You can also download (free) a product called Cool Timer from CNet.

You can set it to act like a stopwatch or to countdown time. I use it all the time and it has helped me immensely. I just have it open all the time on my toolbar. http://www.download.com/Cool-Timer/3000-2350_4-10062255.html

There is a free download line counter called Abacus and I have used
that program to count my lines, which works real well.  I just always used a program to do it.  It's pretty user friendly and you can try it for free and see if you like it.
Download Express Scribe, it's free, when you download the voice files you will listen to....
them in Express Scribe and you can set your footpedal up. I forget where the downloaded files go, can't remember if you can put them where you want them but I would have to search for them to download to Express Scribe - maybe someone else can tell you how. It is much better than what you are doing.
I would try a product called Out
It is available in both the pet care and baby care sections of Wal-Mart. I use it for pet accidents (puppy not trained yet) by pouring it directly on the spot after soaking up the spot first, allow to soak a few minutes and then blot it up -- works great that way, but I also now add it in when using my Hoover steamcleaner, and gives a fresh scent to the whole room.
There is a product called Green Light
or you might try a systemic insect killer that you just put on top the soil and water it. Just do not use it for any plant that bears fruits or vegetables. They both work well.
A product called *Oops* might do the trick
It can be found at places like Sherwin Williams Paint. It seemed to get up all kinds of stuff when we built our house. Good luck!
Abacus is not free. It is $20 but worth it. You can download a trial version free which does not h
I have used this for years and have compared to Sylvan, Word, and MP Count, etc. When you have it set to count every character, bold, shift, tab, etc. It is great and always higher than the others. Now if you are wanting gross lines like in Word then no it won't be as high because Word counts blanks lines and Abacus counts a line only if there is a character on it. There is also two places to check for it to count the Headers/Footers. If you have the FREE version then it must be the trial or a very old version so you don't have all the features and functions.
At one time, someone posted a link for a free clock timer. sm
I've searched the archives but could not find it. It was for timing your actual time spent transcribing. Anybody remember what it was. TIA.
I use a little handheld digital timer from Pyrex (our oven timer doesn't work) - sm
and it's great, has two digital windows, clock on top, counter (which is what I use) on the bottem, then you can switch "modes" to a screen with 2 timers if that is what you want. Cost about $10. So I time myself more now since it helps me buckle down and I see who I am fastest at this way.....average anywhere from 12-18 minutes of dictation an hour doing this--- unfortunately I spend too much time looking up addresses but I hope my address directory will be to the point one day where I don't have to look up anymore (or at least not much). Have fun.
Download a program called Switch and convert the file. nmx

anything else out there.
Download the free AVG from Grisoft.com.
It finds viruses that Norton misses.
You can also download free from Microsoft
www.microsoft.com
You can download ExpressScribe for free.
Do a Google search for the URL.   You can use your keyboard to control the dictation to do testing.
I you don't have a zip application, download a free one like 7-Zip. sm
then follow the instructions and compress (zip) the ShortHand file.
Free meditech download..sm

There was a site about 8 months or so ago that we would go to and we were able to download the Meditech program for free.  Once you have the meditech, you need your own clients numbers to access the modem, but the program itself was not a security issue.  I was just wondering if anyone knew of another site with the download.

How do I download free MP Count?

You can download abacus free. You just have
to delete this line that says: Buy me so you can get rid of this annoying line (or something like that). It counts your lines for you and then creates an invoice. Looks professional. Hope this helps.
download Malwarebytes....it's free and......

I had something like that too awhile ago.  Because of this "thing," I had a hard time staying on any website, let alone trying to download Malwarebytes.  But I kept trying and finally, the next day, I was able to get it downloaded and ran.  It took the problem away and saved me a huge headache.  This "thing" was something like Spyware 2008, I just can't remember exactly.  I just know it said something about spyware and everytime I tried to go to a site, it would pop up and I couldn't do anything at all.  Somehow, though, I managed to bring up Malwarebytes and inbetween closing the spyware thing and its popping up again, I got Malwarebytes loaded.  I also have McAffe, AdAware and Spybot but they didn't stop this thing.

One thing you need to do, if you don't already, is update your antispyware and adware protection.  Do it at least once a week because new bugs are coming out constantly.  I even run an update on McAffee even though I think it's supposed to do it automatically, just to be safe.

Right now I have some stupid "MywayWebSearch" or something like that and I cannot get rid of no matter what I do.  Besides the 3 listed above, I even ran SuperAntispyware and Spyware Blaster and still can't get rid of it! I think I have managed to quarantine it though, cuz it doesn't seem to be causing the havoc anymore.  These are all Free, by the way, and they do keep my computer pretty clean for the most part.  I run scans every couple of days, and do the other maintenance stuff.

Good luck to you and give these things a try before you spend money.  If they don't work, nothing lost, if they do.... money saved!

Download ShortHand for a free trial.

Of all the expanders I've tried, it's been the easiest to learn and use.  Good graphic user interface, too.  Lots of features.  Read the help file and manual because there are a lot of neat features I didn't even know about until I read about them.

