Gross line means anything on a line is a line, even if just one word
it is counted as a line.  Not sure what exactly you are asking, but if you are comparing gross line to the usual 65 characters plus spaces gross line is better.  If you make 7.5 cpl per gross line that equals approximately 9.5 cpl based on 65 characters.
A free line counting and invoice generator is MTStars FlashCount.

Check out www.openoffice.org - it's the same as MS Word, but Free! NM

Line/word counts
There is free software out there on the Internet called MP count.  You could download that and scan a document that you have typed to get an idea of words/lines. There are different settings you can use with this program to calculate lines with spaces, extended, and so on.  Perhaps this could be of some help.  Good luck!
Word's line count is not ideal to use. sm
Word does not always count certain things, like headers, footers, tables, etc., from what I've heard, and I've never found it to be very accurate on the whole. For one document, it might be higher than my line counting software, whereas for another document, it might yield a lower count.

If you use specific software to count lines, you will get a higher count with actual (or gross) lines. Do a Google search for Sylvan's Sylcount software (and there are probably other free downloads, like maybe PractiCount and Abacus). You can download a free trial and then you can set it up to run actual lines versus 65-char line. Sylcount has 2 different options for counting gross lines, one being just a standard count-all-lines command and another being a line equals at least 1 character, and each may give different counts.

I still have a couple accounts that pay actual lines and it has always worked out to be significantly higher. In fact, it proves very challenging for me to find work at 65-char because it's not worth my while in comparison. Love the actual lines!!
Do you use Google as a reference? When
I put in Olympus fiberoptic colonoscope (yes, I've known what it is for 20+ years now), I get lots of hits.

Just trying to help.

I did a search on Google for
entertainment transcription and several companies came up.  Most of them are based in California and require that you live withing 30 minutes driving distance from the location of the transcription company.  See www.transcripts.net, also see www.indeed.com, there are similar jobs posted on this site.
Google it. I would suggest staying away

from TVPS.com

I have used this company and had no problems.  http://www.theprogrammers.com/wavp.html

I tried to google Missy's list
and got nowhere. Maybe the site is down now. I found out about it from Meditec (clicked on references/resources then job links). I just tried that now and it took me to a page of just advertisements. So, I guess it is down now. What they did was charge a fee for access to their list of MT companies and private forum. They'd usually say a little bit about the MT companies such as how much experience they required before testing, if they allowed newbies, etc. All of that info you could get elsewhere on you own, but it was kind of helpful having a lot of it in front of you when job hunging. Basically that was it.

It sounds like the site you are talking about is a good idea. Maybe it would be something we all can use. If you move forward with it, let us know.

God Bless.
Hey Milton, your stapler is causing google
to spawn a bunch of stapler advertising!  You are so powerful my friend...
Google 'practice medical transcription'
Your question got me wondering, so I checked out the site that the previous poster provided. Those programs were way to expensive for me, but I did find some others that were a little cheaper.
Are you getting your line count from your program or can you use the line counting software to do
s
Please make sure to ask word questions on the Word Help board. There are
people who specifically answer questions there.
A large part of MT work is research. Do some research on this company. Check Google, etc. nm

If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.
for free
Don't worry, before long, you ALL will be doing it for free! I mean come on, they already pay MTs like they are tomato pickers or putting soles on shoes! If you work for nothing, then 2 cents or 3 cents a line is going to sound good to you and believe me, it will come to that. WHAT CAN'T YOU AND OTHERS RESPECT YOURSELVES AS HUMAN BEINGS WITH BRAINS AND WORK A NORMAL AMOUNT OF HOURS FOR A REGULAR PAYCHECK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD!? There are so many transcribers I have heard carry on about how much money they make -- ask them, how long they actually are working and what they are paid and you will see the true picture.
free books
Am definitely interested in your free books, just get them weighed at the post office and let me know what media mail rate will be, also be sure to include the cost of whatever packaging you need to use.

Thanks for the generous offer.

AutoHotkey is free (sm)

You can use it to create macros to shorten common tasks or use it as an expander.
Work for free
I would be willing to work for free or intern for a company that would give me practical experience, especially if they would consider me for a paid position once I have gotten my feet wet. I would much rather spend 8 months doing real work than just going through a formal program if possible.

Thanks for your response!
Check this out, it's free!
The page numbers don't match, but you should be able to find what you're looking for.

want to learn MT course for free?
you can use this blog site if you want to learn medical transcription for free

http://learn-free-medical-transcription.blogspot.com/

thank you
So it changed from $99 for software that is free - sm
To $79 for a foot pedal? I bought my foot pedal on my own and so can anyone else. Why do they need to give the money directly to you?
You are working for free?! That would be the the problem I would think. SM

Why would a company advance you to paid status if they are able to get you to do the work for free.  You should get paid for your time and knowledge.  I am new also, only on my second week working, and on full QA.  I am getting paid, as you should be also!  My advise would be, quit now, put this 'internship' as professional experience on your resume, and begin looking for a new PAYING job!

Where you are at now they very well may never intend to advance you to paid status.  I'm willing to bet the company IS getting paid for these reports that you are doing the work on.

Remember to check into any company that is offering you a job.  Unfortunately there are crooked companies and people out there.  Best of luck to you!

