I learned a long time ago how to differentiate between the two. principal is the head of a school and he is your princi*pal*. he is your pal. the other principle is what would be used in a report. hope this helps.

That's a shame, because it is definitely not principal, it's principle.  In grade school, I was taught to remember the difference like this:  The school principal is your PAL.  Too bad about your national getting it wrong.  Hopefully it's just one person at your national...and probably one you dare not argue with, eh?

Principal (in addition to the head of a school) is an adjective meaning chief or main. Principle is never an adjective. Don't take my word for it. Check a dictionary.