You can download the free 30-day trial of Shorthand here.

http://www.pcshorthand.com/dnload.html

Then it's $99.95 to purchase it at the end of the free trial, but it pays for itself and is really easy to use.  That'll give you a month to save up the money for it.  My stats vary on it anywhere from 26% to 67% depending on my dictator.

Download Express Scribe for free.

You can download a trial version free.

You can download Express Scribe for free, but I would
suggest waiting on the foot pedal.  If you need to do voice files for testing you can using hot keys - slower, but saves you from buying something that will stay in the closet.   You may need a C-phone but I never heard of a company providing one.  Sometimes the company will provide a foot pedal too.
Use Abacus. You can download for free. Very accurate. nm

Shorthand - You can download a free 30-day trial

Express Scribe is free, download it at

Download express scribe for free
Not sure if it does the files you need but a quick check of their program will tell you. Google it.
You can download Express Scribe for free.
This program has programmed hot keys (the F keys) to do the same things a foot pedal would. A foot pedal does make the going easier. You could try ebay or do a Google search to find a foot pedal that is within your price range.
Anyone know where I can get the old MPCount software that was a free download?
I know that it is now part of MPTools or something like that and you have to pay for it, but I just want the old version.
Download eTrust EZ Antivirus. Free, and it got rid of my spyware.

There's a free utility you can download to add multiple AutoText ... sm
entries at one time, but you have to format the list manually in a Word document before you can run the macro to upload. The utility only works in versions 2000 to 2003. You would create a 2-column table with your entry name in column 1 and your text in column 2, then run the macro. You can take a pre-made list and convert that to a table, but it's still going to take some manual editing on your part to format the list. It's a lot of work either way. You can find the utility here:

autotextloader2.zip Utility for loading a large number of AutoText entries into a template. http://jay-freedman.info/

ABCZ lists you can purchase are made to work with ShortHand and Instant Text only. Google Jon Knowles or ABCZ lists.

I use ShortCut. You can download a free demo version at sylvansoft.com. nm

Download FTP SERVER software (it can be found free). Then have the docs
upload their files to YOUR server. There is no cost to you or the doc to do this. Someone does have to pay for the recorder, which I have chosen to do for 2 docs. The other one purchases his own when needed (twice in 7 years). One picks up files on FTP server. The other 2 still want theirs printed. Since they are not in same city, I mail them via snail mail and they are happy with that. I also do fax any stat reports to them at no charge simply because I have unlimited long distance.
It's an e-zine that you download for free and read. It's still quarterly. Just in case anyon

There is a free program called Belarc you
can download.  It will tell you processor speed, RAM, hard drive, sound card - every little thing about your computer.  I used it with Win98 and WinXP.  Google Belarc for website.
Can use a free program called Audacity.
I have only heard about this and have not found the need to do it myself yet, but heard it works great.

Here is a website someone passed to me:

http://www.andybrain.com/archive/convert-cassette-to-cd-digital.htm

If you Google "tapes to digital," there are a lot of sites that give directions.

Good luck.

You and your unspeakable qualifications are the reasons you're a technical pro with more knowledge than the folks that write the articles and why're you're hanging out on an MT bulletin board! Yes!

Firefox absolutely is relevant. Your choice of browser does increase or decrease the likelihood of your acquiring a virus. I've never heard anyone say that because they use Firefox they're protected from all viruses. But you're the pro with more knowledge than anyone else, including those in the industry who write the articles, so let the rest of us tread lightly around you and your ego.
The so-called "reality show" is the lowest form of so-called entertainment in recent years
I hate them. They've ruined TV.
Get you a timer and sm....
and see if you are actually working that entire time or if you are like me and very distracted and really only work 5 of the 8 hours. I am terrible about checking emails, looking out the window, surfing the internet, etc., etc. and once I really look at how long I worked I really only got in about a third the time I thought I was actually working. This may not be you at all, but this would help you to see if this is part of the problem. You might also get you a notepad that you have on your desk and write down everytime you answer the phone, answer a question from spouse or kids, got up to do something, etc. and see what type of distractions are taking away from your working time. I am talking from experience here. If I was not so distracted I would probably do at least 2000 lines a day but I am lucky to get 1300. Just a thought and good luck.

A real old old timer
When I learned how to type in high school, we had the manual typewriters with no letters on the keys.  The first electric typewriter when I was a senior, was awesome! You barely had to touch it.  I can't remember either the name of the first "word processor" I used, but I know that soon after came the "Mag Card".  I definitely don't miss any of these.  Yes, that was before production.    Boy, just thinking about this makes me realize how "ancient" I am and how far technology has come in my lifetime.
TIMER FOR TRANSCRIPTION?

Here is a question for you gals (and guys).  Where can I find a timer like the chess players use that you can hit the button and it stops, hit it again and it continues.  I would very much like to be able to track just how much time I actually spend on transcribing versus jumping up and down doing housework, answering the phone, door, etc.

Thanks!

I used to use a timer, but not anymore.
It would jump the living daylights out of me every time as I was "in the transcribing zone." :)