Shorthand will give you a free 30
day trial to try it out. After 30 days, if you choose to buy it, it'll cost about $100.00. It's pretty good.

Good luck.
Free books...you pay shipping.

I am willing to do transcription for free...please read why!

I will be graduating shortly. I understand how hard it is to get a job in this field without experience. I know that 2 years is preferred but I also figure that some is better than none. I have been doing free transcription work for free in return for a letter stating I did work for you. I will only be doing this for a short time so take advantage of this offer! This would be a great opportunity for any ICs that have an abundance of work right now but do not want to hire anybody, or if you just want to lower your workload for a short amount of time. Let me help you...so it can help me! This is a serious offer! Serious inquiries only!

BTW, if you are going to comment just to be rude or insulting, please don't comment at all. We all have to start somewhere.

Nevermind found what I needed for free!

Many company websites will let anybody try their test for free.
Why not try a few company website tests and see how you feel after that.

And I think the comment about mastering things was a result of another poster's mispelling of English terms such as there/their and your/you're. Some MTs tend to think the way a poster spells on an MT board says something about their mastery of the English language.
MTStars FlashType has a free demo and if you like it, it is
EXTREMELY reasonably priced as compared to others on the market. It works like pretty much like PC Shorthand, but is more cost effective.  See the link below.
There are several free typing sites online.
goodtyping.com is one of them I know. It uses a series of typing tests to improve on quality and speed. It helped me.
We can discuss this via email if you would like but the software was never free. nm

The best thing for you to do is post your resume on the various free

job boards.  There are companies that will hire from the resumes and don't post openings.  Unless you went to one of the better schools you probably don't stand much of a chance of getting an at home position.  Even if you did go to one of the better schools it may be difficult to find an at home position.   There are companies that will hire newbies and pay them almost nothing, there are companies that offer mentoring programs that may or may not pay you anything and some may even cost you.  There are companies that may offer you a position and then say you have to buy equipment/software from them first.  These are probably not legitimate companies and you need to stay away from them.

Most companies want 2 years of experience, though there are exceptions.  Your best bet would be to look through your local classifieds and see if you can find a position in a physician's office or a hospital.

Try MTStars FlashType. It has a 7 day free trial.

Know of a free trial Med. Spell Check?

I'm looking for a temporary med. spell checker. I hope to purchase Stedman's soon, but right now I need a decent spell check for employment testing!

Thanks!

There is a free version of Express Delegate

I don't use it, but there is lots of information on their website. Perhaps you can contact the company for any answers not found on there.
Also, try MTStars FlashCount. It's free and has great features.

For testing I needed software that I could download free

but I could not get the footpedal to work.  Anybody have experience with this?  I downloaded Express Scribe to listen to the dictation.

Thanks in advance.

Accustat Carolinas pays some 2 after they work for free for six months...just crazy.nm

A USB foot pedal would be good to have. You can download Express Scribe for free to take tests. nm

Microsoft Word/Microsoft Word 2003 are the same
MS Word 2007 is an upgrade.  Are you sure that you don't have it installed on your PC?  I don't know if that helps...good luck, and please don't pull your hair out, it comes out with age (lol)
I'm sure you'd be first in line for it, right?

The VLC has had numerous complaints against them and people demanding refunds.  I was in a position to KNOW that people that couldn't get jobs because they couldn't pass MT employment tests after the VLC course.  How is that being immature?  Evidently, you're one of the VLC reps lurking on the boards so you can jump in and refer your school.  Otherwise, you wouldn't be taking it so personally.

$ per line?
As a recent graduate and new MT, could someone tell me what a fair salary is, per line of transcription? Thanks so much.
How much per line?
I also do voice recognition as well as straight transcription. I have been an MT for about 2 years now and started off doing voice recognition and I love it. I now do about 1800 to 2100 lines per day (voice recognition). I started off with a company doing vr and was only making 2.5 to 3 cents per line and I stayed with them for about 18 months and after the raises I was making 4.25 cents per line. However, that was an IC position and I wanted benefits so I started taking as many online tests as possible with companies that offer employee status and not IC. I wanted to get benefits. So, eventually I passed the tests for about 6 different companies and I got to pick which one I wanted to go with instead of begging for someone to hire me.

I would take some tests online on the days that you are not working perhaps on the weekends or evenings and see if you pass the tests. It can't hurt at all. I am now working with a new company and I am currently making 6 cents per line and this is for voice recognition, which is pretty darn good doing about 1800 lines per day. You will not know until you try. E-mail me if you have any other questions.
Maybe not out of line...
but not a very good *cooperative* attitude.
line count

Can someone please help me with the whole line count, WPM, total dollars concept. I'm trying to figure out my potential income doing MT. I know there are a range of answers but there must be some averages. I would be brand new at MT. What's your best guess of amount of work in say a 6 hour/day schedule? After 6 months experience? Thanks in advance for your help!

best on-line courses?

Hi all,

I'd like to take an on-line MT course; can anyone recommend one over any others? I plan on doing an internship for experience when I'm done for a while so I can get an actual paid position. How hard will it be to start working from home as I have a 20 month old that I want to stay at home with.

Thanks!
