warranted.  In my experience, the KVO rate was used during a transesophageal echocardiogram wherein if the patient needed a bolus of a med, then the line was there to give it.  Saline was given at a KVO rate, but I think it also (slow drip) allowed hydration for the patient while undergoing the procedure.  I believe these drips given at KVO rate can be started a lot of times in the ER to allow venous access.

In broad generalizations, brand names are catchy and easy to say, generics often are not..sm
Subject: In broad generalizations, brand names are catchy and easy to say, generics often are not..sm

Brand names..Avapro, Motrin, Aleve, Bentyl, Rescon, Comtrex, Toradol...easy to pronounce, spelling makes sense, sound like a shiny corporate marketing group named them (which they did).

Generics...celecoxib, lazabemide, dexormaplatin, praziquantel... look and sound like a bunch of syllables randomly thrown together.

With experience you'll recognize the common suffixes of generics...-mide,-cillin, -olone, -xime.

But, really, it's just lots and lots of repetition of seeing, looking up, hearing, and typing them hundreds of times.
Any way you can work it into your spellcheck and/or macro program is the best help you can give yourself.
Brand names are usually shorter

I can't remember...sm
Subject: I can't remember...sm

I can't remember how long it took me to be able to type at a 1:2 ratio since I have been doing this for about 15 years. However, I do know that it took me longer than 3 to 4 months, especially since I was looking everything up in reference books to double check my spelling as I didn't go to school for medical transcription. Maybe someone else has a better idea. I DO remember being frustrated that it was taking me so long to finish a tape (back when I did tapes, LOL!).

when new at it. You new MTs are at a disadvantage for not having someone physically standing over your shoulders mentoring you. We did back in the old days, even if we had to grab a doc for help. Help was always there.

Help is now HERE! Any newbie requesting my help is going to get the best advice I can give. If MT Stars doesn't like this help I'm offering, I'm sure they will let me know, and maybe I can start a blog or something somewhere else.

"Trauma hospital?" Where'd that come from, anyway? Sigh.
