EvCC

I graduated from EvCC; they've been using CS's program for a while now.  I LOVED going through EvCC; the instructors were great and we were equipped with syllabi, vocab sheets, "cheat sheets," and test prep.  I've "heard" it's rare going through a CC for MT and being taught by CMTs, but every one of my instructors was a CMT and my Q2 instructor was Kim Buchanan (sp?).

I'm really glad I chose EvCC instead of CS by itself; I just know it would have taken me longer to graduate and get a job if I had.

I'm glad I chose to go there instead of Career Step.  I liked having instructors, deadlines, syllabi, etc...I'm a procrastinator and need to be "pushed" .

If you have trouble finding a job, you can contact Career Step and go through their job placement thing.  You can also choose to take Career Step's final exam after taking EvCC's final.

They use the materials but they expand on them, and everything available to Career Step's students is available to those enrolled at EvCC.

I received a Pell Grant and didn't have to pay out of my pocket because I had no job and, basically, no money at the time.

Hi!  I recently graduated from EVCC.  I took the course on a part-time basis.  I thoroughly enjoyed the program and loved my teachers.  I received a job right after graduating.  There are many excellent programs out there, but 1 plus for EVCC is that you can apply for Financial Aid.

I went to EVCC too and was hired soon after graduation.  As with any home-based training, you will need to be disciplined to be successful though  I did get frustrated by not having easy access to a teacher as in a classroom environment, and I found myself waiting for techers' email responses for too long sometimes.  Ended up just teaching myself a lot, but it can be done.  Good luck to you!

Hello, I just wanted to say that my experience with the Career Step program partnered with Everett Community College (100% online and available to anyone anywhere in US) has been similar to the MTEC experience described (a real human teacher looking at and evaluating, giving feedback, etc.) It would be about $4000 out of pocket, but due to a large layoff at my company, my tuition was paid. Since Career Step is one of the most well-regarded schools by employers (or so I heard) and I am also getting the personal attention from the aspects of the program added by EvCC, I would say it is the best of both worlds.

Plus, being a community college makes the program eligible for VA/military educational benefits (this includes kids and spouses), worker retraining, displaced homemaker or homemaker reentering workforce, single moms who need vocational training, disabled and need a sedentary job, rural area without good economy trying to increase employment rate through telecommuting initiatives, FAFSA, etc. Many many options to help reduce or eliminate tuition cost.

I've been lurking here for about 2 years and have read all the bad things about Career Step (CS).  I would love to go to Andrews or M-Tec, but simply can't afford it.  I've decided to go with CS through Everett Community College because of the grants that I will get. 

If any of you would be so kind to answer a few of my questions and concerns I would greatly appreciate it!

I was enrolled in my local community college and I got through ENG COMP 101 and the medical terminology classes (with perfect scores) and then they dropped the MT program.  They said it was because by the time their students graduated there will be no work for them due to EMR.

My biggest concern is physicians entering their own data.  I live in an area that has 2 big hospitals and 1 of them uses no voice at all.  No dictation at all!  Just took my son there yesterday and mentioned my MT classes to the physician, who was entering data during the visit, and he said MT work is completely dead in the water at clinics (this was an urgent care facility that he was speaking of).  How does everyone feel about this?  I want to do MT work so badly, but it's right in my face that it soon won't be needed.  Opinions please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do the nationals still have so much work if MT is being phased out?  Are healthcare facilities required to start the phase out of MT's?

Okay, about the CS choice with Everett, can anyone tell me if I would be greatly lacking  in training?  The great advantage I see is that I'll have real instructors by going through Everett.  If anyone knows what I would be lacking please advise me!!  I know Andrews and M-Tec are wonderful but I just can not afford it.  However, I can afford extra books and maybe a used SUM program off of ebay if needed.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this.  I know the CS thing has been talked to death.  Am I wrong to think Everett will make all better?  Am I wrong to think MT work will not be there when I graduate anyway?

I really enjoyed EvCC.  They expand on Career Step's program SO much and are really helpful.  I still talk to a lot of my classmates via a Yahoo! Group and consider them friends.  We always welcome new EvCC students if you're interested .
