Can't seem to resolve this...funny thing is, while I was searching I ran across articles about someone named "Kitner" or "Kittner" where they spelled the same person's name both ways in the same article! 


In this situation, I think you've done what you can.  If you don't have a specific reference that seems for any reason most authoritative, it looks like one of those eenie-meenie-minie-mo situations.
