in to ways, as an adjective and as a noun. If it is used as a noun, it means head, head teacher. If it is used as an adjective, it means main, most important, basic, key, foremost, fundamental, major, primary. Also, principle is not and will never be used as an adjective.

Principal (in addition to the head of a school) is an adjective meaning chief or main. Principle is never an adjective. Don't take my word for it. Check a dictionary.

Principal Diagnosis

It's true the principal is your "pal," that is to help you remember how to spell his title.  But he is the princiPAL because he is the main or most important person on the school faculty, the principal staff member.  Just like the PrinciPAL Diagnosis is the main, most important diagnosis.  The little principal is your "pal" memory jogger is not meant to say that there are not other uses for principal.

There are a couple of correct responses in this thread and one has the definitions, so I won't repeat them.

This is a good reason to use a post-it note until you get it into your subconscious. I have plenty of post-its on my computer as well.

We are, after all,  "word detectives."

Keep on asking, you can see we all need a little refresher now and then.
