I found this company years ago. My money combined with my husband's is very good. I pray I will retire with this place. Please find a company and work type you love to transcribe! It's truly the way to go to be happy. I get a rush with every new word I have to look up and find it a challenge. I jump for joy when I find that word and learn something new. I guess that's what our job is all about!
So what new career did you go into?
x
I have a career
I don't understand why an MT can't consider her job her career?  I make 40,000 a year.  I work in my home.  I can take a day off whenever I want.  I am left alone.  My husband was a carpenter for 25 years.  Now that the housing market has fell out from under us, he has no job.  He is trying to find a job and looking at making 8.00 to 10.00 an hour, if he is LUCKY, after making 30.00 an hour for years.  We are lucky to have a job.  There are a lot of people out there who consider 30,000 to 40,000 a year as good money.  I think we have been shut in our  houses for too long and don't realize what we have.  All I see on this board is complaining and crying about how horrible it is.  At least you have a job.
This has been a great career -- SM
I graduate this December with my Bachelor's in Science; major in biology/premed studies with a double minor in chemistry and history. I have a seat in the freshman class of 2006 at UAMSC to obtain my M.D.

This has been a great career for me all these years.

The posters who make such statements that those with higher educations still deciding to do MT work are pitiful -- that's their pitiful attitude. Don't listen to it.
Yes, same one...very happy with this career ..just going on to
do more with my life. :)

Now your attitude is REALLY showing! LOL

Career Step
Hi - have any of you received your training from Career Step?  If so, would you recommend the program?  Thanks for you feedback.
Well I'm starting my career YEA
So I put my two weeks notice in at my mortgage job and I'm about to embark on my MT career, I have been doing this part time for a year and asked my employer for more accounts and they were kind enough to give me more work !!!!!! So I'm not anticipating making much at first but gas prices will be $5.00 a gallon anyway soon and it will not pay to drive anywhere.  So if anyone wants to give this sort of newbie any good advice it will appreciated... I'm so excited !!!!
Hello I'm about to embarke on my career
I have worked for the mortgage industry and I cannot deal with the rude loan officers anymore.  So I have been doing this part time for 6 months and I just received a new account and I'm embarking on my MT career.  Any advice, I'm leaving a 30000.00 a year job for this full time and I know I will not make much as I can only get 130 lines an hour right now....but I'm excited
career step

I am considering going to Career Step.  I have been working as an MT for a few months now, but I do not feel that the course I took prepared me for the "real" world of transcription.  My only question is that I also noticed the price diff in these online courses.  That is primarily the reason why I am choosing to go with Career Step.  MTec seems like a good school, but they are 3x as much.  Will I get just as good an education?

Career Step
It's true, you get what you pay for. Andrews is #1, M-Tec is #2, and Career Step is a distant 3rd.
