Stedman Surgery Book

Will post on equipment board, too.  How would I obtain an overnight delivery of a surgical word book?  I have done some orthopaedic clinic notes for about 6 months and PT for about 5-1/2 years, but am interviewing for an in-house position for an orthopaedic surgery group today, yep, today.  Everyone tells me there will not be much I haven't heard already, but I'm not sure about that.

TIA

4th ed stedman's ortho book
is listed on ebay for 9.99, if anyone is interested.  I have 100% positive feedback rating, so you can bid with confidence.  "judymari"
Stedman's Equipment book, but there is new

equipment coming out all the time.  I use the websites for the manufactures, Johnson & Johnson, U.S. Surgical, etc.  I Google things like Ethicon and Mitek.   Equipment is hard too because a lot of the times the whole word may be capitalized, or you think it should be 2 words and it is one word, with various parts capitalized.

When you have to look something up write it in a notebook if you don't have a reference book.  When you have down time go to the various manufacturers websites and read about their products.

A LIST? You need a whole book. Try Stedman's. nm

Thanks. I have Stedman's Med Equip book-nm

I was only going to get the book, but no more online updates. sm
You need to get the CD in order to get updates. Ellen Drake said on www.mtchat.com that the CD is much better than last year's.
Stedman's Word Book

I just started my first MT job about a month ago and I could not do without my Stedman's Orthopaedic & Rehab Words book. If in the future I get into something else I would definitely buy another one of these!

Also have Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book, a Stedman's Medical Dictionary and The AAMT Book of Style - all very useful.

Stedman's Radiology Book
has samples in the back of it too. Good luck. I love radiology and wish I could do it PRN at home.
I had the Stedman's Surg and Equip book
as well, and sold it after a month on E-Bay! There is just no comparison. I believe Stedman's surgical books are divided in 2 parts - naturally the one I had was never any use. The Surgical Word Book is HUGE, and it literally has everything and anything in it, alphabetically or categorically. When I first started MTing 20+ years ago, its all I used as well, and it was tiny then compared to now! It is so much more than surgical words - I mean it, it has nearly everything I ever need to look up. If I don't find it there, I go to Stedman's, and last resort google. Its so worth the investment!
Stedman's abbreviations, equipment book, a

drug book like Quick Look or Drake.   I have almost all the Stedman's books.  If you are doing multiple specialities I'd get as many references as you can afford.    Stedman's frequently has discounts and/or free shipping and that is when I add to my library.   I don't always get the newest versions, particularly if I don't use the original reference that much.  I don't get a drug book every year, but about every other year.

There are lots of on-line sources, but not all are reliable and if you are like me sometimes you get on-line to look up a word and 30 minutes later you're still on-line.

I have a Stedman's Ortho & Rehab book too

I type strictly ortho reports and that book has helped tremendously!! They have other books for other specialties too. They are worth every penny!

If you only bought 1 stedman's word book, what would it be?

Just got a new job (!) and want to take advantage of discount books from my old job (!).  Don't know what specialties I'll be working on, general acute care AFAIK.  The only book I've ever owned is Dorland's dictionary.  I'm leaning towards Medical and Surgical Equipment.... but would be really happy if anyone has any ideas for me, thanks!

And I may just Go Wild and buy two.

get South Beach Diet book or see online..sm

Stedman's has a plastic surgery reference book. If

you are just going to be doing plastic surgery you might could get by with that and a drug book.  I use an electronic version of Quick Look and I like that, not sure how different the book might be, but either Quick Look or Drake & Drake are good drug books.

The drug books are updated every year, though I only get a new one about every other year.  I believe the plastic surgery book has been updated within the past year, so should be a good resource.  You can check the classified board here and e-bay and you might be able to find books cheaper, just be sure you are getting the most current edition.  You can go to Stedman's website to verify current edition if needed.

Stedman's M&S Equipment Word Book is my bible. nm

Get a Stedman's Ortho & Rehab word book, . . .
and you can check.  Put them into your word Expander correctly (capped or not), and you won't have to try to remember which tests are and aren't capped.  :)
so is a good grammar book found at any bookstore or online--sm
for HALF the price and their guidelines do not change every six months in them. You know, you people hate AAMT because of them selling the american MT out and condoning outsourcing to China, but then you turn around and buy into their money grabbing scam of their BOS book, which changes its mind every six months just to make you buy another book. How blind!!
Gotta get the Stedman's Ortho & Rehab Words. Wheeless encylopedia is a good site to book

Stedman's phrase book vs. Medical Phrase Index? sm
I'm debating between the newest edition of the MPI versus the Stedman's phrase book. Have had experience with the MPI, but not the Stedman's one. Is Stedman's worth it?
Bare Minerals IS available at ULTA online,Sephora online...(sm)

...and you don't have to sign up for a makeup "club," or anything. I totally agree with you that this makeup is great for all the basic purposes (coverage, lasting), but their slogan is "Makeup so healthy you can sleep in it." There is a delay in time between when you can apply your powder after moisturizer, but it is really worth it.

