In Reply to: Nope, not a catch. The only thing you need to do to qualify I think is have been there one year in - TTMT

To all of those who think that we sell ourselves short at 8.5 cents base rate, this is yet another reason we aren't.

Consider, the only people at an MTSC who generate income ARE THE MTs! WE do the work that pays for ALL salaries and benefits. IT and managers and QA people generate ZERO income for the company. Keep this in mind as I go on.

Now, since you pay the benefits in full, whether that is out of your wage or the company pays for it, or both, YOU are still paying for 100% of it through YOUR work. IT IS NOT FREE.

Given that insurance rates went up and the company will now cover a higher percentage of the MT's premium at TT, that is worth money, and it is MY money.

I made 10 cents at my last IC job. Last year I typed on the order of 350,000 lines or so, but not all of it at that rate, I worked a couple of places. No health insurance and I can't afford to buy any privately, I have tried. There were no incentives anywhere I worked, no bonuses, no differential for shift work, no PTO, nothing. Did I mention I paid 22% of my income in taxes?

Employment, a real job job like TT has...they have to pay part of your FICA for you. TT pays a high percentage of the health insurance premium. There are so many incentives I can't keep it straight and I have benefited from more than one of them and I have been there a month. But you need to see numbers:

22,000 lines a month at 8.5 cents: $1870 (company minimum)
Company portion of health insurance: $200 (just an example, NOT a fact)
Shift differential for 1/5 of lines: $12
Internet reimbursement: $40
PTO at 7 hours per month (based on 11 days per year): $81
Total: $2203 compensation
Less insurance premium of $200 (just an example)
Total net before taxes: $2003

2203 divided by 10 cents: 22030 lines (actually more)
BUT
private health insurance to equal what is offered $625 (an insurance quote I was given for $2500 deductible no less)
Dental and vision: $60 (a discount plan, not insurance)
Internet: $40
UPTO (based on 10 days a year, 1100 lines a day at 10 cents: $110 month (you'd have to save your money for this)

take that $2203 minus $935= $1268
This is what you have left to live on with an insurance benefit that is not as good as the company offers and either saving up for time off or not having any break all year.

It isn't your line rate, it is HOW MUCH OF THE MONEY YOU MAKE THAT YOU GET TO KEEP. After all, we are MTs and we, as a group, generated 100% of the company's income.

Of course, you can go without insurance and if you get sick or need surgery you will have even less to live on because you'll have pay those bills. Group rates are always better. You get no holiday pay unless you work them. Your tax rates are higher and you work just as hard FOR LESS.

Now, you can use similar figures to come up with the real story behind benefits, line rates and income for your situation. This is one time that less is actually a lot more.

Call me a used car salesman if you want to, but this is well reasoned and on target. I might only get 8.5 cents A LINE, but my compensation is ohhh so much more. If you can't see where this all makes sense, you are an ignorant fool and move over YOU are selling YOURSELF short!

Why can't they hire a salesperson? sm

Seems to me that it's pretty cheap of them to ask MTs to go foraging for accounts for them.  If they had an ounce of professionalism, they'd hire a professional salesperson, pay them a good salary, and have them produce contracts.

Tell them to hire a salesperson & leave u alone. nm
