Anybody know how to distinguish which retractor (Homan vs Hohmann) in ortho operative procedures? Both are listed in the Stedman's. Goggle is confusing me. This specific report is ORIF of medial malleolus fracture.

what specialty are you transcribing? Hohmann retractor is used in orthopedics.

Subject: imho... Hohmann for orthopedics sm

Homan=most commonly a "sign" (calf pain with foot dorsiflexion. Hohmann=orthopedic retractor. Also Holman=lung retractor. I think Google is confusing because Homan is used incorrectly when Hohmann is correct spelling for ortho procedures; I don't think you'll find "Homan retractor" in any surgical instruments catalog, but there are LOTS of catalogs selling Hohmann retractors. My Stedman's only lists Hohmann (but I have an old 2nd ed.)...jmho

Was this for delivery of a baby?
Subject: Was this for delivery of a baby?

I found several references on googling to torticollis and hemorrhage, either SCM or intracranial, etc., from traumatic/difficult deliveries. I also found a reference to a type of shaken-baby syndrome where they had been playing and tossing the baby in the air. Too late, I'm sure, but just thought I'd throw this in for the heck of it. It's another exciting night here...so studying the word board :-)

Subject: Or the baby might have been laterally positioned. (sm)

That's how I was. My twin sister was positioned correctly, so they delivered her first, then turned me externally. Mom was asleep for the delivery (back in 1963), and I guess she woke up with pain and bruising from it. She says it was a big deal; they had her sign so all the students could watch. No privacy for my delivery!

This paragraph shows AZT for baby -see message
Subject: This paragraph shows AZT for baby -see message

If an HIV positive woman is taking AZT then it will probably be recommended that her baby is given AZT (usually as a syrup) for the first six weeks of its life starting 8-12 hours after birth. Alternatively, if the mother has taken AZT and 3TC during labour then an effective regime for the baby would be one week of AZT and 3TC.

If only limited AZT is available then one week of AZT can be given to the baby. If only single dose AZT is available then the baby can have this combined with a single dose of NVP, and if no AZT is available then the baby can have a single dose of NVP to help protect it.

Subject: Obstetrics help needed--baby delivered by what s/l OCD

...but I'm pretty sure it can't be obsessive compulsive disorder--unless it's someone who *really* is into scheduling  c-sections or is quite tidy.   Anyway, the irony of transcribing OB/GYN for me is that although I personally have all the parts, I absolutely have no clue what's going on half the time.  There are always so many acronyms.  I'd appreciate any help someone could throw my way.  Thanks!