To go with your powder I recommend the "pump brush" offered at some of the cosmetic online stores. You fill the handle with your powder mixture (I mix two different powders, changing it up or down according to how much sun I've been getting) and the pump brush will distribute some to the bristles, tap and have at it! This is great for carrying it with you to minimize the loss into the lining of your handbag!

I cannot recommend Bare Minerals enough. I used to be a MAC convert, and have tried everything from Chanel to Maybelline--this product does not disappoint.

Stedman's Med Dictionary and Stedman's Med Spell checker are two different programs. Which on

do you have?  If it is the medical dictionary, as far as I know it is only a reference software and can't be used as a spell checker.

If you have the spell checker, go into Word.  Click on Tools, Options, and then Spelling & Grammar tab.  Then click on the Custom Dictionaries button about half way down the window.  This will open a new window that lists your available dictionaries and one should be checked.  Mine is checked next CUSTOM.DIC (DEFAULT).  There is an ADD button to the right.  If you click it, you will be able to browse for your custom dictionary.

Hope that helps.

I have only used Stedman's. What are some differences in Dorland's and Stedman's?

Does anyone use both.  I'm definitely getting the CD/ROM and am debating about buying both.  I don't see any reason to have both but there could be something I don't know.

I noticed CD/ROMs are on backorder but they're selling downloadable versions.  I can handle that.

Pathology
Looking for pathology transcription, any suggestions on companies?
pathology
As I have done pathology in the past, I do not believe they will ever outsource pathology. The turn around time is too close and the way that pathology is dictated is very hard to dupliate. The gross part is dictated in the morning and then the ending evaluation is dictated that evening, with all of this having to be on the same report. Then, if any special stains are done, this has to be appended to the corresponding report as well.
Pathology

I have done pathology for years; was trained with a state coroner's office and then worked in 2 large hospital pathology offices.  Yes, it can be very repetitive and boring.

I'll just give you a basic overview for general pathology:

First, you will have the "gross description".  It will be dictated as soon as specimens are received.  It is literally a physical description of the specimen, including color, size, shape, texture, marks, etc.

Sometimes a "frozen section diagnosis" is issued while a patient is in surgery and the surgeon needs to know immediately if carcinoma is present.

Once slides are made and the pathologist reviews them, then the "microscopic description" will be dictated.  You go back to the same report and below the gross description you type the microscopic.  It will be very detailed with heavy pathology terminology and a diagnosis or diagnoses.  Sometimes it will state that further studies are being done and only give a tentative diagnosis, etc.  You may handle that one report many times before it is completed and ready to be signed off.

There are many different other types of reports you may do including bone marrow aspirations, peripheral blood smears, cytology (pathological review of urine, sputum, and blood - liquids), hormone receptor testing, and even autopsies.

You should invest in a pathology word book and be very familiar with pathology style, which is extremely important.  Become familiar with the names and style to appropriately type bacteria, viruses, various pathogens, stains, laboratory values.

Overall, I love it.  It is fast-paced and time-sensitive.  If ever I can help you, write me and I will do all I can.

Pathology
I used to do that about 6 years ago. The pay isn't as good, try branching out? Or call Spheris they used to hound me for pathology transcription, although I wouldn't go back to it now.

How come nobody hardly ever talks about pathology on these boards?
If you like pathology.
This way you can leave work at work.  If that doesn't work out, you could always come home to QA'ing....   Good luck!

Can you tell me where I can find pathology typing at home. I have 16 years experience in Pathology
Pathology MT

Hi, I am currently a pathology Transcriptionist at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.  I have been on this job a little over 2 years on a Lanier machine and it has done me well.  It is very repetitious and I have a ton of macros, which affords me to fly through the dictations.  Some of the dictators have accents, but I've come to recognize what they are saying to make the necessary adjustments.  I do like pathology transcription, never done it before this job, however, like I said it is repetitious and monotonous; so if you get bored easily, this is not the job for you.  : )   I also make a good living doing it on site.  I don't know how much you'd make doing it at home.  They are trying to move us home now, so we'll see.

I wish you luck.

Pathology

Love pathology, worked in pathology departments (1 year for VA and 1 year for  children's hospital). Pathology is cool.

Want Pathology also

Am looking for a home-based Pathology MT position.  Tried Medical Examiner's offices also, but they were not looking.  Have over 30 years experinence.

Pathology
Is my nightmare.
Pathology
I LOVE Pathology!! (Guess it's because I have been transcrbing it for 20 years). I have transcribed other specialties but I will admit - Pathology is definitely my favorite...
Does anyone do Pathology?
if so, what system do you use - if you work for a big transcription company (as opposed to directly for a pathologist)  do they pay the same for pathology as for other work.  I've recently been asked to come back to work for a pathologist I worked for (for 10 years).  They then switched to a big outsourcing company and have not been happy ever since.  Their "new system" seems to require 20% of the time transcribing and 80% of the time on busy work - looking up names, demographics, etc.  Does anyone have an opinion about this?  Thank you.
